The sound of the waterfall was extremely relaxing and since I was able to open windows it made for a restful sleep. My room was near the noise from the bar but it ended at 9:00. The breakfast in the morning was delicious (fluffy eggs, bacon, biscuits and gravy, fruit, muffins, toast, bagels and mugs of coffee), managed by a wonderfully attentive woman who went table to table to ask if everythi was ok. All of this was accompanied by a beautiful view of the river. Great way to start the day. Dinner of grilled trout, mashed potatoes with garlic and rosemary, and braised heirloom carrots from the new fall menu was lovely. Finally, I enjoyed the mix of people I encountered, from retirees (like me) there to ride the Creeper trail (currently the Damascus to Abingdon portion is open, trail from Whitetop to Damascus open Mar27), to a group planning to hike the Appalachian Trail for 3 days. Lots of adventure to be found in the area. My favorite though was relaxing and painting on the deck by the river. Will definitely be back.

I dropped 1 star for 2 reasons - 1) breakfast was good but limited options. It was well stocked, clean and staff was so nice so I kind of feel bad for dropping a star for this but it's nice to have a little variety beyond the basic norms. 2) there is one hill that serves as the entry to 3 hotels. They allow tractor and trailer trucks to park along both sides of this entry making it one lane in and out. You will also sit and wait while these large trucks back up several times to fit perfectly on the side of the road. We would stay again despite the 2 things mentioned above!

Unlike other B&Bs, Scott and Loren's home offers a secluded and private setting where you can enjoy the grounds without having to tiptoe around other guests or wait for a good spot on the porch to open up. It offers a level of comfort and seclusion not easily found elsewhere. Their property is amazing with gardens throughout and a quietness you cannot find at other B&Bs. They are incredibly welcoming to their home and go out of their way to make you feel appreciated. While we were secluded from civilization, the home itself offered all of the amenities you could ever need. We especially enjoyed exploring the books on the shelves, sitting on the porch, looking at the many species of trees and plant life, and perhaps best of all Scott's French Toast breakfast. I cannot stress enough just how wonderful our stay was and how accommodating they were to our last-minute changes. And Courtyards are usually good, and I usually don't have to sleep with one eye open (except for that disastrous stay in Montgomery, AL). This one is no exception. It was a good night's rest for the price. The hallways didn't smell of pot smoke (seems to be an ongoing issue at the majority of Courtyards I've stayed in) and our room was clean (no stains on the couch! Normally I don't go near couches in these places), the bed was comfortable and the room temp just fine. They even have a decent (small) gym and a large lobby with plenty of seating and tables should you desire something from the cafe (limited hours of operation so make sure you get your caffeine before 10 am!)
