I really, really wanted to like this place. As my husband and I have both enjoyed German food abroad, we were excited to try the menu for this restaurant. When we went on a Friday night, there was live music on the biergarten's patio, but it was so loud that even indoors, you could not hear your conversation. Upon arrival, even though we had a reservation, and there were only four other tables dining, service was pretty slow to be seated and the poor waitresses seemed overwhelmed. I will say the waitstaff is exceptionally friendly, even with a busier biergarten. The food, I'm sorry to say, leaves much to be desired. Presentation is unappetizing, and as some other Yelpers have mentioned, the meal is definitely not a feast for the eyes. I wish I could say the flavor was better, but everything was bland and underseasoned. My husband, who's never met a sauerkraut he didn't adore, could not even finish his meal. The portions are small for the price, but honestly, the flavor was so underwhelming it didn't matter how much was on the plate. The decor seems very throwback, replete with tourist tchotchkes and and faded pictures of Germany. The food is great. German Food is hard to come by, and this is much closer than the Rathskellar Downtown, or Heidelberg House in Lawrence. I typically get the Sausage Trio, which provides a good variety to sample. One suggestion is to call before you come, since it is a smaller restaurant and may be busy during the buffet, or may close early because it is slow. read more

Wow!! What delicious food they have here!!! This restaurant is located within the German American Klub off Meridian Street. You don't have to be a member to eat here. You will be transported to Germany coming into this place. The Rueben I ordered was so good!!! It had the perfect amount of everything. It wasn't dry at all! I would order that again. I loved the potato pancakes they had. They were so crisp and light and delicious. I liked the sauerkraut also. We were there for a Krapfen making class with the German American Klub upstairs that night. They have a lot of fun events coming up so maybe check them out! read more

It's been a while from my last visit. Don't live as close, but October fest is coming up soon and would like to join the festival.

We drove the 30 miles from Fishers with another couple to revisit this authentic German eatery. It is a private Klub but welcomes the public. Wednesday offers a buffet as well as the regular menu. I chose the buffet to sample a variety of offerings while the others made selections from the menu. Uniquely, the buffet is manned by the chef who plates the food for you. I tried Buttered Noodles with very flavorful Hungarian Goulash; Pork Schnitzel with a freshly made mushroom sauce; Sausages & Kraut; Perfectly prepared Green Beans; a saucy Chicken Pot Pie; and German Potato Salad which was good but not as piquant as my Mom's. Others raved about the German pretzel, Noodles, Kraut Balls. We all shared an Apple Strudel that was the of the show. Great service, excellent selection of Old World dishes and, of course, good German Dunkel on tap. The only negatives were a rather poor wine selection - but then, I'm a wine bigot, and the Schnitzel on the buffet was a bit dry - more like a too thin fritter - and that is likely attributable to being batch cooked and kept warm on the steam table. I was sitting at home and got a craving for some German food. I came across this restaurant, which I have passed for years and did not know it. This restaurant is deep in the cut, as they would say. Or off the beaten path. They have a huge private lot and a Biergarten/patio in the back as well. I got there at 5PM, as soon as they opened and it was very slow. There was a sign that directed take out and pick up to the back of the restaurant. However, I ended up going in the front door and down the stairs to the restaurant and it was fine. The woman that took my order was very friendly and helpful. She told me about the restaurant and some of their events like their Valentine's Day diner and their Wednesday night buffet. They also have a full bar in the restaurant. Their menu is packed with some delicious German food. I went with the Reuben sandwich with a side of stewed apples and red cabbage. It was delicious. You get a ton of food and I was genuinely sad when it was gone. The woman gave me their number and told me that I could call me order ahead next time. Which I will probably end up doing, unless I have time to dine in. I cannot wait to go back. I will definitely be spending some Octoberfest time here, but surely will be back there a few times before then. I highly recommend this spot I am sure you will enjoy it. read more

