So have to say this review is on the process of doing a lease on a storage unit…read more My husband and I in September last year rented a storage unit. I did it all wrong to be honest. I did not go look at it and I did not do much research. We rented from another company, we rented a climate control unit it was in a gated area but the building it was in was never locked. Our unit was broken into in a few months. We asked them to secure the building as they have other locations and the building is secure. The fence around the unit could be climbed. We tried to work with them but had no luck. All that said yesterday we went to Extra Space Storage to look at a unit, find out their security of the units and how secure the units were. As I learned my lesson to not just go online and rent a unit. The experience was amazing the Manager Joseph was a great help. ALL units are indoor and ina. Locked in area no one without access should ever be in there. I felt peoples stuff was very secure, not to say that things won't happen there is always that chance but ai don't feel that it is easy at all for it to happen. We saw the security cameras that are all around inside and we're working an a huge display screen. (Not like our other location that after it was broken into said their cameras have not been working for a while.) These units are all inside the old JC Penny's area or Promenade Mall at 41st and Yale. You drive in the gate inside the building and can get close to your unit or have a drive up unit that you can pull up too. Ours is not a drive up but very close to where you can park. They have carts inside to load and unload your vehicle or storage unit. The lock system they use is a cylinder lock and harder for it to be broken into so that was another security measure I loved.

When my wife and daughter moved out of the unit, I got a call from the manager a few hours later because he saw that there wasn't a lock on our unit, so I know they are watching and patrolling the facility. Canceling was very easy, as he let me do it while on the phone. When I need more room again, I will definitely check here first!

They give you a code specific to you for entering and exiting. There have been two incidents in the last couple of years that prevent me from giving them a higher rating. My unit got broken into and various items were taken. I didn't find out about this until I showed up to find it with a different lock. I was shocked they hadn't reached out to me about it and the lack of information was astounding given that they're supposed to have cameras. They said I had to file a police report if I wanted to get any more details. This was very disappointing so now I keep a better inventory of what I have and don't keep anything valuable. The second incident was the gate not working. The keypad displayed a message saying the network was down. I called the support number since no staff was on site despite it being working hours. They didn't know what the issue was, only that the system was down and that no employees were able to be on site to assist until the following day. I proceeded to panic because I had an event in a couple of hours and I needed to get a lot of items out for it. I told them that was unacceptable and that I would have to try to get in somehow. Thankfully an employee arrived about 30 minutes after and helped me in. It was so stressful. I now try to go at least a day before to make sure this doesn't happen again. The only reason why I don't move my unit is because it's so close to me. When it comes to pricing, it's pretty comparable to other places.

They were friendly enough, but it is definitely not as secure as you would think…read more I went to my unit to pick something up a week or two after storing things there and found that my lock had been replaced. Confused, I go to the front office and discover that someone had BROKEN my lock. Of course, instead of calling me as soon as they found out they decide to just add their own lock and leave me in the dark. At first the lady at the desk said "someone must have done it by accident", but I later find out 2-3 other units had been broken into, and that day I noticed someone repairing a fence there. I understand that break-ins happen, but the way they handled it was completely unacceptable. I went back and called several times to talk to someone about getting the security footage check to see what was stolen, but I kept getting excuses like "it's an outside company, I don't have access to that despite being a manger/owner", as well as different stories from different people. They said they filed a police report but when I filed my own the police something nothing else had been filed for this. Instead of apologizing and trying to make things right they just gave me a new lock and basically shrugged their shoulders and said they couldn't do anything about it. They couldn't even waive my pro-rated fee for my extra three days after the month ended. In fact, when I was paying that fee they ROUNDED-UP the fee from what I had been quoted to 'make the payment easier'. They are completely incompetent and take absolutely no responsibility for the safety and privacy of your belongings on their property. Avoid this place at all costs.

**Review Update September 2024**…read more If I could leave less than a 1 star review.. I would! After calling the Corporate office, I received a call from the manager of Keyport Self Storage in Sherman, TX. The only Texas location for Keyport Self Storage. I was yelled at by the On-Site Manager for, and I quote "calling the corporate office and the management company (Argus) for going behind his back and discussing the issue with them". At which point I was now getting angry and during a heated conversation, I was told; "If I were you I would move out". Toward the end of the conversation the manager told me he could move me to another unit, and even offered to help move all of my belongings to the other unit. No mention of the cost of the new unit, no offer to reduce the price, after paying for over a year at full price on a unit with a broken door. As if I would ever, after all this, let this man help me move or touch my personal items. The conversation ended on a bad note, and still no reply by the Corporate office or by the Management company. I guess no one, (except for the woman named, Cricket.. I'm sorry if I misspelled your name, whom I spoke to on the phone) at the Corporate office or the Management company cares about their customers enough to even respond. Original text below: I secured a 10x10 storage unit at Keyport Self Storage in July 2023, with a standard metal roll up door, however, the door did not work due to the spring mechanism was broken. The door had to be pushed up by hand and propped open, as the entire weight of the door would cause the door to close immediately. I was told that there were no other same size units available, but the site manager told me the company would call a repairman to fix the issue. I have asked on numerous occasions about the repair, only to get the same answer, "the company is aware and is working on it". The company has since installed a new site manager, who initially said the company would fix the issue. After 6 months, his answer changed to " this is an old location and the company does not get things done very fast, but they are working on it" The last response 8/2024, 13 months later was " I have already explained the company's position and I am not going to go over it again' He then stood up from his seated position at his desk and leaned forward toward the counter and toward me in a confrontational demeanor and said in a much lower tone of voice "I am not going to talk to you about this anymore, I have explained this to you several times and you still want answers, the answer is the company will fix the door when they are ready to fix the door, end of story". "You won't get any help if you argue with me over this". I was astonished at his action and his response to my simple question; when will my units door be repaired? It is now 9/2024, 14 months and $864.00 later and still no repairs have been completed, while I have been paying the full rental amount for over a year. This month, September 2024 I have received a notice of an $18 Dollar increase in the monthly rental amount. Much more than just a nuisance increase. No upgrades to the facility have been performed anywhere. This is very unprofessional for a company to charge a premium price for a product that does not work properly.
