I grew up near San Angelo and had fond memories of going to Eggemeyer's for the fun, eclectic gifts. We were in town for Thanksgiving week and told my family it would be a fun outing. And I had planned to shop and support local and pick up some Christmas gifts. Boy was I wrong! I can honestly say I've never been treated more rudely in a store in my life. It was almost as if they didn't want any shoppers in the store! One of the older women behind a counter glared at us the whole time and was seething with condescension when I asked a question about one of the products. She obviously did NOT want to be bothered. The store is still adorable and the collection of merchandise is fun, albeit a little overpriced. I was willing to pay a little more to support local but decided if they didn't want us in there they didn't want my money either. My advice, cross the street and hit up all those stores where we treated amazingly and found lots of great gifts. Eggemeyer's is not worth the hassle. We will not be back. read more

Staff is very rude. Scrolled through some of the reviews and looks like others agree. Went with a friend and as soon as we walked in, I grabbed a stuffed animal that fell over and was glared at by a woman behind the counter. After that, we were holding up stuffed animals and toys and chatting about them and a woman comes up and rudely says "do you guys need anything" followed by "because, it would be awesome if you didn't go around touching everything" then we replied no and apologized. She then turned back around and said "because if there is a problem, you are free to leave" very rudely. We left right then because we were made feel unwelcome. I had planned on purchasing something but put it back. After we left, my friend told me that her family member was once rudely told to leave because her two small children were grabbing stuffed animals to look at. Told this story to a friend and they shared another similar experience. Was told to leave because they were talking loud. If the store is filled with stuffed animals and kids toys why in the world is it not kid friendly OR friendly at all??? read more

Terrible experience! I was trying out a jewelry cleaner that had "try me" on the lid and hadn't noticed right away that I was being stared at by this older lady. My son had noticed, but didn't say anything because he didn't want to assume the worst. I asked her if everything was okay since she was just giving me an ugly look, she just said "I guess." I told her I was just trying the tester to see if I liked it and if there was a problem and she proceeds to tell me " I guess not since you already used it." Her attitude and facial expressions were that of me not being welcomed. Not sure what her issue was, but definitely not ever going back even though I had been a customer several times before. While walking around downtown San Angelo, we found this amazing shop. It had so many amazing items that I could have spent a hour or two in there. They have a great variety of kitchen items, local foods, Christmas decor, goodies for kids, candies, coffee and teas, and wonderful smelling products. Yeah, it's a tourist trap, and most of the stuff in here is pretty expensive. I didn't really find anything that screamed San Angelo that I wanted to take home to family or friends. They have lots of cool novelty stuff but you can find most if it in the big cities. Nothing really unique to San Angelo. Knives, jewelry, wine, candy, coffee, and much more can be found here. Here's where they shine: The confectioneries, homemade jams, salsas, chili mixes, soup mixes, etc. None of them are made by Eggemeyer's (including the chocolates in my pix) but they are all from nearby Texas regions and they're all so damned good. All in all, it's a fun place to kill some time in. There are three separate parts of the building, so make sure you check them all out. This store is a experience stocked with unique and quality items. It misses the mark due old school prohibitions. No strollers, no outside beverages, no backpacks, and unless I missed them, no restrooms. It's a free market and they can do as they want but it is narrow minded and they fall short of greatness because of their policies. read more

What kind of store can keep a man's attention for over an hour? No, I'm not talking about Cabella's or Bass Pro Shop. Eggemeyer's is an incredible collection of...stuff. I'm the cook in the family, so the kitchen store kept my attention for a while. Free samples of coffee and jellies and dips. Yes, I got some. Believe it or not, the banana split chip dip was awesome! Have a seat at the bar to sample some wines. Look at the biggest wind chimes I've ever seen. There was no price sticker on that baby! Middle room has a lot of kid stuff, candy, fudge, all sorts of goodies. Next room, men and women stuff. Some really expensive knives. Perfume, and on and on. I actually enjoyed this place. Surprise! Fascinating diverse place. It is easy to get lost in here for a long time. Picture an historic building that is crammed full of everything touristy, many things classy, some things yummy, and a few rather fascinating gotchas you might not expect. Add in fudge, friendly people, and a super clean place, and you have Eggemeyer's. Partly built into an old car dealership, plan on spending a lot of time browsing through Knick knacks and what nots. There is a good chance if you can't find it here, it might not exist. I found this a fun place and plan to return. read more

