I love the fact that if you do their workouts regularly, it *will* improve your health. There's no guesswork or sales pitches from personal trainers or other nonsense-- just excellent group fitness HIIT workouts. And the coaches watch your form while you're doing weightlifting and are there to correct you or make suggestions. It's the best of group fitness and personal training wrapped in one workout -- with motivating statistics and uplifting energy to help make you give your best every workout. I got a mile readout at 4:57, technically 5:00 if splitting hairs. The treads only go up to 12 mph, so I'd maxed out and then added 1.5-2% incline on top. Anyway, 'nuff said. After this gym class, I jogged a 5K roughly back to my AirBnB. But that's a story for another day. I've been going to OrangeTheory (OT) for about a year now, so I know what I'm doing. Which indirectly means that I know what I'm doing in this review of an OT studio. I guess the real question is, do I really know how to end this review. The answer is, no. I went to OT Tacoma one day while on vacation, and I got a pretty respectable mile time. Then I jogged a not altogether easy 5K back afterwards. I'm visiting from the Northern Virginia area. So, yeah. I guess what I'm trying to say is, I have little to no idea what I'm rambling on about. But anyway, this studio was pretty dope.

TLDR; I do not recommend Club Pilates to anyone athletic with Pilates experience. The level 2…read moreassessment criteria are not taught in level 1 nor 1.5 classes at this studio. It is absolutely not worth the price. On a personal note: I felt like this was an experience of age discrimination as I was often the youngest person in class and for some reason someone noted "young, able body tho" on my assessment form after they decided to not recommend me for Level 2. (Most of the assessment form wasn't even completed) Full review: I've been an athlete since childhood, have done barre and other Pilates studios for years. I recently moved to Tacoma and decided to try Club Pilates. I am canceling my membership after giving it an honest effort for three months. I have paid nearly $300 per month for the minimum 3 month membership commitment to have unlimited classes (taking between 3-5 classes/week) for mediocre Pilates workouts. My whole goal for this 3 months was to test up to the level 2 classes in hopes of them being challenging and allow me to actually drop a bead of sweat or feel some sort of challenging exercise. Upon signing up for a three month membership, I asked when I could test for the level 2 classes and was told I wouldn't pass since the instructors "didn't know me." This was my first clue into the cult of Club Pilates; why is this form assessment also based on who you "know"? I believe that testing for form is acceptable to deem admission to higher level classes, but NOT when the form is not explicitly taught in class. The level 2 assessment was quite frankly a joke considering the way level 1 and 1.5 classes are taught. I attended class regularly during my 3-month membership trial with hopes of being approved to start attending level 2 classes. To my dismay, the level 2 assessment was full of questions relating to anatomical jargon that is never explicitly discussed in any of the class formats I've taken (Reformer Flow, Control, Cardio Sculpt). I am always open to form-correction, but hardly received any in all the classes I took. I would not recommend Club Pilates to anyone unless they are looking for very leisurely body movement, whether due to older age or mobility issues. Having lived in San Diego, Durham, and Seattle, I have found MUCH better Pilates studios than this one. So far in Tacoma I have found La Maison Pilates which is 10x better in terms of difficulty and they still emphasize form with smaller class sizes. It's a bit more expensive but actually worth the money.

You'll start to see the same people in your classes if you go at the same times/days, but I like to try to mix it up and go to a bunch of different ones if possible! One of the instructors, Nora, recently started a book club which has been a lot of fun and they do cool events and sometimes partner with local businesses as well. I think *all* of the instructors do occasional theme nights too like Beyoncé music, Monday night football, 80s week, etc which makes it fun because you know what kind of vibe you'll be coming in for! There's different types of classes, different levels, and the instructors have different vibes. Whatever work schedule you have you can usually get into a class per day! I liked how their intro class walks you through a lot of the different things you will be doing. It took us a handful (or more lol) of classes to finally get the Pilates lingo down so don't feel discouraged if you're having to look around your first couple of times to see what others are doing. The entire team here is incredible and the members are awesome as well. We have both done personal training (my trainer was Kam) here and learned a lot and we go to the Sunday class most often . Ascent is both welcoming and accommodating to folks of all identities and abilities and of all sizes. As someone with concerns about environments that can foster an environment where counting calories and weighing in are encouraged or emphasize is put on size, Ascent is the exact opposite. Ascent is a wonderful unicorn place where people can go just to learn how to better move their bodies and grow stronger and find victories that have nothing to do with size- like hiking longer distances, or having less back pain, or being able to lift more. They always offer alternative exercises to meet people where they're at which is super refreshing. They also host so many great events and series classes like queer inclusive self defense. We drive from a fair distance away because the community here is so much better and they have a mission you can't help but support. By far the best collective group of humans I've met since moving to Washington and that is such a testament to the owners Luca and Katie!

