The food is not good. Unhealthy for the most part. Everything is deeply fried with an orange-ish oil. The bread is never fresh. They serve GMO snacks instead of normal bread and this is unacceptable after paying so much for rent. The bread they serve in the morning is the cheapest and contains chemical shortenings and cottonseed! I am attaching a pic of the bioengineered food ingredients of one of the snacks. Also, the portions are very small. They are especially precious about the entrees. If they have shrimp as an entrée, you will get 4-5 small shrimp. In the morning, a mini bagel. On weekends they have one main meal. Dinner is not served. 4 small shrimp leave me hungry. I took pictures of it, complained with the manager who apologized, however, it keeps on happening. Now that the food prices went higher, 4 small shrimp is the rule. read more

I stayed here for a short period of time this summer and it was a terrible experience. It's not worth the money to have to go through so much trouble. The place isn't as advertised, for the most part. The amenities aren't as pretty and sometimes dirty (can often see dead cockroaches on the staircase) The study room is very small and, when it's open, max 2 people can be there for max 1 hour. There isn't a communal space, nor a lounge. In the summer, one has to pay extra on a monthly basis just to keep the AC in the room as there is nowhere else to go other than your room. We tried hanging out in the lobby to get some air but the manager didn't seem happy about that. The staff was rude and didn't seem to care about residents. The manager Julia leads this general attitude. I had issues with the wi-fi (too slow in the room and in the study room it didn't work at all) and she said I should have called their provider. I spent hours trying to handle what was their issue, really. I went back to talk to the manager and they said she couldn't see me. It felt like a was a number (a check) for them. Residents are entitled to 2 meals a day, but they don't tell you that it is often the same meal repeated at lunch and dinner. Just stirred up, meat and veggies burnt a little more, in an effort to make the dishes look different. At lunch, on alternate days, you have a choice of a salad or a sandwich. On sandwich days I used to walk out starving. Very small portions. In the morning you could only get yogurt and fruit, a boiled egg or a pastry. No hot food was served. I asked why and I was told that they were running at a 20% capacity. The place is indeed quite empty. The lease you sign isn't a real lease. You don't have the same rights than a normal tenant would have. They can evict you whenever they like and can enter your room when you're not in. It overall feels like a low star hotel and not a real home. Overpriced for what you're getting. For short stays the Markle is fine. For actual living, no. I like the Jeanne D'Arc residence much more. It's much cheaper and they have a beautiful quiet library with wifi where you can study for as long as you want. read more

I'll keep it short and sweet. It's the spot to be if your young and need a clean safe place to stay while studying or working in NYC. Staff is helpful and understanding. Meals are included in your stay as there is no kitchen and they couldn't be better than they are! Lots of options and variety. I have brought several friends here to stay with me and dine together. Few upcharges like AC or a cot fee but these are reasonable. There has been a recent change in management and it shows. The new hospitality among the staff is apparent! read more

