So it's been a while since my previous kettlebell class but I finally dragged myself back to Manhattan and took a class. It made me realize I miss coming to classes and that I am getting out of shape. The facility still looks spotless and clean, lockers still work, and the staff is as friendly as ever. Class sizes have improved and it doesn't seem to be as crowded as it used to be. So the instructor was able to help me out when I forgot the sequence of workouts and made sure I was using the correct form. Still a great workout and would recommend it to anyone. read more

Anderson's used to have a genuinely gifted children's instructor who left during the lockdown. After that instructor left, they would rotate in senior students to teach the kids' class ("Little Dragons"), or one of the owners would cover the course. I don't want to embarrass anyone, but some of those instructors were good with kids, and others were strip-mall-dojo disciplinarians. Either way, the curriculum seemed to go away, and attendance dropped off. By the time we canceled, my twelve-year-old son would often be training with six-year-olds. Also, one out of every four visits, I would be locked out of the school fifteen minutes past the class start time, waiting for an instructor to show up and unlock the place. I started doing a BJJ class right after my kids. Instruction was uneven, but I stayed with it for a year because I had to be in the facility every Saturday. Still, I quit a few sessions after a senior student nearly snapped my windpipe, intentionally, because he didn't like the fact that I was locking him down in sparring. (He didn't mention anything before the incident, but, afterward, he said: "This is how it feels when you're not willing to submit" or something to that effect.) I'm an experienced martial artist who spent years studying other arts, and, while there are two sides to every story, my side is that this was deeply effed up. More objectively, the instructor of that class was a brown belt, and it was rare to see anyone higher than a purple belt in the class, which felt a bit "wild west." That is, I was practicing stuff in sparring that worked well with junior belts but would never work on an experienced practitioner. To close this out, back when they had a gifted children's instructor, they closed their doors during the lockdown. I kept supporting them even though my kids got no use out of the facility during that time because I cared for this business and wanted them to succeed. When I gave my notice, they said "bye" and zinged me with their massive cancellation fee. read more

I came here on a voucher for Kettlebell Kickboxing, which was completely new to me. After the first class, I wasn't sure if it was going to be the right workout for me, but I kept coming back, and now I LOVE it! The instructors, Laura & Colo, are truly amazing and sweet. They are both extremely skilled in this sport and really take the time to explain all exercises in detail for each round and go step-by-step through the proper form. Now, I try to come as regularly as I can, which is usually 2-3x per week! The only downside is that individual attention seems to be a little lacking. I'll go to class and notice that some students receive so much individual attention all class when I don't have the instructors approach me even once all class. If it's because I have good form, I guess that's good, but it would be nice to have an instructor come by to fine-tune my form and/or even help me figure out how I can challenge myself more in class. The facility is nice and spacious, although sometimes, I do wonder if they clean the floors/mats where we have class. Sometimes, I'll see lots of sweat drops and lots of dust and particles on the floor, and it makes me not want to lie down on the floor for some of our exercises. Hopefully though, they clean and sanitize the floors often. If you're looking for MMA classes, they offer a huge variety in MMA training. I haven't taken any of those myself, but these other classes do seem to be popular as well! read more

