I wondered at first glance at the lamb-kind of a lam loaf-not like a gyro, served with mint and something else on the most AMAZING wheat bun!! The sauce-not typical tziziki but really delish. I chose the squash which was sautéed with dill-not my fav but the squash was cooked perfectly. We also had the shrimp and grits-a Jax fav that consistently pleases. Our friend had the chicken with heat sandwich-toasted bun, house pickles/many, slivers of onion, battered chicken breast, with a douse of hot sauce. If you like the heat-this is your sandwich-served with medium sliced fries. Very tasty. There is a separate dessert menu but we were full-satisfied. Congaree and Penn is a special place, with a welcome vibe and incredibly nice staff. It feels like a retreat tucked away somewhere in the California wine country, even though it's just 30 minutes outside Jacksonville. We've made several trips here, and we were finally able to stay in one of the bungalows in the newly opened area called The Hammock. The tiny houses are quaint and comfy, but have everything you need for a relaxing weekend away. We had breakfast both mornings in our bungalow with the farm fresh eggs they left in our kitchen's mini fridge, along with fresh sourdough and muffins from the kitchens pastry chef. We had lunch and dinner at the restaurant, as well as a less formal fish fry on Friday night at The Roost. Everything was incredible--I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. Conagree and Penn blew every mark out of the water - service, ambiance, quality of food, value., and everything else I didn't mention It's an honest shame that I live 1,000 miles north of this spot, rather than being the lucky individuals who live across the street. This is a farm-to-table dining experience, but Conagree and Penn also provides venues for vineyard tours, parties, and I can only hope they offer a venue for weddings. It would be an understatement to merely appraise the gorgeous open rural vineyard atmosphere. One can bask in the view all day if they wanted. Coupling the ambiance was one of the most cheerful and personable waitresses I've ever come across. Lively, helpful, and downright hilarious, she was a supreme joy to have for our table. Our appetizers comprised the corn bread, flatbread, and New Potato croquettes. All were delicious. The corn bread had a very nice crumb and you could tell fresh corn was used, as the flavor was much more sophisticated than generic supermarket corn bread that is essentially florescent yellow. The flatbread had a nice crisp and tasted notably fresh. The croquettes were crispy on the outside and smooth (almost mashed potato-esque) on the inside. The entrées topped the appetizers. My relatives ordered the Beef Belly, Gnocchi, Yard Bird, and Shrimp & Grits. Everything tasted wonderfully. The Beef Belly was soft and tender; the gnocchi was clearly made in-house, the Yard Bird had satisfyingly crispy skin; and the Shrimp & Grits was a nice twist from the typical cajun style that I typically enjoy. I ordered the Confit Duck Leg and could not be happier with my choice. Loved the duck, which also had crispy skin. The lima bean cassoulet, fennel, leeks, and apple gremolata were pretty much perfect complements to the duck and were sensational when eaten together. It is honestly one of the most unique food combinations I have ever had, amounting to a top-notch entrée. The only duck entrée I can think of that matched this was from my trip to Tuscany, Italy. Our dessert comprised a slice of chocolate cake that resoundingly closed off a remarkable evening. If I find myself in the area again, I'll be back again with haste. We went to the farm initially on a Saturday during the COVID-19 pandemic, thinking that it would be easy to socially distance ourselves from others out there. We were right. We ran into only three other small families/groups. After checking in, we explored the area. They have horses, goats, and birds, as well as a variety of fruit and olive orchards, rice paddies, and trees. It was calm, serene, and beautiful. We purchased a few flavors of apple cider vinegar and rice. I visited again a few years later specifically for the Friday Night Fish Fry. The ambiance was lovely and the food was served pretty quickly since there was a pre fixe menu - salad, catfish, grits, greens, cornbread, and dessert. The food was very good. We visited the grounds again with a group five years after I'd gone during the pandemic and it was a very different experience. There was live music, a food truck, tractor-pulled wagon rides, and lots of decorations for the fall season. We had little kids with us and we thought they may enjoy the wagon ride. While it was nice to ride out a little further on the farm, it would've been nice to have had at least a little narration. We were just riding around in silence. I'm sure we'll make it back to Congaree and Penn for either an afternoon at the farm or a Thursday Night Supper. read more

