Kind of a bad place and not the best environment either. I stayed here for a few weeks last summer and here are my takeaways: Pros: Location is not bad at all, I was on a higher floor so the traffic was not super audible and I could sleep through it just fine (I am from a city and am used to noise, though, my roommate had some trouble at first). USUALLY pretty clean and put together, the AC was working, nothing was gross or anything when I moved in. Decent amount of storage, I was in a smaller double, but it was still pretty spacious, and I'm pretty sure all of the dorms have private bathrooms which was great. Cons: When I first moved in, I noticed the hallways were super musty and sad, the rooms were also really dull. Not just like weird, but full on creepy with lights flickering for a bit on the dark, nasty, yellow, peeling walls in the hallways. Rooms were not nasty, though. I did not have this issue, but about half of the people I knew there did. There was a HUGE cockroach problem on my floor and they were so icky! I was in my friend's bathroom and while I was sitting on the toilet, a cockroach literally crawled out of the drain and flew directly at me. I didn't even know they flew! Apparently this was not the first time my friend had seen roaches come out of her drain. When people reported this, the normal response was that they would get right on it. They never got on it. Also we were told that security was tight and would only allow dorm residents into the halls, but nope! Many instances, random people were going up the wrong elevator and ending up in the dorms instead. I was sitting outside the elevator when the door opened and the guy was like "where am I?". And I'm not surprised he was so shocked because this place is gross compared to the new yorker hotel side. I was also in the hallways talking to my friend once and two confused drunk guys were wandering the halls, which I would be confused, too, because the hallways are literally a maze. Like the most confusing set up in the world. When people visited, they were required to have a badge, and I maybe saw one person wearing a badge the whole time I was there and people brought outsiders up always, which goes to show how amazing their security is. Our shower also broke and would not stop. When we called down, they said they would send someone up and it took so long. When they got up, they didn't know what to do and basically broke the shower to stop it and said they would be back in the morning to fix it with an actual team. They did not come back in the morning and we had to call them. We were without a shower for two full days and some. Overall, I would not recommend staying here. It's nasty and infested and not safe. Also, there are a lot of children living here over the summer, which is not an issue with me, but the whole security thing really rubs me the wrong way because of the minors that are living there. read more

There's cockroaches in many of the rooms, low natural light, and it's very old. Sometimes the pipes run with rusty brown water. Also there's no window screens so you'll get eaten alive by bugs if you open your windows a crack (I'd post photos but frankly it's kind of gross). Kind staff but there's not much they can do. The location is central but super busy, loud, and dirty (you can hear street noise at all hours). Quite sketchy too. Penn station area simply isn't comfortable for living in--just ask any local. These problems aren't isolated and many residents I know have experienced them. If you value your quality of life and your company has corporate housing here, take the stipend instead and top it off with some of your own money. Going through all of this isn't worth it, I'm speaking from experience. Addressing the response: The issues that I experienced were acknowledged by staff but none were ever resolved. The poor state of the building is a large factor in the quality of the residence, and unfortunately tarnished my stay. read more

This was my first semester living in New York and living at the New Yorker was so nice and helped ease my way into this fast paced life. The staff and RAs were so nice and helpful and made me feel good about living there. The kitchen was really nice and big. The lounge area was a good place to hang out with friends or study. They also have a quiet study room. The gym is small but has all the basics. I've never lived alone so having the extra hotel security plus all the cameras made me feel safer. I'm not sure about the bad reviews but I had an amazing semester in the dorms and am coming back next year. The dorms are in an amazing location: a block from Penn station (2-3 stops from John Jay on the A or C), a block from Madison Square Garden, Times Square is a 10 minute walk, plethora of restaurants and convenience/department stores, CityMD. This is an area that so many people would be lucky to live in and I'm happy I did. My view was pretty great too. VERY overpriced but what can you do. Update: I found a relatively cheap place to buy groceries and other dorm needs. Wish I found this sooner! It's called Jack's on 32nd between 6th and 7th. This review is for the EHS New Yorker residence. I've never been to NYC before and decided to spend two months there with my best friend while the two of us were interning. Naturally, finding a place to stay was the utmost concern for the two of us since we'd never been in a city this large and had no experience with transit systems. EHS recommended the New Yorker residence for us since it was central to a lot of things we'd need in our trip, and we were not disappointed. It's sandwiched in between Times Square and Penn Station. We were within walking distance from all the hustle and bustle but still far enough away that it didn't feel like we were involved in chaos 24/7. The communal spaces were nice and spacious and I was able to utilize the study rooms often. The security detail was also nice and I felt safe my entire trip. Our room was a little bigger than the average dorm room, with our own private bathroom. The appliances and communal spaces all had a modern feel, while our room sort of resembled the older layout of the original building. All in all, it was a good place to spend the summer and I would recommend staying at this location if given the chance! The only thing I didn't like was the guest policy, but they outline it fairly clearly at the beginning of your stay. Adhere to the guidelines and you'll be fine, it was just a little inconvenient. read more

