We need more additions like this along Gottingen St. Thanks to Edna, there's a good spread of fine establishment bringing life back to this place. And on the plus side, Edna is a modern type of fine dining that has a class of its own. I went there with my spouse last night and ordered the oysters (they served 2 kinds, one from PEI and the other from Black Point, NS). At $2 a pop, it was worth it. Fresh and succulent. Also goes well with the shot of Bloody Mary we ordered. As for our appetizer, we had the crispy pork belly. Two thumbs up for the chef - the dish was prepared well. Nicely cook and the kale sides was equally delicious. As for the main course we had the NS Butcher's Cut which we ordered to be serve medium cook. I think the chef think a good job with that too but our only complain was that it went with fries which kind of brought the "fine-dining" experience a notch down. Would have been better to serve it with some more interesting and more refine side apart from fries. All in all, I'd say Edna is a great place to go for a unique fine dining experience here in Hali and if you're like me - looking for good oysters, then consider this place. read more

Where is that 6th star when you really need it, because if it existed EDNA would be earning it top to bottom. We took a leisurely walk from our hotel in search of brunch, and brunch we did find. Thank goodness for this strong recommendation from a bartender a few nights earlier who couldn't say enough good things about this place (as opposed to the hotel concierge who recommended much weaker options - really its your job to be in the know, so why don't you?) I digress, this is all about EDNA. Beautiful, delicious, thoughtful EDNA. Why thoughtful, well, they know they're popular and they get busy, but instead of making you wait in line, eyeing others eating their food like my Frenchie watches me eat pretty much anything, they've got coffee waiting for you to make the lineup - not so bad. It's not free and gets added to your bill but when you're tired and hungry (maybe hungover) sometimes all you want is a cup of coffee and at EDNA - poof, there it is. Beautiful? Well if you haven't been it's basically the rustic industrial, cottage-y design of my dreams. Reclaimed wood, vintage accessories and decor, palate fixtures, mix-N-match place settings. All so eclectic but come together in a way that had me wishing I could Pinterest real life and add this place to me "future home project ideas" board. Lastly, delicious, well look at my pictures and tell me it's not love at first sight. I was stuck on what to have for like 10 seconds until the server told me about the days special which was basically steak and eggs and surf and turf having a naughty baby for me to eat. Everything I wanted was on one plate - a 6oz PEI blue dot ribeye, lobster, two poached eggs, bearnaise sauce, crispy onions, greens + potatoes. Stick a fork in my cuz I was done baby. My fiancee had classic bacon and eggs benny which she loved. Greed won out and we also shared one of their flufftastic ricotta pancakes. It's 11:55pm a couple of weeks later, I'm recounting my experience as I write this now sitting at home in Toronto, I'm salivating and wishing I could be sitting in EDNA with a turquoise coffee mug right now. Just a few blocks from where other restaurants cater to tourists, this wonderful spot is making beautifully presented yet simple food that is just packed full of deliciousness. Starting with cocktails, the cucumber gimlet was a big hit, so quenching and delightfully crisp, the same could be said of the summer negroni (made with lemon and honey syrup on top of the usual gin and Campari). So very good! The oysters were of course divine, briny and tender! Served with a nice mignonette and beautiful pile of freshly grated horseradish (it really was a nice touch and added a bit of bite). We followed this up with a super beefy blue dot carpaccio. The blue dot label carries a high reputation with the locals and my experience found it to be well deserved. The meat had a deeper color and flavor than at home, yet remained melt in your mouth tender. Happy,happy! For our mains I had the scallops served with both a pea and mint purée, and pork jus, plus lardons! Wow, so rich creamy fresh! I loved the scallops and the pork fat,, but also the vegetables which were so seasonably fresh that I danced with joy ( on the inside) . My wife had the salmon, which when eaten with the beet latke that it was served on was also pure joy. So full, but we managed to share a strawberry shortcake served with a mascarpone cream for dessert. Thankfully the walk back was mostly downhill. read more