I had no choice but to live here for almost a whole semester and it was honestly shocking how poor the experience was. 1. Staff: Most staff were quite emotionless/rude/harsh except a couple. They are also quiet apathetic and very judgmental. My friend was wearing a tank top and jeans, with absolutely no cleavage/stomach/anything showing. Just her shoulders and baggy jeans. She was asked rudely by a staff member to "cover up". This is an all women's organization, yet has sexist staff members. 2. Heating/air conditioning: You have to pay extra for air conditioning, and it gets very hot in the rooms during the summer. Heating is free in the winter but the heaters don't turn off; the dials on them don't work. Even with all my windows open in 30 degree weather, my room was still an oven. The heat constantly breaks as well, several of my friends had to ask maintenance to fix it many times. 3. Plumbing: One positive part of the Markle is that you get your own bathroom. However, my toilet seemed to have a leaky part in it, causing it to rust if I left it alone for too long. My neighbor's toilet couldn't go a few days without breaking and the toilet wouldn't flush. 4. Wifi: The wifi is incredibly slow. It was a huge hindrance while trying to simply do homework. Watching a show/Youtube was not an option. They give you a paper when you move in that says they can kick you off the wifi for using too much bandwidth, as well as argue with you as to why you were using so much in the first place if you try to connect again. 5. Guest policies: There are absolutely no men allowed, including women/men, in the building. An incident where a trans woman attempted to visit her friend in her room occurred, where (I assume) the boss lady of the building screamed her head off at her and kicked her out. They are only allowed on the first floor lobby, and not past 11 pm. When you move in, they completely fail to tell you that you must register guests 48 hours in advance if they're going to stay overnight. This was written nowhere on the rules, and when you tell them it's not, they scold you for not "just asking about it". Not only that, the guest fee is 85$ a night, which is more expensive than most air bnb's in the area. 6. Fees/restrictions: Everything at the Markle costs money-- a fridge, air conditioning, overnight guests, as well as a $150 fine for smoking anywhere on the property, or having possession of alcohol. A residence with only 18-60 year old women is a completely dry building. They are obviously either greedy or desperate for funds. There are no microwaves or toaster ovens allowed, so you either have to eat the iffy food in the basement, or buy a hot meal somewhere every time you're hungry. The fridge I got had an awful smell in it and made all my food taste strange, and was literally the size of an ice box. Laundry was about 5$ for a wash and dry and the laundry card can only be bought with a 5$ bill. And then you have to recharge it after that with only 5s, 10s, and 20s. So, overall... Pros: - Good location - Own bathroom - Food is sometimes okay - Safe building - Rooftop area - Laundry in building - Common area on 4th floor with vending machine/TV - Good for elderly women (lots of elderly people) Cons: - Terrible wifi - Broken heating/plumbing - Rude/transphobic/apathetic staff - Lots of restrictions (dry building, no men, no pets, etc.) - Lots of fees (possession of alcohol, smoking, overnight guest, AC, fridge, etc.) - Doors/walls are thin - Expensive - No kitchen - No microwave/any sort of heating appliance - Hidden rules/things they don't tell you about until you get in trouble - Slow elevator (allot 5-8 minutes in your commute for the elevator, especially in the morning) read more

I haven't lived here--however, I got a tour of the facilities - so i hope that can help. pros: - own bathroom - singles or doubles available - small gym (2 thread mils, and one other equipment) - small salon (reasonable prices) - rooftop views - clean facilities - laundry ($5 for the card, $1 per load) - 2 meals a day--which i heard the food is pretty good. - unlimited ice tea 24/7 cons: - from residents--scanty internet. best on the 2nd and 4th floor - staff can be a bit rude--esp the one who handle rent/application/etc. - bedrooms look a bit old -- bed and desk especially. - expensive side -- $1515 for single bedroom, $65 for ac unit installed per month, $20 refridge installed, etc. - 3 month min staying (so if you want to live for a month--you are out of luck). - strict timings on when the meal is served - girls only - limited study rooms --there is one floor -- but it also has a tv in there. read more

My 14-year-old daughter and I stayed at the Markle recently while she completed the 2019 ABT summer intensive. Our time there proved exceptional. Having two meals provided per day for each of us freed me from cooking responsibilities during the five weeks, allowing us to enjoy time in the city more fully. Each weekday, we ate breakfast together, then took the short walk to the studios with a packed lunch for my daughter. As we were able to rent a small refrigerator during our stay, we kept a supply of snacks as well as my own lunches in the room. While she was in class, I was able to do laundry onsite, take a book to one of the gorgeous nearby parks, or walk along the Hudson and explore the city with fellow ABT moms and Markle residents. In the late afternoon, I would pick my daughter up at the studios, we would visit a shop or two, and then we would return to the Markle for dinner. Our air-conditioned double room with private bathroom provided a respite from the summer heat, and the centrally located building with 24-hour security granted us access to Manhattan's incredible sites from a secure place to which we could come home. We did not even have to leave the building to attend church as the one we attended met in the attached Salvation Army building. With its international and intergenerational residents, the Markle introduced us to a fascinating community of people. We not only formed friendships with a number of ABT attendees but also with women who had lived at the Markle for twenty plus years. All agreed that in terms of city living, the Markle is a gem. My daughter and I only regret that the rooftop about which we had heard rave reviews was closed during our stay. We are not terribly upset, however. If accepted to the summer intensive next year, we will enjoy the rooftop then as we'll definitely be back at the Markle! read more

I just spent 5 weeks at The Markle while taking a class in NYC. It was perfect for what I needed. The staff was always very friendly and helpful, and the dining room had healthy options including salad and fruit at each meal. The residents were friendly and diverse and I made some very nice friends! The neighborhood is the best in the city, quiet and walkable to the High Line and the west side piers, and all the Village has to offer. The building is safe and near 3 subway lines. The only drawback is the roof top is not open due to construction with no completion date, so, this should probably be mentioned on the website. I did have an issue with bugs but they switched my room and the second one was fine. My only suggestion would be pest control in all the rooms and common areas. I would stay there again. read more

