So I "discovered" this place when the owner was interviewed on the news about the actions of an apartment dweller in the building she is in. The place looked interesting, so I decided to check it out. I was under the impression that this was a sit down restaurant, but during the colder months, it's a walk up window only - they plan to put tables out on the sidewalk when it's warmer. So trekking the food home to Oak Park was necessary - fortunately I had an insulated bag in my car which helped keep the food warm. So I ordered a quesabirria with the consomme, a sope with al pastor marinated pork and pineapple and an order of white queso with chips. It was the latter that was to die for - awesome dip with some jalapenos on top to add a little kick. The quesabirria was good, but the consomme that a guy chats about on a video on their website was just OK. Sope was primo. This is my new go to for a quick dinner in the area. The fish tacos are fantastic, always something I order. Really all the tacos are so tasty. Everything on the menu I have tried has been bomb. A few other favorites are the elote and fried plantains. Just great flavor. Everyone has always been super nice and friendly. In Edgewater one of our favorites is Edgewater Taco craftily hidden on the west side of Broadway. Their menu has everything- and even a spicy Asian soup with Mexican flair. This place is a couple blocks from where I live and it is so very good. Everything I have tried thus far has been A grade and fantastic. Served neat and prepared fresh everyday. I highly recommend if you like quality Mexican food for a decent price. Perfect takeout for a movie night in or even vibing with the fam/buds. Fish Tacos are FIRE. Finally made a visit to this establishment and plan to go back today! Authentic, flavorful and such a wide variety of items on the menu. Their birria and chile relleno meals were a hit! Good beans and rice as well. The individual who took my order was clear, kind, repeated my order to assure he got it down accurately was great. Great joyful energy and all around on top of his game. This is really more of a 3.5 rounded up to a 4. I have mixed feelings about Edgewater Tacos and it's a spot I'm open to visiting again, but probably won't be craving. They don't have dine-in options for now, but they are offering a comfortable amount of outdoor dining, delivery, and takeout. You can order directly from their window- menu is on the wall next to it. The good: Fish tacos and chimichangas all the way! I can imagine they won't travel well though, so I can only speak for the items fresh from the counter. Both had a wonderful crunch and flavor. Chimichanga is ginormous and well worth the price. The meh: Food took a while to come out so it may be better to call ahead. Tried the al pastor and chorizo tacos but they were both just okay. Wish I got guac with my chips instead of pico because the pico tasted as watery as it looked. read more

This taco joint has evolved a lot especially during hard times (pandemic) but one thing that has remained the same is their food. Always very consistent with their service and quality of the food. The only option is to pick-up or take-out but Edgewater Tacos always makes your meals fresh. I usually get a torta or taco dinner. I love the Al pastor ! I also like how well they prepare the sides and sauces. They don't cut corners so the rice is good as well as the refried beans. The other day I had freshly made salsa and I could definitely taste that. Overall, I love this place a lot. It's a lovely family business. I usually order pickup, and they quote it as ready in 15-30 minutes. I've enjoyed all of the food I've tried. My favorite so far is the Birria Ramen combo! The consommé has noodles in it and could be a meal of its own; it's the best birria I've tried in Chicago so far. read more

Awesome El Pastore pork burrito. Very nice guac and plantains. Fish tacos we well prepared and presented though in need of some extra seasoning. The pico de gallo was a bit disappointing without much fresh character. In general the food was the best Mexican food we have found in Chicago (so far!). read more

Sorry to say but the tacos aren't that good. To me it's like Americanized tacos, I'm disinterested.

When attempting to find a new local Mexican restaurant to try, we stumbled across this well-reviewed, quite literal "hole-in-the-wall." The menu has a variety of selections, however we wanted to try just a few tacos. Maybe we made the mistake of picking it up and eating it at home since by then it was cold, soggy, and the chips were stale. Next time, we'd definitely eat on the outdoor tables. The Guac was the highlight, however, could've used more jalapeños for flavor. The chicken tacos had a great flavor made better by the hot sauce they give you with your order. May revisit but overall find the prices on par with the quality. read more