Our waiter, Sam, was awesome, and every employee we encountered was very nice and polite. Service was truly 10/10. However the restaurant is very niche. We recently had a very relaxing afternoon dining at and walking around Congaree and Penn! We've been meaning to go here for quite a while because several of our friends had recommended this spot as a great destination to dine at and mosey about on a date. Luckily we had a sunny day which also didn't include too much heat. What stood out for us with regards for food was how fresh the meals were, in addition to the variety of healthy options. It's evident that they put in a lot of care and time into their food, and it certainly showed and tasted as such! A beautiful location and delicious food. I want to first address my -1 star from the rating - this visit was my first time at Congaree and Penn, I had heard amazing things for years. The rotating menu has always been mentioned as a show-stopper and I found it to be slightly limited. It may have been that the AC was not working inside but it took me a while to figure out what I would order. We were there for lunch and the menu was dairy-heavy. We were told to limit customizations which I felt was normal but that made me want to order a dish that I didn't have to customize. I went with the fried spicy chicken sandwich as my main - it was absolutely delicious, but a few areas of the cut of chicken were very tough for a sandwich. This was surprising. I ordered, for the table, cornbread and a melon salad. These both were more of the show stopper than anything else! That cornbread was EVERYTHING - fresh, warm, came with whipped salty butter, amazing! The melon salad - crunchy, colorful, rich flavor, balanced flavor, loved!! My -1 star is more so due to the sides and accoutrement being more impressive than the menu of mains that day. It surprised me. Service - our wait staff was very pleasant, but I needed them to be quicker and more observant. We were waiting on waters, silverware, boxes, checks. It was tiring having to waive someone down and then wait for them in a room where we were the only table. We ended up being late for our meet and greet with the farm animals, and it was definitely due to the oddly slow service. Something might have been going on that day bc I found it very strange how everyone kept disappearing. I'm so glad we got to meet the animals!! They were so fun and cute and no one got eaten by an emu which was great! The grounds - absolutely beautiful and I'm so greatful to have gotten time to roam around. This is one of my top recommendations for anybody visiting Jax! It is a fantastic place to come, chill, have a drink or 2, bring your dog, bring the kids to see all the animals and then have a great meal, be it dinner or lunch. My Florida Heat chicken sandwich was VERY good. The chicken was insanely crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. I loved the pickles and the sauce in the sandwich. The fries were good, solid fries- no complaints. I shared half of my partner's BLT and it was okay but don't think it was worth the price tag. A very pricey experience but it is a farm to table style experience so maybe that justifies it. And you must read the fine print when it comes to anything dining and/or event related! The few times I have been here have mostly been for events and I've dined here twice. Eating outdoors on the patio you get to really enjoy a sunset but be prepared for the heat! I recently went to the Low country boil event which was very underwhelming. $50 ticket for unseasoned shrimp boil. I really wish they gave us salt and pepper. I only ate a little bit because it really was pretty tasteless so I didn't even want to eat $50 worth unfortunately. They didn't even give you a drink for free or discounted. Water would have been nice, really anything would've been great. Their alcoholic drinks at the bar will also run you a pretty penny. 2 drinks costs me about $29, which was two glasses of wine. The farm pass purchase is required for walking the grounds, you can't purchase farm passes online. If you want to eat at the restaurant you MUST have a reservation. No outside food or snacks are allowed. Again read the fine print for literally anything you do here to be sure you're not breaking any rules. The grounds are beautiful. I love walking around and enjoying the nature and view. Overall a good experience to come here every once in a while, maybe take out of town friends and family here, and for special occasions to splurge. The farm animals are adorable as well! But I did find their special event very underwhelming and the $50 price tag was not justified. read more

It pains me to give this place three stars. The food was 5 stars and I'd follow the chef to any restaurant. Ambiance is beautiful. The acoustics on the outdoor patio were loud and not ideal. The sweet potato gnocchi had a fantastic chile rojo sauce I loved, more prunes than gnocchi, so would have loved more gnocchi. Husband had the short rib dish and his was great too. We had the apple cornbread and it wasn't too sweet and the pine nut tart. The pine nut tart was interesting. The reason it is 3 stars is the service. It took over five minutes to greet us once seated. After the waiter introduced us we ordered a beer flight and cornbread. The cornbread was delivered and finished before the beer flight, which took 20 minutes. We had a jug of water that we went through and went empty during the meal and were sitting without water or drinks for several minutes. Then we were asked after our food was delivered if we wanted anything so I got wine that the waiter suggested to go with my food and husband got a cider. Again our food was finished before drinks was delivered. Our food always came faster than the drinks. Went to the bathroom and no one was manning the bar. They guarantee lost money tonight because they take 20 minutes a drink order to get out. Husband set out credit card and went to the bathroom. No one came by with the bill. Waited again another 5-10 minutes, and then we had two people come by with the bill at different times. Seemed to be a lack of multitasking/communication. Like when dropping off drinks, get the jug to refill the water. After a table orders dessert, print off their bill ready to go. An hour and a half for 3 courses, only one of those were made to order, is too long. 7:15 reservation, not all tables were full, and left 8:45. It didn't seem like a lack of staff. It just seemed like things were brought out one at a time to tables. No hustle, even after we paid. I would come back again because the food was excellent I just would have to sit somewhere else. Overall service was just painfully slow. Running out of water with a jug provided is pretty bad, pairing wine with a dish but having it take over 15i minutes to get delivered not great. I did get a sorry for that but don't suggest pairing if you can't get it there on time. I'm not sure why drinks took so long when it's only beer and wine. I don't think they were short staffed either I saw at least 6 people working 8 long tables, as a former waiter, it was normal for me to have at least 4 tables at a time. They need another bartender or a better system for drinks. It looks like a management/training issue. read more

