Four years ago I was new to northern Virginia, so I needed to find a new hair salon. I spent over a year trying at least four other salons without luck; my hair was never done the way I had wanted, despite my requests. Finally I tried Eclips and Jennifer! My luck changed, thankfully. When my hair is well cut and the right tones, I feel so much happier. The only downside, which is pretty true of most salons in NVA as compared to Columbia, MD (also affluent), is the cost, especially for a retired school teacher. There should be some latitude for senior citizens in this region. It would mean a lot. read more

Before I go off on my recent (and last) visit to Eclips, I have been going there for the past couple of years during the summer to touch up on my hair since I've been using Goldwell products to dye my hair the past 5 years. I always had wonderful service there, especially with Jennifer. A must go-to for cut and color. As a last minute thing to do before I graduated college (and to be able to pull it off), I had pink highlights by Goldwell's Elumen line. I was able to secure a job afterwards, so I had to lose the chunky pink streaks. Jennifer was on vacation, so my appointment was set up with Chantal. The receptionist told me she's experienced with color, but to give you a warning, she REALLY is not. At the consultation, she belittled at why I would ever dye my hair pink and said how much a pain in the ass it would be to get the pink out. She then blocked off a large chunk of time during the appointment so she could focus on me. All I asked at this time was not to dye my hair too dark and one dimension. I like my hair to have some dimension to it with different colors. During the appointment, she bleached the pink highlights. Which is a big DON'T since it'll damage your hair. And the result? I had brighter pink highlights in my hair. She then continues to lighten the crown of my head and apply two dyes, an almost-black shade of brown on the bottom, and ash brown all over. I specifically asked not to have ash colors since it washes out my complexion. And during this entire process, Chantal continues to belittle me. I thought she had a bad day at the consultation, but I was wrong. She made it seem that I was a challenge and that I should have known better than to dye my hair with Elumen. She even goes as far as to criticize my stylist back in Boston infront of everyone. How unprofessional. The end result? The two shades of brown ended up being so dark that it was not even worth trying to lightening my crown in the first place. Chantal pretty much went against what I had wanted initially, and you know what's even worst? As a professional stylist, she should know how to work with haircolor AND timing. When my hair was dried and styled by someone else because she ran out of time to cut my hair. So while I was tended by someone else, she was cutting 2 kids' and some random man's hair. She overbooked my appointment. Her attitude and lack of professionalism really sealed the deal that I will not be going back to Eclips. My stylist back in Boston even said she went over the top with my appointment with all the unnecessary bleaching and dyeing techniques. My total came out to $350 -- which is a lot more than the chic Newbury salon I go in Boston ($230). For a family-friendly establishment that claims to be the #1 colorist in the Northern Virginia, I find that hard to believe. read more

My fiance was recently in the salon and had a very bad experience with one of the stylists and returned home with a very uneven hair cut and gouge in the neck. I went to Eclips this week to get my haircut. I have straight and very fine hair so finding someone to cut my hair is a challenge. I went to the salons website and read all the descriptions and picked Stephanie because it said she specialized in short and fine haircuts. I am very pleased with her haircut. Stephanie only cuts hair on Tues and Thurs so I have already my my next appt in January. Stephanie manages on other days...and she is very professional. I believe Karen also works on fine, straight hair if you are looking for someone. It was 70 dollars for a haircut and dry. It is high...but getting your hair cut in a salon in the burbs and DC is never cheap unless you take your chances at Bubble and the Hair Cuttery. With my hair...those chances are NEVER good. It seems like there are a lot of good stylists at Eclips...from my observations. The women in the salon were all chatty with their stylist and all of the stylists have cute hair and color. It is a full service salon...they offer you drinks...and they also offer spa & nail services. There is also an Eclips in McLean. Now my hair is very sassy...just in time for me to go to my holiday party for work. read more

I got a free haircut to Eclips and cashed it in a few weeks ago. I was not overly impressed by the setup and feel of the waiting area, but it wasn't offensive either. Trish cut my hair and she was absolutely fantastic (I would give *her* 5 stars). I am not one of those people that is OCD about their hair but she listened to my thoughts, suggested ideas for my hair type, and delivered an amazing haircut. I think haircuts are in the $60 range and I am not sure I'd spend that much money for that experience. If you're looking to treat yourself, I might recommend here, but they also don't go over the top to make you feel at peace. Also, bring cash for tips. read more

