Edoardo was my favorite gelato place in Florence when I studied abroad years ago, and the quality hasn't changed a bit. By far the most decadent, flavorful pistachio gelato I've ever had in my life. Don't be fooled by its touristy location; Edoardo is worth at least a daily visit. Honey and lavender, dark chocolate, cinnamon, and hazelnut were amongst the other flavors we loved. Edoardo states that as "il gelato biologico", their gelato is free from GMO's, artificial coloring, additives, preservatives and adjuvants. They also comply with EU organic farming regulations, which allows them to display the EU's equivalent to "certified organic" on their product. Their chickens that lay the eggs live cage-free and the dairy milk come from cows that graze in pastures. Side note: Gelato passes the test because of their dedication to the craft and they store their gelato inside tins. Any serious gelateria would do their best to serve their gelato in excellent condition. As a more practical concern Edoardo is located right across from the Duomo's apse. On a nice day it is a very photogenic spot to pose with your gelato. Should you climb the dome or campanile it's a great way to reward yourself after walking all those steps! I went here for the first time about a month ago. LOCATION: It's literally right by the Duomo, so that's pretty cool. 4/5 ATMOSPHERE: It's very small and cramped. There's no seating inside, so you've just gotta take what you get and go. But that's okay -- you can just sit on the curb outside or stand, and take in the view of the Duomo. 3/5 SELECTION: It's a gelato shop, so they have gelato and I think a few other desserts. I like that they have some labeled vegan options, but I wish their cones were vegan, or they had vegan cones as well. 3/5 WHAT I GOT: I got the vegan chocolate flavor in a cone. It's not on the main board, but there was another written sign inside, that listed a certain chocolate flavor as vegan, so I asked to make sure, and they said it was vegan, so I got that. Walking towards Il Duomo in the Piazza del Duomo, I was distracted by the heavenly smell of waffle cones. Looked up and saw a nondescript business with "Gelato Biologico Organic" written on on brown paper and taped on to the front window. Intrigued, I went in and discovered gelato that made me do a happy dance, it is so good. Edoardo just opened 3 days earlier (which is why their signage was on brown paper). The gelato is made fresh upstairs, resulting in fresh and clean flavors. I kept returning to try new flavors and re-returning to get my favorites which were Cinnamon (paired with Dark Chocolate) and Pistachio (Lovely roasted flavor). Yes, I was getting 3 cones a day! Seriously, I was eating a lot of gelato in Italy (and frequent Via Gelato, a wonderful gelato truck in Hawaii) and I know gelato. THIS gelato just made me dance with joy. They also make the waffle cones on site. Edoardo's makes their waffle cones thinner than usual, which I really liked! The cone was light and airy, a good contrast to the rich flavors of the gelato. Prices are really reasonable, too! Loved the service as well. Oh. And if they ask if you want whipped cream on top, say yes! They have a machine that whips the cream and dollops it on top of the gelato. It's not overly sweet and is a perfect complement to the gelato! Edoardo was the last gelateria I had while my study abroad program was coming to an end. I still dream about their fresh made waffle cone. It was always perfectly crispy, warm, and had the right amount of sweetness. And obviously only the best gelato is worthy to be on top of this thin and perfectly crisp waffle cone; their gelato is all organic but still made to perfection. They have an assortment of flavors, and this was one of the only gelateria where pistachio was not the only flavor I got. Every single flavor I've tried was amazing; their blueberry and peach or pistachio con coconut had to be my favorite combination. Actually, any flavor combination is great. What's also unique about this location was that they had alcoholic flavored gelato; I was not daring enough to really get a whole scoop of those but I did try a bite of my friends! My verdict? It was pretty good!! The workers there always had a smile on their face, and trust me, it's not easy while your gelateria is right next to the busiest location in Firenze. The only thing that made me not come to this location every day was that their gelato is 3 euros. But, you're paying 3 euros for a taste of heaven, and they definitely don't skimp on the gelato. You get to pick 2 flavor combinations and they really stuff it