Pros: Single rooms are offered. Good security. Staff is nice and responsive. Always someone on call for emergency or if you lock yourself out of your room. I emailed about multiple dryers being out of order and they immediately responded, contacted maintenance and put notices on the 4 machines. Some good programming- salad and pizza night, and cheap baseball game tickets etc. Cons: Loud. Hotel and outside are always crowded. Not a lot of good or unique restaurants around. Mostly chains like Chipolte, 5 Guys, MacDonalds, couple blocks for Dig Inn. Always a wait for everything. People and cars crowd the streets 24/7. You learn to go to bed to the sound of constant horns and sirens. Far away from other dorms and universities in the city such as NYU and the New School. I thought I was going crazy when I kept coming home from work to find my toothbrush etc been moved from where I had left them in the morning. After seeing that a space where wires were once hanging out from the wall was now covered, I figured that maintenance was in my room doing the repair. I was never notified that they would be coming, nor was I notified that they came into my room, even after the fix was made. -The single room I have has hardwood floors but the AC leaks. The room has a musty/stuffy, dingy smell to it even though I have been here for 2 months. When I arrived there was a thick layer of dust on everything from the windowsills to the bathtub and still gets visibly dirty and dusty just after a few days of not cleaning. -Bathroom is not exactly like the pics and needs renovation. Since there are no drinking fountains in the building, you have to drink from the tap which wouldn't be an problem normally but the tap water is never cold; it always comes out warm or even hot, especially at the end of the day and at night. The shower hasn't been renovated in so long that it's a tub/shower combo and the hot/cold knobs for the shower and tub are all 4 different knobs. The temperature does not stay consistent during a shower so it shifts as you shower and is hard to get to a good temperature. The water pressure is also bad, takes double the time it should. -Kitchen is located on the 15th floor along with the gym that is small and also always crowded. I didn't think the kitchen being on the 15th floor would be a big deal but it is definitely more of a hassle than I had anticipated. You have to work around other students so again its literally always crowded when you need it and EHS does not provide any basic cookware such as pots/pans (extra expense after spending too much to live here already.) Super annoying to have to lug your cookware and ingredients to another floor when you just want to make a meal. So not worth the time or money when you could have a place with a kitchen in your unit. -Laundry in the basement so you have to go into hot hallways and elevators to avoid hotel guests and the crowded lobby. Alternatively, you can walk through the lobby and use the regular elevators risking weird looks with all your laundry etc. The washers and dryers are out of date. Dryers in particular are dirty, broken, and some even smell. Always multiple that are out of service leaving a wait (even on weekdays.) -Guests are a hassle. No guests past 10pm even if they're not staying over. If you want them to stay over, it's $5 and you have to get them approved by the student life office by 10pm because that's when the office closes (6pm on Sundays) having a guest over after 3 nights in a row the fee is $20/night. Not worth the $6,750/summer. I know my friends are paying less for a better location with more amenities and better living experience in NYC. read more

I lived in the EHS Marymount residence this past summer and had such a great experience! It was really great not having to worry about furnishing my space for such a short amount of time, as well as having security 24 hours a day. Other great aspects of my building included a gym and laundry room, kitchens in each suite, as well as ample storage and closet space. I was also able to share a room with a friend from school, and shared a suite with two girls who we got along with really well. Another great aspect of living with EHS is the amount of programming they have throughout the summer. They had a few events each week, from exploring different areas of the city to more relaxed gatherings. This is great especially for people who are not familiar with New York City, which can often be overwhelming. For college students, EHS is the best short-term housing option! read more

I would give less than 1 if I could! My daughter dormed here and it was absolutely a nightmare! The orientation was nothing but lies! They told us the hotel guests weren't allowed to use the same elevators LIE! There were hotel guests (drunk) roaming the halls of the dorms! The water in shower was brown 1 week and the halls had a horrible smell most occasions. Most of the time the hotel employees were very rude to her as well. Now as for the rooms..small is an understatement. The location is just unsafe to have a college dorm in. They really need to think about the students safety because having my daughter walk outside and see ppl lying on street shooting up drugs isn't a good "college experience"! I have lived here for 3 weeks and I am already sick of it. EHS is horrible. Their website is extremely misleading, their policies are crap, and they don't give a damn about the people who live here. I feel like EHS might have been sarcastic when talking about their rooms here, so I'll in turn give a sarcastic review!! I payed $150 to move in three days early and MY ROOM WAS TOTALLY READY. The furniture, which is very old and outdated, was COVERED in dust and scattered all over the room. It was so awesome to see the care they took to making sure my $150 didn't go to waste. There were still items left behind from the summer people who stayed there. When I asked the RAs about it, they said they would help take care of it but they never did. They're so considerate. And I had to hassle up their chain of command for almost two weeks just to get the $150 I paid for nothing back. The room itself is fantastic!! The bathrooms are the best ever! They are moldy, impractical and incomplete. What I mean by incomplete is there are no bars on the walls to hang towels and there's not even a drain for the bathtub. I know some people who don't even have faucets in the their sinks. It's so excellent. The closet is great too. A three foot bar is plenty of space for two girls who both work jobs to hang up all their clothes...And the floors of the rooms aren't carpet or wood, meaning the floors are always a pleasant ice-cold temperature. And the "refrigerator/freezer" that EHS boasts about on their website is a sure thing! A two-foot tall minifridge with a tiny freezer compartment. WONDERFUL. The kitchen is wonderful!! Some kitchens only have ONE stove top, which is shared by 40+ people. And there are NO OVENS. NONE. There's a stove and a toaster and that's about all EHS is willing to give you when it comes to preparing meals. They are so considerate... And the business center??? 25 cents to print a piece of paper! Great for the STUDENTS that live here so we can print HOMEWORK and TESTS without having to worry about finances.... And the absolute best part about living here?? The construction that starts at 7 am EVERY DAY on the 15th floor. Even on weekends. EHS decided that instead of taking the time when their summer residents were moving out to start construction, they would wait for all of their fall residents to move in so that all the students could be woken up by the hammering and power saws and what not. It's like EHS cares more about improving a floor that no one lives on rather than fixing all of their other defective floors!! DO NOT STAY HERE. It isn't worth it. You can find better AND CHEAPER apartments around Midtown that don't have the grief associated with living here. EHS sucks. EDIT: About 8 months after I moved out of EHS, I find out they got SUED because their living conditions were so horrible they actually violated NYC laws. Disclaimer: I am NOT writing this because I'm angry and need to vent. I'm writing it because people deserve the truth on this place. I wish someone had warned me. The website is very deceiving. DO NOT MOVE HERE. Yes it is in midtown, but trust me living a bit further out is worth it. We have had COCKROACHES and although they came to spray, the roaches were back the 2nd day. Also, the rooms are TINY: I am in a double and we have 1 closet that is 6 inches deep. The bathrooms are really outdated and there isn't a fan and they're moldy. Also, we recently went three days without hot water - they took three days to return hot water to floors of people! This is NYC, this should not happen here. How am I supposed to get dressed for work like this? I couldn't even clean up after the cockroaches because I didn't have hot water to scrub with! Gross. Also, the furniture is outdated and does not look anything like the pictures. The mattresses are old and I had to buy a 3" foam memory pad in order to not feel the lumps. Our fridge doesn't stay very cold (milk goes bad after about three days) and the freezer was so frozen over we had to melt it in order to be able to chip away at the ice and actually make it functional. Finally, the room has 1 tiny window tucked in a corner, and the 1 overhead light is so dim we had to buy a bunch of lamps as well. Lastly -- I recently woke up to no electricity on half of my room. Apparently it had been out all night because there was water leaking from my refrigerator. After asking them to fix it, it took an hour for them to find the loose fuze. OH & finally... they have a RIDICULOUS OVER NIGHT POLICY. EACH TIME you have an overnight guest, even though you are paying between $8-$9k to live here, the guest has to pay an additional $5, must be checked in before the office closes (either at 6pm, 8pm, or 10pm, depending on the day -- so i hope you have a good memory!) And if you forget to sign your guest in, or meet up with a friend who lives in NJ and who wants to crash in midtown for the night, TOO BAD! Also, even if you are 21, there is a NO ALCOHOL policy which means that you can't even pre game a night out or relax with a glass of wine after a hard day at work/school. Sooo I'd keep looking. The RA's are nice, but the facilities are lacking. I'm sure an apt would've been much nicer. Or perhaps another EHS location. read more