I have been going hr for about 1 year. They were the only salon I could find that would take my SpaFinder GC for hair (most placed only take them for "spa services"). Went to their website to look at the stylist bios to choose the one who I thought would do well on my hair (long and naturally curly) I chose Chantal and I have soooo happy ever since. She listens to what I want from my cut and styling (I'm VERY low maintenance) and always seems excited to see me, even though I only come in 3-4x per year. I took my daughter here for highlights and a cut with Christy. AMAZING! This was our first visit here (my stylist was on vacation) and we were a little nervous but with school starting...we had to do it! Christy was amazing. She gave helpful guidance but was in no way pushy. She used several different shades for the highlights and was very knowledgeable on how to care for dry colored hair. The cut was exactly what we asked for, a trim, nothing less nothing more. All in all this was a wonderful experience. After 14 years of trying to find the right place, I now have an amazing hair salon that does not bankrupt you, attempt to over sell products, and the best part- you look amazing. I've been going to Eclips for the last couple of years after I finally found a good stylist. I always see Jenny H. She's great when I want to do some new cut with my hair or even just a trim. And she's genuinely interested (and remembers) what's going on in your life. She's good with color too, though I've not had much done in that area. An occasional all-over color to hide the burgeoning grays. I would definitely recommend her. Cost is average for the area, upper $60s for most stylists. Since they changed locations, I think they've been experimenting with some massage therapists. I was worried at first since I didn't know what to expect with their new therapist, Lolita. But I had nothing to fear. She was fantastic, experienced and professional. The one thing I will say is that the massage room is too small for the table/bed. When doing my upper back, she couldn't stand directly behind my head. She had to do one side of my back and then go around the other side of the table/bed. Not her fault, of course, but a definite drawback of having a massage here. One hour massage was $97. read more

My advice to fellow Yelpers considering this salon is to be very wary of positive reviews coming from accounts with no other posts who just HAVE to rave about a specific stylist. I also find it suspect that over 25 reviews have been filtered, the majority of which are negative. I strongly suspect that Eclips does its very best to "manage" their Yelp page, even if it means throwing up fake reviews. read more

ATENA did my highlights, and it was the BEST I've ever received. She took me from brunette to blonde for the summer and spent several hours working patiently to get it just perfect. I have been looking for a salon in the area that I could trust with my natural blond hair for awhile. I came across Missy Burke on a local community page and decided to schedule a consult. I immediately felt like she not only understood what I wanted, but would do whatever it takes to get it done. I had my appointment a few weeks later and left happier than I have ever been! She took my blond to the next level and seriously put so much care into it (I was there for almost 5 hours - and she was so fun to chat with the whole time, it basically flew by). I went in to get a super simple buzzed haircut, but upon further review the cuts were uneven. On top of that, I was charged $67 for this haircut. I would understand if I had long hair coming in, but I already had short hair. Service was fine and personable, but the quality of the haircut and the charge does not make it worth it. I went to eclips to have my hair blow dried for a wedding I was attending. I've never been to this salon before and when I arrived, my "stylist" was a college student. She has never been to cosmetology school and is not a licensed stylist. Although she was a very nice person and has worked in salons on and off, she has no business styling hair and lacks the training. With that being said, my blow dry was the worst blow dry I've ever had in my life. My hair felt rough and I had fly aways all over. I ended up going home, washing my hair and styling it myself. I did a much better job than she did. I will never go back to this salon. The other stylists who are licensed may do a better job, but the owners/managers of this salon are unprofessional allowing inexperienced and unlicensed people blow dry and style hair. I'm not sure if blow drying requires a license, but they still shouldn't allow people with no training to provide this service. read more