Hipstery-casual setting with pretty foods to match. Had the tomato-based gazpacho, a pasta with mint, peas, pea shoots and pinenuts, plus a pork belly appetizer with a Scotch egg. I thought the gazpacho was OK, but not as tomato-y as I would've liked. The pasta struck a nice balance between filling but not rich - a light pasta if there's such a thing. Simple ingredients but each ingredient was fresh, so I felt the flavours were pronounced. The pork belly, being the richest of our dish trio, was K's favourite and he really enjoyed the sauce on it too. I thought the ingredients were fresh, well paired, and plated nicely. Wish we could've stayed longer to try more plates, but we were in a rush to catch our flight. We'll remember to come back to Edna again next time. read more

My husband, a friend and I decided to stop in for brunch today. The place was packed and we were told it was a 20 minute wait. The servers were very kind and friendly, asked if we wanted drinks and handed us menus while we were waiting. I admit, we started to get a little impatient, more so towards customers who you could clearly see were done and not leaving, than towards the restaurant itself. I took the time to admire the charm of the place. Simple, yet cozy decor. Once seated, we were promptly served and all knew what we wanted as the brunch menu doesn't have too much to offer vegans but we were excited and happy to all order the vegan french toast. The food arrived quickly and was pleasant on the eyes. Taking the first bite I was in heaven. Delicious homemade bread in a banana and coconut batter, laid on a bed of cashew cream, topped with cranberry and apple compote. The flavours just burst in your mouth. Not sickeningly sweet for the morning which was wonderful. The apple was delectable, the whole meal was. Truly the best french toast I've ever eaten. All 3 of us loved it. It was worth the wait. And the price was great too! The reviews of this place didn't let us down. I was in Halifax a few weeks ago and was looking for somewhere to take my friend who was hosting us. We decided on Edna after hearing great things and reading some reviews here. We ordered some oysters for the table which were super fresh and tasty. I started with the Tuna Tartare special which was so fresh and delicious. I followed this with the Scallops which were also incredible. We had a bottle of sparkling, apps, mains, oysters, dessert and after dinner cocktails which came to about $400 for the 4 of us with tax and tip. Very reasonable when comparing to Toronto prices. One of the best meals I've had and left very comfortably (not stuffed, just the right amount of food). Definitely worth a visit. read more

Loved EDNA. It was the highlight of Nova Scotia for us. We recently did a quick road trip around the coast a little early in the season I admit so not everything was open. But this place was by far the stand out in the province for us. Super friendly a little quirky, good beer and wine list a little expensive though, cocktails were reasonable, my starch components were cold but they quickly Fixed that. Great medium cook on the pork. Mussel bowl was great. All in all a perfect meal for our last night in NS. read more

My friend and I ate out a lot during our time in Halifax, but I thought Edna was by far the best food we had. Outstanding were the mushroom tart and the tuna. The tart was creamy with melty goat cheese and a really tasty blend of mushroom. The crust was flaky and buttery. I normally don't enjoy savory tarts, but this one was incredible. The tuna was some of the best I've had and I almost always get tuna if it's on the menu. It was very lightly seared and flavored perfectly. The fish was also the perfect texture and no fishiness of course. The place had a nice atmosphere without being super fancy and the service was really good. Our waitress was really sweet and attentive. The drinks weren't that great, but we were fine with that since that's not really what we were there more. Prices were pretty reasonable too. Excellent local, fresh ingredients prepared with love. I had the pan seared scallops and my wife had the swordfish. Both were perfectly prepared with a medley of heritage vegetables. The service was excellent, available, helpful while not intrusive. The setting is modern hip but not hectic. Upon request, the waitress recommended a wine paring. It was excellent and noticeably the most reasonably priced. All in all,a great dinner and experience. I suggest you get there early. They do not take reservations and are very popular. Great breakfast - we arrived just before they closed for the afternoon, but wonderful service and everything was delicious. My son got the vegan french toast, which he loved (although not a vegan). Harvest eggs were very creatively served with leeks and parsnip and a hint of hot sauce. Sampled my sister in law's gravlax, which were the best I have ever tasted. Highly recommended. read more