I have lived at EHS New Yorker for 3 years now. My first room was absolutely disgusting. It was a very small single. The walls were the ugliest shade of green that made you feel depressed. The bathroom looked like it was barely cleaned before I moved in and it had some cracks on the tile, toilet, and sink. My second room was a large single (I upgraded, therefore the price increased). I was allowed an emotional support animal (extra fee) which was nice and the reason for me getting a large single because the regular single would have been too small. The bathroom was very nice and updated, unlike the other rooms and floors. Also, I had a great view but very dirty windows so I couldn't enjoy the view. Pros: The reason I stayed here this long was because it was a less than 10 minute walk from my school (FIT) and it had good security. More cons: - Kitchen: It is a communal kitchen, therefore you are sharing with all the EHS residents. There are stove tops, microwaves and a convention oven, but no regular oven. Usually one stove top doesn't work. I never cooked here because of the inconvenience, therefore I spent an extra $800 a month just on getting Grubhub orders. -Laundry room: If you have any clothing you like, DO NOT use the machines!!! I had a sweater for less than a year and it ruined it even when I put it in a delicate bag. They are the industrial washers and dryers, so they try to fix them if they don't work. Also, the dryers rarely dry your clothes and there are usually two dryers not working and three washers not working as well. I started a pile for clothes I liked to bring home (I went home once a month). -Overnight guests: You have to pay $5 per night if you have an overnight guest (anything after 4 days is an increase in price). Also, all day guests must leave by 10pm or you have to pay the overnight guest fee. read more

Since I've just checked out, I wanted to give my thoughts on the New Yorker Residence and EHS. The staff by far are the friendliest and most helpful people. From the minute you check in to the minute you leave, they are there for you. As a freshman, I was really nervous about living away from home and my friends, but between all the events here and the people, I felt comfortable and fit right in. The room was pretty cool and it was interesting living in a hotel. The only complaint I would have is some of the hotel functions. The front door always seemed broke and the escalators to downstairs have been off for a few months. All in all- a great experience! Already booked for next year! read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. The EHS New Yorker does not care about their residents. The advertised photos are a lie, they only show the renovated 15th floor and choose not to include the other floors that the majority of the students live on. The floors are outdated, smelly, and dirty. I pay over 17,000 to live here for 9 months. I have mold on my bathroom ceiling. The small washing and drying machines do not work the majority of the time, which is located all the way in the basement. My clothes are never dried and I am forced to pay 4-6 dollars to make sure they are. The EHS residents are not allowed to bring guests into the dorms although the hotel residents are. EHS residents are also not allowed to use any of the bathrooms outside of our room. The kitchen has 5 stoves and 0 ovens for all their students. There is only one water fountain for every EHS resident which is located on the 15th floor. The elevators have trouble running the majority of the time. All in all, do not give your money to EHS. Live in an apartment anywhere else, it would be so much cheaper. read more

Due to the pandemic EHS kicked everyone out of the New Yorker, my daughter paid for a semesters housing and wasn't there for 9 weeks but she will not be getting any money back. EHS has decided to give a credit to returning students to get them back but are giving nothing to students like my daughter who are not returning. If you are getting screwed too reach out to me as we are considering a class action suit. read more

