From the moment I made that difficult call and spoke with sweet Sherry (sp?) who was so very helpful, then my comforting talk with Dr. Shea, who was so wonderful and understanding, and above all completely honest with my Stella's overall condition, I couldn't have made this choice without her, I was completely lost and inconsolable. Dr. Shea was my guide in my time of need. When the final day came, Dr. Erica came to our home. She is this beautiful angel, with the most kind and gentle voice. She helped us walk our precious Stella over the Rainbow bridge in the beauty of silence, reverence, and peace, it was so beautiful. We called again around 3.5 weeks and they said a few more days. At 4 weeks we received an email saying our boy was ready and we went to go pick him up. It was quite stressful calling in over those two weeks of delay to figure out if and when my dog's ashes would be ready. A proactive message from their side would've made the experience a lot better as we needed to keep calling in to figure out what was happening while also grieving. I needed a veterinarian to come to the house and perform the euthanasia procedure because one my dog could not walk anymore as her cancer progressed and made her Nala's legs had become very weak. She was a large dog, in a lot of pain, and I simply couldn't carry her to the car. On top of that, I couldn't find anyone who offered at-home euthanasia at a price that fit my budget. Scheduling the appointment with Honor Pet was incredibly easy. Their website was straightforward and user-friendly, and I was able to make an appointment the day before. I also appreciated that they accepted my Affirm card (as long as you have a physical or digital Affirm card). On the day of the appointment, Dr. Scott Cox kept me updated on his arrival time. He first gave me an estimate of 11:00-11:30 a.m., and as he got closer, he narrowed it down to 11:15-11:20 a.m., which I really appreciated. When he arrived, he removed his shoes before coming inside and greeted us in a calm, respectful, and compassionate manner. You might expect someone who performs this procedure regularly to become emotionally distant, but that couldn't have been further from the truth. I'd never heard of water cremation (alkaline hydrolysis) until now. The use of water in the cremation process sounds counterintuitive, and so perhaps is the thinking that it's more ecologically responsible. But the research I'm doing on that seems to verify that this is the case. Californians are rightly concerned about water conservation, so not everyone will agree that this is really the way to go en masse here, but in weighing the factors, I felt good about it. The cost compares to standard flame cremation, and in fact, I found out that my cost with Honor Pet was less than a friend recently paid for a deceased pet's standard cremation. The remains can be shipped to you or you can retrieve them at the DTLA facility. Shipping cremated remains mandates certain regulatory fees, and we opted for pick-up.
