Can I say, "Tim Armstrong is my hero?" Wow. This guy's farm is pretty darn impressive and that comes from an ag alumni and whose parents have their own small persimmon and pomelo farm [among other things they grow]. Apparently, he is also instrumental in the success for Berry Good Farms which is a terrific location benefiting a lofty cause. You have to check out this space and all of the things growing there. It's a little bit out of the way for some, but well worth the experience and the amazing variety of plants grown and sold here compared to most other nurseries in the Jacksonville area. Plenty of rare annuals and perennials! We picked up some mulberry trees ($6 & $20) and a blueberry plant ($6) and even got to sample some mulberries from their mature plants. What I also wanted to buy was all of the varieties of persimmon trees ($30), olive trees ($30), and rare edibles that you'll be reluctant to find seeds for online much less live plants. I'm so happy I got my Okinawa Spinach ($2-5) and Longevity Spinach ($2-5) both of which are perennials and grow year after year. If you are a gardener, this place is like Heaven. They also participate in local farmers markets like Wednesdays Art District Farmers Market and the Jacksonville Beach Green Market on Saturday afternoon which is a great way to purchase some of the plants that they grow at the farm. And the prices are so reasonable @ $2-10! Overall, what a great concept with frequent educational workshops and events hosted right there at the farm. I just want to buy everything Eat Your Yard Jax has available, but lack the space and, most probably, the work ethic. LOL. Thank God they have helpers/employees at his nursery. Zack was our tour guide and super knowledgeable, but Tim is just a plant god and gardening guru. What an amazing place on the westside...

On Saturday, we ventured out into the middle of nowhere to Eat Your Yard, a plant nursery and hippie agricultural landscape. It's a little sketchy driving down the long, narrow dirt path, but once we reached the finish line, we were greeted by one of the workers behind the operation. The greatest aspect of the brand is that they care deeply about their community involvement. They are striving to empower locals to support local agriculture but also practice it sustainably at home. Luckily, our tour guide showed us the entire operation. Everything from various types of spinach to dozens of blue tilapia, to more succulents than one would know what to do with, this place was really freakin' neat. They offer unique workshops and classes and offer tours on the weekends. Eat Your Yard is definitely an educational experience that folks of all ages can benefit from. Check them out if you're itching for a new experience!

Tim was so friendly and took the time to walk us around the garden and explain what everything was.

We've made several trips here, and we were finally able to stay in one of the bungalows in the newly opened area called The Hammock. The tiny houses are quaint and comfy, but have everything you need for a relaxing weekend away. We had breakfast both mornings in our bungalow with the farm fresh eggs they left in our kitchen's mini fridge, along with fresh sourdough and muffins from the kitchens pastry chef. We had lunch and dinner at the restaurant, as well as a less formal fish fry on Friday night at The Roost. Everything was incredible--I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. Menu Seasonal-varies, we had the corn bread with pesto and broccoli and fresh butter. The shrimp and grits was yummy-a bit smoky spicy-great. The grilled trout was juicy and cooked perfectly-atop a bed of buttery rice and the best cooked asparagus ever! Tender all the way to the end. The kale salad was huge, fresh, loaded with toasted almonds, shredded cabbage, and quartered beets. Enough for 3-4. Okay, yes do get dessert. We saw someone else get the strawberry n had to have it-a white chocolate strawberry filled with strawberry mousse and an apricot jam middle. It came with a side of brownie covered with a chocolate creme and cookie sprinkle. Wow!! Well worth it!! The death by chocolate was served with pistachio crumbles. Strawberry was better. Summary A rural special occasion special place farm to table food venue. Love it-outstanding service, the best fresh food menu, beautiful setting.

Two trees were in small containers and they have done wonderfully well after planting! However, the two larger trees have struggled for three years and one of the trees is slowly falling to pieces. The one that is clearly going to die had a cut main root when it was planted. I was told by the staff that it would live if it survived the year. It survived but is not going to be here by next year. The other large tree is struggling but might make it. I've recently read that when planting trees from containers you must unroll the root ball. I know this wasn't done and I suspect it is the main problem. The dying tree can easily be rocked back and forth and could probably be pushed over. The roots have not spread out. I've used other Shaw service with good results but I don't think I will in the future.