I normally NEVER leave reviews, but this has to be the worst place to live EVER. I love ehs as a company, but this building in general is terrible. I got transferred over to the New Yorker EHS residence from a different EHS building due to covid. I currently staying here for one full academic year, and almost about to move out. The building is filthy, it has roaches, the hallways smelly dingy and almost like cigarettes. The staff here are very rude. The people here expect you to pay 20,000!!! (yes that much) and all the facilities are CLOSED due to covid. I understand that we are in the middle of a global pandemic, but I shouldn't be paying the standard price if I am not able to get the full experience. I can't even have guests over!! The vending machines literally don't work MOST of the time. My room is super small for the price, the bathroom is dirty, the drain doesn't work , there is black mold. Literally one time the hot water was shut off for an ENTIRE WEEK, i couldn't shower, I had to stay with a friend. I also called and complained about the hot water being shut off, and then one of the RA's sent somebody in my room while I was not even there without my permission. There's always water problems, they're constantly turning the water on and off. The RA's are literally useless, and often times they are all grouped up in the office not even wearing masks, they're also rude. I can go on and on about this building. NOT TO FORGET!!! this building is located in the absolute worst place in New York City, it is extremely close to Penn Station, there was a stabbing across the street from the building. A group of drug dealers and crackheads literally collectively hang out at the McDonalds across the street, there's almost ALWAYS human feces on the ground outside. You cannot leave the building without being harassed by either a crackhead or homeless person. I am begging you, do NOT spend your money on this building. It honestly shouldn't even have student housing in a HOTEL!!! you have to deal with insanely rude EHS workers and also the very rude hotel staff. It's ridiculous. read more

Pros - location: it's in a nice area. Metro and food places are right there - security: it's safe - gym membership: like its nice that it's included but gym memberships are frankly kinda cheap and this place is so over expensive is it really worth it? Cons - over expensive. Don't kid yourself, the room sizes are basically the same and your paying so much for a shoebox, dont - elevators: break constantly. Before moving here I had only been stuck in 1 elevator for like 1 minute. Since moving here I've been stuck in an elevator 6 times for varying periods of time the longest was 14 minutes. - air conditioning: breaks constantly, loud clicking noises, and they'll cut it off at terrible times like early September when it's still 80 degrees outside or in July when it's 90 degrees outside. Bring your own. - fridge: the back of it leaks - the kitchen: I can't describe enough how terrible it is. Each sink is like playing roulette. Will it be only freezing only hot as a volcano or not work at all? There's like 10 you'd think 1 would work. Also the stove smoke filter things all barely work or don't work at all. And people are just loud disgusting and disrespectful. - the dining area: people will openly drink - vending machines: will eat your money - washers and dryers: break constantly, the washers will fill with a mysterious black liquid every once in a while - RAs: I met 1 of my 2 RAs once in August and then never saw her again. I never met the other one. I still don't know their names, contact infor, or what room is theirs. God forbid I have an emergency - maintenance staff: will talk down to you like you're a child, they also won't believe you when there is a problem - television: this is me specific but when my tv broke in November theyreplaced it with a computer monitor - wireless devices: if you have a printer you better have a cord, their WiFi doesn't allow printers or devices like Alexa or Google home - guests: possibly the most embarrassing thing I've done in my adult life is checking in a guest here, it's terrible - allergens: this place is a cesspool, multiple people had to move out and break their lease due to allergy issues. I had to buy a water filter for showers because I'd get rashes which has literally never happened before and happens nowhere else - light: it's dark as hell, I'd suggest buying your own lights but they may get replaced while you're away - lack of study rooms: they have like 2 but they're honestly terrible, hot as heck, and uncomfortable to sit in - mail room: you could get a package at 7am but you won't be able to pick it up until 9pm - walls and ceiling: super thin, you hear everything and I mean EVERYTHING - view: honestly you may expect something nice because haha it's Brooklynand by the water. Just uhm don't expect a great view like really, mines a building - ugly: the only pretty part of the building is the foyer everything else is ugly - kind of false advertising: on their website they'll talk about certain amneties, but if you read the fine print on their website on a certain page you'll see which ones are crossed off I moved here and to NYC for the first time not knowing anyone so I chose EHS student housing. Don't make my mistake. Find anywhere else. Their are cheaper and nice places in the same area. Do not live here. Also if you ever have a problem they do not care and will not help you. Trust me they DO NOT CARE. If you have a problem CC your schools housing director on the email, that's the only way they listen. I was emailing the student housing for 4 months about an issue when finally I emailed my housing director and guess what it was fixed 3 days later. Is that a coincidence? I don't think so. This place is terrible and they do not care about you. Move somewhere else. ANYWHERE ELSE. read more