I had been wanting to come to this place really bad since I got back from Germany. I decided to go for it and make the trip down to the south side to try the place out. It did not disappoint! They had a very cozy Biergarten and on the day that we were there, they even had a polka band playing. The food was delish with their meat sourced locally and beers from Germany. The potato pancakes were definitely the highlight of the meal perfectly crispy and savory. The service was excellent with the staff helpful in explaining the menu. This place is amazing. Talk about taking yourself back in time for a minute you feel like you are in Germany. They open at 5pm for dinner only. You drive down this dark road, and you would never know there was a parking lot and a restaurant from the top of the road. You go inside from the parking lot on a top level, down a flight of stairs is the restaurant. They do have an elevator for handicap. Once below it's amazing. It's small probably about 30 tables, wooden walls, and all decorated with Germany memorabilia. I was so excited to try this place the last time I had German food was in Germany 20 plus years ago. I still remember what that tasted like. There was 2 waitress serving and taking orders. Lisa was our waitress. She is such a nice lady, and definitely knows her menu, and has worked their for a long time. I ordered the German beer on tap it was very light, clear, and refreshing. My other half Bayrischer Schweinebraten it was a tender slow roasted pork shoulder. I tasted the dish and it was amazing. Very tender and with lots of flavor. It was not sliced it was more like chunk pork. His side was the sliced apples. I have never tried apples sliced fresh, in a cinnamon sauce. I wish you could order this by the pint or quart to take home. Amazing! I ordered Jägerschnitzel which was delicious with the cream white wine sauce, and mushroom. The sauce was so good I asked for a little more sauce. The pork meat was tender, and a nice slice. My sides was potato pancakes oh my goodness hold the fork these were not greasy at all. I put the sour cream and applesauce on the potato cakes. My other side I was wanting to try was the German potato salad. It was good, completely traditional, but not my favorite for my taste buds. Before dinner you have a choice of soup or salad. I definitely tried the soup which was really good the traditional red cabbage soup. I can't wait to come back to try more dishes. For dessert if you have room definitely order the bread pudding with the warm whiskey sauce. You will want to make room for this dessert. We were getting ready to leave, they were closing, and they were so nice they make everything fresh daily, and had extra apple and cherry turnovers. I had taken home 1 of each. It took awhile to be seated. There was an event going on above the restaurant. We had to ask for menus. It did take awhile to order, get our meals, and pay. Overall it was like 2 hours, which was longer than expected. There were people going outside to the patio constantly, which was disruptive as it was cold outside. The food was good. Come here for the beer. The beer selection is great and there is authentic German beer on draft, which is hard to find. They also have a big selection of bottled beer. Let me just explain that I am a German import, so my judgement of German food is probably quite a bit harsher than most folks. That said I found the food bland and quite, shall we say, Americanized. The Wednesday buffet is a pretty good bargain. Actually the prizes here are not bad. I had the Sauerbraten with Spaetzle. The braten was cut in very thin slices... It's a roast not a sandwich topping, please slice accordingly. The meat was fairly dry, but that is quite common with that dish, for that you have the gravy that comes with it. Unfortunately instead of the savory gravy with just a hint of tanginess, it was served with a sour concoction that in looks mimicked the real thing, but sorely disappointed upon hitting my taste buds. The Spaetzle themselves were really good, but they were topped with some kind of whitish pork gravy... Hmmm, not sure what that was supposed to be, I have never eaten such a thing in my Germany, but who knows, it may be a family or regional thing. All in all the food is not bad, all of my American friends enjoyed it, including the desserts. Just don't take your German folks there. The highlight of my visit (aside from the beer) were the placemats with German phrases on it. I thoroughly enjoyed making everybody try to read those out loud. Homemade german style soft pretzels as big as your head! If I could sum up the Edelweiss Restaurant in one sentance, that would be my review. The preztel appetizer, as we learned, depends on the size of your party, and is both soft, yummy, and giant! Served with cheese and mustard as dipping choices. Make sure you come to Edelweiss Restaurant hungry, because the platters come with both the main dish (mostly meat-eater friendly), and two sides. Sides include salad bar, potato pancakes, spaetzel, potato salad, stewed apples, and more! I enjoyed the potato pancakes while my companion thought the spaetzel was top notch. Cozy atmosphere, great food, and great local restaurant choice for Indy's southside! After driving past the restaurant daily for almost a year and a half, I finally tried Edelweiss and will be making a return trip very soon. read more

Edelweiss is definitely a great restaurant! My wife and I love everything about this place. The food is excellent, and the service is great. We love the atmosphere and the German music playing overhead. While you wait for your meal, you can even learn German phrases from the place mats on your table. My favorite entree is the Bayrischer Schweinebraten (tender, slow-roasted pork shoulder) with sauerkraut and German potato salad as my two sides. I like to get their Haus soup with my meal. For dessert I love getting their German chocolate cake, it's the best I've ever had! If you decide to eat dinner here, just look for the German Park sign on Meridian Street since the restaurant can't be seen from the street. read more

Decided to check this place out after hearing about their German buffets and a great deal on Groupon. They have really friendly service and the place is quite the hoot to look around. Definitely has that old-man social club feel. But I'm OK with that. I like it. The dining room is actually smaller than I expected, but I was surprised to find that they have a large deck for summertime beer drinking. The inside is non-smoking, but the owner mentioned that you could smoke outdoors in the biergarten, which would be great for cigar nights! Their tap selection is a bit limited, but they try to always have at least one German beer on tap. They have a nice selection of bottles to choose from. Note that to drink, you'll need to be a member. Limitation of their license. They get their sausages from Claus' German Sausages and Meats in Fountain Square. How about that for local! Love the sausages, the red cabbage, the potato cakes, and the pretzel is a MUST order. I've been twice now and will definitely be back. It gets pretty crowded for the Wednesday night buffets and on Friday/Saturdays. Try going on Tuesday or Thursday. read more

