I took my van to Ed's for repair. They gave me an estimate of about $125.00. I OKed the repair. When I came to pick up my van, the price was only about $95.00! When I asked why it was less than the estimate, I was told the repair was not as difficult as they thought. Chuck is friendly and really good at explaining things and after fixing the transmission fluid leak and servicing the fluid and filter actually determine that the shifting problem was due to a faulty throttle position sensor giving bad throttle information to the car's computer not really a transmission problem at all which saved me a ton of time and money. Chuck rebuilt my 94 suburban transmission in 2010 when it had 212,000 miles. The transmisionion worked better than the original factory transmission. I noticed the improvement going up long grades with heavy loads. Ever time I go over stevens pass or rye grass I smile and thank Chuck! Now ,11 years later, my suburban has 378,000 miles and shows no sign of giving up. I looks ugly but it sure runs great. Probably, most intelligent people would have just got rid of their vehicle if the transmission went out at 212,000 miles. But, I really like my suburban and didn't want to give it up. It was expensive and I had a lot of angst about thowing good money after bad not knowing how much use I would get after a rebuild. But , I've not regretted my decision. So, I would say if you just really like your classic car or truck and you need a transmission rebuild It's worth it to take it to Chuck. I went back in 2018 with a broken shock mount on the rear drivers side. No one else would try to weld it because it was too close to the gas tank and it would involve dropping the tank. Chuck was able to do it and it has been rock solid ever since. read more

Five stars--I'd go higher if I could. I brought my car in with a transmission leak and Chuck was very honest about my options. After taking the car for a test drive and physically inspecting the transmission on the lift, he told me that the diagnosis would involve removing the transmission to find the cause of the leak. He cautioned me that, although it could be fairly simple, there could be other problems he'd discover once the transmission was open and that this could quickly escalate to well over $1000. Given the age and condition of the car, I felt it best to avoid the costly diagnosis and repair and opt to nurse the transmission until the car got replaced. Chuck also diagnosed an engine problem that other mechanics had missed--and he fixed my battery cables, too! I'd send anyone here who needs transmission work. The crew at Ed's Transmission are a great bunch of very friendly, honest, and hardworking mechanics. Chuck, who manages the place and does the service writing, is a consummate professional in addition to being a really swell dude. Since 2005, I've had these folks do two transmission rebuilds and a bunch of other unrelated work on two different vehicles, so I've visited them about twice a year in the last six or so. By the by, they handle pretty much anything, even though the sign just says "transmissions". All the service they performed was top-notch, and I've never had an issue with any of it. They do warranty their parts and service, though, in case there is a problem afterwards. Chuck is great with initial estimates, and will follow up with you if there are any changes. He will also talk to you about the work, is patient with explanations, and will happily tell you what can wait, and what needs to be tackled immediately. The prices are completely reasonable, given shop rates these days, and for the service, these guys are well worth every penny. The location is pretty convenient, too - just off 99 on Northgate Way, and very close to I-5. Nobody likes to spend money on auto repairs, but if you're looking for a solid crew of cool, honest and reliable technicians to wrench on your vehicle, you can't get any better than these guys. My transmission needed to be fixed. It's going to suck, money and time wise. I don't want to ripped off and I want good service. Online research gave valid points that included taking it to a repair shop that specialized in transmissions. After calling around I chose Ed's because I just was treated with respect when I called. Brought my 2006 Ford Fusion in and Bill took it on a test drive to get a feel of what's wrong (RECOMENDED) which felt like he wasn't trying to screw me. Bill always informed me what was needed and asked for my permission to continue. They also took bids on the parts they needed instead of buying straight from Ford saving me money. So, now I got my car back. It works great. I can't fault anyone on how long it took, but I walked away not feeling screwed. I still need to have the fluids checked after 1000 miles, but the Seattle weather isn't dry enough yet. My wheel alignment needs to be fixed. Ed's does that too.Bill "felt" it when he was test driving my car. No pressure to have that fixed. I'll have them take a look next time, because I will not be dealing with the Ford dealer anymore for the service needs of my car. read more

Brought in a 1991 van that got stuck in 1st one time (possibly a stuck cable). After his test drive, he said 3rd gear was soft and it wasn't looking good. Prematurely told him I'd want to go ahead with a rebuild. But Ed dropped the tranny pan and didn't see shredded transmission metal, AND TOLD ME THIS. Said it had a good shot at many more miles. That is honesty. That is what you look for. read more

It was pouring rain in December when an unsecured load from the pick up truck in front of me dropped a plastic bucket on I-5. The bucket was caught under my car's under carriage and would not budge. After exiting I-5 I pulled into a nearby gas station on Northgate Way. As I was getting my bearings, and within 5 minutes of reaching the gas station, the attendant asked me to leave. I had to find an auto shop as I know nothing about cars. Yelp suggested Ed's. I phoned Ed's in advance because I have no idea what a transmission is. I relayed my problem and the employee was sympathetic and said that if I could get the car to their shop he would take a look. As I turned into the auto shop, the bucket popped loose. An employee came out to collect the bucket. I was still concerned as I was 7 months pregnant and didn't want to drive in a vehicle that might be damaged. They checked it out for me right then and there. When I asked how much, they said "nothing". I couldn't believe it. After the morning I had, these guys were a breath of fresh air. They were so gracious and even took my car immediately. (I noticed there were about 4-5 other cars already on lifts). Based on their amazing treatment of a non-customer, I can only imagine how well they must treat their paying customers. I do not think you can go wrong with this auto shop! read more