My wife and I was in there first I'm brown and she's white. She had a drink and so did I. I got told to leave the store because of the drink and my wife kept hers. I got no service when looking at things and followed around. And the experience from my friend Ok, I'm NOT one to write a bad review & rant. But today I am We went to Eggemeyers and were literally followed the ENTIRE time by an older man. My daughter was carrying around a stuffed animal cat (unsure if we were going to purchase or not) the man says "Are y'all buying that?" I say "idk yet. She's just holding it". He proceeds to follow us to the other side of the store, tells us she can't walk with it if she's not going to buy it. So I say "forget it, we won't be spending any money here, nor will we be back." He KEEPS following us and says that "if every kid grabbed things off the shelves it would look like a K-Mart" What do you do when you're going to purchase something? You hold it until you go to the register to pay. We went sure if we were going to get the stuffed animal or not. But come on. She wasn't grabbing everything off the shelves, making a disaster. She was literally holding one toy. I love(ed) Eggemeyers, and shopping local. But I won't be back. read more

Fun! Wandering through Eggemeyer's is a great way to spend an hour. They have so many interesting things and they're all displayed in a very homey atmosphere. Of course, I'm a sucker for anything Texan and Eggemeyer's doesn't disappoint. I got several children's books set in Texas that I can use as read alouds in my class next year. Eggermeyer's is a beautiful general store with diverse, quality goods. Sadly this store seems to exist soley for the elderly owners' enjoyment, not for locals or tourists. The staff/owners don't typically greet or acknowledge you, however, they do stalk your family in the store and will rudely tell your children to keep their voices down and to play with the toys (that are out intentionally) nicely like "other children". Our children are completely normal. We've looked past it a few times to support a neat local store, but leaving with children that feel bad and embarrassed about themselves for simply being children is ridiculous. Unless you'd like to quietly make a beeline to the item(s) you want, head straight to the register, pay an inflated mark up price, and leave, this isn't the store for you or your family. A quick search in the poorer Google reviews for Eggermeyer's validates that we're not the first case of this and likely won't be the last. The owners can operate their business however they see fit. Unfortunately, this often leads to an insulting, embarrassing and stressful customer experience at Eggermeyer's. read more

Really enjoyed this place in downtown San Angelo. They have lots of different things for all sorts of tastes. The airplanes overhead are a really cool touch. There is a massive wind chime that's about 10 feet tall. The lady said we could take it home for $3500. The sound of it was really deep, but I can't imagine the among of wind it would require. Definately a West Texas item. The store has assorted candies, chocolates, beverages and all sorts of clothes and souvenirs and toys. You can spend a lot of time in here just looking at everything. The staff was friendly. The prices are a little high on most things, but it's targeting the tourist crowd, so that's to be expected. We enjoyed the visit and recommend it. read more

We walked in and next thing you know, it's 2 hours later - there's that much fun stuff here. This is your one-stop shopping for gifts, souvenirs, food, drinks, toys, etc. I even found myself having a conversation with the staff about all sorts of topics, these guys define friendliness. They even have a wine/beer bar where you can sit a spell and relax before resuming your shopping. I loved Eggemeyer's General Store. If I could have bought one of everything, I would have. The candy counter in the front was really fun and I found a bunch of stuff to bring back home as souvenirs (a lot more than was available at DFW). They had tons of old timey toys for the little ones and plenty of cool vintage items. I loved the kitchenware section of the store and liked all the sauces, preserves, soup mixes, etc. The worst part was having to decide what to buy. The ambiance of the store was absolutely wonderful. It just doesn't get any better than this, folks. When traveling to the family ranch east of Angelo at Christmas, we always stop in to get a few truly unique presents each year. It's worth swinging by a couple more times during the year in order to sample the sweets. Amazing shop. You can easily spend an hour or two wandering about. A huge selection of very high quality items in all sorts of different categories (cookware, glassware, jewelry, candies, toys, baby gifts, cards, local books, home fragrances etc etc). They are selling top name brands so it can be pricey to shop here, and you can find the same items online for cheaper sometimes but most often it is worth paying the extra $$ to support a local business.