So fun! Dave and I had a groupon so we came here...probably never would have heard of the place otherwise. The atmosphere is a lot like an elks lodge or vfw. I get the feeling most everyone knows everyone. There was an awesome accordian player while we were there. You get A TON of food. For an appetizer, we got the largest pretzel I've ever seen. The cheese sauce was so good (light and fluffy) that I contemplated eating it with a spoon. One draw back, which I think is fairly common with German food, is that there aren't really any meatless options. I'm not a vegetarian, but I'm not a big meat eater. I went with the Bayerischer Scweinebraten, saukraut, and spatzle. I had the choice of soup or salad and mistakenly chose salad. What you get for a salad is a build-your-own of canned fruit, romaine mix, shredded cheese, and pickled beets. There was a macaroni salad and something else that I don't remember right now. Dave ordered a soup (potato leek) and it was fabulous. Definitely should have ordered that. My entree was great. The spaetzle was wonderfully buttery, the sauerkraut tasted like home, and the pork was so juicy and tender. Dave ordered the trio, which was three enormous sausages. I'm not a sausage fan, but he said they were good. His sides were stewed apples and the ABSOLUTE BEST POTATO PANCAKES I have ever tasted. No joke. The stewed apples were okay...mostly just seemed like pie filling..very sweet. This place was a great deal, too. Before applying the groupon, our meal was $48 (everything I've mentioned plus iced tea and two beers) Tastier, cheaper, and much better service than the Rathskeller. read more

My husband and I had the best date night this evening at the Edelweiss Restaurant. We were both very hungry this evening and I was in the mood to try something different. I had passed German Park many times, but had never gone to the restaurant until tonight. It was wonderful! We each had one of their beer specials and were served soup. My house cabbage soup was warm, flavorful and the perfect start to a delicious meal. We were then served our FREE pretzel (thanks to the SUPER Passport provided by the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce). I am a bread lover and a pretzel lover. I never knew the two could be so closely linked in such a wonderful union until tonight. This was the best pretzel ever. I don't know if I can ever eat a pre-frozen one again. I would have gladly just had this and the soup and been a happy girl. Next time that is what I will do, as a matter of fact. We both ordered two of the specials. I had the Shepard's pie, and he had the ham loaf. I liked mine best, he liked his best. Why is it that almost NEVER happens? The dinners came with two sides. We each had the spaetzle. I also had a very good sauerkraut. He raved on and on about the German potato salad. I ended up bringing most of my dinner home. I was so stuffed after the pretzel. This was not the white linen draped elegance of the Rathskeller kind of German restaurant. This was the cozy bar kind of place housed below the upper ballroom available for party rentals. There were families, and couples, and groups of senior citizens. The chef was chatting it up with a couple at the bar, and at one time a really neat elderly gentleman played his harmonica for a few short tunes. We had a wonderful time and will return. read more

We went last weekend, nice about 15 tables downstairs in dining room. good service and selection. Loved the red cabbage, the spaetzle was not as good, kinda like mashed potatoes. (guessing not fresh that day). I would go back and the combo sausage, pork chop dinner looked great. Dunkel beer was nice! a bit out of the way, but near the greenwood area and in summer the patio will be a nice place to eat and visit. Having just returned from a trip to Europe, including Munich and Stuttgart, I was eager to try Edelweiss. I wish I could give it a 5-star review...the grounds are quite nice, the restaurant is kitschy in a cute way (think Heidelberg Haus on the East side), great beer selection, outdoor seating...but the food was disappointing. We ordered the pretzel appetizer but instead of the gigantic Bavarian pretzels I saw pictures of here on Yelp, we got the small, soft variety you get at the freezer section of the grocery store. They did not look or taste like German pretzels whatsoever. The three sausages - from Claus, the German butcher's shop - were good, but the sides, red cabbage (dripping from oil and sugar) and sauteed mushroom (out of a can) added more disappointment...One more thing. If you buy the Groupon, you do get a membership, which means reduced member price for food - what they don't tell you is that you can only apply that at future visits. I would like to give Edelweiss another try - maybe at Oktoberfest - and hopefully have a bit better luck next time with the food selection. read more

We went here with high hopes of finding a more genuine German restaurant, but unfortunately, did not find what we were looking for. The restaurant & building are super cute! And decorated in vintage German artifacts! However, the service was similar to that of a diner and the food matched that. The food tasted very cheap, like fast food, and was pretty opposite of German food. The only thing I liked besides the restaurant decor & placemats was the bread appetizer they provide while you wait and the beer selection. (They have a nice list of German beers.) On top of the sad food options, it was expensive. For two people with a beer each, it was about $50. That's a lot for cheap food. We probably will not return, but at least we tried it! Edelweiss is an interesting spot. Décor and ambience is definitely lacking; it's a sort of clubhouse for the German Klub of Indianapolis. But the food is really authentic. And the beer, or bier, selection is pretty great. I got the Haus Grill, with bratwurst, knackwurst, and kassler rippchen (which I think is basically a pork chop) and was not disappointed. I also got an Ayinger Jarhundert Lager, which was huge and fantastic with the heavy German sausages. The food was great, albeit displayed poorly (think school cafeteria with roughly Germanic dressings on the wall), and it was on the expensive side for non-members. But all in all I'm well pleased. 8/10 would come back, especially with my German friends. read more