After seeing the pics of lobster and steak eggs benny on Yelp I really wanted to get that, but sadly when we got there it wasn't on the menu any more. The staff explained that the price of lobster is so high that they can't offer it unless lobster is in season. I was a bit disappointed but it's understandable. Had the steak & eggs Benedict anyway (sans lobster) and it was still really good. Had a risotto pancake on the side and it was amazing! Eggs were cooked perfectly, presentation was lovely. This is one of my favorite spots in Canada to eat it, the food is always top shelf. Ate here last year when I was in Halifax and I had to come back this year for more. Ordered the carrot & coconut soup which rocked me world, and then had the pork chop which was flipping amazing! The chop was perfectly cooked and the accompanying vegetables & garnishes were on point. This meal changed the whole outlook of my day, it was just incredible. Edna takes elements of the sadly missed Jane's on the Common's great food, ambience and service and adds a dose of downtown cool, new and interesting taste influences and ingredients in sophisticated interpretations of classic dishes, and the conviviality of a beautiful bar. The comparisons to Jane's will abound, no doubt, because Edna was opened by Jane's daughter (does this make Edna Jane's granddaughter?) and Jane's next door moved from Robie Street to, well, next door. But this certainly isn't a reincarnation. Edna is an entirely new restaurant with its own identity, style and focus. While we look forward to brunch starting soon (cough, cough), Edna seems to be at its best at night for now. The beautiful space is long and narrow and has windows at the front and corner. The tables in this section have natural light before the sun goes down, but the rear section, bar and communal table rely more on creative, subdued lighting emanating from the walls and ceiling, seemingly everywhere but the floor. After dark, "some would even say it glows". A night I stopped in with a friend who wanted to look at the menu there were a few people contentedly dining solo at the bar, in the midst of a full and lively room. Solo diners aren't made to feel particularly welcome in most restaurants. Here, at the bar, they can have the best seats in the house. Our group of five shared oysters and salad for appetizers. The salad featured beautiful heirloom tomatoes and roasted red pepper and greens. The oysters were fresh, slippery and tasted like the ocean. The simple mignonette of shallot and vinegar was the perfect accompaniment. My main was the short rib served with a vegetable rice paper wrap and shoestring root veg. The meat was outstanding: tender, moist, perfectly cooked. The veggie wrap was good and the Asian flavours tied the plate together nicely. I recommend this dish! The desserts were tasty but I think there could be room for improvement. The flourless chocolate cake (in my mind hard to mess up) seemed as though it had just come out of a cold fridge. It would have been softer and more flavourful closer to room temperature. The rhubarb fared better. There is a nice selection of wines and classic cocktails that I look forward to exploring now that this is my neighbourhood restaurant. The prices are very reasonable (on par or a bit less than mains - not pasta/burgers/pizza - at comparable downtown restaurants). On the night I was there the crowd was mixed, friendly and so happy to welcome Edna to the city. read more

This was the highlight of our trip to Halifax. The food all weekend has been great but this place took the cake. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was busy so we ate at the bar and the bartendress was so helpful and friendly. She was like our private food and drink guide. We didn't get her name but she had longer curly hair and glasses(all the staff were incredibly friendly). We started with the burrata. Would have licked the plate if we were at home. The Cornish hen was next--perfectly cooked rich flavors, paired nicely with a potato Latka and fried egg. Ended with their port ne the hazelnut torte, which was enormous and soooo good. We couldn't finish it. Portions are nice, we split everything and we're pretty full by the end of it all. Hope this place is around forever. read more