in the cone for you. I would walk by this gelateria every day when walking to and from school and I always thought this location would be a hype since it is right next to the Duomo... but so many of my friends recommended it that I had to give it a try. Edoardo tops many of the gelaterias in Florence IMO, not only because of their organic gelato but also their homemade cones and unique alcoholic flavors. I'm really surprised this gelateria is off the side of the Duomo, because there's a reputation of generic, piled-high gelaterias in that area. I was recommended to come here by my study abroad roommate, so I finally made the chance to visit. I had a taste of their moscato flavor which was really interesting. I probably wouldn't get it myself because i'm not into moscato being in a dessert form, but if you are feeling adventurous, go for it! They also have a red wine flavor, mint chocolate, plain chocolate, cinnamon, cream, blueberry, and other basic flavors. I got their blueberry and crema gelato; SO yummy. Both were not too sweet and just the right amount of flavor. You definitely have to get a cone here because they're known for their fresh handmade cones. We ordered a cup with part honey lavender & part fig from a highly uninterested gentleman and stepped outside to enjoy. The honey lavender flavor was quite delicious - delicate and well balanced, for sure. The fig flavor was a bit overwhelming to me, but I think that's just a personal taste thing. Edoardo is located in a prime tourist location, so this place is poppin'! Right across from the Cupola del Brunelleschi, there is a continuous line out the door at all times. This was my first gelato spot in Europe, and it was a doozy. The line was out the door, but because I am so indecisive, it gave me plenty of time to examine the list of flavors. I ended up ordering the bicerin (chocolate coffee milk) gelato with the crema (cream) with some of the hand whipped panna (whipped cream) which came out of a huge metal keg of some sort. I'm not prone to "best" anything). For my fellow non dairy warriors, in my experience soy gelato typically is way too sweet and you always get that not-so- authentic soybean aftertaste. I believe Edoardo uses an almond base, so you don't get that beany flavor. It's so rich and creamy, that my eyes might have rolled back in my head with pleasure. Don't expect a ton of vegan variety (all the times I went -different years- it was chocolate and almond and perhaps one other flavor). The chocolate and almond combined is pure bliss! The intense flavors of the fruit gelatos are a result of using the skins and rinds in the gelato. It's hard to miss Edoardo if you are near the Duomo. The fragrant and intoxicating scent of freshly made waffle cones fill the street as you approach the store. Not only was this the best gelato I had in Florence, but these were also the best waffle cones I had in Florence. I like to break the rules and pair my fruit based gelatos with cream gelatos for a "creamsicle" effect. The Crema and Limone are my favorites to pair with each other. Pay for your order when you approach the counter. A two scoop "piccolo" waffle cone costs 3.5 euros. Hand the receipt to the employee scooping the gelato and select your flavors. Once you have selected your gelato enjoy your frozen treat in the Duomo Piazza. GELATO 101: While I agree, it is hard to find a "bad gelato" there are multiple gelato shops that make their gelatos from a powdered mix. The mixes usually contain artificial flavors and colors and can easily be detected by their bright colors and out of season flavors. Avoid the gelato shops that pile up their gelato in huge, decorative piles. While the decorative mounds do appear pretty in the showcase it is not good to pile gelato in large mounds because it has to be kept at a colder temperature than recommended. Everyone has their favourite gelato places in Florence but my wife favours more on stores with the tub kind of gelato instead of the metal containers. This is one sign of quality she said. With Grom, this seems to be true. Edoardo uses the metal containers though but its still... greeeaaat! (Grom is my favourite though imho). Edoardo serves very high quality ice cream, not as heavy flavoured or dense as Grom, but the flavours do come through perfectly in a cold cold night in Florence. The pistaccio flavours has a saltiness to it, that makes it really enjoyable for a gelato!! The chocolate flavours were great, silky smooth and very gentle in carassing my tongue, unlike a heavy passionate affair with Grom's chocolate. I'm making a contrast here, a juxtaposition.
