Expensive mediocre domestic tourist trap would be an apt description of Egon Some people like them because they have a large selection of varied dishes, but that means they're all mediocre at best I tried the Schweinshaxe and it was just meh, being overcooked so it was dry on some parts and very little taste in the condiments. Others in the party had spareribs, pasta and quesadillas that they also found mediocre. The Chèvre salad was the only dish described as good I also wanted some desert and ordered some ice cream, which should be the "easiest" dessert there is, but it had some ice crystals in it... They're also not a proper restaurant as you have to order from the counter, fortunately they do have app ordering to the table after Covid. But the ETA in the app is just a wild guess, and it will say "finished" without you having seen the dish That means a simple thing as getting the coffee together with the ice you ordered is not possible Coupled with outrageously expensive prices you should never really go here. The food was good. I just ordered a club sandwich but the sauces on it were good and I've never had a club sandwich with a fried egg on it before. But I liked it. I started by sitting outside. No one came out so after a while I saw a bar code which I scanned and ordered from. I thought my coffee would come out quickly but after a while, I thought maybe I did something wrong so I came in. My coffee was ready so I just stayed inside since it was chili outside. The ambiance is very cozy, both inside with the candles and dark wood as well as outside with furry blankets. There is MUCH to love about the Egon restaurants, of which we visited several across Norway multiple times. The ambience is unique and not a typical restaurant. The menu is large and everyone in your party is guaranteed to find something. Burgers, chicken sandwich, steak, salad, pizza, vegetarian options. Everyone will find something. I also love the operation of Egon (and most restaurants in Norway) as it's more efficient than restaurants in other places, such as the United States. Here's how it works: You get seated at a marked table with menus. Take your time looking over the menus. When you're ready, order at the bar. Tell them your table number and what you'd like. You pay right then and there. Food comes out in a short bit - delicious! - and enjoy. When you're all set and ready to go --- GO! Love the efficiency, the food, the ambience, and compared to currency standards in Norway, it's a good value. Overall I give Egon restaurants 5 stars out of 5. TIP: Especially for American diners, soft drinks/soda will be a bit more expensive than at home and NO FREE REFILLS. Also, be sure to ask for tap water if that's what you'd like (and ice too. During my vacations in Norway, I visited the Egon hotel every day. Most places are not opened for breakfast until 10 a.m. Those that are opened before then are mostly coffee shops. My friend and I were looking for a hearty breakfast. We found out Egon serves a breakfast buffet. I'm pretty sure because it's a hotel it caters to foreigners. However, they did have many Norwegian offerings. The food is not kept warm enough, everything's at room temperature. However, the breakfasts for the hotel we stayed in were served here and it was delicious, with many assorted items and good service. We tried dinner last night and it was also very good; we both had the northern Norwegian cod. It's a popular place with lines of people waiting to get in, but it moves pretty quickly. I decided to make a stop here yesterday for a sandwich to approx 170kr and it was looking pretty good when it came to the table. But when i got to start trying to cut my self a decent piece it came down to two surprises. 1 was that the bread was hard and the 2nd was the amouth of salad vs. Shrimps. My mom ordered the exact same thing and it was no different from my portion so i assume it is how they usually make them. Egon restaurants are a good choice for å quick lunch or just a place to take å drink or coffee. Frequently used in the summertime during lunch breaks, since it's located near train station. They have breakfast buffet, so if you are hungry and arrived in Oslo their breakfast starts around 06.30. The food is good for this type of food (pizza, burgers and so on). I will just start by saying I have managed to go 2 years in Norway and never eaten at Egon. I was feeling pretty proud of myself (I kind of hate chain places like that) until my family came and we were looking for a place to eat and needed a solution that was reasonably priced and needed it quick! We went to Egon and it turns out it is Norway's take on American-ish food. Usually when this happens, I leave a place very disappointed. This was no different, unfortunately. After seeing their menu and nothing sounding appetizing, I went with their unlimited pizza bar. Peppes has an unlimited pizza bar that they should pay you to eat (b/c it's so nasty), so I kept my fingers crossed this one was better. It was. But not by much. Still the typical Norwegian pizza with lack of taste in the dough and 457299 toppings on it to mask the taste of the crust and dough. I find the whole Egon experience a little weird. The restaurant was so large and had so many floors that I actually got really lost on my way from the pizza bar up to my table. It was embarrassing because the tables are so close together that getting back to my area turned out to be some feat! I also find it weird that you order at a random place in the restaurant and then sit down in another area and wait on your food. But do you have a server? I was so baffled by this. We concluded we didn't have an actual server in the end because, naturally, no one came to fill up our water or anything. Oh well. I won't be back. Oslo's food scene (and anywhere else in the world) is too good to waste time on a place like this. read more

