Hearts and Halos

Hearts and Halos is a veterinarian company that offers home pet euthanasia services. My husband and…read moreI decided to use them to help us put our beloved little girl, Muffin, down last month. We had the pleasure of Dr. Susan Chao come out to our home on Friday, March 20. We had a 9 am appointment (the first one of the day) and she arrived a little before. She had called me about 15 minutes prior to let me know that she would be arriving within 15 minutes. When she arrived, my husband and I greeted her and had her walk to our backyard, as this was the place I had wanted for our little girl because she loved being in the backyard to sunbathe. Dr. Chao was wonderful at guiding us through the process, explaining every step of the way and allowing us to take our time to say goodbye to Muffin. She also allowed us to give Muffin treats during the process (Muffin's last meal was a chicken nugget from Burger King and pureed chicken that Dr. Chao brought, which Muffin really did enjoy eating). Dr. Chao also did cut a piece of Muffin's fur for us to keep and placed it in a small plastic box, which she put in a small mesh bag and gave it to us as a keepsake. Muffin passed away on March 20, 9:31 am. Dr. Chao gave us some time to spend with Muffin right after and just walked towards the side of the house so that we could have privacy. Afterwards, she placed Muffin in a basket and then we walked with her towards the front of the home so that she could take Muffin with her to eventually be cremated. About two weeks later, I contacted Hearts and Halos to ask if Muffin's ashes were ready for us to pick up (please note that the company can also mail your pet's ashes to you, but we just preferred to pick it up in person). I had a hard time getting ahold of them via telephone, so I emailed the company and was able to arrange for a pickup time. I was told via email that someone was supposed to contact us that day that I had emailed them about Muffin's ashes though... This past Thursday, my husband and I went to Gardena to pick up Muffin's ashes (please note that Hearts and Halos office is now in transition to moving to Hungtinton Beach). When we arrived, an employee came out and gave us a small gift bag, that held her ashes, seeds to plant in her memory and also a small brochure regarding aftercare and additional resources for the grieving process. I do like the box that her ashes came in and also I love the small wooden heart with her name engraved on it and a small halo right above her name. The total cost for these services is $840 (you can pay via check, cash or credit card). You can also have additional items, such as an urn (which cost $60) or your pet's paw print, that will cost extra. If you do not wish to have your pet's ashes back, the cost would go down to $675, in which your pet will be part of a communal process to preserve their ashes and then will be scattered in the company's memory garden. Just as a price comparison, when we had to put down our other 2 dogs at the vet (both of our other dogs were of an emergent case and so we would not have been able to plan for their euthanasian earlier and so we would not have been able to utilize these home euthanasia services even if we had known about them at the time), at minimum, it would have cost $455 if we had made an appointment and had this service done during the day. However, both times we had to rush our dogs to the vet were during after hours and without an appointment, so the cost was around $560, which also did include their ashes. So, these home pet euthanasia services can cost an additional $100- $300 more but we felt it was worth the cost. We did not have to rush and deal with the stress and anxiety of the car ride from our home to the vet and also sit in the waiting room while they prep our dog and then say goodbye to them in the vet's office (where both of our dogs really hated going to the vet). The ability to allow Muffin to be in the comfort of her own home and to have foods that she enjoyed during the process was worth it for us. I highly recommend home pet euthanasia at home if you can afford it. I like to think that this was the much better choice for Muffin and hope that she was happy with her chicken treats right before she left us, keeping her in good spirits than to be stressed and anxious if we had chosen to bring her to the veterinarian instead. Thank you Hearts and Halos for helping us during this process.

Saying goodbye to my beloved kitty was something I had been dreading, especially because she was very skittish and easily stressed, but Dr. Denise made the entire experience as peaceful and gentle as it could possibly be. Her suggestions (like adjusting the environment and approach to minimize stress) made such a difference and helped my cat feel more at ease during the transition. Her assistant was equally kind and thoughtful, offering quiet support and handling everything with such sensitivity and respect. Together, they created a space that felt calm, dignified, and full of care. This is an incredibly difficult decision for any pet parent, but I am so grateful I had Dr. Denise to guide us through it. Thank you for helping my sweet girl pass with peace and love.

Ariel was God sent to me. The way Ariel memorialized my little sassy girl Cutie was more than I could ever imagined! Ariel engraved all four of her paw prints in a heart shaped terracotta stone along with her tail which gave it that extra special unique touch. The ability to feel her feet and hands by tracing my fingers along each anatomical groove brings a smile to my face. Cutie would often times take her front paw and wrap it around my finger and now I can replicate that feeling over and over thanks to you Ariel. Ariel inked my Cutie's paws, nose and whiskers too! When I saw the prints it brought me back to when I use to touch her nose and she would look at me and I could just feel her smiling at me with her eyes. Ariel made me a special ink design with Cutie's tail curved forming a half heart with her back paw in the middle. I don't have tattoos but if I were to ever get one this would be perfect! Ariel created so many personal touches for Cutie's send off to heaven that she had me crying tears of joy. I'm confident in saying my little sassy girl Cutie knew she was so loved not only here on earth but in heaven. Cutie is looking down from heaven and is saying thank you Mommy for being there for me-I love you! and I love you too!! Thank you Ariel for your artistic abilities and most importantly for the compassion you have for animals. I'm so grateful for what you've done and I value you! -Marisol V.

The ashes came in a beautiful box wrapped in cloth and came with a paw print and dedication. Today, Brian picked up our other dog from our house, and he was so professional and sweet. He hugged my husband after he placed Richie in the container he had brought for transport. We look forward to receiving his ashes back in a few weeks with a paw print and dedication as well. Jenny was great on the phone as well, super sweet during the intake. $295 cost for cremation and pick up from our place. With a dedication and paw print, and special box. He is a small dog 9lbs. I will use them for any future pet.

This is in response to the owner Jenny in regards to my original review and for the public so that…read morethey can be more informed: Jenny basically runs a 3rd party delivery service for pet haven. Even the name "royal pet mortuary" is deceptive because it is not a mortuary. All she does is take your phone calls and then arranges delivery to a crematorium for her extra fee. The real crematorium had their own delivery drivers typically for free. What Jenny does is add her fee and tell you that "she will take care of everything" in reality it is because of these 3rd party drivers that sometimes mistakes are made and the wrong pet ashes are returned among many other errors ( see pet haven reviews) You will be much better off contacting a real crematorium directly and making arrangements with them. Unfortunately there are many services like Jenny's that pretend to be "compassionate cremation services" and are simply delivery drivers and they charge a huge fee that isn't necessary on top of trying to sell you other keepsakes that the real crematoriums offer for much less. Also, there is no shortage of real crematoriums around Los Angeles and other areas. I am writing all this because I love my animal and hate the idea that there are people who take advantage of grieving pet parents. Her listed address is not a real location and there is zero regulation in this industry so if she made a mistake with your pet there would be almost no recourse. Especially is you don't even know where she is. Please be careful and do your research. There are many other predatory "services" like hers who will fake sympathy on the phone with you so that they can take your money. I highly recommend you call a real crematorium and ask for what is called a "witness cremation" to ensure that you get your own pets ashes back. They cost a bit more but well worth the peace of mind and you will be saving money by not having someone else drive the pet there and deliver ashes back to you which can take weeks or months instead of one day. I understand there may be people who don't want to deal with any arrangements for your deceased pet because of the inconvenience but your pet deserves better. I also recommend you read the reviews because sone of these places lack the ethics and have no compassion because they are huge corporations driven by profits only. It took me a whole week to learn this information and so now I'm sharing it here. Sending love and prayers to anyone who lost their beloved pet!
