FOOD: Such a great alternative for vegans/vegetarians. Don't be fooled by the look because everything we had was delicious and filling. It's a type of food meant for sharing. Eat with your hands is definitely the best way to eat it but they do provide a spoon. There were 4 of us so we had the family style for two (4 options and a salad) and a single (2 options and a salad) all served with injera (pancake/crepe to help pick up the food and eat with it). SERVICE: It was our first time and know nothing about Ethiopian food and so we asked the server for recommendations and she suggested plenty and everything was delicious. She recommended Spicy Misir Wot (best seller), Aterkik Alicha Wot, Enguday Tibs and Shiro Wot. She mentioned an off menu dish and it was cooked beets and carrots. Quick service and very nice and welcoming staff and owner(s). AMBIANCE: Very cute interior that showcases different Ethiopian made items and such. Plenty of seats indoors and outdoors (on the patio by the creek). Quiet for the most part but on the patio, some less fortunate people staying around the creek can blurt obscenities or scream them out so fair warning. Other than that, a beautiful peaceful interior.
Cute and authentic Ethiopian restaurant in Downtown San Luis Obispo. We stumbled upon this location, but it's centrally located and backs up to the scenic creek for patio dining. We had just eaten, but came in on a cold day and enjoyed Ethiopian tea with cinnamon, cardamom and cloves. Service was personable. Menu looks tantalizing with lots of vegetarian options.

Ebony's was located across a small bridge along a little creek. There was various seating options available such as bar tops, indoor tables, and patio seating. Our orders were taken at the counter by a very friendly young man. We opted for the family meal for 2. We chose the spicy misir wot which consisted of simmered red lentils with onions and an Ethiopian spice. Enguday tibs which was portobello mushrooms saiteed with onions and peppers. Shiro wot which was a paste like sauce made with chickpeas and lastly Denech alicha wot which consisted of potatoes and carrots cooked with onions and turmeric. Along with the dishes was injera (Ethiopia's version of roti). The meal was brought out in a lovely basket displayed in a very inviting way. My husband and I helped ourselves to each dish enjoying all of them. I think our favorite of the 4 was the spicy misir wot although we both really enjoyed the denech alicha wot too. Overall we had a great time and enjoyed our first foray into Ethiopian cuisine.
Finally, an Ethiopian restaurant has arrived in SLO-town. I feel so full after ordering the half-dish with their red lentils and the daily special of cooked kale. Best of all it's all healthy. This cuisine is one of the oldest in the world and it is believed that the Queen of Sheba ruled this area at the time of King Solomon. Its traditions are from an ancient civilization with strong Christian-ties. Short of visiting the country, you can enjoy this delicious food while listening to very cool music. The location is inside the Network building where Bliss used to be and the shaded outdoor seating is still next to the creek and Mission Plaza. Highly recommend.
I can't eat gluten or dairy and rarely eat out because so little is safe for me to consume. Enter Ebony. Ebony took over where Bliss Cafe used to be, in the Network Mall on Higuera St. The space is welcoming and soothing, with bright colors and comfy seating all around. You order at the counter and I really couldn't decide which dish to get. I got three items and oooh it was so good!!!! Lentils and mushrooms and kale, all on a delicious rolled injera. It was enough for two meals. I *strongly* encourage you to check out this local, woman-owned business.
Great service and delicious food! I often seek out Ethiopian food whenever I have the opportunity since it's hard to come by where I live. My visit to Ebony definitely satisfied my cravings and I was able to purchase a spice blend too so that I can try to recreate the flavors next time I get desperate. I went on a Sunday so the menu was limited to a few brunch items. I can't wait to go back and try more dishes here. What a great addition to downtown SLO!
We stopped by here for a late lunch on our road trip. It's such a lovely spot. At first it looks like industrial and then you notice their sign and a lovely office like place at the back. The owner was extremely welcoming and gave us a little intro on Ethiopian food for our friends who hadn't tried the cuisine before, which was a very nice experience. They ran out of most of the dishes by the time we got there. They have a lot of pre orders, she even suggested we text her next time so she can save them for us. We went ahead with the combo option. The food was so delicious, it was mostly different kind of lentils. Each one had its own unique flavor and was just finger licking good. The portion size is rather small, we had to order at least 4 extra injera. We also got a mushroom side which was my favorite. The service was even better. It's completely organic, vegan and gluten free. I'd definitely recommend and wanna go back to try other dishes we couldn't.
Phew, this food was goooood. The spicy misir (red lentil) and the potatoe carrot combo were my fav. The tea and ginger beer was so fresh and special. The service was friendly and helpful. The little goodies they sell are worth perusing too, super unique and beautiful. I think this place deserves more attention for the ambiance and style/decor. Just walking around is a feast to the eyes in my opinion and I can't wait to bring my next visitor here for lunch.

First time coming to Ebony and first time trying Ethiopian food! I was so happy with this place; came with a friend on a Friday night and there was no wait and open seating. We sat outside and there was a view of the concert that night so it was a great vibe and we had a great time. We did the family style for two ($39) with four entrees, salad, and the injera. We chose the following: Spicy misir wot - lentil based and lots of different spices Shiro wot - chickpeas based Enguday tibs - sautéed mushrooms; super flavorful and the most different from the other dishes we got (more saute style; less pasty or saucy) Denech alicha wot - potatoes and carrots Injera - came with this spongey crepe like roll that you can eat with all the sauces/dips/entrees You order first and then sit wherever you want. We did wait a little bit because they accidentally lost our order due to a big party before us, but the staff was so nice and apologetic even though we didn't mind at all. He even gave us free Ethiopian tea for us while we waited and offered banana bread, which was so sweet. But the food came out shortly after that and it was well worth the wait! So good! The vibes were great and I will definitely come back again. read more
I've only come to SLO twice and visited this restaurant both times. Tucked into a hallway with a back patio, this place has become an absolute favorite of mine. I've gotten the meal for two (~$40) on both occasions. The mushroom tibs are my favorite, followed closely by the potatoes and beets. Plenty of extra injera and the food is served atop an injera as well. The food is flavorful, healthy, vegan-friendly, and overall delicious. I also tried the teff brownie ($5) and it was a good sweet treat for the end of the meal. A little tough for my liking but still good. The service is also really great. The owner is extremely nice and friendly. You order at the counter, she provides a number and the food is brought out to you on a beautiful woven basket. read more