After 5 months, I have now the courage and inner peace to talk about this. I lived at Markle for two years, and those two years shaped my New York life. I met tons of friends and I felt safe and very happy there. The place is one of the best places to live in NY. Amazing location, the rooms, your bathroom, meals, gym, rooftop, security and tons of friends. It was my home. I recommended the place to any person that I met, and even a couple of friends stayed there because of me. Now, here comes bad part. Marcy Orr, the manager (and her husband Randy). When you sign the contract to live at the Markle, there are several rules you have to follow, which I did. I did not break any rule. Paid my rent on time, no men, no alcohol, no smoking, no candles, etc. BUT, there are lots of unwritten rules, which you can get kicked out for. Yes, you can get kicked out for NOT breaking the rules. Me and other 5 or 6 women got kicked out this year, for no reason whatsoever. I was a very nice person (just ask anyone there), but I have a tendency to want to fix things and make them better and more beautiful. I am a photographer and studying interior design. I committed the "sin" to try this at Markle. And it seems Marcy didn't like that. All of my friends would complain about the food or that it was freezing, and I would go and tell Marcy. She always got mad. These and a lot more things happened. Early this year, my neighbor got kicked out. She was asking us not to say anything because the Orr's told her that she couldn't say anything (??). The reason she got kicked out? nobody knows. Then, one by one, more and more women were being kicked out. Until it was my turn. I got kicked out in July 2016, and they gave me 3 months left. By the way, all of this after a very nice (and as it seems, fake) talk with the Orr's. It was a tremendous emotional hit for me. I've had some negative experiences in my past to make me want to live in a place like Markle. So I got really scared. I asked for explanations, reasons, anything, and they just shut the door of communication with me, as if I was a criminal. I wrote their bosses, and it was the same treatment. They didn't care at all about how I was feeling. In normal circumstances, out there, people give you warnings about your behavior so you could change it. But they didn't. That makes me think that in reality there was nothing wrong with my behavior, Marcy just didn't like it. I was "defiying her authority", by not being a sheep. Now, about Marcy, I kinda feel sorry for her. In my perception, she is living a fake personal life, so blocked that she can't even see it. A fake marriage. We all see it. She's a control freak that yells all the time and has to do everything herself. One day she is extremely nice to you, and the next day she would scream at you if you fall asleep in the sofa at the tv room (literally scream). The last day that I was there I had a huge fight with her because she wasn't allowing me to do my moving out correctly. Nobody from the staff could help me, they didn't allow any outsiders, and she wasn't allowing me to put my things at a hall downstairs. It was so irrational how bad that was. Incredible. Later, she came up to me and apologized for laughing at my face. I felt so sorry for her, because she could only see that little part of all the harm she was doing. And honestly, when she laughed at my face, it was the only time in 2 years that I could see a glimpse of her real self. She's always controlled, fake, controlling. Zero empathy. None. The staff hates her and are all scared of her. And I have no idea why they are still there. They should have been moved to another location already, but somehow their bosses want them still there. I moved to Jersey City. It was the only place I could afford. This experience changed my life in NY completely. I've been in therapy several times. I suffer from depression and this made it extremely hard (by the way, they knew this). This was a powerful reason why I lived at the Markle, with people. And I tried to move to the other residences, but couldn't. Either they closed or there was a waiting list. I don't want to sound as a victim, but it's been one of the hardest experiences of my life. Being kicked out from your home with no reason whatsoever and without the chance to make it work is extremely disempowering. Specially coming from Salvation Army captains, which they "stand for women". You can see how it's all a facade. It's all fake. They don't really care. The only thing they care about is RULES. Just ask them. And of course, their rules, not the rules that you sign for. What happened to the other women? I don't know. I know one of them had to leave NY because she couldn't afford it. One thought of suing, but found out that a woman in earlier years did sue the Salvation Army and she lost. They are covered with everything, so don't even bother. Bottom line, the place is amazing, live there, but just stay away from Marcy. read more