Oh Edna, How i love thee, let me count the ways. What a gem in the ever expanding deliciousness that is the food scene in North End Halifax. I've been here on several occasions now and boy do they ever do a great job of keeping me coming back over and over. My very first time was last summer where I was taken for birthday wine and oysters (my first time with those). The wine was sublime, the oysters were briny deliciousness but it was the sea bass with compressed watermelon and some sort of coconut foam that made me swoon. A very hungover Sunday brought me in for brunch and did they ever cure whatever ailed me that morning. Wish I'd had more room in my belly to try everything but the eggs benny were just what I needed. Attentive service from the lovely staff who kept my water filled and coffee coming made it very hard to leave but there was an epic nap to be had after all that goodness. And finally, came my chance to have a proper dinner there which I'd been dying to do but wanted there to be the right time for it. The opportunity came, after I had dropped many not so subtle hints on my love for Edna, on a date. The place was hopping on a beautiful Sunday evening and I hadn't eaten all that much, anticipating the amazing meal I was going to enjoy. And they did not disappoint. Oysters again for me (with pineapple jalapeno shallot mignonette and horse radish), a lovely hot and sour soup, a shared plate of burrata (Italian buffalo mozzarella) which was served with charred scallion pesto and tomato relish on grilled sourdough. The mains were Southern fried Cornish hen with mash and gravy, which when combined with my main of corn fritters with chipotle mascarpone and avocado black bean salsa meant there was silence, broken occasionally by yummy noises. Dessert of flourless chocolate cake was taken to go but was just as relished on the couch later that evening with more of the aforementioned sounds of culinary bliss. The service is impeccable, the atmosphere is lovely, the food is divine, with a menu that changes a little bit everyday to keep us interested. New Restaurant?! I love new restaurants!! Saturday of their first week in business, boyfriend and I make the trek up the hill to visit the new EDNA and I have to say, we rather enjoyed it. It was a bit pricey but I'd say it was worth it. We skipped the appetizer for wine (their wine and beer list is nice and local - I like that) and for mains I had the hen and he had a seafood soup of some kind and he LOVED it. Even I, who does not eat seafood, tried a bit of a scallop and didn't want to spit it back up.... well done Edna, well done. The hen dish looked small but surprisingly filling - it could have been the lovely bed of lentils it comes with, the lentils were my favourite part. Honestly though, I think a similar dish at another restaurant that we frequently visit has won my heart over and I was a little "meh" overall about my dish. I understand the concept of the big communal table but since boyfriend and I had just spent the day running in the Bluenose Marathon, neither of us were in a share a table with strangers mood so we sat at one of their 2 person tables in the front. This was really nice until another pair came in and was seated next to us... normally you have space but here you don't. We could hear everything the people next to us were saying as they were about a meter away and I didn't feel comfortable talking about a whole lot simply because I knew that everything I was saying was being said to the people next to us well. Once again, I understand their concept but we chose not to sit at the communal table for a reason. Anyways, overall Edna is a great spot for a nice meal and some good locally based drinks. They have tonnes of gluten-free options which is great for my boyfriend's mother who will be visiting us next month. However, like every new restaurant there is room for expansion (both in regards to the distance between tables and their menu which I'm sure will be switched up every so often). If you do happen to go and enjoy seafood, try the seafood soup (stew?). read more

Oh EDNA. I feel ridiculously privileged to have you in my city. You are a beautiful space that combines all the glory of Etsy with a west coast speakeasy and are a perfect addition to your trendy neighbourhood. Let's hang out all the time, yes? Yes. Note: it's just a 60-seater so it's pretty wee. You might have to wait for a table and you definitely don't want to show up with your full entourage unless you happen to score the big communal table. Which would be fine by me given that I don't have the mental fortitude to avoid Communal Table Anxiety Disorder. While I didn't look too much for wines or beers, the cocktail list was small but mighty and the French 75 I ordered was flawless. I didn't ask whether it was an ingredient or if their ratios just faked the flavour perfectly, but I could have sworn it tasted like a spiked Nova 7. Which obviously I would be all for. The menu changes a bit from day to day which worked out nicely for me. Instead of the wild mushroom risotto I had noticed in my 'research,' I lucked into a vegetarian risotto combining a number of rich, wonderful things. This one in particular had artichokes, asparagus, manchego cheese, and a tomato oil. It was creamy, flavourful, and lovely, and I'd order it again in a heartbeat. At first look, it felt a bit spendy at $18, but I was full, satisfied, and completely convinced of the value by the last bite. Now, I mentioned being full and satisfied, but of course I ordered dessert too. Because why not eat until you're in pain? Well actually, it didn't quite play out like that because their dessert portions are pretty wee. My insanely good butterscotch pudding with salted caramel syrup was as much of a revelation as you can fit into a single-portion baby food jar. It was the perfect amount to sate my sweet tooth without going overboard, but at $8 and an unbecoming cost-per-bite ratio, it'll be more of a once-every-couple-of-visits sort of thing. read more

