Gnocchi
Daniel B.

Dined on 11/1 while spending the weekend in downtown Halifax. Sat by myself at the bar on a busy Friday night and loved the shotgun style layout and lighting inside. Ordered a great cocktail (Summer Air) from a bartender recommendation, and got the Gnocchi (with butternut bisque, kale, grilled zucchini, walnut honey, tallegio, and sage oil) as my entree dish. It was just incredible all around. Would definitely recommend making plans in advance to stop by!

I have mixed feelings about our dinner at Edna. The service was lovely, they had great ambiance for a romantic dinner and the whole table loved their food choices. I had the grilled squid which may have been the only miss on the menu. The individual components of the dish was very overpowering and the squid got lost in the flavor shuffle. I had a bite of the rainbow trout with parsley and kalamata olive salad, carrot and radish which was much much better. Great place, great service, great food but skip the grilled squid. Also, the neighborhood around this restaurant gets rough at night so I would not recommend going for a walk after dinner.

We waited too long to make a Saturday night reservation so the latest we could get was 5:30 but I'm glad we took that very early time. There was only 1 table taken when we arrived but it slowly started to fill up in the next hour or so. Even when more customers arrived it was still easy to have a conversation with the people at our table without shouting. Our server, Shaw, could not have been nicer throughout the night, knowledgeably answering questions ranging from the type of oysters being served tonight to the ingredients in some of the dishes, to restaurants in a completely different city we will be traveling to. But on to the food! There were 4 of us and everyone throughly enjoyed their meals. The Merigomish & the Foxley River Oysters were delicious as were the Baked Clams. The Beet Salad was also a hit. The Scallops with Arancini and the Grilled Squid with Pickled Fennel were both amazing, as was the Halibut Cheek, which was perfectly cooked. A shared Toffee Cake with Black Sesame Seed ice cream completed the meal. Not inexpensive but well worth the tastes and experience.

Best meal I've had in a year!! The food is beyond exceptional - creative, gorgeous, thoughtful... master chef prepared! The oysters had fresh shaved horseradish, a perfect mignonette and even a house made strawberry chili sauce to accompany them. Blew me away! The scallops and everything that accompanied them were amazing. Their beet salad is the most memorable Salad you'll ever have - rye crumble, Local cheese, fantastic dressing! Everything made in house and carefully executed. A MUST if you are in Halifax!!

Probably one of the best gnocchi I've ever had! Fatalistic foods and friendly service. I'd love to revisit it soon :)

Special: duck breast and eggs + salmon gravlax side

An October Saturday: We waited for about 20mins for a table. We were seated at 12:14pm. Customer service: specials were announced. Water was immediately served. We ordered an oyster Ceasar and it arrived within 5 mins. Servers were attentive and proactively gave us sharing plates without asking. Kitchen service: we ordered the special (Duck Breast and Eggs) + Salmon gravlax side, and the special scone. We were asked if they need to be served at the same time and we couldn't care less. The scone arrived within 8 mins of ordering; while the special came within 15mins. Oyster Ceasar ($11): 4/5 the oyster is super fresh. The Ceasar tasted a bit less flavors than other Ceasars we have come to drink and love. Chocolate and Strawberry scone ($8): 5/5 the warm scone is to tie for. Compare to conventional scones this one is just right on the heaviness factor. The chunks of Strawberry and chocolate are not overwhelming and didn't affect the consistency of the scone. The accompanying sauce and flavored cream adds to the already tasty scone. Duck Breast and Eggs ($16): 4/5 comes with 2 sunny side eggs, roasted squash, potato Brussels with caramelized onions. The duck breast unfortunately was overdone and was too chewy. The squash potato was nice combo and not over-fried. The eggs are done right and fried nicely. Salmon gravlax side ($5): 4/5 never had gravlax before. It reminded us of salmon lox, but the saltier version. Good to try. Overall: not too shabby at all! We were fully stuffed with the portions. Good selection of food and drinks with some creative pairings.

If you're celiac/gluten free, ask! They were able to make adjustments on just about everything on the menu. Food was incredible and the ambiance is excellent.

Spending the last day in Halifax right, with breakfast at Edna Resturant. I ordered the scone and it was SOOO GOOD!! Flaky and borderline crispy on the outside, soft and tender on the inside. YES I'm still talking about the scone!! Paired with their in-house jam and MAPLE BUTTER!! I wanted to buy a jar and take home.

Nice seat at the bar. Delicious dinner.

The jalapeño cornbread was another standout....moist, flavourful, and with just the right amount of kick. The fish and chips were excellent, while the tater tot-chos were pure comfort food, loaded with melted cheddar, pico de gallo, and sour cream. Of course, we needed some veggies for balance, so the kale and quinoa salad totally counts! The perfect pairing throughout was the Mango Dragonfruit Sour. Super refreshing and fruity, with enough acidity to cut through all the richness of the meal. Great happy hour selection, lots of variety, and a fun spot to settle in for a feast. Definitely a place worth checking out when you're in Halifax!

