Went here for bouldering but it is more geared towards belaying. May try that again here at some point buuuuuut probably not. Don't get me wrong. The staff was great, the place was clean, and they had a desig aged belYing section and any belaying array was labeled for the highest you would be allowed to boulder... but it was just lacking in a few areas. For example, the bathroom was small so if more than 1 person needs to change in a bathroom it will be super cramped, and why is there no hand washing area outside of the bathroom? Without one you have to put on your street shoes with your hands covered in chalk to use the bathroom. Also, their gym area is small and their class area is even smaller. I. LOVE. THIS. CLIMBING. GYM. I've climbed here a number of times and I love the routes they have. They have a big bouldering area, some small walls. A few auto belay routes. But the best part is the big walls they have, they even have some crack climbs! I recently went in to buy my first set of gear and was helped by Jayden. She did a wonderful job helping me find shoes that were the PERFECT fit, which is super hard for me to find because I have weirdly shaped feet. She was knowledgeable and super helpful and did not rush me at all, and she was able to keep me in my budget. She definitely deserves a raise. They just expanded the gym to include a weight and strength training area, and they offer palates and yoga, and all of that is included with a membership. If you want the best indoor climbing experience in tacoma, this is the place you want to go. read more

This was my first time at Edgeworks and I really enjoyed it. I've been climbing before so I didn't need to take the climbing 101 class. But my sister and friend took the 101 class and I think they liked it a lot. My only complaint is that the class took preeeetty long (2 hours!). I liked the auto belays a lot - really great if you don't have a climbing partner. The routes are nicely laid out but a lot of them overlap so be careful if you're climbing next to someone. Though I like climbing more... My actual favorite thing was the bouldering section! I think it's so cool how if you climb to the top you can actually climb over and walk on it! Prices here are definitely A LOT cheaper than other climbing gyms I looked at. Plus the people who work here are super nice! Definitely very helpful and awesome. This place is really cool. I ended up signing up for the year pass for my wife and I, and honestly its about a 10 minute drive, so I was definitely concerned I would not make too many trips here. After about 2 weeks of having the pass I have been 3-4 times a week and I am no longer concerned about getting my moneys worth. This place is huge. A decent amount of bouldering, a lot of top roping, and a couple auto belay sites. Plus a decent free weight gym and machine area. Oh and yoga classes!! We have done it all and love it completely. Edgeworks is open with some cool routes and a sprinkle of bouldering, however the culture created by staff members was really disappointing. I would consider myself a beginner/intermediate climber. I've been an indoor and outdoor climber in Utah, Idaho, Oregon and some of Washington over the last few years. The climbing culture has always been really chill, positive, and encouraging everywhere I've been. I was asked to take a test to ensure I could demonstrate my belay/climb skills. While waiting for my turn one staff member interrupted the instructor for assistance at the front desk. Before helping him she quietly said (loud enough for me to hear) that the gentleman was "struggling" and he needed to "fail him." When it was my turn, my boyfriend and I were tested at the same time. The instructor (Gabby), wasn't clear about what she was asking, didn't inquire about our experience or ask how we've been taught in the past. I let go of the rope while she was attending to my boyfriend. At the end she looked at me and said, "hard fail" because I let go of the rope. I was visiting for the weekend from Boise so just planned to go this one time. She said I could climb but couldn't belay (although I've been doing it for some time now), and couldn't retest for 24-hours. It felt like a power struggle, pass/fail vs helpful environment. I'm sharing this information in hopes that perhaps the staff members can be better trained on people skills as well and teaching/instructing. I think it would create a more positive environment. I would recommend checking out other activities in Tacoma over checking out this climbing gym if you're just in the area for a visit. read more

What a great place to learn how to rock-climb! I always thought rock-climbing was intimidating and not for me. My friend convinced me to give it a go... And WOW - the classes were easy to understand, the staff was super-friendly and super-helpful, and progression was quick. And the reward of "topping off" and sitting on top of the rock you just climbed. I guess it's one of the few places (if not only place in Western Washington) that you can "top off" - It's an amazing feeling and so accessible. There's some amazing and inspiring rock climbing super stars around you but there's always some normal looking people like me who are just trying it out. Yay :) read more