I can't say enough good things about Dan Anderson and his beautiful wife Dasha. I met Dan back in 1995 before he opened his first Anderson's Martial Arts in the 9th floor warehouse of a commercial building on East 32nd street in Manhattan. We were introduced by Brian, a mutual acquaintance, also a lunatic. Dan told me of his dream to open a Jeet Kune Do academy to perpetuate Bruce Lee's groundbreaking martial arts philosophy. I listened with one skeptical ear, because I've heard similar pipedreams before. Then he did it, renting out that 9th floor space and accumulating students and a reputation. Almost 30 years later Dan's vision has grown into the biggest Jeet Kune Do school on the East Coast and has diversified into teaching other MMA based martial arts. I began taking Muay Thai classes at Anderson's January 2016 and continued all the way until January 2019 when I moved away from NYC. During those 3 years I continued practicing at Anderson's because they made me feel welcomed and as if I was part of a family. They pushed me to the edge of my limits every night and helped me to progress over time. Not only was the physical training something that was great for me but also on most nights Sifu Dan was on hand to give us words of encouragement in throughout the classes and these were words that helped to push me forward even outside of the gym. In July 2019 I returned for a class while visiting NYC and I was welcomed with open arms which I truly appreciated. Anytime I am back in NYC I will make it a point to visit Anderson's and if you are lucky enough to live in NYC I totally recommend practicing at Anderson's. I was looking for a place to study Jeet Kune Do under the guidance of the Inosanto umbrella of schools and I found Andersons. I have been training here for 1 year and I recommend it to anyone from beginner to veteran. As a professional stunt performer with an interest in Kali this place has excelled my knowledge and understanding quite quickly with adaptable skills to the field of work I do. If you are unsure or would like a trial class they offer a 3 day all classes free deal which is unusual for most martial arts academies. I make it a point to welcome any new students warm and be welcoming because I know a new gym can be intimidating. I have been coming to andersons for over 5 years and it has been a crucial part of my mind / body training. I go to the gym and have tried other kick boxing acadamys (fighthouse, renzo, evolution,etc..) but andersons really is the best. It is the best value, it has the best teachers best training. Specifically I like the fact that their curriculum does a really good mix of pad work, drills, cardio and sparring. Few places get the right balance or even have all the options at all. This is much better than cross fit btw, because not only do you work out your cardio and body but you work out your mind in ways that cross fit or the gym never would engage. And to top it all off you learn self defense and self confidence. What are you going to do with cross fit experience in a life or death situation, burpee and mountain climb your way out? read more

Have you ever worked out SO hard, that you could taste the blood in your mouth? What about sweating SO hard within the first 10 minutes of the Total Body Scorcher Warm-Up, you cause the girl next to you to back it up, up, up UP away from your sweat pool? Well, you haven't tried Anderson's Martial Arts Academy. A few tips for those that are just experimenting and are totally intimidated: 1) Bring your own water; you're gonna need to re-hydrate ASAP! 2) Bring a towel; unless the girl next to you enjoys you sweating from your elbows. 3) Bring a lock and key; although not 100% necessary, it's just nice to have the option. 4) Eat like 2 hours before-hand or else I can almost guarantee you - you will throw everything up! This place is completely "no excuses" which was what I was told prior to class starting. Well, I had no excuses to jump, lunge, stretch, grunt, groan, sweat on repeat for a whole hour!! Bought a Groupon deal because my friend was teaching about this studio and linked me. I gotta say, I really didn't have high expectations because I'm a bit iffy when it comes to buying deals for gyms and spas. You never know what to expect, ya know? But Anderson's definitely exceeded my expectations. The instructors are really attentive. They want to make sure that you're doing the moves in the correct form. And people taking the classes are friendly with one another and motivate each other. Kettle bell kickboxing is a fun interactive group fitness class. No one belittles you. It's just all about transformation and change for the better. The studio is pretty neat and I give Anderson's a +1 for cleanliness. Staff is also really nice and enthusiastic (without being overbearing). Well definitely be coming back for more! read more

Great martial arts studio right near the R train. They have various classes available that last until an hour. I've only tried the Kettle Bell Kickboxing classes but they are excellent for strengthening your core and overall body if you put in the work. Run by Dasha and her team up in the main floor, classes can get full during after work hours so book a day ahead. I've definitely seen results and it is a hard workout. You will sweat if you put your hard work within that hour long session with weights and some cardio. Summer season anyone? Bring a water bottle. No need for a yoga mat as they provide that, although I recommend wiping them down if you're self conscious of other people' sweat getting on you as well. There are no shower rooms that I know of but they do have a locker room for women downstairs. Bring a lock if you need one. read more

