A little worried that I enjoyed my food so much here... Anyway, I had been in the day before, having a nose around and didn't realize that they had places you could eat at inside. So I was determined, the next day to come back and have lunch. I got there at about 1:15-1:30-ish and it was so busy, I couldn't do it. You could barely move around the store, all the tables were taken and of course there were loads of people standing around, unsure of what to do.
I decided to do some shopping and come back... remember everything, except the Lampredetto kitchen closes at 3 p.m. and reopens for dinner at 7 p.m. I came back at around 2:30 p.m. Much quieter, but still quite a few people having lunch. A reason I took a star off is 1) it is utterly confusing... menus all over the place, you have to pay attention to the specialties of the day, and you can't use the stairs right in front of you because that is for the waitstaff and 2) the staff, minus the guy who took my order, weren't very helpful, probably because they are rushing about all the time, but I did get charged for service, so it would be nice to get a little bit.
Anyway, even after the waiter explained everything to me, I was having one of those moments where I just couldn't process it all, so I told him, "I would like pasta, what are those options?" I didn't need to hear anything else. I decided on the meat sauce pasta of the day which was a Rigatoni with sausage, Leeks, and Radicchio. I also started with a 3 euro taster of soup. It was a soup made with Farro. You pay after you order, I didn't think it was weird given the set up of the place... it is really more like a cafeteria than anything, plus it means you can leave whenever you like, no waiting about for the check or standing in line at a till.
Shortly after the waiter gave me my change and receipt, another waitress showed up with my little taster of soup. It was actually bigger than I thought... kind of in a whisky tumbler. Then picture a serving spoon. I wasn't sure how this was supposed to work and said out loud to myself, "Is someone taking the piss?!" There were two ladies at the table next to me and I caught one watching and she also looked skeptical of the spoon fitting in the glass. However, it did. They do bring you a bag with some bread inside. Typically I don't eat the bread anymore, but because I was having soup and the bread seemed to fit better into the glass than the spoon, I went with it. It was really quite nice and I will try to recreate it at home!
Then my bowl of pasta came. Really, all day long I was just thinking about a hearty bowl of pasta, but didn't just want your average spaghetti. This was what I was wanting. The pasta was so al dente, that I almost thought it wasn't cooked... don't know if that is possible, but it did take a little bit more jaw power. However, it was really the sauce that I loved. I love Leeks, and I really love Radicchio in pastas. You never see it in the U.S. and one of my favourite dishes is at a restaurant in Rome that makes pasta and Radicchio. To be honest, based on what I ate, you would have thought I was ready to head out into a crisp autumn day. Regardless, it was lovely.
I do enjoy the different parts of the store, it is just a bit too congested and I always worry about knocking things off the shelves. I have scoured the books and haven't found an English one, which is a bit sad for me because I would love to recreate some of these dishes. If you are going to stop in, go closer to the end of lunch service, rather than at the beginning. read more
