I have been doing yoga around the world for most of my adult life and I'm almost 50 years old now. This "sculpt" class with the instructor Tomio, was probably the most boring class I have ever attended. I barely broke a sweat and his voice and tone gave the impression that he was reciting the most dry text book for the 100th time and he didn't even want to be bothered. He gave insufficient communication when sequencing and teaching, having no cues for breathing, giving no explanation or modification, having no clear explanation of what muscles students should be engaging and only using about 75% of class time for actual exercises. He used so much time up for talking, changing music and water breaks, it was actually a good waste of my time. He clearly had some experience with upper body strength, but his class was full of older people who didn't have the same ability as he did. He didn't read the room and adjust to his student's abilities or give any modifications or suggestions for older people who couldn't perform his unrealistic exercises. Most students were 40+ women and he had the class doing planks or push ups for the majority of the practice. I couldn't leave fast enough because he repeats everything he says at least twice, as though it's a nervous tic, and it's very hard for someone who is an instructor to listen to his communication skills. He couldn't even count down without repeating himself and counting double. I also kept pulling long hairs from my weights. Yuck! After class, I tried to rinse off in the shower and it was full of a bunch of dark brown hair. I don't think this place is for me. read more

This was a fantastic space. I hadn't done this type of yoga in a while but the breathe and movement was exactly what my body needed. There was plenty of space for the students in class. I liked how the teacher demo-ed some of back bends and guided us. Yoga is truly take what you need and leave what doesn't serve you and I will gladly be back. I was so excited to finally try Expand Yoga but was thrown off by instructor TARA who was quite unfriendly, unwelcoming & rude as a new student at their studio. Luckily, they have a good rotation of teachers! Liz was one of the other instructors. She was very welcoming & kind. Every time I went to a class, there were always people talking before and after class which is so annoying when your trying to meditate especially before class but hearing other peoples entire conversations instead. Unlike many hot yoga studios, this studio doesn't offer a cold towel infused w/ essential oils at the end of class. Their bathroom, locker & shower/changing area is CO-ED which is different. Their parking is quite small & tight but also have street parking available. read more

Follow up: I am now going on my 4th month of my Hot Yoga journey with Expand Yoga Federal Way. I want to share everything I've learned during this time. I practice around 5 days a week. I mostly attend Original Hot but have pushed myself to try Vinyasa and Yin. I LOVE doubling up on an Original Hot day with Yin. My body feels stronger now than it has in years and it's been a slow build to this point since I began my journey. In the time I've been practicing, not only have I progressed physically in my postures but mentally I have gained so much confidence. It was a struggle when I first started just looking at myself in the mirror. I am a tired, hard working mom with 3 boys. It was hard to look at who I am now compared to who I was before all that. As time went on, I started to face myself and gain confidence in the strong woman I am. I no longer want to look away and I appreciate what I see in front of me. I never would have had this, had I not started practicing with Expand. The studio is such a friendly and welcoming community. I've made so many new Yoga friends that I enjoy practicing with. We cheer each other on, we love going to the same classes together and it's nice to meet people who love the practice as much as I do. Yin has become a fast favorite class for me. I describe it as deep stretching with meditation. It has helped me improve so much in my flexibility with Original Hot. If I can, I double it up with Original Hot. However, it is a class that I would just take alone as well. It is so relaxing and almost a spa like experience. Vinyasa is my challenge. I swear every time I take that class I just relish in how improved I am with Original Hot I take Vinyasa though because it is my weakness. I am usually sore after the class and it throws my body out of its usual routine. My hope is that one day it isn't a class I drag myself to but rather one I strive to take. Original Hot is my GO TO. I could practice it over and over without getting bored. Even though it's always the same 26 postures, there is always room for growth and improvement- as with any of the classes to be honest. I LOVE the hot temps of the room and just feel this burst of energy after the class. It's really such a natural high. I've even doubled up with Original Hot twice in one day. THAT was exhilarating. The studio itself is so spacious and can clearly house many comfortably. I love the heating elements in the room. It creates a different level of heat than I have experienced at other studios. It's next level but doesn't wipe you out. Every instructor is amazing. Each one wants you to improve and will give instructions for corrections. They have each taught me something new multiple times. It's fun when they get excited with you on your improvements. I feel like I have a group of cheerleaders. Everyone is great at making you feel special and important to this community they are building. After class, every instructor is happy to help you with any questions you have. They are also great at demonstrating and explaining the why. Their experience shows with their knowledge. I just don't know where I would be right now if it weren't for Expand Yoga Federal Way. I feel like I was just floating with no direction with the same thing happening every day. I look forward to my classes and I walk around feeling confident rather than hiding myself. Attended the hot yoga class this morning at 8:30. First let me start with the good. Plenty of street parking and easy to find. Teacher was good, music was good. My one and only complaint is that the studio should really cap the class on how many students. I'm not sure of the capacity in that particular space however if there was an emergency it would be. Hard to make sure everyone got out safely. I know this is obviously a Saturday morning class so maybe more crowded than other days but capping the class would be nice read more

