While we've eaten here a few times over the past several years, I have mixed feelings about this place, probably stemming from the fact that I've had the opportunity to dine at a lot of really nice Mexican restaurants when I lived in NY years ago. Plus I do a lot of my own Mexican cooking at home. I'm definitely spoiled. That said, this place is fine for your basic run-of-the-mill Mexican stuff. Not bad, not outstanding, just okay. Several caveats: 1) Take seriously any entrée that mentions "onions" in the description. An order of "Enchiladas Suizas" (typically chicken enchiladas in a green tomatillo-based sauce topped with sour cream) arrived covered in so many chopped raw onions that it was rendered nearly inedible. And I do like raw onions. 2) The rice, while nicely spotted with some diced red bell pepper & green peas, seriously has the look, taste, & texture of instant rice. I absolutely hate it when restaurants use instant rice. 3) The refried beans are served in a "puddle", yet I really like my refried beans this way. However, if you don't, be forewarned. 4) Many entrees do not automatically come with the usual rice/beans sides. Make sure you either study the large menu carefully or ask when ordering in case this is important to you. All sides are, of course, availabe ala carte. Pros are the warm homemade tortilla chips & carafe of homemade salsa redolent with fresh cilantro (which is obviously a con if you hate that herb) set on the table when you're seated. They also have several different bottles of hot sauce on the table (a "Mexican", a "Jalapeno", & a "Habenero"). Also, the enchiladas are made from nice corn tortillas instead of the usual flour ones other Mex places normally use. And they're not cheap with the meat either. Margeritas are "okay", & prices overall are reasonable for what you get. Service can be spotty. While we've had limited problems in the past, our last visit this past Friday had our entrees sitting in front of us minus any napkins or silverware. It took a solid 10 minutes before our waiter returned with our place settings. And we ended up having to go up front to pay our check after there was no sign of our waiter for a good 20 minutes of his presenting the bill. No excuse since the place wasn't busy at all. Decor is your basic pseudo-stucco with rounded arches & hand-painted murals on the walls. Dress is very casual. All in all, if you've a craving for Mexican food at decent prices you could definitely do worse. We first visited nearly two years ago and overall was not impressed. After El Agave was voted Best Mexican Restaurant in Warrenton again, we decided to revisit. Meh. Let that be a lesson to me about those "Voted Best in..." articles. They may not be accurate. El Agave is just OK at best. Mediocre may be more appropriate. Ambiance? No, you won't find any of that here. The inside of El Agave is seriously overdue for an update. Although it appears that some painting may be underway, it still has a grungy, worn out feel to it. Don't look at the ceiling tiles! The waitstaff was not particularly observant, it took forever to get drink refills and our check. The food was OK. Just OK. My wife had the Chile Colorado O Verde with the green sauce and said it was OK If it had been served to me I think I'd have sent it back - it was far too salty for my taste. We have come here for about 10 years. Only good fresh authentic Mexican In the whole county. I'm a huge fan of the shrimp fajitas. And my kids love the tacos. One of our local favorites to take the family. read more

Tonight was no different than any other time Ihave eaten here. For the first time I had the Shrimp Chimichanga ( fried) and they ( you get two) were outstanding. To my surprise they were stuffed not with popcorn shrimp which I would have gladly accepted, but with 20 ct prawns that were seasoned and done to perfection. Ok, I'm a fan and a homer. I've lived in the area for 12 years, and once I discovered this nice little restaurant, I latched on. Good, old type mexican food. I love the Nachos Texanos, and I cheat by adding the cheese dip to it.... and it's so good it might just hurt you! Good balance of peppers, onions, cheese, steak, chicken, and shrimp... for a pittance. The Margaritas are worth grabbing the jumbo size, and two will soften you up nice. They have Tequila too, and will slip an extra shot in if you're nice; they have good brands too... Herradura, Patron, etc... and they'll give you Anjeo if you ask for it. Visit this place, in Warrenton, Marshall, or Middleburg (off the main drag). The service is very nice... the wait staff has years of experience and will take good care of you. I don't know how this wonderful restaurant only has three stars. This is my favorite restaurant. The service is great. The people who work here are so nice. The food is delicious (my favorite is the shrimp fajitas). The salsa has the perfect amount of spice. The atmosphere in there is perfect. I stopped at El Agave for a lunch meet, and were pretty disappointed. The "salsa" was more like spicy tomato water. The flavor was sub par. I ordered the chimichanga and was disappointed with how dry it was. The only saving grace was the coffee. It was actually quite delicious. read more

My wife and I had driven by El Gave many times and decided to give them a try on a Friday night about 7:30. There was about a 15 minutes wait as they were busy. Once we were seated the waiter was very prompt in delivering the chips and salsa and to get our drink order. We shared the Nacho Supremo and the portion was large enough for us to share. It too was brought out quickly. The Nacho Supremo was very good and the wait staff was attentive with refills and to check on use. The prices were very reasonable and everything looked clean and neat. We would recommend giving them a try. read more