Anderson's is the third martial arts school I've trained at. I have lost 30 pounds training here in the past couple of months. AMAA is a great and well rounded mma school. They teach a variety of martial arts including jiu jitsu, mma, jkd, kali, boxing and muay thai.They also have a women's jiu jitsu and kettle bell kickboxing class. The school is very clean and the staff is courteous and friendly. The large range of martial arts gives students a great variety to choose from. For some this can be overwhelming but I honestly feel it gives people a taste of everything thus exposing you to a larger world of martial arts. AMAA has pro and amatuer fighters. Which demonstrates that the instruction you receive is of high quality. I honestly feel Anderson's has been the most well rounded, no nonsense martial arts school I have been to with open minded program and commitment to martial arts unparalleled. I trained at AMAA for 2-3 years after graduating from college and trying to figure out what to do with my life. I was shy, lacking self confidence, a worrier, often anxious, and lacking a direction/purpose in life. While AMAA was not the magical cure to all those issues, I would say it was definitely the catalyst that gave me the boost I needed to embark on an amazing journey of self growth and change. I would say that this place was integral in building the self realization and confidence to embark on a career in the armed forces which I always dreamed of doing, but always doubted I was capable of. What I found at AMAA was a place where people of all colors and backgrounds come together to better themselves and support each other. On top of great training in all varieties of martial arts (stand up, ground, weapons, sport fighting, street fighting, etc) you will also find a great team, supportive atmosphere, and friends. Note that my review will focus on the disciplines I chose to specifically study, which are: Panantukan (Filipino Boxing) Filipino Kali (Stick Fighting) Jeet Kune Do Jeet Kune Do Street Fighting How I found out about AMAA - I first read about AMAA on a website, how to fight like Jason Bourne (Google It), which is run and maintained by a long time member of AMAA. Being a huge fan of the Bourne Trilogy, and concurrently being in the market for a martial arts dojo/academy, the timing was perfect. After visiting the location after work 2 weeks ago, asking a million questions, touring the facility and scheduling my free private lesson, I researched the hell out of this place before showing up for my tutorial. Free Intro Lesson and Signing Up My tutorial went off without a hitch. Gus' proficiency in all the disciplines I expressed interest in was impressive to say the least. My primary concern lay in the fact that this academy is regarded to the point where I hesitated on the basis that being an amateur, I would not fit in and would be more suited for something more universal like Krav Maga. Gus insisted this was not the case, and at that point, I made the decision to try it. Class Structure and First Impressions After warm ups (Various cardio and strength exercises), instructors demonstrate combos to be practiced with a partner. For my first class, Jeet Kune Do 1, my partner was a clearly experienced fighter (I am embarrassed to say I forgot her name, but she was really cool). She was patient and encouraging, insisting that I take my time and not get hung up on keeping up, but focus on form. When I went from wielding the boxing gloves to the practice pads, I was terrified she would clock me by accident, because she hit hard! However, she took the opportunity to teach me by offering ways to remember how to perform combos and other more specific strikes. She basically gave up her lesson to help me, and she is NOT an instructor. In my first Kali class, I had a better chance of hitting myself with the sticks than someone else, but again my partner took her time in showing me all the attack angles, the associated numbers and the combos we were practicing. Every one of the 5 sessions I attended last week was comparable to the two instances I explained above. I am particularly hard on myself when I can't do everything perfect right away, which was to the amusement of my partners, who insisted it was ok that they teach me, and that I take my time in learning. Class Content Not to sound like a dope, but search panantukan, jeet kune do, kali stick fighting, and open handed kali on youtube. There are self-defense applications to all the sessions I have taken so far, even though many of them focus on fundamentals like boxing to build a base. However, once they build up your fundamentals, they progress to self-defense/self-preservation tactics that are geared exclusively toward street fights. Instructors tailor individual comments to your particular skill level to ensure you are progressing properly, which is a valuable aspect of each session, and in my opinion, the most valuable part aside from practicing with a partner. Environment and Instructors Gus explained in my intro lesson that students and instructors who do not wish to work with newcomers are not welcome at AMAA. No offense to Gus, but I doubted this as a slight exaggeration on general principles. However, Gus was being perfectly honest as I came to find out. The instructors are not only proficient, but excellent teachers. They have multiple ways of breaking down combos, explaining the nuances of stances, strikes, blocks etc. That brings me to another point; the ratio of instructors to participants is more than satisfactory. Every session I have attended I have had instructors work with me personally to ensure I am acclimating properly and basically offer individual