Have been to Edna several times and usually charmed by the excellent food and service. Unfortunately last evening, not a great. While the food was excellent, service was sadly lacking. Within minutes of our food arriving, our server retired to the bar to enjoy drinks with a friend - we assumed it was the end of her shift, however maybe next time as a courtesy to your customers, let us know that you are calling it a night and that someone else will be taking over. With the loss of our server, it appeared that the bartender silently assumed our service. Or non-service service. And the bartender's rookie move of 'dumping' the remaining bottle of wine into our already-full glasses in an effort to rush us out the door left us puzzled as we thought Edna was open until 11pm. If you want to enjoy this excellent food, make sure you get the first seating as clearly the staff get fatigued before the end of the night and you may find yourself getting rushed out the door well before 11pm. Should you find yourself getting ushered out the door prematurely, just head over to Field Guide (right across the street) where you will be well looked after by an incredibly talented and professional team. read more

I also had the pleasure of tasting two salads, because one was accidentally brought to me and I was allowed to keep it. Both were outstanding, and I particularly recommend the lobster salad. I adore this place for brunch. It's too bad they only offer it on the weekends. I've had almost everything on their brunch menu - my favourite being the Lobster Florentine. Although you can't really make a bad choice here, considering everything is delish. Their duck fat smashed potatoes are a must have, so if your dish doesn't come with a side of that, make sure to order some! Take a gander at their special as well. I've had their salted cod cakes and their pulled pork sandwich which could both be menu staples. I love me some alcohol but I'm not really one for them in the morning. This was my first trip to Edna after hearing much raved reviews. The first point I have to ask and it should never have to be asked ever is if the menu price says $8 Peach Bellini then why does my bill say $9 for it? Please if you read this owner of Edna and I know you owners read yelp because I get owners contacting me from time to time about my yelping. Get it right please. You put your prices up at the check out then reflect that on the menu. The decor is pleasing to the north end hipsters and south end yuppies alike. There are plenty of hangers near where you sit and under the bar to hang your purse. The atmosphere is loud and kept getting louder as the place got more and more busy so I found with my wife I had to keep trying to over talk everyone around me. It was kind of like being at work on some days LOL. The place had a huge buzz and was full of young 20 something's. The food was good. I had the vegan french toast coconut milk and banana were used to dip the bread and it was lightly fried in oil topped with coulis and house made granola. My wife had a gravlax eggs benny. Overall this was good and nicely presented but I did try it and I found the hollandaise was overpowered with lemon juice. IT took away too much from the gravlax. If I were eating this dish I would have to try my best to move the gravlax away and enjoy it on its own. Service was great. The server made sure we always had water. In terms of would I return not planning. I find there is enough choice of these types of places and I am not loyal to any of them. If one of them used ingredients I had not seen before like black truffles or something new to Halfax then they would get my attention held for a little bit longer. PS: Almost forget. The server or runner as it is called sometimes who is running plates out to tables needs more time to learn her job. Our food was first delivered to the wrong end of the bar then back to the kitchen where our server took over and brought it to us. The table next to us she screwed that one up aswell and brought them one plate of food. Our server again had to strighten it out and do the job herself. I was a HUGE fan of Jane's - and was heartbroken when they closed. So you can imagine my excitement when Edna opened up in my neighbourhood. The décor is simple and clean - and the environment is really warm and friendly. Everyone sits kind of close to one another and there's so much chatter ... it's kind of like being at a big dinner party. I had the oysters to start, followed by the bouillabaisse. The oysters were fresh and the accoutrements were yummy (I never thought I'd use that word in life, but here I am!). The bouillabaisse had big pieces of seafood and was quite filling. My only complaint is that it was saltier than I prefer. I was gulping down water by the end. Overall, I really liked Edna's and absolutely plan on going back. I know some reviewers have remarked on the price. It's definitely a bit pricier (about $18-$24 for a main course), but as a treat, it's worth it. Really amazing restaurant in a slightly dodgy part of town. Efficiently service and lovely space. Both ordered scallops and they were perfectly cooked (ie nicely medium rare in the middle) served with a lovely corn hash. Will be back. read more

I love this place. Everything is impeccable and there is always a new menu every couple of weeks. The caesar with the oyster is my favourite. Go here. Also great servers too! I've also been for brunch too and I'm not a big fan of line-ups but the food is worth it if you're willing to line up. read more