Made sure we were ok every time he was in the vicinity. I ordered the mushroom Benedict with the hollandaise on the side. It was great with the locally made truffle cream cheese. I did have to ask for a steak knife to be able to cut through the bread. It was a well done piece of pizza dough. Tasty but tough to get through. Came with tater tots and a donair sauce to dip them in. My husband ordered the stuffed baked potato. He loved it but said next time he will order the side salad on the side and ask for more dressing. I ended the meal with a cool glass of rose. We will definitely be back.

ving the Best for Last at Bicycle Thief…read more We saved Bicycle Thief for last, and it ended up being one of the best meals of our Halifax trip. We started with the flash-fried calamari, a great opener served with their sun-dried tomato pesto aioli. But little did I know the standout lobster dish of the trip was hiding in the appetizer section. Their lobster and corn chowder was incredible. Seriously, so, so good. Potatoes, Vidalia onions, and double-smoked bacon added great contrast to the sweet lobster. And you know it's good when you can see that beautiful red lobster oil floating on top. It really showed that they used the lobster shells and all those flavour-packed bits to build the stock. Absolutely delicious. Next came the spaghettini ai frutti di mare, loaded with huge jumbo shrimp, fresh scallops, and mussels in a sun-dried tomato pesto. The seafood was fresh and plentiful. The linguini all'aragosta did not disappoint either. San Marzano tomatoes, cream, and Parmigiano made for a rich and decadent sauce that worked beautifully with the lobster. We also had the crab ravioli, followed by yet another lobster dish, the lobster Thermidor. This was seriously indulgent, with wild mushrooms, Gruyère, and house-made black truffle spaghettini. Rich, savoury, and packed with flavour. After all that decadence, we needed something bright to finish. The crostata al bergamotto was perfect, with a vibrant bergamot citrus curd that cut through the richness and refreshed the palate. Great seafood, incredible pasta, creative flavours, and excellent execution. We definitely saved one of the best for last.

Nut allergy friendly: Their rotating menu has some nuts (almond, hazelnut, salsa macha with peanut)…read morebut the staff had no issue highlighting dishes for me. Quaint on the outside, I almost walked by thinking it was a residential home until I verified on Maps. But, packed with ambiance inside! I got a reservation for 1 two weeks ahead or so for 9PM and was seated promptly on arrival. Spent about 1.5 hours here but most of the dishes came out within 45mins, and I put in an extra order for the cheese and bread. I ordered: 3 oysters (2.5/5): from New Brunswick and served with horseradish, lemon, and a sherry sauce. I had one plain, one with lemon, and one decked out. I think the oysters were very small. The lemon and sherry were the best combo. The horseradish is overpowering to the natural flavor. Honestly I'd skip, this, because you can get very good oysters elsewhere in Halifax. (I learned later in my visit that oysters in the Atlantic have had a very bad season due to disease, so this may just be particularly unlucky timing). Tuna Tartare with Allumettes Frites (5/5): Definitely the highlight of my meal and the only thing I'd order again solo. The shoestring Allumettes Frites were crispy, and the tuna Tartare was excellently balanced. I'd definitely recommend this dish. Raw Scallop, Tomato Water, Green Olive (4/5) - a very unique dish that almost reminds me of elevated sashimi of scallop. It was about six scallops with garnishes and they were very flavorful with the natural scallop richness. I would share it, I got a good sense of the flavor profile with 1-2 pieces personally. Cloud Ten (mezcal, ube pineapple foam, and vermouth) (4.5/5): Genius cocktail. I'm a huge fan of mezcal and the pineapple foam is a great offset to the smokiness. I sipped the foam at first and then let it melt into the mezcal and got totally different flavor profiles. Great job on this one. On recommendation from a fellow solo diner, I got the Grey Owl goat milk cheese to finish my meal, along with a side of bread (+$4). This ended up being my second favorite dish of the night (4.5/5). The cheese was excellent and the bread had an excellent char and chewiness. Shout-out to my awesome waitress Kenzie for her recommendations and hospitality. Excellent service in keeping my water and utensils fresh, and the recommendations for dishes and local things in Halifax. It is decently loud inside with an intimate small plate setting. I don't think I'd go again as a solo because my preference would definitely be to share apps with at least one other person. Overall, a great date setting or for someone who wants an elevated experience of seafood. Service was very friendly and the tuna Tartare and Cloud Ten were standouts.

The servers were nice and recommended a bar we should go to in the area afterwards.
