The sides were good, but not as good as the meat. Mustard-based tater salad was of the mashed rather than chunky variety. Good mustard flavor, but I prefer chunky tater salad. Never had fried cabbage before, but this was very good with lots of bacon in it. I'd definitely order it again. Pleasant although primitive atmosphere at this joint. It's located in an ancient gas station/auto repair building and they haven't done anything to fix it up. But it absolutely fits with the food they serve. BBQ ain't alta cucina and in some ways the more rude the setting, the more appropriate it is. At any rate, they played good music--CCR, Fleetwood Mac, America, Dion and the Belmonts, etc. Bottom line, as long as joints as good as Pitforks and Smokerings and The Shack are open in the Lubbock area, I don't see any reason to be bothering with the lines and lack of seating at Evie Mae's. These are the local joints that are getting my cue money for the foreseeable future.

All the staff was very welcoming and friendly and answered all our "first time here" questions. Between my 1/2 rack of ribs, a chopped BBQ sandwich, a monster baked potato with brisket and a two meat - ribs and brisket plate, no one left hungry including the two-year old granddaughter who chowed down on the mac n cheese. Food was outstanding - well seasoned, right temperatures, and a great selection of sides. Prices were reasonable and there was plenty of seating. Will certainly stop by again if we are in the neighborhood at meal time.

As I've been fortunate enough to try several restaurants for the first time in the last few months, I wanted to take time to get them all their due. Powell's Country BBQ was a unique experience that you can't really get anywhere else. First, the food was, unfortunately, not my favorite barbecue. It was mesquite-smoked, which is a huge plus to me, but in retrospect, I would have probably ordered the sauce on the side. I do appreciate that the owner does everything himself including make the sauce. The prices were extremely reasonable. What made this place special was the experience. You truly feel like you're eating barbecue prepared by one of your neighbors, and truthfully, that's what you're doing. The modest building was filled with mementos from the owner's fascinating life. There were no other customers, so once he served the food, the owner sat and chatted with us. I rather enjoyed getting to know him, and I loved hearing about all of his experiences. Take cash, as he does not accept cards, but I appreciate that Mr. Powell allowed me to run down the street to an ATM and return with cash. Apparently this is common, and Mr. Powell said he had only had one customer fail to return. If you take advantage of this wonderful gentleman, I have no place in my heart for you.