Either all of the positive reviews are forged, or EHS uses some corporate scheme to force people to rate positively. If you choose not to read any further, please note that if I could give this literal hell hole less than 1 stars I would, and it is truly the worst place I have ever lain my head. For starters, the room is garbage. Being in Manhattan, there is a reasonable claim that this room should be small. But this room was not just small, it was nearly impossible to move in. The beds were arms length apart, there were like 2 outlets in the whole room, and there was a noise in the walls that sounded like everything was crumbling. The AC didn't work--which in sweltering NYC August heat is an issue--the blinds were practically useless, and the shower temperature was absolutely bipolar. Aside from the room itself, the living conditions were equivalent to that of a war zone. At night, from 10pm-4am, there would be a jackhammer and other construction. Every. Single. Night. The fact that I paid money to live here is atrocious. I called the help office--which is absolutely an oxymoron--and tried to tell them that it was impossible to sleep. Their suggestion was oh so helpful (sarcasm)! They offered me ear plugs. Yes, the cheap, 99 cent, rubber, COMPLETELY INEFFECTIVE, EAR PLUGS. The customer service was pathetic. After a long day of work (from 5am-8pm internship) feet hurting, sweat, the one thing I wanted was to lay on my subpar mattress and cry myself to sleep. BUT, when I tried to swipe my card, it did not work. This was not a monthly occurrence. It was not a weekly occurrence. IT WAS A DAILY OCCURENCE. And better yet, when I asked a serviceman to come and fix the issue, he sassed me, profusely blaming me. Finally, the visitor policy. I never thought that visiting some student housing sight near Penn Station would be harder to visit than Alcatraz, but I was sorely mistaken. Every time you show up, you have to sign in, leave some type of collateral (your license, your phone, your left kidney, etc.), and the resident has to let you in. One time, I was bed ridden, vomiting, and horribly sick, and when I called down to the security desk, they refused to let my friend in who brought me medicine and gatorade. The security desk is filled with a bunch of pathetic, testosterone filled misogynists who assume everything, even a friend bringing medication, is a threat. After 10pm, no one is allowed in, no ifs, ands, or buts. I recently asked a security officer why that was, and his response was, "well we don't want people having parties at 2am and disturbing other guests." Yes dude. I'm gonna invite my whole posse up to my 20 sq ft room at 2am when I have to be up at 5 to work a 12 hour work day. That's sound logic. The fact that I am paying money to live here is a tragedy. It's petty theft, and EHS is just taking advantage of students everywhere. I cannot force you to read this. I can only say that if you are the next unlucky soul who stays here, you will also publish your feelings about this apocalyptic nightmare. Talk about the best place to live in the city! The New Yorker location is literally close to EVERYTHING! Let's not forget to mention the polite staff, and efficient hotel security. I came out of state for an internship this summer and decided to stay at EHS. It has been THE BEST experience and I 100% recommend any college student who is moving to the city to stay here. I have met the most incredible people here and EHS has so many fun events. EHS has helped me fall in love with New York City and has brought me some of my best friends for life! I've lived at the New Yorker since August 2014, and still currently reside here for the next 2 months. I have a lot to say about the New Yorker Residence / EHS, but I'll try to be concise. - A very convenient location - You're right across the street from Penn Station. I'm from PA, so whenever I travel home I literally walk right across the street to get to the amtrak (Penn Station also home to LIRR, NJ transit & PATH trains) - You are within walking distance of so many trains: ACE, 123, BDFM, NQR...makes life easy - Right across the street from Madison Square Garden. I'm not sure if this would be a good thing to everyone. I think it makes things interesting. I usually find it fun that on many weeknights during the NHL and NBA seasons the streets are crowded with fans. To some this may be annoying. But MSG is a legendary arena and I appreciate living across the street from such history. Same goes for other famous places nearby: the Empire State Building (3 ave blocks away), Macy's (1 ave block away), and Herald Square (2 ave blocks away). - EHS is great for FRESHMAN and maybe students who are living in the city for the first time. EHS RA's host a lot of craft / game / movie nights, pizza parties, meet n greet events, etc...which are great for younger and first year students. But I am 21 years old and have been in college for almost 4 years now...these events don't really appeal to me. - Speaking of being 21, there's a no alcohol policy no matter how old you are (and there are people well over 25 or 30 living in this building). I understand why this policy is in place, young students will go buck wild and can't handle themselves. It's a liability issue. I still manage to get a few bottles of wine and some 6 packs up here (for myself, not for "dorm parties"). Still an annoying rule to live under. - You can't bring anyone in here past 10:00 pm unless you signed them in before 10:00 pm...because that's when the RA office closes. So if I go out to dinner with friends and wanna bring them over to my place afterwards but it's 10:15...whoops, I can't. - Oh and if your guest is here past 10:00 pm or over night, it costs $5. Because you don't already pay enough to stay here yourself. - While on the topic, you can only have one friend over. Yeah, one guest at a time policy. (not that your room is big enough for any more than one, anyway...) - Warn your over night guests of the cockroaches. (okay these are few and far between, but my roommate and I have found a few. It is New York after all) - HELL'S KITCHEN: literally. You will share a community kitchen with the 500 other students who live here. There are 5 cooktop stoves, 3 microwaves (2 of which are usually broken), 2 convection ovens that also double as microwaves, a toaster, and 4 sinks. It's not a horrible kitchen on paper. But don't dare walk in there at 7 pm ready to cook dinner. You'll have to get in line. It's packed, loud, annoying, gross...etc. People don't clean up after themselves. Luckily, there's EHS staff who cleans it on a daily basis. And lugging all your ingredients and cooking appliances down there is annoying. You will forget something in your room every time. You have to wash all your dishes and clean up before you eat your hot food (some people don't follow this rule and just leave all their dirty crap everywhere for people to work around). It was nice of EHS to build us this kitchen but it just makes cooking so completely inconvenient that you'll just end up getting take out half the time. Oh and it closes at midnight. - NEIGHBORHOOD: you live in a hotel. It can get annoying when you are just trying to settle in to a daily routine. The lobby is never not crowded with tourists, convention goers, or business men. Additionally, they're everywhere when you walk outside. 34th & 8th is one of the busiest intersections in the city for traffic and tourism. There's also many many homeless people, crack heads, and guys trying to sell you bus tours of the city. This is not the kind of neighborhood you want to live in. Sure, it's magical for the first week or two, but after that, it's annoying. In fact, it's practically an unlivable neighborhood. It's not a residential area. It's commercialized and touristy. There are no unique restaurants or shops- expect to eat McDonald's and Chipotle, and shop at Macy's and other chain stores. I've said before that living on 34th street is like living inside a shopping mall. If I want an authentic NYC experience, good food, or unique shopping, I have to travel outside my neighborhood. - EXPENSE: The cost of a double room equals out to $1720/mo. For the space / experience you get= NOT WORTH IT. So if you're 18 a freshman, I would recommend the New Yorker for atleast your first semester. If you already have experience living independently or are over 21, find yourself your own apartment where you can do as you please. A lot of info here, i know. A review for the EHS New Yorker Residence. This is a long review but hopefully informative. How long have I been living here: Just short of 1 Year. Will I still be living here: Yes, for one more semester while I finish grad school. My Review: I moved into the New Yorker Residence about a year ago when I started grad school. I am from California so it was a tad difficult to try and attempt to come to NY and look at apartments. EHS seemed like a good option, providing student housing in what I will say is probably the best and most convenient location in all of Manhattan (seriously, you are within walking distance of almost every subway, shuttle, LIRR, Amtrak, NJ Transit and Port Authority). This is great for students who are also working or interning. I am a full-time student but I also work 2 part-time jobs and I interned in Connecticut so having the accessibility to every major subway line was an absolute must. EHS New Yorker Residence is essentially a dorm. And like any dorm on any college campus, there are policies and whatnot. So while I was not thrilled to find that there is a guest policy ($5/night, must be signed in before 10pm M-F and I forget the times for Sat and Sun) and that there is a no alcohol policy (which makes sense regardless since most of the people that I have met are generally undergrads and underage), it is what it is: a dorm. And while in a dorm in NYC, you will meet a TON of people. People from around the world and all over the US. This was probably what I enjoyed most. I came to NY knowing no one but I know that when I leave EHS, I can call a lot of people friends and have a ton of places to visit (when I eventually get a job and have money, obvi. lol). And these are students and interns from different colleges so you get a variety of individuals, not just students all from the same university. They also have a lot of events every month to help you adjust to living in the city or just explore the city in general. BIG PLUS: 24-hr security. Hotel security will check for IDs and whatnot so you can rest assured that no crazy stranger is going to walk into the hotel. But the area is generally pretty safe too if that's what you're worried about. I've also walked by myself at all hours of the night and felt pretty safe (there's a precinct just around the corner if you're worried). The rooms are a tad small (but really, you're living inside a hotel in Manhattan) and the bathrooms are a bit outdated (my sink is probably from the 1950s). However, I enjoy the luxury of having the heat up to 90degrees in the freezing cold winter (this past winter was my first winter in my life. I'm from California where weather is generally pretty amazing all year round so I probably would've been miserable otherwise) and having the AC on full blast in the scorching humid and hot summer heat. Not to mention, they are really on top of their game when it comes to anything wrong with their wifi. It's been down maybe 2 times since I've been here but it was fixed almost immediately the next day (probably when it was possible to contact the internet providers). This was a huge plus for any college student, I'm sure. Afterall, we can't do anything without the internet these days. I've never had any pest issues so I can't speak on that (Yes, I've read the previous reviews. I can say that most, if not all, of the furniture in the rooms have been switched out to newer ones and the halls have been re-carpeted). HIGHLIGHT: If you're a runner like me, the Hudson River path is a great place to run. SUPER SAFE and runners/bikers at all hours of the day. I've ran in the early mornings, afternoons, evenings and even at 12am. I have never felt as though I was in any danger. You get an amazing view along the Hudson, especially at sunset! Oh, and you're literally within blocks of Times Square. AMAZINGGGGGG!!! As for other EHS stuff: the staff is actually pretty amazing too. I have no complaints at all. All the RA's are great, always helpful and friendly and sometimes I just sit in the student life office for a little chat. When I had an issue with my TV and mini-fridge, they responded to me almost immediately. The RDs are the same. When I had an issue, they responded to me immediately and helped me figure out a solution. This wasn't necessarily the same experience I had in my undergrad so that was refreshing. Also (be glad you weren't around for the year-long construction future EHSers) but the newly renovated 15th floor lounge and kitchen is pretty insane. Multiple large flatscreen TVs, couches, pool tables, quiet room, conference room and a REALLY REALLY LARGE KITCHEN. I am thoroughly impressed by the 15th floor. Sadly though, there are no ovens but eh, you can't have it all. All in all, I have really enjoyed my experience with EHS. I've called it home for about a year now and will continue to do so until I finish my grad school studies. read more

