We had a romantic evening dinner with an ocean view, celebrating my husband's latest accomplishment. Our server was Shannon, she was absolutely amazing. Very articulate and thorough explaining the menu items. Great smile, and welcoming personality. We ordered the yellowtail sashimi which was my favorite. The burrata and the goat cheese salad were also delicious. The Hong Kong style Sea Bass was another favorite for me. My husband ordered the rib eye steak which he enjoyed with the lobster mashed potatoes. We finished with the banana dessert which was one of the best desserts we've ever had. The only thing that was a little less than pleasant was the stuffy musty temperature of the dining room. We sat by the window that was towards the back of the restaurant. When you first walk into the restaurant you can feel the air conditioning, but as you make your way towards the back it gets warmer and had a bit of a smell to it. I realize we are right next to the ocean where there are many animals, but I do feel that the air conditioning should be cranked up higher to make it more comfortable and fresh in the dining room. Granted, we did go on a day that had 98° weather. I'm sure they don't have that problem on a cooler day. My husband left behind at the valet counter his custom made beautiful walking cane silver handle. Did not recovered it. Gone. For a pricey place you would expect to recover your left behinds. What an amazing experience. My wife and I took her sister here for her birthday dinner. Our server Aaron was phenomenal. My wife has been a server for over 40 years in a couple of iconic San Diego restaurants. 24 years at one of them. She was so very impressed with our server Aaron's professionalism and attitude. Our meals were all excellent and extremely delicious. We requested a window table, but upon arriving, they looked like they were for larger parties, so maybe that's why we didn't get one. Only issue we had was the Manager. We noticed the manager stopped at every single table except ours. He walked past our table at least a dozen times, ignoring us every time. He stopped at the table next to ours, in front of ours and behind ours. Never once acknowledging us. We thought that was oddly unprofessional, as we were there for over 2 hours. Especially strange was when we left the restaurant, the manager was standing at the hostess station with the hostess. They both looked up as the hostess thanked us for coming and the manager looked away and said nothing. It's almost like we made him angry or something, but how could we, with absolutely zero contact. We had never experienced this behavior before. We're San Diego natives and we are in our mid 60s and early 70s. Being a steakhouse everything is definitely on the expensive side, but the quality of dishes and service are all to par in my opinion. What a wonderful dining experience in La Jolla! Decided to make a reservation for this weekend to celebrate a wedding anniversary and was craving a steak and seafood restaurant to try out in the area rather than driving to Downtown San Diego or the Gas Lamp District. In making the reservation I had indicated that we would be celebrating our anniversary, and so it was nice that the servers and staff/manager made it a point to welcome us and congratulate us on that. We had a 6:30pm reservation and were seated pretty promptly. Only waited maybe 5-10 min before being shown to our table. This place is pretty popular and had several large groups celebrating all sorts of things this evening. The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor dining, and just beautiful views of the water from almost every table. We composed our meal for the evening as such: 1. Starters: half dozen oysters and beet/burrata salad 2. Mains: ordered the rib eye and "surf & turf" filet and lobster tails 3. Sides: au gratin cheesy potatoes, asparagus, and Brussel sprouts. 4. Dessert: complimentary butter cake bananas foster, and we added the crème brûlée. Overall impressions of the food: excellently prepared to our liking. The steaks were cooked to our desired temperature requests (mine was medium rare, while my wife's was medium). Solid tasting and high quality beef. I finished my 22oz rib eye and even my wife's portion of filet mignon that she couldn't finish. Asparagus was grilled to perfection and had a nice crunch still. The brussel sprouts were good too. The au gratin potato was heavy but that's expected when ordering that style. Maybe too cheesy! I wish their menu offered a baked potato option that was just plain or straight forward and not the $80 over the top kind which comes with caviar. I feel bad as I forgot to check the check for her name but she was working at the bar tonight during happy hour and she was beyond stellar. We came here to celebrate Valentine's Day and were immediately impressed. Upon arrival, we were first greeted outdoors by the hostess and then by Ben, who welcomed us warmly. He offered the ladies a rose along with a chance to win a gift card to Eddie V's. Sadly, my partner didn't win, but it was a fun touch. We were also offered complimentary champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries, which was a really nice gesture and set the tone