This was a phenomenal experience. The crazy part is, due to the time of our reservation..we were unable to experience everything. They have a vineyard on property where the grapes are used for the ciders they serve, the vegetables that are served are grown on property also. Being able to walk the farm is extra but recommended during daylight hours. Johnny was our server and was very knowledgeable of the menu, very prompt and attentive to what we wanted. He was also helpful with providing suggestions and patient...because I was indecisive. Once the decisions were finally made, we decided to begin with the cornbread and a cider flight. I can't remember all the names of the ciders, but they all are good. The flight is only $12, and allows you to try all the ciders they offer. I ended up getting a cup of the smoked watermelon cider and it went great with my meal. For the main course, I ordered the shrimp and rice grits. Featuring rice that's milled right on property. Initially when I heard "rice grits" my first reaction was Eww. Then Johnny explained what they were and how the consistency went well with the pepper jelly that the shrimp is covered with. It was spicy and hella delicious. My table mate ordered the braised beef that literally fell apart because it was so tender. The broccolini was something different but really tasty. It was cold, which is way different for me but the with caramelized onion aioli, pickled pearl onion, crunchy lemon oil & citrus.... I was very much so impressed. The presentation of the meal was phenomenal...along with the beautiful landscape made dinner a picture perfect scenario. Even with the cold temps outside, the tables with the covering...and heaters makes it perfect for outside dining. We finished the night with an apple pie sundae that was decent. I personally would babe made it differently, being that it's designed to be shared ...but it was good and frankly I'd order it again. This is a must visit place. However, after dining here, they have won me over and you can see the rules are designed to enhance your dining experience. They put a lot of work in as a group to make your experience enjoyable. They have more outdoor dining options than indoor. We dined at the big table inside which will seat a party of 8. It sits a little low for my taste but no one else in our party complained. Our server Sam was attentive and knowledgeable of the menu. His explanation of the short ribs led me to order it (let me say that when they tell you it is tender and savory they are not lying). His service was genuine and helpful. Our party ordered a variety of items, while my wife and I don't drink others in our party ordered their house made cider and thoroughly enjoyed them (they have several different kinds). We also ordered the charcuterie board appetizer and corn bread appetizer - both were great and enjoyed by the table. The charcuterie is enough for a group of 6-8. For mains, I ordered beef short rib with carrots, celery puree, fried parsnips and wilted chard and my wife ordered the shrimp and grits. Others ordered the same or the catch of the day (sea bass). As I said earlier the beef was great and my wife's shrimp and grits was hearty and creamy. The business really tries to make sure your entire experience is great: from your initial seating, to the service, to the food prep and the fact that they do not rush you out so they can seat the next group. My Florida heat chicken sandwich was overdone - like the grease was on too high so the outside was well done which made the chicken dry. It takes a lot to make a chicken thigh dry so that was my takeaway. The pasta salad which was the side of the day lacked flavor - like unsalted water bland pasta. I did grab some fries from another plate and those were done well. For the prices they charge, I just don't see the value for the experience. I've been to this restaurant for dinner before and I can honestly say the service was much better and so was the dinner menu. Brunch honestly was disappointing. Starting with the coffee, it was just really watered down - and even the second cup refill was the same. The brunch menu had some interesting and unique savory options. The "Florida Heat" was a take on a "spicy" fried chicken sandwich with a bit of spicy mayo, and a crispy chicken thigh. While the chicken was crispy and the pickles complemented the sandwich well, it wasn't spicy in the slightest and a bit dry. The sandwich was still flavorful though! The "chorizo biscuit" was another interesting take - combining classic biscuits and gravy with chorizo meat. The chorizo was super dry, and oddly had a sweet taste, not the typical spicy taste. The biscuit was definitely homemade, but I felt like the gravy didn't taste like it was - rather sweet for a gravy as well. You can order off the menu items like extra eggs - cooked over easy, medium, or hard. All the ingredients used were definitely farm sourced and fresh produce. If you come for brunch, it would be more for the atmosphere and experience of the beautiful farm view. Maybe different dishes would be better next time! read more

For dinner I had the shrimp and grits, hubby had The Yardbird. Both were very good and great portions. Johnny was very attentive during our visit checking back appropriately.