coaching. There are multiple instructors walking around, giving tips, and preparing the next set of combos. The sessions are organized and waste no time, every moment is instruction and practice. Price For my schedule, attending at least 5 times a week is not an issue. If you sign up for the unlimited session plan, which is $200 per month, it is the best value if you can go at least 20 times per month. Look at the class schedule they offer first, decide what sessions interest you, see how many you can realistically fit in and do a cost benefit analysis. Final Comments I joined AMAA to get fit, and to learn about a lifelong interest. What I got was a mixture of personal training, boot camp, skill development, private instruction, sparring partners and a great environment to meet people who share a similar passion and develop within the community aka AMAA. I purchased a Groupon for the kettle ball kickboxing class. I was really excited about my purchase, and committed to starting the classes as soon as possible in order to kick-start my health agenda. The only problem is that I can't seem to book a class! I'm waitlisted for classes through March; I've only been able to book a couple of classes at late/weekend times in March. Oh, and I've been able to book classes (not waitlist for classes, but, an actual class) starting in mid-May. A warning to all those that purchase a Groupon: don't purchase intending to take a class right away. Plan to sign up for classes 3-4 months out. Anderson's Martial Arts Academy is one of the most legit martial arts academies in NYC offering a wide range of trainings from Jeet Kune Do, Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu to Kali (weapon) as well as mixed martial arts and workout classes such as kettlebell kickboxing. The academy has 2 stories, the basement and the ground level (1st floor). The ground level has the simple gym equipments, a space for kettlebell kickboxing classes, a lounge and 2 bathrooms. The basement has 2 changing rooms, and a practice ground for different martial arts training. There is also a few bags (2 or 3...don't remember) in the basement for private lessons and personal practice. The martial art classes are more of a training style than a workout. A typical class is lead with music and would consist of a quick warmup followed by a series of partnering practice where one attacks and another defends. The class end with some stretches. The staff and students here are very friendly and respectful and contribute to more of an overall family vibe. The only downside I see is the cleanliness...the space does looks clean to the nake eyes however since the trainings are done barefoot, our feet always gets super dirty afterward so 1 star off on that. After I saw this deal thru Groupon. Kettlebell Kickboxing class? Sounds interesting, and it was a great deal!. (5 classes, each class is one hour workout). I underestimated my body... I can do better by Lifting a kettlebell and Cardio Kickboxing! (You have to PUSH yourself). One Trainer (Dasha Libin) and about 40 students (from Beginners to Regulars) Kettlebell weight starts from 12, 15, 20 lbs and so on. Make sure try the light one for first timers and then try to lift a heavier one. My Abs, and legs are looking better than it was before! Dasha is an awesome trainer, She tells you every little details where your body will be working out, results and pretty helpful. You can do this at home, but Is easier to have people doing the same routine with you (More competition and challenging). The only problem is that mixing levels in one class is not as effective (Unless you count your workouts yourself which is pretty hard). This is what happened to me when I took 5 classes (one class per week*) 1 WEEK: You will be in Pain (All over your body) 2 WEEK : Your body will be sore, but not painful 3 WEEK : You start feeling your body to be harder and Leaner 4 WEEK: Toning Up 5 WEEK: Lifting heavier weights, more sets, and more active. I would recommend this place. check out her site. They have a trial class for first timers, See if this fits you. The Location is very close to Chinatown (where the Canal street station is). The place looks pretty new, so is not dirty at all. They have lockers (make sure to bring your own lock). And comfy gym outfits. Bring a bottle of water and small tower (You'll be sweating a lot here). Membership is a tad high, but this is better than regular Gyms. They have other classes available (Check the site). Dasha's kettle-bell kickboxing class is amazing. She really whips you into shape! No pain no gain! I started taking her class to help me strengthen up for my triathlon and it worked! I had fatigue around my pelvic area and it was making it hard for me to run pass 2 miles and with the strength training that I did with Dasha's kettle-bell class it strengthen my whole body and took away the pain from running and also gave me a butt that even makes white boys want to shout! I strongly recommend her class. It's Fire and after 5 weeks your butt, arms and tummy will look amazing! (must do twice a week) The gym is not like Equinox or NYSC but it does the trick. No fancy locker rooms or shower and it smells of sweat, but not as bad as those men's boxing gyms, they do a pretty good job in not having a crazy smelly gym. The ladies locker room, is just a room where you can change and secure your items, you must bring your own lock. There are no showers so don't make plans to go out after. They have restrooms but that's it. Don't plan on refreshing up there. All in all if you are looking for a good workout this is the place, if your looking for a fancy gym with cute classes this is not the place! read more