If you're new to NYC and don't have people to roommate with, The Markle is good for a temporary stay. Because the units have no kitchen, it is not ideal if you like to cook. The 4-star rating that yelp is currently showing is inaccurate, if all negative reviews were factored in. This place could easily be a 4 star place, if the employees were welcoming, kind and helpful, but they are not. To get a true picture of The Markle, be sure to scroll down just below the last review on each page - click on "other reviews that are not currently recommended" (Yelp has this line in a faded gray, which is difficult to notice). They are some very informative reviews that yelp did not include in the Star Ratings. Old historic building, wonderful, safer neighborhood than most, convenient location, inspirational artwork hang throughout, private bath, meals included (served during specific hours), Housekeeping included, but they are not very good. The downside - Expensive. Staff can be very rude and intimidating. Jessica seemed nice when we brought our daughter there. Once moved in, she quickly turned and showed her controlling, unreasonable and rude side. They treat residents (who are paying A LOT to stay there), poorly and disrespectfully. It is hard to ask any question without being treated mean or snarky by the staff. Just picking up a delivered package at the desk can turn into an ordeal and if you need to borrow a cart for a larger box, good luck. You can be walking in the front door with your luggage and struggling with the door and steps - the employees will just watch you struggle and not offer any help. You pay extra for air conditioning, which is necessary in the summer. Some of the maintenance men are creepy and intrusive. Staff has entered rooms, unannounced. Once, when our daughter said she was sick, and didn't want anyone in and told them so; they used their master key and entered anyway. Another time, a worker was in her room when she got out of the shower. So scary. Even hanging a "do not disturb until after 9am" posted on the door, did not stop them from waking you up. There was never any respect for the residents varied schedules. For the price paid to occupy a small room, you should be afforded privacy, as requested. The lobby is beautiful and the only place to have male guests. But don't be loud, laugh or enjoy yourself with friends/family, without being scolded. The rules are tough, most of which are livable. No males above the first floor, which is fine; but it's even tough to even get your dad and brother up to help you move in and out. The overnight guest charge is very high, especially if they are staying in your room. I understand a nominal charge, but they are not taking up any space other than what you're already paying for. My advice: Do all you can to make friends with the front desk staff. There are a couple there that are nice and reasonable, but most are not. Our favorite employee at the time was Cheddy - usually polite and tried to be reasonable and helpful. For service, I would give 1 star or less, but I gave 2 stars, just because it is a good place start in NYC, if you're not ready to sign a year lease, are unsure what area you want to live in, or for a temporary stay while at school or doing an internship. All of this said, my daughter did live there for 2 school years. We were happy it was safe, convenient building, but wish it wasn't so stressful dealing with the staff over problems (leaks, clogged plumbing, heat not working), needing a little assistance with a package, flexibility in meals (for dietary needs), etc. The overall treatment of residents was as if the residents are sneaky, dishonest, rule-breaking, and a bad person, just hoping to cause trouble. Management attitudes of expecting the worst from people, causes staff to be so hard-core strict and unwilling to serve the tenant. Staff should perform and live by the inspirational artwork hanging throughout the building (don't be fooled by these messages, as we were). As part of the Salvation Army, this building's management and staff have a serious problem with being compassionate and serving. read more

This residence indeed has old-fashioned rules but that's part of the charm...it's like living in Europe PLUS it's on the prettiest block in Greenwich Village. I stayed in the Markle Evangeline Residence in 2013. I truly enjoyed my stay there. The people there are very friendly and warm. The staff is always very helpful. The room I stayed in was lovely. I also enjoyed the food they serve. The place is secure and safe. You can make friends there from all over the world! I would definitely recommend this place! My daughter lived here two summers in a row while interning in NYC. The first summer went well, it was literally down the street from her job and she didn't have any encounters with mice. The second year was a completely different story. Everyone on her floor, the 10th, had towels under their doors and she would see them scurrying down the halls when she got off the elevator. Everyone was complaining and they claimed they were cochroaches.....Really? I called about it and they seemed surprised! I don't believe for a christian organization that they have a human touch. The maintenance guy was great to my daughter but I had tipped him$50 when we arrived and asked him to make sure she was taken care of. He went thru her room for her when the mice situation was really bad and helped her a lot. The sad part of the residence is it has the potential of being GREAT as the location is ideal. The fact they are female only is a huge plus and she did always feel safe there. However, they seemed to have the attitude that if there was a problem, you should just deal with it. read more