He was all booked up, but still got my transmission issue, which happened to be my alternator (even though they were all transmission codes), resolved. I just had transmission service on my 95 Camry. I was also interested to find out if it had any problems. They thoroughly checked it out and test drove it, and were able to tell me that everything worked well. I just felt that these guys were really honest and easy to talk to, not like some repair shops that talk to you like you are an idiot. I'm going to consider having them do other repair work too. Yes! "Old school", knowledgeable, honest mechanics! We'd taken our truck to a dealership for service that included changing fluids. Had to take it back because the transmission was bucking. Two hours later they told us we needed a new transmission. Ouch! Fortunately, we decided to shop around and we took it to Ed's for an estimate. It took Chuck only 20 minutes to figure out that we were two quarts low on transmission fluid. Problem solved, and without having to replace the transmission! read more

I contacted this shop regarding the 100,000 mile transmission service, replace the filter an change the gasket and fluid on a classic car. I needed to make an appointment for six weeks in the future. On the appointed day and prior to the sheduled time I gave the car to Ed's for the job. After 4hrs I claimed my car and payed $200+ for the service in cash. I discovered about a month later that the hood latch release was broken with the connecting piece missing. The last time I opened the hood was about two days prior to Ed's service and it worked perfectly. I also had occasion to view under the car an noted the transmission gasket was not a new one and the pan had not been unbolted, so the filter could not have been changed. The people at Ed's had to know they broke the hood latch, however made no mention of it. If they didn't break the latch one would think they would report it to me for further repair business. So, the service consisted of sucking the fluid out and replacing it, maybe took all of 30min. Although we discussed the service and agreed they were being paid to remove the fluid, change out the filter and change the gasket then refill with fluid. I would say Ed's transmission service sucks. read more

My experience with Chuck the owner of Eds Transmission was horrible and worse than even 1 star rating. He quoted me 1600 for a transmission over the phone when the other transmission place down the street quoted me 1300 over the phone. I went with Eds because Chuck promised a fantastic job and he promised to give me all the parts "no problem". When Chuck initially took it in He took it apart, called me and confirmed the price over the phone and said its just a clutch replacement. I went down in person and looked at the vehicle up on the truck all taken apart. Chuck is a real fast talker said it was really simple no problem. I really regret my decision. I get a call during the week from Chuck, puting it back together and He didn't even know what oil to use, he was asking Me! He will look into it if i didn't know. He didn't want to use ATF because it felt a lot thinner viscosity than what was in there. That was a red flag. 1 week later He called Me and said the truck was all done ready to go home but don't expect it to operate the same as the old clutch. He tried to give me back my truck with the clutch not evenly engaging, it was painfully obvious because it was banging and rattling in park and wouldn't go into 1st or reverse evenly without a grind and the clutch pedal now went all the way to the floor. Red flag number 2. I am not a mental midget Chuck. No problems like these when I arrived 1 week earlier at all The only problem I had was a little slipping in third but zero noise or problems otherwise, a little slipping is a sign of a new clutch. I said I am not excepting the vehicle and He needed to fix it properly. He said He didn't know what was wrong or how to fix it, he would have to take it all apart again and He really hemmed and hawed to try to get me to take it. He wanted me to pay for it drive it and see if the noises went away but the pedal would stay like that because its a different clutch. I didn't go into the office and just handed Him back the keys and said He needed to make sure the work was done right or I would just drive it to another shop down the street and have them do it, He decided to keep it try and do it right. 1 week later I get called in and said it is all done and works great all issues are fixed, he bought a new clutch and its perfect now. He would not let me get in and turn on the vehicle and check it out. Red Flag number 3. I went to go pay for the vehicle to get it back and the invoice was over $3500 dollars for a new clutch! I said wow You have got to be kidding. Chuck started fast talking. I said I will come back tomorrow after I check this invoice out and he would not give me a copy so i took a picture with my phone before He snatched it away. Red Flag number 4. I called on the parts and he marked most parts up 400%. I think He was trying to compensate for buying a new clutch and I told Him so. He would not allow me to pick up my vehicle the next day Friday He said he was not working. Monday i went in and told Him His cost was unreasonable and illegal. He cant charge more than 10% more of the cost and its illegal to not provide a written estimate and give it to the client comes into the shop face to face. If he doesn't follow those rules Hi is illegally holding the vehicle and liable to 10x the cost of repairs. He said He wants "His" money. He would not release the vehicle or let me test drive it until paid by cash even though He agreed originally to be paid by visa card. I had to bring a police officer over to the shop to get Chuck to take my credit card and release my truck. Guess what 2 blocks down the street the clutch was vibrating and banging. When means the clutch is not evenly engaging the flywheel. I drove it to a shop to pull it apart and do the job properly. They couldn't believe the invoice initially and Since this just happened today I will post again investigation results. This is the worst shop experience. I advise to steer clear- don't go in for any reason- chuck i feel your a greedy fast talker and entirely incompetent on my clutch- 4/27/20, see you in court. read more

Went there for routine maintenance last week that was a few months late on my 2008 Ford Fusion. I had to make an appointment three weeks out, but it was absolutely worth it. They were under their estimate (which was comparable to the dealership's rate), had me in and out in under 2 hours, and treated me like royalty while I was waiting.