I got an online deal for 1 month of unlimited classes here at Anderson's and I have to say that my overall experience is pretty good. I have to say the instruction was pretty good. A normal class starts off with warm up exercises and stretching (15 mins?) and is followed by the instructor showing you some drills. You partner up and go practice. While practicing the instructor(s) and senior students will walk around and help correct your form, answer any questions you have, etc etc. I've never got to work under Dan Anderson (he probably only teaches advanced levels) but the people that I did work with were very friendly and willing to help. Everyone says hi/hello to teach other when they walk by. Very friendly environment! I definitely didn't feel out casted even though I was obviously new. Pricing is pretty average for NYC standards. Ranges from $150 - 200+ depending on the type of program you pick. My only beef is that you have to sign a 1 year contract (I wish that had 3 and 6 months options) and that there are no showers. If my future becomes a bit more stable and I'm still in NYC I would definitely come back and sign up! read more

I'm not a gym person. I'm also not a work out person. Hell, I'm just not active, period. And then I found Anderson's. [cue angelic chords] My friend has been training here for six years now, so he knows how much has changed since "the good ol' days," but still loves it and trains daily. I'd been complaining for a while about various injuries and pains I'd been having, and even started going to a physical therapist recommended by Sifu Anderson himself (that's an entirely different review), but it kind of wasn't cutting it. I still needed to be more active. So I finally decided to join. I've been here since their once- or twice-a-year self-defense seminar in April or May of 2013, and already I'm so attached/addicted that I'm always so excited to leave work (and am near tears that I'll be in Europe without Anderson's to go to for the next couple years! ;A;) -- and with good reason, too! Every class kicks your ass in one way or another while still teaching you all the right life lessons -- and all the right save-a-life lessons, too. The Jeet Kune Do classes are the perfect blend of technique and power, Kettlebell Kickboxing is the best cardio you can ever ask for, Panantukan is fun even for non-boxing types, Kali classes are tons of fun (though I may be biased as a former swordsman), Streetfighting isn't for the weakhearted, and even the Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes have been calling to the touching-other-sweaty-people-ew-phobic me, though I haven't taken either yet. Simo Dasha pushes you hard with her KB classes, Blue pushes you harder, Alex even harder, and Jénel -- let's just say that I still haven't taken a class with Jénel, and as intimidated as I am, I can't wait for the day that I feel like I won't legitimately die in one of her classes, ha! It has got to be the best cardio I've ever done in my entire life -- which is saying a lot, considering my best single miles as a kid were in the 11-18 minute ranges -- and I wouldn't trade it for running on a treadmill for hours on end. And that's completely ignoring how amazing and uplifting all of the KB instructors are. Some people might be overly distracted by listening to Dasha cheering you on with personal anecdotes and repeatedly explaining why something is good, but I see her words as good mantras to keep in your head that also distract your body from the pain while you're holding plank for too long. (And really, if you didn't want some sort of feedback or teaching to go with your workout, go to a gym and exercise on your own. :/) As for the fourth floor, where all the heavy-hitting happens, Sifu Anderson and Sihings Chuck and Gus and Phil are all great in their arts; just watching them demonstrate is beyond mind-boggling. They're all brilliant guys who've been through a lot, so you know that much of what they're teaching you was probably learned the hard way. This means that they won't necessarily hold your hand the entire way through, because they mean business. Still, all of them are some of the coolest, nicest guys I've ever met. Work hard and they'll give you as much as you give them -- and then some. Some tips for classes in general: + If you're not sweating/groaning/shaking yet, push harder. + Don't be afraid to ask questions or for help. + Always tell your instructor if you have any pre-existing injuries or pains, and they'll be more than happy to give you exercise/stretching alternatives. + Slow is often better than fast; take your time. You'll get there. + When partnered up, don't be a limp noodle, but also don't be a solid rock. Give some resistance, but don't be a dick and refuse to let them do the move. + Always aim your strikes where you would intend to hit -- especially when partnered up. This will teach you the correct form AND give your partner the right angle to come in and work with you. + TL;DR: You can do better than that! As for the actual space, everything is pretty spartan, and locker rooms aren't going to be pretty and fancy and have every amenity like your poncy luxury gym. Knock before you open the door to give them a bit of warning, and then make sure you shut the door behind you always. Lockers don't come with locks, so bring your own if you're the paranoid type -- and can manage to get there early enough to grab a locker at all. Common sense and common courtesy are your best friends! All in all, Anderson's is worth every penny as long as you're willing to be the best you can be in every class. Not for the weakhearted, but we can fix that, too. ;D read more