My bf loves Ethiopian food and anywhere we go .. we search for it. So happy we food this place! He really enjoyed everything he got though it was all vegetarian! He's a carnivore so for him to love every single item says a lot. I think he didn't even take a breath it was so good! Great friendly service! Super clean ! read more
Recently, I had the pleasure of being treated to dine at this fine Ethiopian restaurant in the heart of downtown San Luis Obispo. . Offering healthy, hand made East African cuisine, we found tranquility and healing eating organic, vegan and authentic dishes with Injera (a light, fresh Teff bread baked daily). . We sat indoors for Sunday brunch and had a chickpea dish that resembles scrambled eggs sautéed with onions and peppers accompanying skillet potatoes, freshly roasted then ground coffee, hot cardamom tea and a house made ginger beer. . Everything was phresher than phresh and firmly spiced and seasoned. Faban, one of the owners, greeted and waited on us with the exceptional service and is well versed in her passionate craft of catering and hospitality. . If you're on the centralcoast and are looking for dishes that go beyond American shorelines and flavors that will fulfill your international cravings, Ebony is the place to do both. Epicurean delight for vegan foodies! Faban, an Ethiopian native and metropolitan New York transplant serves authentic organic vegan Ethiopian Wots, and Injera made from 100% organic Teff, made fresh daily. Faban is classy and personable, and an overall great hostess. The Injera is light, airy, thin and spongy with plenty of stretch. It's a top favorite. The Spicy Misir Wot - red lentils simmered in caramelized onions, garlic, ginger, and traditional spicy Ethiopian barbecue sauce. If you can only get one entree and Injera, this would be a fine choice. Shiro Wot - thick creamy sauce made of roasted chick peas, simmered in onions, garlic and tomatoes is a top choice for when you're in the mood for something vegan and creamy. It's less spicy that's the Spicy Misir Wot, but still has a kick. For vegans who want to skip the spice and tomatoes, the Aterkik Alichha Wot is a good choice, made of yellow split peas, caramelized onions, garlic, ginger & turmeric. Aterkik Alichha Wot has the comfort of split peas, with the added health benefits of Turmeric. Enguday Tibs - mushrooms, sautéed in onions, garlic, and peppers was my favorite, but I love mushrooms. Next time, I would be very happy with Enguday Tibs, Aterkik Alichha Wot and Injera. read more

Loved the building designed space. A hidden gem for sure. The atmosphere was super inviting and felt amazing. I ordered 2 entrees and waited patiently with excitement. The owner was of course super professional and helpful while serving each meal to her customers. I took my order to go, which came nicely plated. I must add that immediately getting into my vehicle I was hit with a burst of pure sweetness, spicy aroma of incredible spices. The food was exceptional. Everything was amazing. Organic fresh to order food that did not disappoint. Thank you Ebony for bringing delicious Ethiopian cuisine to the Central Coast. read more

From time to time I'll feel inspired enough to cobble together a combination of words that closely resembles how I feel after leaving a great restaurant. This is one of those moments. This will be fun. I read an article in some magazine about this place. Right away, I felt like I knew the owner without actually meeting her. She has a deep passion for community and understands how food is used as a medium for connecting people. I knew the food was going to be good, because it was gonna be made with love. I was not disappointed. Normally, when I'm hungry I usually eat non-vegan stuff. I came here hungry. I left full! And not just full, but with the feeling of light contentment. It kind of felt like I just meditated. Huh! I decided to go out of my way and take a few nice photos of the ambience, the menu, and the food itself. No matter what you get, it's going to be pretty damn amazing. You can throw a dart at any of the things you can choose from on the menu, and you will not be disappointed. Not. At. All. Definitely worth a try, and I strongly recommend coming here with an awesome friend you want to have a great conversation with. This is the absolute perfect place for it. At the same time, if you come here alone then the owner will make you feel at home. A true heart of gold. I'll be back! read more
I was super impressed by this place. I have eaten at many Ethiopian restaurants in LA and was super happy to see one here in SLO. They did a beautiful job decorating the space in the Network. The service couldn't have been friendlier. You could tell how much pride and passion the owners put into the food and the space. Service was super quick. My friend and I shared a 2 person platter. It came with several choices. The platter was delivered in a beautiful basket. The injira bread was light and spongy, perfect to scoop up the yummy vegetarian selections. I loved the lentils the best although everything we ate was delicious. Bonus points for the injera being gluten free. read more

OMG! THE best Ethiopian food we've ever had. The spicy red lentil wot was our fave! The puréed chickpea shiro wot, sautéed mushrooms tibs, and green beans + carrots were all perfectly cooked and also super tasty. Our 10-year old LOVED it! Faban's counter service was friendly and helpful in ordering. We liked the option of either indoor or outdoor. It was a beautiful day and we chose to open the umbrella and eat creekside. The full order of food (and coffee) was delivered quickly as we arrived right after opening. It was enough for three hungry fans. Definitely going back! read more