Finally gave in an signed up for a membership here. I've only been once (went on saturday for the first time) but it was an unbelievable workout and I intend on getting the most out of the membership fee. I am absolutely noob at climbing, so I was only able to do a few bouldering runs on the easiest of routes, but even that left my body aching in a fantastic way. It was as if I had discovered entire muscle groups never previously utilized. I can tell that once I get into the swing of it, I will find the many runs both challenging and plentiful enough to never get bored. Also, I really love the foamy floor that they have, as I found myself jumping off of the wall from about 8-10 feet off the ground several times, with no negative effect. Hopefully I will be able to simultaneously get in shape and conquer my wholly irrational fear of heights =P I also really love that they have a little standard gym attached to the climbing facility. Even when I am too sore from climbing itself, they have several machines (all very nice and high quality) and also a full weight rack, etc. It is not a cheap membership fee, but if you enjoy climbing, as I believe I am destined to, this is worth the cash. read more

Love this place! The route-setters are very creative and there is a good variation between style and movement. Don't be discouraged in getting a membership because you don't know anyone that climbs or are new to climbing. There are many friendly people that will offer you a belay and you'll make friends easily! At least this has been my experience. I only wish they extended the student discount to older adults as well! Also, the facility has (clean) showers! and a new addition (to lots of other goodies)- the pilates reformer!! read more

At the time we were here, there was a yelp check-in offer but it was no longer valid. Their rates are high. Maybe this is typical for climbing gyms around this area but this was the most expensive we have ever experienced. We were in town for a couple of weeks from Portland and left all of our gear at home, so this forced us to rent shoes and chalk. The dedicated bouldering section is very small, with some additional bouldering space on the roped walls, up to the bouldering height limit. Topping out is annoying, having to go over the wall, walk across to the gate, through a room, down the stairs, through the reception area, and then back into climbing area. It didn't take long to get bored, especially as the small space started getting more crowded, and people started to have to wait in line to climb a route. We definitely did not get $50 worth of climbing out of this visit. It's not a great place for bouldering, IMO. Perhaps rope climbers have a more enjoyable time here. read more

I just went here for the first time yesterday, and it was fantastic. The facility was clean, the staff was awesome, and most importantly, the routes were interesting, challenging, and consistent (by which I mean that the route setters do a good job of making sure that the ratings are accurate). The top-out boulders are really cool, as well. Really, my only complaint is that they aren't closer to where I live, but I can't hold that against them. read more

I took my 13 year old son here for his birthday and he and my 17 year old had a blast! For the both of them to climb for about 2.5 hours it was only ~$60. AND I was told that we could leave to grab lunch and come back and continue to climb (we didn't arrive early enough to do that, but maybe next time). The staff was very helpful as well. I've come about 5 times total and gotten a day pass every time. This was the first time the staff wasn't rude to me and my friend. Every other time when I come in the staff is very blunt and rude, it seems like I'm in convincing them since I have to rent a day pass. While the person we met at the front desk was nice the staff that was walking around wasn't nearly as nice. My friend and I are intermediate climbers and while we follow the basic commands such as 'on belay', 'climbing', 'take', and 'lower' we do have our own little commands that work for us since we climb together in and out of the gym. We had a staff member tell us that we need to do the "correct" commands, which she and I both found out of line a staff member would tell us how to communicate with each other. After that interaction, the staff were very short with us and kept giving us side eyes and mean glares. I found it very rude that a staff member would have an issue with our commands since they weren't mean or offensive and treated us poorly due to the interaction. read more

Major props to this gym for ditching the small pebble ground cover. That stuff is so annoying and dusty and cold and bleh. A nice sized gym with a good variety of bouldering and rope climbing. They have one of those fun "top-out" boulders, where you climb over the top and walk to the stairs, instead of down-climbing. They don't get the 5th star, because again, my bias lies with bouldering, and they just don't have quite enough of that for my taste. But that said, this is an awesome place with good variety in their rope terrain, and worth checking out! read more