Vinyasa class instructor talked so much & so fast, I couldn't understand what she was saying. I had to watch other students to know what to do. Although it was candlelight, the lights didn't go off until the end. No music. The instructor did not demonstrate most moves, and the practice felt very sporadic, I never achieved any sense of flow. All in all I was disappointed. I've had one good vinyasa class here. But I don't know who the teacher was and I haven't seen her since. That class was excellent, music, energetic, good vibes, excellent flow. So I think this studio is very hit or miss. I think a candlelight vinyasa should be about flow, good music and vibes. I felt the instruction was ridiculous and almost rolled up my mat & left, for context I've been to many yoga classes over the years- this class was not for me but maybe others enjoyed it- if they could even understand what she was rapidly speaking- which at times was indecipherable. read more

Yet another class where hardly anyone in the room can do "standing head to knee" posture, simply because it is taught completely and untterly incorrectly. Yet another class where the teacher talks about tradition but teaches several postures incorrectly and dosen't help anyone who desperatley needs assistance, because they are doing it wrong. The arrogance combined with there total lack or understanding of this yoga (the hot 26), leaves a lot to be desired. Blind leading the blind! read more

Love this spot and can't wait for them to be able to re-open after COVID-19! I'm a big hot yoga fan but was also in search of Hot Vinyasa flow when I moved to WA. I couldn't find much but Bikram or Hot Hatha in Olympia, where I used to live, so I would drive to Tacoma just for the Hot Vinyasa flow. As an added bonus the owners are so nice and great instructors as I have taken class from them both...I'm even enjoying the hot hatha classes! Note: the changing room is co-ed which I'm cool with but had never encountered before. There are a couple areas where you can change in private besides taking up the bathroom for changing if you aren't actually using the restroom:) Also, appreciate their selection of yoga clothing/accessories and snacks/drinks. They carry "harmless coconut water" which is my fave and a tasty natural protein bar made by a family member (can't remember the name). read more

Hot yoga at its finest. The studio is easy to navigate, with a small selection of yogi necessities and beverages. I've been to about 5-8 classes so far and have had (almost) all very nice classes. The only reason I say almost is I had one class where the fellow teaching was new at teaching vinyasa, so it was kinda repetitive and not really going anywhere, nonetheless I sweat it you and left feeling like it was a good stretch. Tacoma location: black haired instructor that thought the 7pm class 8/17/23 - Rudest instructor I have ever seen. She sat on her bottom in the back of the class and yelled directions. What yoga instructor sits on their a$$ and don't instruct? I was told by the blonde instructor (who did have good customer service) that you can modify your poses to fit your abilities. This was my first yoga class after 6 months of surgery and recovery. She got super rude and argued with me about my capabilities. I told her I was not physically able to hold the pose she wanted me to do. She rudely said "yes you can! I just saw you". Worst place ever! Save your money and go some place where they are professional and helpful. That's not here. read more

I had never taken a hot class before coming here. I Went to ~25 classes during my work trip to Tacoma. I think I took a class with each teacher they have and all were equally amazing. Some with uplifting words, some hyper focused on postures and alignment, some super silly and funny, some more serious, but all great. Would highly recommend it to anyone in the area. read more