How did I end up here? Kettle Bell Kickboxing. How did I know about Kettle Bell Kickboxing? Groupon. How did I know about Groupon...ok you get the point.... So, what this comes down to is that my only familiarity with the "Anderson's Martial Arts Academy" is just the physical space that is used for the Kettle Bell Kickboxing classes which is by now its own separate empire. No joke! Those are more suitable to fitness equivalents, however, rather than martial arts, but hey, whatever, I got my work out on. So back to the space. I like it! The front desk is very welcoming, you get your own key chain scanner key type thing for checking in which makes it way easy and fast. There is really one huge mirror room that holds all the equipment from what I could tell (and the bathrooms towards the end). The rest of the floor is really more like a hallway with a couple of coffee tables and chairs and vending machines. Not sure how this leisure time fits into the work out time, but it looks nice :). Since I cannot comment on the men's locker room (or I may be thrown out if I tried) I will describe the ladies one. It has some lockers, JUST BRING YOUR OWN LOCK! Some mirrors. Some benches. It gets a little crowded before/after classes, but everyone seems to be on the same mission, i.e. change as quickly as possible and go. So that's not too bad. Now on to Kettle Bell (or Kettlebell) Kickboxing: I have now had two out of the five groupon classes I purchased (back in January or so). It has taken me that long to take the classes mostly because it is IMPOSSIBLE to sign in to classes, they got filled so quickly you forgot to blink. I know they are trying to arrange/open some new slots (just recently added a 5:15pm Tuesday and Friday class) but guess what those got filled up quickly too. So your first couple of classes will be INTENSE. After a few swings with say a 12lb-er (I think its the orange one) you'll be wondering, how do these girls do this! Well they do, because they're girls and girls rule! Well, it becomes easier once you get used to it. I've met a bunch of women that have been coming here for over a year and enjoying it. My second biggest tiny peeve after the scheduling, is that I don't really get why there's even music. It's sort of in the background, although the instructor keeps turning the volume higher or lower as she/he is instructing, and everyone basically has their own rhythm of swings. But its not really a musical kind of workout, at least not to me. There is that much demand, or that much Groupons, or that many people with nothing else to do. I guess its really the demand that comes with excellent marketing. Kudos to Dasha, a very smart business woman. read more

Kettlebell Kickboxing is great for strengthening, toning, and feeling like a badass. Dasha is the most vigorous instructor, so I would recommend her classes for the best overall workout, but the other instructors are great/friendly too! The blessed/cursed Groupon deal was so popular that many of the classes are booked and I had to rake through the site for a few days to find open slots. But now that I've gone a handful of times, I have to say that the deal is actually a steal. $20 for 5 classes in a very clean, professional facility with awesome, encouraging instructors? Yeah, I'm a fan. Even if you work out regularly, the classes will challenge your body and leave you totally, wonderfully sore the next day. Be sure to go early to reserve a spot in the room and grab the kettlebells you want. You don't want to be stuck with the gazillion-pound kettlebell. After just a few sessions, my arms are more toned than they've ever been. Carrying groceries is no big deal. The classes are the right level of intensity and you never feel bored or listless. Just make sure to bring your own water (they only have vending machines). read more

Sifu Anderson is an amazing mentor that teaches you practical methods that you can apply in real life situations. No BS here. Be prepared to sweat and work at Anderson's Martial Arts Academy. Don't worry though, you'll love every second of this high-energy workout. I've only taken classes with Jenel so far, but I love her even though she is really intense. She will warm you up and then review with you the different moves that you'll go through, showing you different variations of the moves. Then it's go-time while Jenel walks around the room instructing and correcting proper form. It is much easier to get into the morning classes than it is to get into anything that is after 5:00pm, but if after 5:00pm is your only availability, then I suggest looking weeks ahead. I came in with a Groupon (5 classes for $25) and my only regret is not purchasing the 10-class deal instead. They were very easy to work with in terms of redeeming the classes and starting an account. read more