*******Don't be cheated by their websites. Do your own research before make any decision.********** I stayed in EHS New Yorker Residence from 8/2013 to 12/2013. Service: Most of RA are friendly but they are not well trained. My 4 packages were sent to another room because of my name and another resident's name is exactly the same. It takes me at least 3 days to push the staff to get my package back from another resident. They also have very restrict over-night guest policy which the guest must have been registered on the time slot which varies from day to day. Good point is New Yorker has laundry and gym in the building. Room: I lived in a single room. One room with bedroom equipped with twin bed, one desk and chair, one small screen TV with cable, one night stand that's all you have. Room is relatively big enough for one person. Price: HIGH! 2100 for one room without kitchen is relatively high in midtown area. If you plan to stay in New York for less than 6 month it will be a good choice. I suggest you find your own place if you plan to stay in NYC for more than 6 month. It is easily find a shared room around $1500-1800 near that area (I found a beautiful shared 2 bedroom in downtown area at a price of 1650 on 8/2014. I believe you can definitely do better than me.) Location: Near Penn Station. Yes, it is convenient. Near Macy, K-town and Penn Station. However, this area is the desert of Manhattan because it is near train station which means no market around, homeless, fast food and tourists everywhere. Believe it or not, my deli that time was DR downstairs. I got my food, snacks and drinks from DR everyday. 8th Ave is a main ave in manhattan which means there are tons of ambulances and police cars driving by day and night. I need to wear earplugs when I sleep even though I normally don't need them at all. Overall: I do not recommend stay in this place. read more