I have been looking for a yoga studio to call home, doing the trials at 4 other studios in town - Expand Yoga is by far my favorite one. I've been practicing yoga for about a year, but in the 2 short months I've been practicing at Expand - I've made monumental improvements. This is the studio for someone who truly wants to improve their yoga practice. The class schedule works for many types of daily schedules, which is great for me because mine changes often! The instructors are kind, talented, and knowledgeable. It's clear the training they receive is in depth and form-focused. What I like most is that all the instructors are very intuitive to what the class as a whole, and each individual needs at the time - whether it's compassion, intensity, more heat, less heat, etc. The studio is always clean, and has great energy! They have lockers, showers, clean restrooms, changing rooms and basically everything you could possibly need. The community is what really makes the studio the best. The fellow yogis who have been going to Expand for years are so welcoming and go out of their way to ask your name and get to know you. Whether you are new to yoga or just new to the studio, this is the perfect environment. I was nervous about the quality of yoga here in Tacoma after moving from Seattle but they definitely put me at ease the day I walked in. I've gone for the 60 and 90 minute Original Hot Class and their Vinyasa classes. The owners/partners (Liz and Matt) are also teachers here and do such a wonderful job with instruction. Matt and Patrick always have something funny to say out of the blue and Liz and Tara are calming and know their business. They are truly all wonderful teachers. I feel challenged, calm and safe here. I say safe because I know that they know what they are doing and it shows in how they teach. Totally a non-judgmental and helpful place. Both classes are hot, which I prefer for my neuropathic pain and they' expanded to include non-hot yoga upstairs. The space is open, bright, non-stinky (a plus!) and clean. They sell mats, towels, water, etc and have little lockers for your purse or whatever and there are two showers. Prices are definitely on the less expensive side for what they offer and I pay $75/mo for unlimited classes. It really is a great experience and I feel like I am part of a small family. I can't wait to meet the rest of the instructors! FYI- Doors open a half an hour before classes and there's construction going on so you may need to park further away. read more

business traveling with my yoga mat again! this time to tacoma, wa. i did some local research for nearby yoga studios and found expand yoga! expand yoga is my yoga studio away from home :) for $15, i was able to get a week trial but i was only able to make it to 2 classes, but the 2 non-heated classes i attended were worth my $15: 1. balance and inversions: 75 minutes of upside down fun! the studio i practice regularly at usually takes most of the class to warm up, but in matt's class we were able to do a quick warm up and went right into inversions! wasting no time, and definitely 75 minutes well spent as we challenged ourselves to push ourselves outside of our comfort zones. there were only 5 of us in class so we were able to get a lot of one-on-one attention. to be honest, this was the first time i've conquered handstands, and i'm so dang proud :) 2. acro: 75 minutes of flying! acro yoga is more like "partner yoga". you get paired up with different classmates of equal weight and height and you fly away! i've seen acro yoga done before but never had real instructions, but patrick gave very good instructions and i was even able to balance people 2x my weight! it's definitely a trust based activity. if you're not comfortable with being hands on with others, i suggest to stay away from acro. acro yoga also has stretching benefits as well, according to patrick he was able to learn some of these techniques while he was in thailand and share them with us. now lets get down to the logistics: 1. parking: easy street parking when i was taking the 7:30 classes. plenty of free parking if not outside, then close to the studio. 2. mat rental: $2/usage. and they're quality manduka mats! i fell in love with my mat so much i'm about to empty my wallet for one :) 3. equipment: manduka errthing! 4. studio itself: super cute. love the simple design with the hanging overhead lights. 5. age discrimination free: a family of 3 (mother with 2 daughters), one daughter i'm guessing is no older than 12? was attending the acro yoga class :) didn't get to go to the hot yoga classes, so can't comment on those. i'm sure those are great as well :) read more

Pay attention to their liability contract! There's a portion regarding photographing you & posting such photographs online with very broad verbiage removing them from all liability... even if the photos are of you when you're not doing yoga. This is not how they state it, but it is included in the vague verbiage used. When asked if I could remove the section & simply not be included in photos while I am practicing/there, I was told it cannot be removed since they sometimes take photos of classes in progress. I am sure the classes & teachers are wonderful, but have never come across a studio with photography as part of their liability contract, let alone such a vague & broad photography clause in a day-to-day liability form (I have practiced in WA, CA, & done retreats to Costa Rica). If it is ever removed or made more specific, I would love to practice there just from the great things others are saying & from how nice/helpful the staff was otherwise! read more