My OH started training here mid last year and was raving to me about a Kettlebell Kickboxing class that just started. Not being a very active person, I brushed it off... that is till he told me that there was a $20 groupon for 5 classes, which I should buy OR he would buy it for me.. LOL.. Taking the hint I bought the groupon, signed up for my 5 classes and I WAS HOOKED!!!!! Now I am a member and I try to take atleast 1-2 class with Dasha and 1 class with Jenel every week. The classes are challenging and they are not easy, but that's why I am always coming back for more. You will come out drenched and feeling good! Never was there a dull moment in class, all the instructors can keep each class fresh and exciting... it just gets me all pumped out thinking about it right now. Yes I see some comments saying how the locker room is small and that the place smells a little... but this IS a martial arts academy NOT a gym. Regardless, they keep this place REALLY clean and I am impressed.. Clean training space... friendly instructors... heart-pumping & top- A quality classes... can it get any better?! Typically I am VERY underwhelmed by most (97% give or take) group fitness classes (FYI... I am a fitness snob...so what!). In my experience many group fitness instructors take pride in how well they can torture you instead of how well they are able to transform your body. With that being said, I took my first KBK (Kettle Bell kickboxing) class last April with the creator of the method, Dasha and for the first time ever I fell in LOVE with fitness and have been religiously taken classes since. Is it possible for a work out to be fun, high energy and yet seriously challenging all at the same time? YES! This is exactly what Kettle Bell Kickboxing is all about. The method has completely transformed my body into a completely different being; its given me amazing definition,and it's even turned me into some what of an athlete (WHAT?! ME?!) Yea, that's right! All of the instructors are extremely knowledgeable and very accommodating. They take time in the beginning of each class to make sure every one is PROPERLY set up, and they also inquire about injuries. During workouts, they attend to newer students to ensure good form and at the end of classes they are always available for questions. They also provide valuable training information during your workouts- how to prevent over training, appropriate stretches, and how NOT to train . The workouts are always different and no matter how fit you are, you WILL be sore the next day and you WILL be challenged in ways you couldn't have possibly imagined! No matter how new you are to fitness, these women will make you feel like you are a bad ass totally capable of doing the impossible. I've trained at many places over the years, but Anderson's is the only place that has ever felt like home. I walked in to take a trial Muay Thai class a couple years ago. It absolutely kicked my ass in a way I had never experienced, and despite leaving exhausted and a bit bruised, I signed up on the spot. A year later, Anderson's invited me to join the fight team. I had my first Muay Thai fight 1.5 years into my training, which had been a lifelong goal that I finally achieved with the help of the incredible instructors, staff and students. Through the grueling 3-day WKA tournament the A-Team came together like a family, and the level of support and comraderie was unlike anything I'd ever experienced in any sport I've played over the years. Since then I've also begun training JKD and joined the school on a pretty great training camp in Japan. Anderson's is not only legit, but genuine too. I love love love these ladies that host the kettlebell kickboxing classes. I came across this place by chance through a coworker. I tried a few classes after purchasing a Groupon pack and has been hooked since then, The environment is very friendly, the studio is well maintained. I appreciate the fact that this place feels more like a community than a gym. No pushy or unapproachable trainers that make you feel bad about yourselve yet manage drain your wallet at the same time (hello NYSC trainers!). These ladies at AMAA are here to inspire and to motivate you. The Groupon deal was great but one has to sign up on line for each session. I now just get the regular sessions and three's no need for reservations. Pretty convenient. I do sometimes wish they had a branch uptown as I just recently moved. But hey, I also wish the sky rains hundred dollar bills. Can't have everything. read more

As a personal trainer and fitness enthusiast, I was stoked to check out the Kettlebell Kickboxing class, recommenced by a friend at Anderson Martial Arts Academy. In short? One of THE BEST workouts I have had in my life. No joke. Dasha, the creator and instructor of said class is fun, engaging, extremely knowledgeable (her grandfather taught kettlebells to the Russian Army!), and known to get you to crack a smile or chuckle through your grunts. She also incorporates her in-depth martial arts and self-defense training into the workout, bringing you moves that will not only sculpt you sexy, but also make your strong and smart. The studio itself is a beauty, despite its proximity to Chinatown. More than clean, it has a calming minimalist design, including a wall of quotes to inspire, and an area for private cardio or lifting in addition to the rooms for the renowned martial arts taught there on the above floor. Forget the gym with the rows and rows of ellipticals and treadmills. get to AMAA and get moving, get sexy, get strong. You won't regret it and you will guaranteed have WAY more fun doing it. read more

The entire venue is marvelous with top notch equipment and a renovated modern bathroom with showers and lockers. I took a kettlebell kickboxing class and left a little disappointed. There was a new instructor filling in, and she seemed to lack knowledge on what she was trying to show us. Thank goodness this was just a trial period with a Groupon. read more