I've tried this place a few times, as there always seems to be a line out the door. After living here for a year, I realize it's because there's no real competition. The food is mediocre at best. The service is TERRIBLE, and sometimes downright hostile. You will leave reeking of onions. I have nothing against onions for a little flavor, but they really go overboard. If you're craving Mexican/Latin American food, I'd recommend cooking it yourself or heading down to Taqueria Jasmine in Bealeton. It's friendlier, tastier, and more authentic. read more

One guy took my order, another brought the food, then I was completely ignored by both as well as a third person who seemed to care about other tables but not me. We had a dinner party of 21 at this restaurant on feb 21. The service being slow was understandably slow due to it being such a large group. But the food was horrible. My meat was 'all' fat. I think i got 2-3 bites that were not. My salad was iceberg lettuce and a small glob if guacamole slopped on top. The only thing i enjoyed was the coffee. My girlfriend sent her food back. El Agave has great margaritas - the best I've had at a restaurant. As far as food, I've only eaten here a few times & I've only ever gotten their taco salad. I get it without refried beans b/c I don't care for them. The taco salad is usually very good. You get chips & salsa free when you're seated & the salsa is very good - you can tell it's fresh. They don't suck. Fact, they are pretty good. The service is prompt, staff is courteous, and it's pretty clean for a high volume, strip mall restaurant. The burritos, enchiladas, tacos, relenos are all acceptable, chips and salsa is fresh and plentiful. Tastes are predictable, but that's not bad sometimes. The place doesn't WOW. It's just affordable comfort food. You never heard of texmex as comfort food did you? Anything with this much fat and sodium is comfort food. So comfort up and eat there. Where to start. The salsa is very obviously made in house, and is so good I frequently buy some to go so I can eat it for the rest of the week. The queso is unparalleled. My personal favorite here are the carnitas. I challenge you to find a more tender-on-the-inside, crisp-on-the-outside slow cooked pork anywhere around. The burrito California, chile verde, and enchiladas suizas are also excellent. Watch out if Bruno is your waiter. Don't let his smile fool you, he is a straight up trickster. I understand it's difficult for restaurants during COVID. We try to make it easier, giving plenty of time for them to prepare takeout, and even scheduling a time and ordering hours ahead. Tonight was the second time El Agave missed the time they told us. We had arranged for pick up at 6:30. I arrived at 6:40, and waited for 5 minutes to be helped. So this place would be a no for me or perhaps I'm too accustomed to the Mexican restaurants in Northern VA. I ordered the chicken fajita quesadilla and they didn't season my chicken or veggies. I'm a fajita girl, but I've had their taquitos and flautas as well as the hubby having their carne asada and mole rancheros. El Agave used to be my favorite restaurant in Warrenton. I would go there almost weekly. However I have recently been disappointed with the overall experience. The restaurant seems overall dirty and unappetizing. The service is hit or miss. Unlike in the past - the food is served in significantly smaller portions and is also significantly worse in quality. The rice and beans have no flavor and I have been served crunchy rice (like it was over cooked or had been sitting out a long time). In my recent experience, the food is not good, the plate is sloppily prepared, small portions, and blah atmosphere. I will continue to give El Agave a try here and there and I hope that they will be able to fix whatever has changed. read more

No better word to describe this than "mild". All the bad things seemed to be evened out by the good things and vice versa. The chips came out right away, but they were a bit cold. Food was tasty and more than filling; we had plenty of leftovers for the next day's lunch. I am writing this review to give kudos to our waiter, Alfredo, who went out of his way to make us feel welcome and attended to. He made sure our drinks were always filled to the top, he was always smiling and kept good eye contact, he shared the WiFi password with us without a problem, and provided us with extra sauces and dressings at our request. Nothing special...as others have said. I went with a group of 4 and 2 kids. With a 6 beers between all of us and a meal for each the dinner was around $100...they include a 14% tip in the bill. For years, El Agave was the closest thing to authentic Mexican food in Fauquier County. This is one of those places that I like because it is familiar, not because it's phenomenal. Service is mediocre and sometimes the food is cooked unto death. The warm atmosphere and the complimentary chips and salsa are the best part. If you want good Mexican food, go to El Toro down the road. If you want a homey atmosphere with slightly cheaper food, go to El Agave. 2 stars seems too low and 3 stars seems a little generous. read more

After living here over four years we finally tried El Agave. What. A. Dump. First the chips were actually decent. But my lunch order of fajitas was just onion soup with like 1 ounce of chicken served with cold beans and rice. The tortillas were warm but when everything else is cold who cares? My lunch was disgusting. The service was bad too. Although only a few people were in the restaurant it was as if we were inconveniencing them by being there. I definitely will never go back. I ordered the carne asada tacos and everything was plain. It needed more seasoning and the meat was very tough. The people in my other party had the steak and they said that it too was very difficult to chew. I had a handicapped person in my party and the bathroom was not handicap-able.