Love this place! Definitely one of the best rock gyms I've ever been to. So much space and so many routes. Climbers of all levels will find something challenging here. It's a great place for kids too as they usually have the 2nd floor reserved for birthday parties. The staff are very friendly and gladly provide tips or even demonstrations for each route. Yet none of that compares to the raw strength you will build in your forearms alone -- enough strength to crush a small child (why would you even think about that you horrible person?!)! Completing each route will add a single hair follicle to your chest, another inch to your forearms, one more finger raised against to those that never believed in you. Raise your chin high, conquerer, gaze upon the inferior beings below you! Spit upon their worthless broken bodies and plant your flag of dominance over them! You are among the heavens, even gods cast their eyes away from you for fear of incurring your wrath! Invincible and untouchable.... that is until a small child 1/4 your height and 1/10 your age completes the same route in 1/2 the time with more finesse and perfect form. OMG PWNIES! Bring an extra pair of humility, these kids are good. read more

Recently attended a plus-size climbing meet up here and it was great! They purchased a handful of plus-size harnesses to keep in stock after being asked to be more inclusive. Their staff was great with helping out a bunch of first timers. Rental prices are fair, and the space is huge. They had a good variety of options for different skill levels, and a good mix of approaches that require a belay buddy and some that had the auto-belay so you can do your own thing. The climbing is really fun and everything is clean. The workers are so helpful and polite, and there's lots of routes for beginners to climb as well as more experienced climbers. There are cubbies to put your stuff, and the women's restroom even has free tampons in it, which shows you how cool the establishment is. read more

Definitely a fan! Really good bouldering routes (they call them circuits here). People here were very nice, and while it looks small-ish in pictures, there are actually lot of routes and good space to go for. (I've been in some tiny bouldering places, and I was afraid this would be super small, but not so!). The rates on the routes were pretty standard - I thought at least. They also have filtered water, some weights and open cubbies for your stuff. Pricing is typical - $15ish that doesn't include your own gear. read more

This place is pretty pricey for an indoor climbing gym, it ran about $30 per person for admission and rental gear, but my boyfriend and I had fun when we went! We went on a weekday and it was pretty packed. I think if we want to start getting more serious about rock climbing, we would purchase the deals. The routes are pretty challenging as we are beginners. The employees were knowledgeable and there are a bunch of classes offered for indoor and outdoor climbing. I also saw yoga classes as well. Really great climbing here. They have the perfect route rotation schedule and have such fun challenges. The top roping looks amazing but I really like the bouldering. Everyone here is really nice and there's a gym attached with treadmills, rowing machines, weights, stair masters, ellipticals and stationary bikes as well as weight balls and work out balls. Yoga upstairs but I haven't tried it yet! read more

This was my first time at an indoor rock climbing gym. I've done my homework and read reviews of other gyms and found that I liked this one the best. Their hours are one of the main selling points for me. My work schedule is very unstable and Edgework's hours are perfect for me. Also their rates are very fair. Also their routes were color coordinated for the entire gym. That's a plus for me because I'm a visual learner and just makes everything easier. I also liked that their climbing 100 classes were included in the membership. So I go in and the front desk people were very friendly. I got signed up and immediately took the intro into climbing 101 class. Ben was my instructor and he was very friendly and is very knowledgable about climbing. He made it seem like climbing was so easy that an infant could do it. I've also been to one of their monthly climber socials, where they serve beer to you if you're 21 or older of course. Since signing up at the gym, I've taken fitness, yoga classes, and been to the gym for about 2 weeks now. Everyone's very friendly, the instructors are extremely helpful and I've meet some friends. The environment is relaxed. I would recommend this gym to anyone in the area. read more

I went to this place because my friend bought a groupon for me. People, meaning staff and climbers alike, are nice. Facility is really small. When I say small, I mean really small. The lockers, showers, and toilets are in a room the same size as my bathroom at home. Not a huge fan of the way the top out system works. I prefer to top out and have an easy down climb then to walk all the way across a room and down a stairwell. There's no sauna or towel service. The climbs itself are underrated. The only nice thing that I found out was that if you wanted to lead climb, you can borrow a rope from the front desk. read more
