They were helpful but not pushy and they were knowledgable about their merchandise. I bought two beautiful shirts made of fabric that was woven of beautiful colors and textures. So, why three stars instead of four or five? The gentleman on shift that day was a little too salesy for me and for that store. It's a very small store so already I was trying to be polite but also set the tone that I'd just like to look for a bit and get an idea of what I wanted. He was respectful of that, although within 5min I did get asked twice if i was ready to try something on, etc. But when I did decide, he was very prompt and accommodating in getting me the two pairs and in a few sizes. The check out process was where I started to want to just move it along, as the upsell was coming hard and heavy. Apparently because I'd like to purchase shoes, that must mean I didn't have a selection of belts at home to wear to match, or socks or even a shirt. All three of those items I was told I was going to get, meaning, "...and now you'll just get the shirt, you'll need this belt and let me pick out some socks for you and you'll be all set.". No thank you sir, I'll just take the loafers and be on my way. He got the idea and after another attempt at selling me creams, waxes and polishes, I was rung up and out the door. I do recommend this location though, don't get me wrong. Just be forewarned that you'll need to prepare for the tight quarters and final upsells at the end.

Style is modern and simple, but with some unique details or designs that you won't find at an H&M or a regular department store. The prices for clothes tend to be steep, but they have good sales at the end of each season. Employees there are friendly and don't stare you down like the other boutiques on Newbury St.

Granted, I was in there during the late Sunday afternoon, but damn, it just felt so empty. I'll admit it, I've never been a big fan of DKNY clothing. After their rise to fame 10-15 years or so ago as the "it" brand, and ceding back into the not so lime light, I wondered what could they offer me or the ladies in my life for clothing. What I found was a bunch of relatively bland clothing at upper end prices. I thought DKNY was supposed to be a fashionable brand at one point or another, but it seems that ship has sailed away, and no matter how many models you have strutting down the runway, it doesn't change the fact that the clothes look pretty much like department store stuff... I will admit I thought some of the more cyber-y looking women's boots were actually kind of cool with the metal snaps and the gummy soles, so plus to that. The men's selection was absolute rubbish. Distressed jeans? Boring looking sack-cut jackets? Yuck! Yuck! Yuck! The staff was eager and helpful to please, but it doesn't help when your stuff is boring or unwearable. Thankfully America still does have decent fashion designers, but you're not going to find them at DKNY.

This is the only Boston-area Banana Republic that I know of to have a large selection of clearance shoes during major sales. Usually the sales section is also bursting with choices. They change the layout of the store on a fairly regular basis, so you won't always find the sales and petites in the same place they were on your last visit. I understand this tactic from a marketing perspective--it gets people to browse more--but as an efficient shopper, it annoys me. You may have noticed I am very aware of the petites section at Banana Republic, despite standing a respectable 5'6". I have a fairly short torso and given the generous cuts of Banana Republic's clothing, actually require the petite in many of their tops and even some of their dresses. This is frankly ridiculous. At my height it's bizarre to require a BR to have a significant petites section to find clothes that fit.