The…read moretrainers are down-to-earth and supportive, the environment is friendly and encouraging, and the workouts kick my butt every time. The focus at this gym is functional fitness, so you do a variety of exercises each time you go--including crawling, get-ups, weights (and body weight exercises), lunges, etc. I also love that the trainers will give plenty of modifications as needed, as I'm limited in shoulder mobility due to an injury. Their main format is small group classes, but personal training and open gym hours are also available. Which works for me, became I'm way more accountable when I'm in a class anyway! I've gotten noticeably stronger since I first started, which has helped me not only in my work and at home, but with my self-confidence overall. Exercise really is the best self care. Thank you, Ascent Fitness!

I've been with I love kickboxing for about 6 months before starting the #6WeekChallange. I…read moreoriginally joined the club to get ready for my military PT test. I hate running, so I had to get my cardio up. (I ended up doing really well, btw.) I'm pretty active (besides running, lol), I have been doing a lot of strength/weight training and I eat fairly healthy. I've was gaining weight (muscle mass) but not losing any body fat. So I decided to start the #6WeekChallenge to kick my butt in gear. It was definitely a challenge. Adjusting to the meal plan the first week was difficult; I was hungry about 99% of the week, but I lost 3lbs and 2% BF that week. The second week, I had no changes in my results, and I was extremely frustrated. (There were a few weeks where I didn't have any changes. ) After talking with the instructors, I adjusted my meal plan a bit to help out. By the 3rd-4th week, I still wasn't seeing the results I wanted, so I talked to some of my fitness friends for additional tips and I had to adjust my meals again. And because I wasn't eating very few carbs, I was unable to sustain my strength workout with weights, I just ended up doing a lot of body weight workouts and adding in more cardio (besides the 3-4 kickboxing classes per week). But I ended up losing 14 lbs and almost 8% body fat!! I was weak, tired, and hungry most of the 6 weeks and there were many moments I wanted to quit and just go eat a Cinnabon, but I'm glad I kept to it and am extremely proud of my results. Although, I know some of the weight I lost was muscle mass. Rather than recommending whether or not to join the club or the 6 week challenge, I'll state my pros and cons. Pros: 1. The instructors are AMAZING. They are very helpful and patient. And the push you when you THINK you can't or just don't want to do the work. 2. The other members/challengers are awesome. They are very encouraging, share tips, and are willing to be an accountability partner whenever asked. 3. Class times are accommodating, for the most part. There are classes later in the evening on most days, for those of us who work during the day. Cons: 1. The club and the challenge are really expansive, even with a military and member discount. 2. The club itself (Tacoma anyways) smells like stinky feet. (Until you get used to it.) 3. The punching bags are well used, it would be nice if they were updated. 4. Challenge specific; if you are fairly fit and don't really have the weight/body fat to lose, it's really difficult to be successful without doing additional things aside of the challenge itself.

If you're looking to increase the intensity of your workouts - this is the place! It's tough, but…read moremoves fast and you will feel it. Pros: friendly snd encouraging staff, modify things for new people, excellent full body work out Cons: high pressure sales pitch, and it's too expensive and not a flexible membership. $125/month and sign up for a year. If they had a punch card or a month to month - it would be much more doable. But if you aren't working out 3x a week every month. It's just too expensive for what you're getting. If you weren't committing to a year up front - it would be better. If they had a 10 punch card option- that would be helpful- but I also don't want to pay for 100 punches at once. They need more flexible membership types.

Case in point, on day one the owner diagnose an issue that I was having with my form for one of the Olympic, weightlifting movements, which another gym in the areas coaches hadn't noticed for seven months, and had led to an injury. Day one Joe diagnosed the problem and it was fixed without me even asking!There are two sides of the gym, dedicated for electric weightlifting on one side, and the other side, high intensity, interval training. This shit is easily accessible, clean, and has easy parking. It is not a globo gym, nor is it simply an iron fitness. There is space for what you need if it's a casino workout, or you're dropping in for open gym or individual weightlifting session. Coaches run classes on time, one hour, which is not the experience that I have had other community style gyms in the past in the area. American flag over the door, attentive coaches and community, never asking for reviews online (a great plus!), accessible in ten minutes or less from JBLM, Lakewood, all the way up to Ruston. Great location for access!

I have never felt like my effort was meet with results before coming here. I am 37 years old, and this year is the first time I've understood my body's needs and how to give it the best possible circumstances for health and wellness. I use Jeff's virtual Team Training, Serena's Superhero You and nutritional coaching. I'm forty weeks in to recording of nutrition and I don't ever want to stop habits, nor my relationship with Grit. The virtual training is more than just watching a workout. You can workout live with the coaches... and Jeff is ridiculously good and concise with remembering/recommending substitute movements for your limitations or injuries, and very resourceful with helping you utilize the objects you already have in your home. I have many many many public Facebook posts about this place if you're still on the fence about investing in yourself. Oh - and the generous outpouring of support and communication through several channels (fb,insta,email etc) is 24/7. They have really really found a way to personalize your health, while still keeping you part of the group.