I've been coming here for about 5 years. It's definitely one of the best places to learn martial arts as it has something for everyone. I first started taking the kettlebell kickboxing classes and eventually started learning martial arts. They offer all types of arts and some great instruction. Everyone who teaches are either fighters or have spent many years training so you can trust that youre learning correct technique and form. Beyond that, the group of people you train with and eventually become friends with are really the best. Whether you're looking to train for interest, self defense or to get a workout in, you'll be able to find what you need here. Staff is the best and the gym is clean. Do bring wipes though because there are no showers. read more

This is a great place to train. Sifu Anderson takes great care in structuring a program that delivers on its promise to make you a better fighter and get you in great shape at the same time. I was in reasonable shape before, but 7 months of training at Anderson's have knocked off that stubborn last bit of belly fat I had, and my cardio has never been better. The program can feel pretty fast-paced at first, but with some honest work it's pretty easy to get the hang of it. The best part about the program is that Sifu is constantly fine tuning it to make sure it's as tailored to the students as possible. In class, the instructors pay very close attention to your form and if you feel like you're not getting it, or if they missed you on a walk around, you can always just raise your hand and they'll come over and answer whatever questions you have. If you're looking for a martial arts gym where you can chat and socialize while you train, this is not the place for you. We work very hard here and everyone is focused about their training. That said, just about everyone that I've run across here is very nice. I have made new friends and it's extremely rare to encounter anyone with an ego or an attitude problem. In response to a couple of rogue comments on this board accusing Sifu of playing favorites, don't buy them, because they're bullshit. My curriculum is primarily with other instructors since I'm still developing my basics, but I'm always psyched when Sifu teaches class. He really is a gifted teacher who knows how to explain things clearly as well as inspire you to work as hard as you can. He takes time with everyone, without exception. Whether it's Jeet Kune Do, Kali, Muay Thai or Jiu-Jitsu, I plan on training here as often as I possibly can. read more

It actually is an academy. There are the core Jeet Kune Do classes, which teach everything: weapons, kickboxing, boxing, and close-quarters fighting. Then there are specialized classes in each of those individual subjects. It is rare to find such a breadth of knowledge so well-integrated. The teaching is as good as any I have seen, and I have been training a long time now. I should mention the kettlebell classes. I steered clear of them for a while, out of fear of looking foolish in front of pretty young women. Eventually I saw some students I admire taking them and tried them out. I recommend them. The martial arts teachers can't completely exhaust you, because they have to be able to teach you. The exercise teachers can. read more

I got my hands on a copy of the Kettlebell Kickboxing (simply KB, for those of us who live & love it) Scorcher Series DVDs late last year and after a few months of "practice" (i.e. I could get through the warm up), I took my first KB class at Anderson's Martial Arts in January. Immediately, I was hooked. Dasha and her staff of KB instructors are an amazingly motivating group of women. They will draw things out of you that you didn't think possible. Make no mistake, the classes are challenging and they make no apologies for it but they're in it with you every step of the way, imparting knowledge, enthusiasm, encouragement and, when necessary, providing modifications. When all is said and done, you'll walk out of the room drenched and spent but amazed at what you're capable of. And the next time you hit the training floor, you'll see AND FEEL the results of your hard work as you sprawl faster, swing heavier, kick higher and punch harder... and walk out just a liiiiiiittle bit less winded than the last time. I had been looking for the perfect martial arts school for four years when I stumbled into Anderson's. TLDR; I signed up immediately, without even taking the free one-on-one session. This place is the real deal. If you want to train hard and take a serious, respectful approach to martial arts while having a great time with a kickass community, this is the place. From day one the instructors at Anderson's were welcoming and patient with my never-done-anything-like-this-before questions, and thanks to them I've been learning quickly. Within weeks of signing up, I bumped up my membership so I could train more in Jeet Kune Do and in the other styles Anderson's offers. It's clear that everyone at Anderson's takes both the physical and mental aspects of training seriously, but there's also always room for laughter and fun. This place is definitely home to a supportive community, and even when you're an intimidated newbie you'll feel like you're part of the family. It's easy to get hooked on training here - even as a white belt with absolutely no experience I was encouraged from day one to push myself and be the best I could be. It's a good place to learn. The people here are friendly. The only downside is the smell. Granted, I only went for a free trial session, the smell was unbearable. We had to use the communal gloves, which left my hands smelling horribly. I had to wash my hands 4 times and sanitize my hands 3 times. If you do go, do buy your own gloves.