The only good thing that these residence has is the location, besides the location I don't recommend it. The treatment that they give you is horrible the couple that is in charge are really "fake" and a bit resist and the woman in charge of the applications, Jessica is seriously the worst. I really had a bad experience with the new administration that they have. They also demand a lot to apply like if they were the best thing. I agree with everything written by the previous 2 star rating. There are some great things about the Markle: the location, the short lease, the meals, the security, however, there are some things you need to be aware of if you want to live here. The rules are strict. In ways in was nice not to have to worry about visitors but it was tough not being able to have friends over late at night and not even family that are men be able to see your room/help move you in. They say they have community events which are great but when I was there over half were canceled and the ones that were available were not well attended. I was disappointed by this because there were a variety of people living there that I would have loved to get the chance to meet. The staff was not always helpful. I felt like they weren't happy to answer questions and didn't enjoy their job. I also felt like I was treated like a child with some of their responses and didn't feel respected. Their guest rate is so expensive. If friends were to visit, it was cheaper for them to get an Airbnb in NYC than to rent a cot from the Markle and stay in my tiny room. My mom came to visit me for three days and I had to pay an extra 240 for her to stay. That's more than I was paying for my room/night and all they did was put a cot in my room. That is a rate of over $150 per night. Also I had to remind staff three times about getting the cot to my room and it didn't arrive until late at night. The checkout process really disappointed me. Check out is at 10am. I had everything ready to go and just hung out at my room with my suitcases packed. I expected someone to come by and make sure my room was clean or someone to call about checkout time but no one came. I got a call at noon asking if I'd still be checking out today. I said I had everything ready and immediately came to the front desk. I returned my keys and was ready to check out. Then was told I would be charged $100 for a late checkout. I let them know I had everything ready to go and expected some sort of check out and asked if there was anyway out of the $100 charge. I was very polite and calm but I felt like I didn't get that in return. I felt like I was being scolded for not paying attention to the checkout process. Management told I could wait to talk to someone after they came back for lunch. I waited on the couch and heard staff talk poorly about me behind the counter. I was tempted to let them know I could hear them, but figured that wouldn't help my cause. Then a lady showed me where I could store my bags and had me walk down steps with 50 lbs bags and I later learned there was a ramp right around the corner. I tripped and hurt my ankle and instead of asking me if I was ok she lectured me for wearing sandals in the city. As I waited to talk to management I looked at my ankle and that same lady who had me go down stairs with my bag told me not to have my foot up on their furniture. At this point I felt like I was being bullied. After I waited an hour, I heard this same lady tell someone else the manager wouldn't be back for a while. I was really upset with this because I was waiting and she never bothered to tell me it would be a while. Even with all this, and politely explaining it to management, I was still charged $100 for a late fee. This is more than I make a day and for a simple misunderstanding from a non-profit organization that is there to help people afford living, I was extremely disappointed. I left my room spotless and know I did not prevent anyone from moving in early, so I wish they could have been a little flexible and if not that, had some respect and better customer service. The internet was also not very good. I could not watch netflix in my room. I spoke with someone once about it and she said she checked it and it was fine but when moving out an older gentleman told me I should have been able to watch movies in my room. So if you do decide to live here, remember the rules are strict, they are not afraid to charge you extra for things (so be careful), community events aren't worth it, staff may treat you like a child, but the location and idea of short-term housing can be worth it. read more

I don't know why my first review was filtered...but Swetha V, who never lived there has her review still posted..... Here is my review again. Couldn't wait to get out of here. A room is now over $1700. The furniture was falling apart and the rooms are generally in bad condition. No central air conditioning. The carpeting in my room smelled. The bathroom looked 30 or 40 years old. The food is crazy salty. The one computer and printer for guest use is no longer available. Internet service is sketchy. Desk staff /maids/kitchen staff were always friendly and tried to be helpful. There were haircutters and a salon , where I got excellent $25 haircuts and a bit of good advice and friendship from and older fatherly stylist. Even though many residents found it convenient and it was CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP. They closed it. The long time residents were "motherly" and sometime just weird and interesting. Mice, roaches, and waterbugs were not interesting! The managers are unfriendly. Sometimes MEAN and aloof. They have a "if you don't like it, it's too bad attitude". I have seen and heard him yelling his and intimidating guests. Once again most of the employees there were very nice, other guests too. I now have a studio apartment in queens for $1100 and I'm glad to be out of there! read more