I had such a great experience at Eclips! I impulsively dyed my hair brown with box dye a week prior to my appointment, and of course messed it up so I came in to have it fixed. I did the same thing about a year ago but with red, and I absolutely loved the work that Cait did, so I knew that Eclips was the place to do it. When I first came in, my hair was uneven and patchy, and unfortunately my first appointment didn't do the job. I didn't pay for a blow dry, so I didn't notice until I got home. I emailed them later that night asking if I could come back in, and Stephanie (the owner) responded 10 minutes later writing that they'd love to have me come back in the next day. When I came in the next morning, Nakia took such great care of me by applying a treatment, fixing my roots, and evening out the color. She even tinted my eyebrows to match my hair (because I have natural blonde eyebrows), and curled it! With no additional charge! I went 2-3 times and felt they were too busy for personal service. I had a HUGE customer service issue (basically called me a liar) never went back. Hairstyle was good work but never felt comfortable there. [Liar issue: I called and had left a message regarding an appointment. My hairdresser argued with me that they didn't have an answering service. I repeated that I had left a message, she said no, I said yes, she said no....they do have voice mail. I have very curly hair and could not find the right stylist to cut it correctly,Until, I stepped foot into Eclips doors and sat in Susan's chair. Not only is she talented, friendly and creative, she knows her stuff and teaches you a few things along the way. She introduced me to Deva Curl, which is an amazing product that brings your hair back to its natural curl and helps control frizz,which us Curly Hair Divas are all too familiar with! When I got tired of my curls, she gave me an amazing Brazilian blow out that not only takes me 35 mins to shower and blow dry my hair straight. For this mother of two, meaning me, I can't thank her enough for helping me looked polished in under 40 minutes, when it took me over an hour to straighten it before! My wrist and my hair thank her! So ladies, if you are looking for a style that you can rock any day of the week and actually can maintain yourself, then Susan is your gal! Now, lets talk about Eclips Kids, shall we. Every time I have taken my 2 year old there he always walks out with the cutest faux hawk you ever saw. Worried about your kid actually sitting still, not to worry, they have t.v.s in front of every chair to entertain your little one while they get a hair cut. Look, I used to think that it doesn't matter what the haircut looks like if the price is right but sometimes, you get what you pay for. Learned that lesson the hard way before we discovered Eclips Kids. A nice perk of being a frequent customer in the kids area, is you get a card that they punch every time you come in. After so many visits, you get a free haircut for your perfect little angel. Waxing anyone?? If so, Navan is the one for you. She's quick, and does a great job. She mainly uses sugar waxing which is the best that I have experienced. Hair grows back less frequent and soft not coarse. Everyone is very nice, but I paid $192 for a root color and cut. I was told my stylish was a "level 2" out of 4 possible levels, so I can't image how expensive a "level 4" stylist would be. I paid it at the time (possibly out of shock) and then called back later to ask exactly what I paid for. The receptionist told me I paid extra for additional color they needed to use, which sounded strange to me as my hair is not even shoulder length. She gave me the excuse that thicker hair requires more color and thus, I guess, is more expensive. The receptionist told me my stylist would call me and explain, but she never did. I guess she figured I'd forget about the whole thing. I feel like I was very overcharged for a mediocre color and cut. I don't think I'll return. read more

This Review is for the old location in Ashburn Village. I have not been tot he new location. Not worth the price. This salon is way overpriced. I have had my hair colored, cut and styled here three times. I've also had a pedicure. The stylist did a fantastic job with the color, cut and style, but I found the pricing ridiculous. ($75 for just a haircut!). Then the stylists expect a "cash-only" tip afterwards...well 10%-20% tip on $300 is $30-$60 and I don't carry more than $20 cash (if any at all) with me unless if I am traveling. It is extremely annoying that they don't allow tips on credit cards and debit cards. Most people do not carry cash these days like they used to. I have a hunch that its because the stylists don't want to pay taxes or the credit card fee on their tips and the salon is too lazy to get a tax software program to figure out how to separate out the stylists tips and the fees associated with tips placed on creditcard purchases from their service charges. The pedi-cure was not great or relaxing. The water was cold, the massage of the feet and lower legs was weak and rushed. The spa section where the pedis and manis and massages are done is a joke. It resembles nothing of a spa and is cheaply decorated. The pedicure was nothing special and I wouldn't pay the money to go there again for a pedicure when I can spend a lot less for the same thing elsewhere. On the way out, a piece of hair from the floor got caught in the wet polish on my toe and I had to have it repolished. The salon is in need of renovation (more than just changing out the waiting room chairs). It certainly does not feel like a "spa" when you walk in there...and the spa side does not have a relaxing atmosphere. The stylist area is way over-crowded. A huge section of the salon is taken up with shelving that display products for sale. They should redesign the whole interior from floor to ceiling and cut down the products area to 1/4 of what it is now. Then I might pay the prices they charge. When I go to a day-spa and pay a high price for services, I expect the salon to feel like a mini-retreat when I walk in, not just another average salon. For the price of services at Eclips, I would expect for a very inviting and relaxing spa and salon atmosphere. Instead the interior is outdated and looks more like a regular to lower end salon than a "Day Spa" that charges $$$$. Skip this place unless if you want to over pay by alot. read more