for the evening. We were then escorted to our table, which had a beautiful ocean view, something my partner absolutely loved, since she's a big ocean person. Bonus points there. Shortly after, we were greeted by our waitress, Phoebe. She was fantastic throughout the night, helpful with wine recommendations, attentive without being overbearing, and consistently checking in on us. We truly appreciated her service, and she even stepped in as our photographer for the night. For food, we started with the crispy rice with tuna as our appetizer, followed by the salmon and filet mignon for our entrees. We were able to make a reservation the day before on a Wednesday, although times were very limited as everything from after 5:30 to 7:45 were taken. Upon arrival we were asked about any special occasions, which we had communicated upon making a reservation. They had notes in the system as well which were communicated to the waitress. We wanted to do a gender reveal through a surprise dessert - the restaurant was more than happy to accommodate and the manager even came by to let us know they were happy to make the reveal special for us. The restaurant has beautiful large windows showcasing the ocean and cliffs. Most all tables in the restaurant have a great view of the ocean. For appetizer we shared the Calamari - I really appreciated that it was a unique twist on such a popular dish being that it had an Asian flair with cashews and other sauce on it. Bread and butter is served at the table as well. For dinner I ordered the prawns which were crab stuffed. It was akin to a mini crab cake on top of a prawn- so good! My husband got a steak that he really enjoyed, with prawns added as an accompaniment. The grand finale was the dessert which was an amazing gender reveal! There was a platter with several mini desserts that said Congratulations and a separate plate that has the gender written in chocolate and covered in powdered sugar. They valet but we got lucky with street parking. The staff was great and our server was so patient with our big party. While visiting La Jolla, my family and I went here around 6:15 PM for dinner. The vibe is formal, so make sure to dress up accordingly. We were seated on the 2nd floor overseeing a window with beautiful ocean views. The filet mignon was drowned and swimming in an excessive amount of butter, and I had difficulty tasting any potatoes under layers of cream and cheese. Very American-cuisine forward. The garden salad was awful. I really don't know how they failed an execution of something so simple. The dressing tasted like pure corn syrup and all the leaves were soggy and wilted. What I couldn't stand was the service. It took 20 minutes just to get drinks, 2 hours to have our entrees served, and another 15 minutes just to get the sides we ordered. The funny thing about eddie v's is that at least their reviews are honest. Being a waiter in La jolla for decades, I can tell you 2 things. Eddie V's is NOT where I would bring guests from out of town to experience the "best" that san diego has to offer. I actually wouldn't even take friends and/or family to La Jolla for food at all. But, again, at least their reviews are honest. Manhattan of La jolla has been in business for FORTY YEARS and has a solid 4 star rating, yet on Yelp there are less than 500 reviews. Cafe Milano on Pearl street has also been doing their thing for over 20 years but amazingly still has less than 500 Yelp reviews and yet still has a 4 star rating. Why? Because Manhattan and Milano have to, on a daily basis, delete the obvious influx of bad reviews to keep those stars up..plain and simple. I always liked my grandfather's 2 sayings. "Figures don't lie, liars figure." And the second one related to baseball stats specifically. "You can have a lucky day, but you can't have a lucky career " In other words, refer to quote 1. Dwane was the chef at eddie v's in La Jolla. He left eddie v's and came to Manhattan of La jolla. Eddie v's didn't change their menu at all, nor did Manhattan of La jolla. Dwayne is now gone from Manhattan of La jolla and living back in Texas and Manhattan still has the same basic menu that it has for 40 years. But eddie v's is at least honest by not deleting less than favorable reviews. Or, at least not deleting so many that it becomes a joke. The real irony here? When my brother comes in from the east coast on business the first thing he wants is to do is have food at Cafe Milano. 90% of his food is from restaurant depot, but 100% of the owner is from Calabria. We came here for a friend's birthday celebration There were about 12 of us. They got us a table outside with a gorgeous view! They had heated lamps and a fire pit to keep us warm. We ordered a variety of things. The food and drinks were all great. The servers were very attentive and friendly. They had put rose petals on the table and a card that said Happy Birthday. Before the bill came I reminded them that it was a birthday celebration. Good thing I did. They went back and got a dessert plate and wrote happy birthday on it. We all sang to our friend. It was a beautiful evening. We really appreciate the staff making this a special evening for us all. I would definitely go back. read more