This place is wonderful. I'd love for it to be a hidden gem, but I also want the owners to make money. So here it goes: BEST YOGA STUDIO EVER. The instructors are super nice and very knowledgeable. I'm pretty picky about my hot yoga studios. But then I read the reviews on Expand Yoga, I had to check it out. And they sell coconut water (a big plus for me) - and also bottled water, of course. I've been to to Bikram classes where it was full. And other days, the class has very few people (though I've been told it's hit or miss for the number of students in each class - I went to a crowded 7pm class last night, then stayed for the 9pm Vinyasa class, which had very little people in it. Though I never thought I could do two classes in a row, I'm going to do it from now on - if time allows. And I 'm actually excited that I'll be going there as much as I am able! NEW: Expand Yoga just started Manduka mats and mat towels (AWESOME!!!). The prices are the best you find (when you consider tax, shipping, etc - if you're like me and buy on-line mostly - yes, they have the same prices as Amazon (sometime a less - like a dollar or two), and no waiting for the UPS guy!). They have various "styles" of Manduka mats - though I went ahead and got the "PRO". They sold out of their initial order in less than a week (like two days), so they are ordering more inventory and should be available tomorrow or so. You really need to check this place out. It's my favorite studio by far. The prices are reasonable. $6 for a vinyasa class, $8 for a Bikram class. And of course you can buy an unlimited month class for $75. If you can commit to longer than a month, they have 6 month and year memberships that save you a lot of money. They are now taking credit cards (used to be just cash and PayPal). Did I I say I love this place? Hope to see you there! And did I mention that they have a refrigerator full of yummy coconut water for sale - very refreshing after class.. Just come - you'll like it... P.S. I never thought that I could do two back to back yoga classes. Okay, so the second class was more like instruction/practice since hardly anyone showed up (9pm) class. Today, I'm gonna take both the Bikram and Vinyasa class again. Wish me luck! read more

I went to Expand for the first time last night for the 9pm hot yoga session.....oh-my-god!! I've never been a huge yogi, but after yesterday I'm hooked for life! Here's The breakdown: Fantastic studio. Its clean w/ hardwood floors and a breakaway room for sessions. Great natural light during the day and amazing tranquil darkness w/ dimmed lights in the evening. Great location. I drive down from DesMoines for sessions here. Their located right off an exit to downtown Tacoma, so I'm driving at "60" mph ;-) form home all the way there. Parking is really easy on the street. WORLD CLASS instructors!! I met two of the instructors and have to say that they are extremely down to earth, constant professionals who keep all of the natural elements that make yoga so fantastic in action as they guide a session & in conversation after each session. The best prices. Easily the best prices I've seen in town and most definitely a third of the cost to go to studio in Seattle (without sacrificing ANY of the immense up-sides of an authentic yoga "experience") I'm offering my highest recommendation for Expand Yoga on Pacific Ave. in downtown Tacoma. Two huge thumbs up and a fully five-star experience! read more

This review is just for the 90 minute original hot yoga class. This was my first class at Expand, and I will likely go back once more before my 1-week trial membership is over, so I may update my review after that. I came in for the 7pm hot yoga class. Luckily for me, the class size was small given the storm that was coming through that night, so I only had about 7 people in my class including the instructor. The usual 26 postures were practiced during the class, but after we finished the standing poses, we went into savasana (corpse pose) while the instructor dimmed the lights and turned on the AC to cool the room down quite a bit. We probably laid in savasana for 5-7 minutes while the instructor talked about corpse pose and his personal thoughts on dying (which I thought was a bit weird). For as many yoga classes as I've taken in this exact format, I've never experienced such a long break before floor poses, ever. The bummer for me was that it completely broke my stride. Then I began to wonder how we could afford such a long break between the standing and floor series, and it dawned on me that we were not holding any of the poses for the usual 60 and 30 seconds that they should be held for. I then realized that this was why I felt rushed through the series, and was way behind the rest of the class when coming out of the current pose, as the instructor was going into the next pose. We finally started up with the floor series and got through those poses. At this point there was another class going on upstairs which resulted several loud thuds and a bit of shaking in the studio. I managed to tune out this noise and finish up my practice. Why they would have a "loud" class in the upstairs studio, while a no-impact class took place in the downstairs studio, was odd and inexplicable. Also, there was not much guidance or "correction" during class to better attain the proper postures from the instructor. I am coming back to my practice after a few months of being away, moving here from out of state, and contending with a moderate back injury. Sometimes, hearing that guidance offers a different perspective and that can make all the difference in the world. Even a little bit of positive reinforcement from the instructor would have been nice. I think he made 2-3 comments in total that were positive. During a 90-minute class, that's not much. My overall impression: this is a good beginner studio to try if this is your first time doing yoga. For me, I felt like the 90-minute original hot yoga didn't offer the flow I've come to expect from more traditional hot yoga classes, so I would not come back for these classes. When I asked the two instructors standing at the front desk after class about the format of the 90-minute hot class, the response I got was about how their class was not meant to be as intense as a bikram studio. Hmmmm.... Then why offer a 90-minute class at all? One of the women I talked to, Liz, was great. I would come back to try out a class with her regardless of what she teaches. The other two instructors I spoke to seemed unseasoned and at times stand-offish. This might be a good studio for a different class, but I won't be back for the 90-minute class. read more

