Great BJJ school in NoHo. It's on the second floor and it's a pretty large space. My niece comes to the kids classes which are usually on Saturdays. You can take an elevator or stairs up. The space itself is huge with mats covering most of the floor. Everything is padded as far as the walls and corners go. They have cubbies holes for your personal stuff and for your shoes. The teachers here are all great teachers and very cool people. They also have Gi and No Gi classes as well. I want to say they have morning, afternoon and evening classes 7 days a week. read more

Clockwork BJJ is a clean and convenient gym located steps away from Union Square. Smaller class sizes offer more personalized attention to the students. I prefer coming here over other training facilities because I am shy, yet eager to learn. Everyone here welcomes you with open arms. The instructor and students actually want to get to know you. which makes me feel more comfortable and secure. I attended a seminar a couple months ago and was able to meet UFC fighter, Kenny Florian! That was a nice experience. Recently made the switch from a Krav Maga gym with a few ground classes taught by a bjj instructor but found there wasn't enough rolling/jits for me. I ditched striking and came across Clockwork after my "tour de BJJ gyms." I found the environment here to be clean, casual and not pretentious. Josh and the instructors make sure to introduce themselves and make you feel welcome as you walk in. Students are laid back and nice and the instruction is clear and great. I've primarily gone to white belt classes and love how it starts with drilling basics (bridging, hip escapes etc) vs push ups, jumping jacks etc...helps reinforce needed muscle memory and movement on the mat. It's been a year and a half journey for me here! I started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu after I was assaulted and was able to escape because I remembered a basic hip bump shrimp BJJ move I learned from a self defense class. It's a mentally stimulating sport and effective for self defense, especially if you're on a ground with a larger opponent. Clockwork Jiu Jitsu is an incredibly positive, family-style and safe place for women and everyone. I showed up at Clockwork a year ago, slightly intimidated about getting back into BJJ (I'd trained previously at a few gyms around the world but had taken 4 years off). I can safely say it was one of the best decisions I've made. Instructors: From day one, the instructors (Josh, Russ and Seb) remember every single student's name, which is representative of the personal attention they pay each student and how friendly and welcoming the environment is. Each of the instructors' level of instruction, knowledge, and attention to detail is top notch, and they genuinely care about their students and passing on their passion for the sport. Culture: The culture is incredible - everyone is incredibly welcoming, supportive, and friendly, and higher belts have frequently stayed after class to walk me through techniques. I have yet to encounter any egos, or witnessed anyone being condescending to those struggling with new techniques (actually, quite the opposite - every class, you see higher belts going out of their way to mentor newer practitioners). I have also never once worried about injuries from sparring partners going too hard - while training here is intense, everyone is controlled and respectful of each others' safety. The friendly and collaborative team environment is really unique and makes an enormous difference. Location and facilities: The location is very convenient (Broadway & Bleeker), and the the gym is in a large Noho loft which is bright and super clean. There are showers, and a laundry service is offered. Class structure / schedule: The class schedule is extensive/flexible enough that most people will be able to get in as much training as they want. I also like that Clockwork is flexible with people showing up late or leaving early - it makes it a lot easier to fit training in around work/life. The same move is drilled for the course of each week, which allows you to become proficient in it before moving onto the next. The warm-ups are all BJJ-related (versus, say, running around the gym). Overall, I can't say enough good things about Clockwork - it feels like a second home, and I'm genuinely excited each time I go in to train. I trained here for a brief time and I really enjoyed it. Josh is a great instructor and cares for his students. I have been coming here for a month now and the experience so far has been nothing but fun, educational, and most of all very welcoming. I started at Clockwork Jiu Jitsu two months ago as a complete beginner. I had never trained a martial art in my entire life, and hadn't been to a gym in months. Before attending class, I was very nervous and had no idea what to expect. But, the second I walked through the door, I was welcomed immediately. This is long over due as I generally don't leave reviews within the first month or so of joining a martial arts school as I feel I cannot provide an honest and fair opinion yet. But after being there for more than 6 months, here goes. The school is huge, unlike many other places in NYC (especially in Manhattan) where the students can barely fit. The school is clean and well maintained. The amenities include showers and laundry service for your gi's which, in my opinion, comes in very handy. The instructors are incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and approachable. Every instructor there remembers every student's name. Some might not think this is a big deal, but when you see how many people are truly apart of the school, (great schedule offering a variety of classes) it becomes pretty impressive. I never felt like just another brick in the wall at Clockwork as all the instructors walk among the class and offer personal attention and guidance to each of the students. The classes are well organized and provide a great deal of flexibility for those with a busy schedule like me. There's a class going on at pretty much any time of the day and is open 7 days a week. The students in the classes are friendly, welcoming and supportive. You won't get hurt or thrown around just because it's your first day (or week) of class. The culture at Clockwork strives to be chill and emphasizes on helping each other to grow and get better together. For a safe and ego free BJJ school with knowledgeable instructors, I would definitely recommend checking out Clockwork. I'm a Jiu Jitsu brown belt who was visiting from out of town and looking for a good place to train. Stumbled upon Clockwork Jiu Jitsu and decided to check it out. I'm SO glad that I did. I was immediately welcomed with open arms by not only the instructors but all of the students. The whole place had a very friendly, open and down to earth vibe. Nice clean facility with lots of mat room and showers in the locker rooms. The Jiu Jitsu training was great with multiple black belts. I learned an awesome spider guard pass I'd never seen before. Lots of technical rolls with all different belt colors, good movement and fun. I would highly recommend checking out Clockwork. With so many 5 star reviews, I couldn't wait to check this place out. I spoke with someone named Kyle to meet before a class and try it out. It all went downhill from there- I showed up at the time we agreed to meet, and Kyle (Or anyone for that matter) isnt anywhere to be found. I can't even get up the elevator. After emailing him, without a response, I waited in the unheated vestibule for about 20 minutes with about 4-5 other students who didn't seem surprised by the fact that no one from the gym was even around to open it minutes before the class was supposed to begin. Further, I quickly learned that the showers hadn't had hot water for over a week because of some problem with the restaurant next door. I would have hoped that Kyle would have had the courtesy to give me a heads up about this and suggested a later date in case this was an issue for me (he didn't). Overall, I can't judge anything about the classes because I ended up leaving. Not a great way to build a first (and last) impression. read more

People are passionate about jiu jitsu, and coaches are incredibly knowledgeable yet they are still very welcoming for beginners and most people are friends both in and out of the gym. Great place; I stopped in to train while in NYC for work. Josh is an excellent instructor -- from the one classes I added one transition to mount to my game. I joking refer to this a a bikram jiu jitsu school ... They keep the temperature high probably not at the 104 degrees of bikram yoga but in the high 90s I would assume. I dropped in on a noon no-gi class during a short vacation in NYC (I'm from LA) and couldn't have had a better experience! The head instructor, Josh, was super welcoming and everyone seemed genuinely happy to have me there. The facility is great: ample mat space and separate men & women's locker rooms with showers. I learned a cool sweep during class and then got in a bunch of fun, tough rolls. I'm 5' 3" and 100 lbs so I'm generally at a distinct size disadvantage with most other adults--everyone I rolled with was aware of their size relative to mine and didn't try to just smash me into the ground outright or pull off and arm or rip off my head. Trained here for over two years. What separates this school from others is the reason why I would recommend anyone who is new or on the fence about training BJJ to join. Beyond that, there is enough depth to the classes to ensure people from all experience levels gain something.
