I came here for a weekend Pad Work workout followed by a Bag Drills classes. It was my first time…read moredoing any martial arts whatsoever so I really didnt know what I was walking into. However, from the very start I was greeted by friendly staff and the instructors were amazing. They helped me with my form, gave me personal instruction on how to improve, and watched to make sure I was doing everything correctly. I loved the Pad Work class so much that I went a few days later once again. The workouts are tough, especially if you're not in shape and they'll have you sweating a few minutes into the class however I can't stress how worth it feels afterwards. I also really like that they allow drop-ins. Want to show up to a class later in the day? Ok! Don't want to go? No obligation to show up. I'll definitely be going again.

There is no gym in the world that I know of where I'd rather train year-round than Five Points…read moreAcademy, and I've trained at some of the very best--on both coasts and recently in Thailand. The staff is friendly and professional. Our instructors are all outstanding. Many of them are professional fighters. Two of our Muay Thai coaches are Ajarns, and for 6 months out of the year maybe the gym employs one or more Thai champions as trainers-in-residence. The vibe here is friendly and warm mostly but businesslike. People come here to train and we don't mess around. When I started here I had to settle in and adjust and earn respect like anyone does at any gym where everyone knows everyone. Now that I've been here over a year, and fought twice, Five Points Academy has embraced me with open arms. And I'm grateful for that because the gym is filled with extraordinary, brilliant, talented, kind, and insightful athletes and fighters. Give us a try. And please introduce yourselves. I'm the nicest guy around.

Amidst the mayhem of the Financial District lies this amazing training facility. Awesome…read moreinstruction by Kru Rob and Kru Beatrice. These two amazing instructors/owners left promising careers in Finance to follow their passion! What more can you ask for??? When people believe in themselves that much you know that you're in good hands. Kru Rob is certified under Grand Master Toddy and is a world class fighter as well. Aside from the best instructors in the biz the most important thing to me when I'm looking for a gym to train at are the mats. This place is covered literally from wall to wall with the best and most expensive mats in the world, Zebra Mats. Ultra clean from the locker rooms to the reception area. You can't go wrong with this place, highly recommended!!!

Been going here for almost two months, taking the Muay Thai basic courses. So far, I love it. The…read morestaff and other students are friendly and encouraging. They have classes for both beginners and advanced. I myself started out as a complete newbie but never felt out of place. As another reviewer said, its more a family than just a gym. Classes are fun but can be hard work and fast paced, especially for me since I don't have the best stamina and endurance so it's sometimes hard to keep up. However, I can definitely feel myself improving at a nice pace. Shout out to Robert and Edward, my two favorite instructors. Pricing is pretty normal for the area, however what I like the best about this place is that you can come in any day you like, multiple times a week.

Pros: - The most affordable martial arts school in NYC…read more($75/month, $50/month for kids). You can't get these prices anywhere else in the city. - Private space. - Lockers and storage of personal items. - Extremely convenient location (nearby the 1, 2, 3 Chambers Street Station, 4, 5, 6 Brooklyn Bridge Station, R & W City Hall Station). - Provides equipment. - Traditional Japanese. - Cool viewing deck. Cons: - Limited class times. - Hard to contact. - Not up to date with technology. - Does not sell uniforms. - No water fountains. If you want a traditional Japanese experience, this is the right place. Unlike most martial arts schools where they are renting a space a few times a week, this building is a permanent space owned by the dojo. This is the oldest kendo and iaido dojo here in NYC, with some of the highest ranking senseis in the U.S. They're not in it for the money, they are in it for the love of the art. I've never seen children's classes be as cheap in the city; a typical Tae Kwon Do dojang is hundreds $$$ a month. They also have other martial arts like jodo, kenjutsu, and naginata. My critiques are that they don't have a water fountain, you have to buy your own equipment online, and are kind of ancient in their tech. I've called their phone line multiple times, only to have it go to a voicemail, their website doesn't have the registration forms to fill out, and they don't take credit cards for payment. They also don't have morning classes so you can't get an early morning workout.

The interior is beautiful, and they allow you to store your equipment (which is a HUGE plus in kendo, since carrying around a bulky set of armor, equivalent to the size of a French horn, could be a pain).
