Workshop NYC is legit. Jin and Gianna are awesome. This wasn't my very first class, but it was my first real focused, consecutive, introduction into Ju Jitsu and Muay Thai, and they made me feel right at home in the community that they've built in the gym. The environment has a nice blend of friendly, though, balanced with a 'I'll kick your ass' when you need it vibe (in a good way); which is something I look for in any sport or gym I involve myself with. They'll push you to do your best, but, at the same time, they are actually good people. Gianna is a great communicator when it comes to Muay Thai. Her explanations are very clear, and is great at building on the foundation or style you may have worked on in the past (ie: if you're more of a boxer, etc). But, also she is great at teaching you the style that she champions and focuses on herself. Jin teaches BJJ in a well thought out cycle-system, and it feels cohesive whether you're dropping into a gi or no-gi class. He is specifically receptive to partnering you with someone who is at your skill-level, weight class, or... perhaps above your skill level, if you need an extra kick; which is always appreciated. There is a certain respect for the art in the class that got me hooked; and Jin is a big part in instilling that. I did BJJ trials at a couple gyms and this is the one that got me hooked. Jin is a fantastic instructor -- clear, engaging, and great at breaking down concepts. Most importantly to me, he's obviously put a lot of thought into a methodical curriculum for the fundamentals classes (which is a lot more appealing, as a total beginner, than the 'move of the day' style at some of the other gyms I tried). I also really appreciate the atmosphere and culture at Workshop -- it finds the sweet spot where things are serious and focused on improvement, while still being fun and supportive. Facilities are a little tight (which comes with being in downtown Manhattan), and the slots for the fundamentals class fill up fast, but they've recently added a couple more times to train -- in particular it's one of the only gyms in the area that has both daytime and evening classes, which is really convenient. The smaller classes sizes also mean a lot more personal attention, both from instructors and upper belts. Overall, hope I'm training at Workshop for a long time. read more

Jin is the best jiu jitsu coach I've ever had. We do stand-up practice every single class (judo or wrestling) because he wants his students to be well rounded. His teaching style is rigorous, thorough, and personalized to each individual student. He doesn't just show you moves and expect you to learn them-- he also teaches you how to train and condition your body to move well and avoid injury. This is also the jiu jitsu gym I've felt most comfortable as a woman-- it's extremely welcoming and unintimidating and women are safe on these mats. Part of that is also due to Gianna; she is an amazing Muay Thai coach, friendly but specific, and she also runs the front desk. If you're having issues with your body or your technique, she'll find a way for you to work with it. She is extremely receptive and accommodating and it's nice to have a manager who's really in tune with their members. I once mentioned to her that I liked an obscure kombucha flavor and two days later it showed up at the gym. Brent is a great Muay Thai coach as well so this is just a great gym all around. read more

If you're looking for small classes, focus on technique, and a welcoming environment; this is it! The classes follow a set curriculum and the instructors are great at breaking down the mechanics of striking, kicking, grappling, etc. The Muay Thai instructor, Brent, will make sure you get a good workout but that you also learn the fundamentals of the topic of the week. Even if you don't plan on getting into a ring, he always orients your training so that you learn to move as if someone is throwing a punch at you. The BJJ instructor, Jin, is incredibly knowledgeable and aware. He's great at step by step instruction of even the most complicated of moves. Also, I like that he gives you adjustments to fit your size and fitness level ("do this if your opponent is bigger", "do this if you're not as flexible"). Very helpful. I recommend Gianna's Saturday morning fundamentals class if you're completely new to Muay Thai. She's super nice and patient. She'll break down the basics and mechanics of all things Muay Thai, including things like how to correctly hold pads for your training partner. With that said, you'll receive adequate attention and instruction at any of the classes no matter the level cause all the classes are small! They all feel like semi-privates :) A note on covid cleanliness: Area and equipment are cleaned after every class. The windows are always open and there are HEPA filters as well. I trained Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu off-and-on for several years in my hometown in North Carolina. With that being said, I consider myself a complete novice. I moved to the city in 2018 and quickly began searching for a gym to train Jiu-Jitsu. Preferably a gym that also taught Muay Thai, since I believe that the two martial arts go together quite nicely. After visiting a handful of very well-known schools in New York, I decided that Professor Yung's classes at his old gym were where I felt the most comfortable and confident in instruction style and atmosphere. I again took a long break, as most of us did, during COVID. Once gyms re-opened in the city, I discovered that Professor Yung and Gianna Smith, a Muay Thai instructor, had opened Workshop NYC. I didn't really hesitate to join because, as I mentioned, the instruction was/is great all around. I have not taken a significant number of classes but I remain very happy with the quality of instruction I have received. I felt immediately welcomed and valued as a member of the community, and I can't speak highly enough about the quality of the training. After taking a long break from both BJJ and Muay Thai, I decided to try out Workshop NYC while staying in the city. After just a couple sessions, my passion for both was vigorously reignited. So grateful I found this gym to train at. The instruction is top tier and the people and community are great and welcoming. I have trained Muay Thai in a few gyms but I have never quite had a coach like Brent. I trained under him in Brooklyn for a few months and I always thought prior to his classes that Muay Thai was just an exercise class. The direction he gives is constructive and phenomenal. I always joked about him opening his own gym because he is a beyond exceptional coach, focused on all of the little details correcting form to create a badass individual with incredible technique. It's a small gym with an incredible etiquete. Brent has a great sense of humor and a respectful demeanor that you can't teach. I recommend this little gem to anyone who wants to learn technique in the most professional caring way. Everyone who I have met so far that also works here has a class that is not easily describable. Workshop is an amazing community and environment for martial arts. Jin Yung the head bjj coach is a hidden gem and a incredible instructor. He is not only incredibly knowledgeable in jiu jitsu, but also has a background in education and teaches with precision and purpose. I have been training martial arts for over 15 years at many different locations and have trained under Jin the last 6 years and I have never encountered an instructor as intelligent, dedicated, and hardworking as Jin. I have been to some gyms that offer students little to no guidance on their development, and to no fault of their own seen these students who put in effort and show up consistently not improve year after year. This is not the case at Workshop. Simply put, if you show up and train consistently you will get really good because at Workshop whether it is Muay thai, Bjj, or strength training the instructors and community gives students close attention with focused development and care that is very special. read more