Staying at Scandic Byporten and the breakfast is at Egon Restaurant. I think it's a quit regular breakfast with different things to choose from, lots of bread,turkey, salmon, fresh fruits, smoothies etc. You will be satisfied If you like the typical things for breakfast. For me, who eats healthy I'm missing different nuts, nut spread and other things. I think that they can do a better job with the offering of healthy things to choose from. The interior is dark with wooden details. The sceambled eggs are very dry and full of parsley. I would prefer to have it more creamy. It's a quiet room since it's divided in small sections. Love the cappucino from the machine. Would prefer if the had a playlist with nice music, than have the norwegian radio on. Ordered a philly cheese steak and bit into a bone? a rock? Twice - almost chipped a tooth - twice. Told the staff when asked that I didn't want it remade or another one just take it off the bill. Was told okay and offered a free dessert. Well 5 minutes later he comes back with what looks like my sandwich minus the two piles of chewed up meat I spat out with the bone/rock/metal - say no thanks. When I leave I check to make sure he'll reimbursed the amount for the sandwich (you pay first here unfortunately). He says he can't do that. So now I'm confused because he said he would. So I say fine we'll take him up on the offer for dessert - two Irish cream coffees (more than the one dessert he offered but now I'm getting upset). He says he can't serve booze as compensation even though it's listed as a dessert. Great. So that works out to about 700 kroner (100 cdn for two drinks and the meal my date ordered). Will never be back - avoid at all costs. The menu says "if you have a good time tell your friends! If not tell us why" - well I'll definitely be telling my friends about this but it won't be anything good I'll tell you that for free. And if you do tell the staff you have a bad time don't bother because it will do you no good. Save your time - life is too precious. read more

This place screams 'Tourist Trap' and although it is exactly that, it's not THAT bad albeit a bit overpriced. I came here for late lunch / early dinner (the lunch menu stops at 3pm so we ordered from the dinner menu). It was a really sunny day so we wanted to go somewhere where we could sit outside and this is one of the few choices you have that is open on a Sunday and has outdoor seating. It's conveniently located right out the front of Oslo Central Station so would probably be a good spot to kill a couple of hours if you've just arrived and you're waiting to check into your hotel. The food is American style but not American quality. I had the seafood salad (162NOK) which had a pretty generous portion of scampi and 'lobster' (krepsehaler = mini lobster) and a small grilled salmon fillet on top. Most of the salad was made up of cos lettuce and a few cherry tomatoes. It came with a couple of wedges of focaccia. The burgers are not bad, prices range from 163 NOK to 188. The burger at least tasted of real meat, not like the frozen patties you sometimes get when ordering a burger in Norway. They were juicy and came with a pot of fried potato which was pretty average. The burger buns are fluffy white rolls - no gourmet brioche buns here. The baked potato is a winner - but it's hard to mess up a baked potato so this is a pretty safe bet, although at 117NOK, it's a pretty outrageous price for a potato... Don't bother with the steak - you're bound to be disappointed and they are around the 335NOK mark. I caught a glimpse of the pizza at another table - it looked terrible. You could probably get a better pizza out of box. The place was packed but we all got our meals within 25 minutes so they get an extra star for that. I have eaten breakfast at another Egon in Bergen which was attached to our hotel and it was really good. Big buffet with a good selection of hot and continental breakfast choices. It was included in our hotel rate so I'm not sure how much it was. read more

Good service, food is nice and taken care of, overpriced catalog as expected for Norwegian establishments, moderately clean bathrooms (very positive if one thinks about their traffic and location) and most waiters are thoughtful and attentive. Sometimes though it might be hard to find them for help if the traffic gets crazy. Egon has customers because of their location, the existence of alcohol and hungry travellers. Pretty basic combination of business incentive as far as I understand. It doesn't require any particular skills or talents. You hire young, spiff and obedient people, preferably fenales and put a bunch of candles around with a wooden interior. That is the most of it. They are ok, but they are not meant to be a memorable establishment, Egon is more like a glorified American style dinner restaurant. I have been there at least 400 times during the past 9 years and I can tell that the particular Egon restaurant in Byporten is the chain's moneymaker. Just had the Egon burger with fries. The burger was well done, tasty but unimaginative. I added a bunch of black pepper and really made a difference. The fries definitely needed some more time to fry. The only really interesting thing here is the decor: little bit of everything Scandinavia. So, come for the decor not for the food. read more