We drove out of our way because the tacos here made a top list of tacos. When we arrived it appeared closed but we looked thru the window and saw a cook. The dining area was closed because it only held 12 people and too small to spread people out. My fish taco was excellent! It had a great crunch. Good food but expensive. Should a burrito plate cost $10-$12? You're also waiting for your name to be called to pick up your food. Not a big deal, but, again: for the price.... Outdoor seating only (for now, anyway) means you have to also have some strategy for making paperweights out of whatever's handy. Absolutely delicious with AMAZING customer service! I recently moved to the area and am thrilled to have found my taco place! I had the steak tacos and the meat was incredible. It's evident they take the time to ensure their food is of the upmost quality. My friend had the chimichanga and chicken tacos. He ate so fast I barely saw his food but the brief moment I did it looked just as tasty as mine. Yes this place is a hole in the wall. Yes it took only about 4 seconds to inhale one of the best prepared tacos I've ever had. They staff was totally accommodating (hold the chipotle mayo please), the food - authentic, delicious AF and totally reasonably priced. I was totally snooping on some other patron's steak fries, once I was done with my fish taco, and pretty sure I'll have to go back to try them. And 18 other things on the menu. I probably shouldn't be writing this review while hungry. The chorizo chimichanga that my guy ordered was HUGE. I didn't try it, b/c I'm pork free, but it looked pretty legit - and you can see that it's longer than the plastic knife you will need to cut up this monstrous delight. This is not a place to take your family of 9, as I think there are only about 9 seats total in this place, but it IS the place to order from for your family, b/c I suspect just about everything on the menu is delicious. it was less than $20 for two of us, granted I only had one taco b/c we were heading somewhere else where I knew I'd want to have a snack at, but I might be kicking myself after the fact b/c I want all the things on their menu now. This is a small taco spot with good tacos from what I tried. The order and payment are taken at the counter and when the order is ready you pick it up. A good authentic Mexican taco is simple. It has meat with cilantro and a lime on the side. All the flavor should be infused in the meat. The ground beef taco shined here. The flavors came through and melded well with everything else. I'm a convert. Unfortunately this place is a bit of a ways away from where I live in Chicago but honestly the food is enough for me to make the trek up! I came here while I was in the area with low expectations and left with a stunned palate. I started with 3 tacos - all decently priced (not dirt cheap but pretty standard for Chicago). I tried the fried fish (DELICIOUS), al pastor (my favorite), and carne asada (had a great kick to it). All were amazing. You have the option of lettuce+tomatoes OR cilantro+onions. I stuck with the cilantro and onions and didn't add any extras to each taco. Afterwards, I was still craving more so I hesitantly tried the carnitas tacos. Generally I'm not a huge fan of carnitas, but theirs is SO GOOD. Oozing with flavor and juice. By the end of the meal my sweet tooth was kicking in, so I had to try their horchata-- which was (to no surprise to me at this point) delicious as well. I really liked that they keep theirs chilled with no ice, so the ice doesn't dilute the drink when it melts. There's a 16oz vs 32oz option. The 32oz option is worth it if you can find someone to split it with ($3 vs $4). Other small details about this place. There's no public restrooms here (so pee beforehand!) and there is limited seating. Lots of people come in to grab take-out which may be an option if it's convenient for you. Their salsa verde which comes complimentary is very tasty as well. Their staff is very friendly and willing to give recommendations. Overall, a GEM of a spot for tacos in Chicago (which typically is not an amazing location for Mexican food in my experience). read more

To begin, the owner of this establishment is second to none. She has an extremely bubbly and sweet personality! I think her food shows her true passion. The last time I ate here I had the al pastor, ground beef, chicken, and fish tacos. I would say al pastor is probably my favorite, although they are all pretty good. The fish taco was good, but I think they could use a little less breading. The elote with flaming hot Cheetos is something I look forward to trying in the future! read more

Edgewater Tacos might be one of my go to spots if it were closer to me...(sad face). My favorites: Steak tacos - delicious, hot and fresh. Green salsa - one of my favorite salsas in Chicago. It's got a good amount of heat to pair along with the flavor. This stuff brings the steak tacos to another level. Horchata - the right flavors and perfect temperature. Granted it was hot that day and we biked over but the temperature was damn near perfect. Water - same with the horchata, their water temperature w/out ice was on point that day.... I don't know why it took so long to get here! WOW! It is really fantastic. Let's start from the top. It's a very small taco shop, so if you're planning on eating there, it could be a wait. Like 10 seats, and that's AWESOME honestly. In nicer weather they have outdoor seating as well. The service is GREAT. They are so nice and excited that you came in. They are also really helpful with any questions you might have, or if you are asking for suggestions. Big bonus. The chips and salsa - the sals is SO good. It's a salsa verde and has a great kick to it. I'd put it at the higher end of medium, but doesn't lose ANY flavor to the heat. The chips could be saltier, imo but they still do the job of transporting that delicious salsa to my mouth. The tacos - the vegan option is rice and beans with your choice of cilantro and onion or lettuce and tomato. Doesn't sound like much, right? WRONG! SO WRONG!!! They actually care about their rice and beans and the season them incredibly well. The rice I could eat a bucket of if they served that much, and the beans are so creamy and really well made. They know what they are doing and these were really satisfying for as simple as they seem. I'd rather have this than a more complex, poorly made version any day! The main show - tortilla soup - also vegan and if you do not get this you are missing out on a LOT of flavor. This is hands down the BEST tortilla soup I've ever had. Just thick enough, with some added corn and a little black beans as well. AND IT'S ONLY $4!!! I will be going back just for this and a cup of rice VERY soon.