I am originally from New Jersey and have lived in Manhattan for the past four years. The New Yorker was actually my first 'place' in the city. I chose EHS simply because it was in a great location (walking distance from summer program) and for the length of the lease. Before I found EHS, it was almost impossible to find somewhere to live just for the summer. Also, my parents refused to lease an NYC walk-up and insisted on me living in a secure facility (I personally think they watched wayyy to much Law & Order:SVU!). So we started looking into doorman buildings and soon realized they were stupid expensive! The New Yorker definitely fit the safety requirement and the price was even better. I think a lot of people come in to Manhattan with overinflated expectations. Starting out here is going to be rough! That is, of course, if you don't have unlimited funds. Living here is not going to be Sex and the City fabulous... So I understand some of the negative reviews for this place - but I would still recommend it to all of my friends. It was easy to move into, the RAs were incredibly friendly and the living spaces were clean (and air-conditioned!). I also heard that they have recently made a lot really nice upgrades to their common areas too. A lot of my hometown friends ask me for 'city advice' and I always tell them: prepare for higher prices (on everything), expect small spaces (everywhere) and to get outside as much as you can. Don't ever become a hermit in Manhattan. Exploring the city is mandatory and absolutely amazing!! I was honestly terrified to move here at first, but EHS made the transition way less stressful. It was also a nice bonus to live with people my own age and to make new friends. That is definitely not something you could get from renting a random apartment. read more

I was a summer intern at an investment bank in New York City last summer, and I was stressed about finding a place to live for only 10 weeks. The New Yorker was absolutely perfect. It's located directly above a Subway station on the ACE lines, and is literally across the street from Penn Station, making the location pretty unbeatable. My room had its own private bathroom, which was as convenient as it gets, and it was the perfect place to come home to (and watch TV!!) after long and stressful days at work. The RAs are all very nice and helpful and were always able to answer my questions. The gym and common areas are very nice and clean, and were great places to sit and hang out. There were also many events hosted by EHS staff for the residents, such as a Broadway show and a free salad making event in the common area, which are great for getting to know people in the city. I had a lovely summer in the EHS New Yorker and I would definitely recommend it for anyone looking for student or intern housing in New York City! read more

The people who run these buildings are awful people. I live the in the marymount building and they keep lying, won't respond to emails, and act very rude. They have policies that they do not disclose as well and the building has mold in the bathroom. Kitchen is small. No couch or common room. You can find an apartment in the city much cheaper and better than here. read more

I would strongly advise people against staying in this residence or any of the other Educational Housing locations. Not only are the rates extremely expensive (my son paid close to $10,000 for spring semester for a tiny room that was shared with another person and had a terrible thin mattress), but the managers for Educational Housing were awful to communicate with when I had questions as a parent during Covid. It took me over 15 times to have someone respond to my calls and emails; people kept giving me different people to talk to, but no one was communicating. Plus, the staff did a terrible job of communicating with the people who lived there about what was happening once the pandemic hit. We were not offered a refund even though the company took that $10,000 for two months of staying there. There are better places to stay that are not trying to swindle students out of money with reckless prices and poor management. You can do better! read more

The location is great, BUT you can hear sirens all night. It takes a little while to adjust to the sounds of New York. The rooms are kind of small, and the furniture is a little old. They don't like residents to drink alcohol in the rooms, which helps to keep the peace. read more

This was my second time living in NYC doing an internship over the summer, and I could not have been more pleased with how everything went for me with EHS this past summer. I was in a great location at Cooper Square, close enough to my office as well as to a lot of night life. The staff members were great, and helped set up events for the residents. On top of that, we were given breakfast and coffee every Wednesday morning which was a really nice thing to wake up to and look forward to on Wednesdays. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the security of the building was taken very seriously, which gave me a peace of mind. I would highly recommend any college student working in NYC to live at an EHS apartment this coming summer. read more

Love the building and the staff, really helpfull and very resposible. Every month they have a bunch of events, This past month i went to 3 of them and had a blast plus meet people from different schools and we have soo much in common that i could not believe it. I wish i could stay longer in NYC and continue living with EHS in this building. Oh! and the location is amazing, there are lots of trains that are close to the residence. Since the dorm is inside the hotel, we get to use the laundry machines, gym and is very secure (which for my parents this was a plus when reserving) yeah, there was a problem with the hot water something that was not their fault but they kept us informed and even gave us breakfast because of the inconvenience. I mean my friends that live in apartments they have problems all the time and yet they never get a compesation from their landlords. It's a great deal to know that you have someone to help you even when you have the smallest problem. I wouldnt know why someone would hate living with EHS, there are lots of amenities, and yes I also pay for overnight guests but they get to use all the amenities I use while they stay with me (I mean for $5??? not even a hostal would charge that)... read more