Me: Extremely out of shape. About as flexible as a piece of sheet metal. BROKE. Expand Yoga: Very welcoming, friendly and approachable. Extremely economical! (And worth every penny.) Encouraging (especially for new students like myself.) I have only taken a couple of classes so far, but I plan on taking their 30-day challenge. I was reluctant at first because I knew that I would be in a hot room with people able to bend and twist their bodies in ways that I could not even imagine. LIz, one of the owners, was super friendly. She showed me around, told me what the pricing options are and reassured me that I would be okay. :) During the class, she is always giving the less experienced students alternative options for the more difficult poses. For me, I was a bit self-conscious at first because I had no idea what I was doing and the mirror is not very forgiving. But, Liz did a good job of keeping my mind on my own practice and not worrying about what anyone else was doing. I have yet to find a yoga studio that compares to Expand. They have a wide variety of traditional and vinyasa classes, both hot and non-heated options. My favorite is still the first class I ever attended at Expand, hot vinyasa, a energy packed 60min class filled with sun salutations and other traditional poses while being serenaded with the instructors choice of music. It's light-hearted yet therapeutic, a really great experience to share with your friends too. Liz and Matt are incredible business owners as well as instructors. They have really took their time with the all the necessary details while maintaining a small studio feel at Expand. The classes are dynamic, yet easy to pick up if you haven't been in for a while. If you need a new mat, towel or some yoga swag they have plenty of options. They also offer discounts for students and rotating specials, that are good to take advantage of if you're on a budget. read more

I love yoga, and Expand has expanded my love for yoga. The instructors give alot of information durning class so that you can be succesful at any level, I feel great after each practice. Expand is extremely clean studio floors are wood and they offers showers, bathrooms, and lockers. They have a cute selection of merchandise, but the primary concentration is the practice itself... The prices are extemely resonable and they offer all sorts of ways to help get you to a commited practice without digging deep into your pockets. 15 dollars gets you all you want for a week, still unsure try all you want for two months at 100 dollars...Once your ready to practice on the regular, get a wonderful year of unlimited studio time for 75 per month. There are class from morning till the late evening...This is wonderful way to get your practice in even when your schedule is busy...Expand is there for you. read more

I have been in the process of searching for a yoga studio in Tacoma and was so happy to find this place. I went to an evening hot vinyasa class that was packed! LIKES: -Although there were a lot of yogis in the class, the instructor made sure we all had enough space to practice. -The instructor focused a lot on alignment, moreso than most yoga classes I have been to. - I enjoyed the light alternative music playing in the background during class -They offer several classes throughout the day -Prices are very reasonable for a yoga studio -They have lockers to put your belongings away in. -They offer heated claasses GRIPES: -None. I meant to rate this studio about 6 months ago, when I was actually practicing there (I was commuting from Seattle to Tacoma at the time). After trying to find another studio in Seattle that could rival Expand Yoga's awesomeness, I've realized how much I miss Expand Yoga. The instructors are great. They foster a non-judgmental, non-competitive atmosphere. This would be a great studio for beginners, because the instruction is clear, and the instructors give frequent reminders that it's okay to take child's pose if it's needed. (Even fit people can have trouble adjusting to the heat in hot yoga -- I don't think this is as well-acknowledged in a couple of the studios I've been to in Seattle, and it can be a real turn-off or even dangerous for beginners.) However, I still felt physically and spiritually challenged by both the Original Hot and Vinyasa Flow classes. I left practice feeling wonderful -- no small feat given the 2+ hours of commuting and stressful job. The space is beautiful and clean. There are lockers and showers. Prices are reasonable for yoga. I love this place! They are so friendly, generous with their time in explaining the pose and alignment. I've done Bikram at another studio and felt intimidated and unsupported... I leave Expand feeling like I worked really hard AND with great energy. Last Sunday I did the hot vinyasa flow to live cello music... I was able to fully soften onto pigeon pose for first rime in 5 years of practice! Expand is what I always hoped a studio could be.
