It's such a great little treasure in the heart of downtown. If you need help getting your garden started, they are the friendliest and most helpful bunch. A wealth of information. The variety of seeds is endless, and the nursery is beautiful. They sell live back chick's as well as birds and full grown adoptable chickens in the back. This place does not keep their baby duck area clean!! Their bedding was soaked and it was filthy, the ducks were shivering and wet and covered in food and poop. There were too many ducks in the small tote and not properly cared for. There were two ducks that looked to have Wry neck and were severely malnourished. We rescued both of them and when we got home the severely malnourished one unfortunately did not make it. They need to do better! The environment for the baby ducks was horrible. There also was another heat lamp that went out heating other baby chicks and no one cared. read more

Seems like right out of the past with the bare bones type of inside with tubs of chickens and Turkey babies and stuff piled here and there. I picked up a few milkweed plants and some fly traps. The plant area seemed bigger than when I shopped here previously and they have huge banana trees, mostly dwarf sizes bananas. This is not a clean Tractor Supply kind of store. This is really an old style working feed and seed store. They have a seed section which has every type of vegetable seed imaginable. I really wanted to like this place as they seem to have a lot of products to offer, however, I can't give a higher rating due to the condition of the animals on site as well as how dirty it was and I had to dust off cobwebs and mice droppings to get my bag of feed. Tuesday no call bag is in so Wednesday I call and get told employee returned bag of oats to vendor. Then get told employee didn't see special order. I was born and raised here in Jacksonville. I've been shopping at Standard Feed for awhile now. I love this place! When I step into the door, it's like stepping back in time. A simpler time. When men tipped their hats and opened the door for you. When women were ladies and conducted themselves as such. When young people said "yes ma'am" and knew the meaning of manners and respect. When people would stand for the National Anthem. When we all prayed to the same God in church on Sundays. Standard Feed carries everything I need for my home farm. This was my first time visiting a feed store and the staff at Standard made it a great experience! I found their chick schedule on their website and wanted to confirm that they had the chicks I wanted in stock, so I facebook messaged them. They responded quickly and gave me accurate information! Yesterday I went there and picked up the last two Silkie Bantam chicks. I already have a coop with Golden Comets, but I was looking for a more compact, pet-like chicken. I was able to buy a heating lamp, bedding, organic chick feed, grit (for when they're 2 weeks old), and two chicks for under $50. I was pleasantly surprised by the affordable prices and the relative cleanliness of the animals. All the chicks looked healthy and active, as well as the bunnies and guinea pigs. I feel like I got everything I needed to raise my chicks. My only complaint is that they weren't labeled straight-run or pullet. I know it's nearly impossible to tell but a rooster could be problematic. Now I'm just hoping that they're both hens! read more

We've been visiting Standard Feed for a while now, and have always enjoyed the friendly and knowledgeable staff there! We're now "urban chicken farmers" and Standard Feed has been there since day one to advise us along the way to keep our flock happy and healthy! In addition to the live poultry (yes, this is where we purchased our chicks), they also have a selection of other birds for pets (like parakeets) and even hamsters, gerbils and rabbits. They also have food and treats for all of these critters as well as bulk dog treats in many different sizes (which is great for my small dogs, they have perfectly sized mini-treats for purchase by the pound). I have to admit, I kind of turn into a small child and am filled with glee when they have baby ducks for sale! Show me a person who doesn't melt when they see a duckling and I'll show you someone dead on the inside! In the spring and summer they have a large outdoor area filled with potted vegetables and fruit trees. They even had some varieties that I had not seen at the "big box" home improvement stores in town. But if you're more into a "DIY" approach to your farm, they also have a decent variety of bulk seeds for purchase (grains, corn, etc). Note that this place has more of an agriculture bent than a home-gardener focus, but that's exactly what they are! They also have some basic canning and pickling supplies (ball jars, etc). So even if you don't own your own chickens (but especially if you do!) give these guys a visit and get a taste of what good old fashioned customer service and farm-know-how used to be. For some of your agriculture needs, skip the Depot and stay local in the heart of downtown! read more

Standard feed is our go to place for gas for the grill and we always enjoy checking out the cute chicks, rabbits, and other little living creatures they have at the time. We also can get our pet food and medications here. Since we are staying home a lot more these days, we decided to start up a good garden and purchased several plants and seeds here recently. I have a Meyers lemon tree that I purchased last year from the store and it has continued to flourish and produce beautiful lemons so I knew the live plants were good quality. We purchased tomato, peppers, and an assortment of herbs in the live plant nursery and some okra and pea seeds. So many choices it was almost overwhelming for a home garden. They even had plant bags and soil and everything else we needed to get started. My new vegetable garden is growing beautifully and if I was not running out of room to plant more, I would visit this store more often to figure out what else to grow. read more

This is a fun place to visit. It's a little out of the way for me, but when I need to buy seed or other items in bulk, and I have the time, its absolutely the way to go. Our local feed store charges so much more for the same items that it often makes the drive worth it. I tend to get pea, bean, and radish seed in bulk (which we sometimes eat, but mostly use on our lot to create biomass for composting) and I'll get smaller packets of vegetable seeds for eating. In the spring, we've picked up peach, pear and other fruit trees, which are priced very attractively. We also buy bird feed in bulk here. We don't have pets or farm animals, but they've got quite a bit of supplies to cover you here as well. read more

They also have a wide array of seeds and plants here. They also have the cheapest prices for the black plastic containers Ive ever seen. Now that they've moved right across the street and expanded to a bigger location, this feed store smack dab in the middle of an urban area is surprisingly pleasant. The old store felt like a rundown warehouse that sold farm stuff--which it did (but I'm glad their new place is much better). It's been around since 1946 and it's kept the feel of that era even with the new building--which I love. Looking for non GMO seeds so you don't grow Frankenstein food? Right here. Want to start you backyard egg production? This is the place. Need some feed for your adorable Nigerian Pygmy goats? Why you've come to the right place. It's no Pet Smart (and that's why it's super cool) but it has food for your more usual pets too. Guinea pigs and bunnies are always available, a selection of parakeets are on hand and I've gotten all my egg laying ladies here (seasonal). This is not a shopping cart, aisles of pet products store. This is a down home country feed store that the city grew around but Standard Feed kept to its standards and didn't budge from their purpose or place. If you need to get your urban farmer rear in gear, they have what you need. If you embrace sustainable living and like gardens that you can eat, drop by. The people are friendly but no nonsense. They're knowledgeable but not chatty. Order your feed from the front and they'll grab it out of the back and deliver to your car but you gotta ferry your own 40 lb of dog food yourself (cause that product is on the shelves). Having a feed store less than a mile from the middle of a city is endearing to me, especially cause they're not high falutin' about it and have been around since before Jax was touted as the bold new city of the South. read more

Several generations of my family have been buying from standard feed for many years but sadly that will change today. Customer service is non-existent and rude. The prices are extremely high and most of it can be purchased on the internet. They don't keep most items I need stocked.