This place is a joke. Despite many of my friends telling me not to stay here I did because of the convenience (no broker fees, utilities). Either way, it ends up being way more expensive than getting your own bedroom in someones apartment of craigslist or airbnb. Pros Convenient Great locations Other students Safe, secure Always have rooms available (because people don't want to live there..) Cons TERRIBlE staff Rooms look nothing like the website Guest Policy - you cannot have people in your room unless you pay for them far in advance. it is ridiculous. my roommate had to use some of my guest days so his friend could stay a little longer. The rooms - look like they came out of a horror movie. My room had cockroaches. There was rotten stuff in the fridge from the last tenants that lived there. My desk was underneath my bed, and I could barely walk around. Our bathroom was unfinished and the bathtub had a huge rend in it. They take forever to fix stuff. Overall, you can get something much nicer of other websites. This place is a joke. After living there for one quarter in 2013, I have to say it is one of the worst places that I have ever lived at. I strongly urge anyone wanting to move here to read their terms of agreement and residence rules before even considering moving in. The building security and the building director has to be the some of the most rude; impolite people working in this building. Even though this is not an EHS issue, it is something you will have to live with when residing in this building. While living there, I often experienced RA's knocking on my door asking for "illegal" artifacts, which included alcohol (regardless of your age), coffeemakers and even toasters! While living here, I felt like I was being treated like a middle schooler living in a very conservative environment. If you are able to take care of yourself, and want to live independently, this is not the place to be living as you are able to find a better place to live for a lower price in Manhattan. Here, you will not get your own room within the "apartment" unless you book a single room to begin with. The information, and especially the pictures on their website is extremely misleading, the rooms in general look old and depressing. It does not seem like they have renovated the rooms for more than two decades. The chairs and the bed were very uncomfortable; I had a power outage at least once every week, spoiling most of my food over and over. The Wi-Fi went out every 15 minutes, making it impossible to get any sort of internet-dependent work done. I have very few good things to say about EHS New Yorker; at least some of the RA's were nice, although there are a lot of power-hungry, totalitarian, inconsiderate exceptions. Upon departure, I was charged for a damage that had been in the room since before I even moved in! I strongly question why my college recommended this residence to begin with. I see that some of the employees at the residence have commented on other reviews trying to mask the realities by blaming the previous management, I say that this place is still nowhere near what they claim to be. read more

DO NOT MOVE HERE! It is absolutely terrible. EHS says they will help you with the problems going on in the building, BUT they will not! I am living here and working for about 4 months now. I am a native to New York, and I thought before moving into this EHS housing it would be fine. Well, I should have just got an apartment because it would have been SO much nicer for the price I pay for this crap hole. Not only are the rooms absolutely disgusting and small, but they smell weird/moldy and there are stains all over the floors. I have had COCKROACHES in my room, yes this is normal sometimes for apartments in the city, but they still come back. THE WORST is that since August, there has been construction going on the floor right beneath me at ALL times of the day. I go to sleep with extremely loud drills/banging at 12am and wake up at 7 am with the noise. IT IS ABSOLUTELY MISERABLE! They have no idea when it will end, and I don't think it will end for a very long time because they are re-doing the whole floor. It gets better though! HA. They turn off the water all the time, sometimes with a notification but most of the time you never get notified. I woke up for work one morning and the water wasn't working, I was pissed. One time the water was out for a good 2 days... I have given it so many chances, and this place just keeps disappointing me. And after looking at these other reviews from 2012, they have had the same problems. So looks like nothing has changed with the management... I will probably be moving out, I wish I saw these reviews before moving in. Also, the area is not great either, it is crowded 27/7 with people. Yea it is near Penn Station, but that's not really a good thing. And someone told me a girl got her iPhone stolen out of her hand right outside The New Yorker hotel doors. The only positive things I have to say about this place is: it has a gym & laundry room, kitchen on the 15th floor, and is next to a Diner. read more

EHS a place were fun goes to die. I was a resident for one year. From the moment I moved in I felt extremely uncomfortable. I was placed in a dusty cramped room with two others. This room was radically over priced and disgusting, I've even seen cockroaches. The residence directors that run the place are complete morons and couldn't even run a race if they tried! They were very unhelpful and didn't care about anyone in the dorms. EHS is supposedly a non-profit company but that was completely untrue. The money we paid never went back into the rooms that we stayed in, just into the pockets of the people running the place. The security downstairs was always rude and disrespectful. Constantly asking for your student ID to get in and if you don't have one right away they give you hostile tones. The hallways were only cleaned once a week by someone who obviously didn't give a shit about the place and it showed. All in all do not come here! This is a warning to all take your money and time elsewhere. read more

I lived at EHS New Yorker for 1 year. My room was terrible are cost me around $19,000 in total. My roommate and I paid an extra $600 for a large double. Instead, we got a regular double. We called and emailed to get our $600 back but the owners said no. The room was small and an outdated shade of green. The floors were dark and dirty upon entry. There was a small window but it looked out to another building. So there was no natural light and this made the room very dark. When my parents walked into the room they felt they were in a "basement". The bathroom had green tiles and looked original to the hotel. My roommate and I had lots of problems with the sink. You are only allowed to have a coffee maker and no microwave or the toaster oven. But I kept my toaster oven in the closet when I wasn't using it just in case of a random room inspection. My room was located on the 9th floor and I needed to go upstairs to the 15th floor to cook. Tourists in the elevators were great. Whenever I wanted to cook, all the stoves where either taken or broken. The 6 stoves were shared by all the residents and some did not know how to clean up after themselves. Most of the time I cooked in the microwave. There was no oven so good luck to making cookies. There is a laundry room downstairs. It is rather easy to get a washing machine but to get a dryer is a different story. Everyone would be waiting for drying because there was around 8 that worked out of the 10. I had to dry the clothes 2 times in order to get them dry because they didn't work well. It also bothered me that I had to pay $5 every time a guest slept over.
