Dresses she has made!
Francisco C.

Just wanted to drop an updated review of Griselda and her ladies. This is the kind of small business that makes cities amazing. A Women Latin owned business that does fantastic work at a great price. I have been bringing my clothes her for over a decade and she has never disappointed me. I send all my friends here and would highly recommend her to everyone. She recently altered a suit of mine and it fits perfectly. The jacket and pants look like they were custom made. Made an average off the rack on sale suit look like so much more expensive.

I had a hole in my jeans and they fixed it on time for a fair price. I will definitely be using them going forward.

Very reasonable and good work. Never had an issue with promptness in terms of a garment not being done as promised.

So, for just only $60 and four days later, I returned to grab my jacket which was nicely fixed for me like I'd asked; on top of that; they also cleaned and washed the coat, which left me pleasantly surprised ! I was so overwhelmed with happiness and warmth of kindness of this , I gave a hug to the tailor and wore the jacket immediately afterwards ! Thank you for the efficient and excellent service . I would come back here to get more clothes tailored/fixed if needed.

The place is in hidden area so you might miss the turn driving on the Main Street. The parking lot is wide and some parking. I walked in and the owner is a little sweet Mexican lady. The store is a little small but had a lot of fabric and altered dresses on display. I told her what I needed so she offered me to change so she can see the dress. There is a small curtain dressing room in the corner of the store. After looking at the dress she kindly said it wasn't possible which I figured. But I had a pair of pants I needed to trim and I tried on that. There was a long mirror and she measured the trim height with a clip and asked if it was good height. She quoted me $12 on the hem. I entered all my information on the iPad and got an email confirmation. Three days later, I came back to pick up and she gave it to me. Now my pants are not too long and a good height. The trim looks nice too because I don't see any cuts or string. I say her prices are reasonable.

The first time I had a dress altered to shorten the length of the straps. It was done acceptably although I could feel one side was a bit shorter when I was wearing the dress; however, it was not noticeable in looks. The second time I utilized their services, I was looking to tighten the sash I had for my wedding dress. This would be done by moving the buttons over. I took it to the shop and they suggested that it would be better to not sew it in a straight line parallel to the side as human waists will have a curve. This made sense to me and I still agree with their reasoning. However, I was extremely disappointed with their sloppy work in sewing the buttons on (please see pictures). I am a beginner amateur sewist so I theoretically could have just done this myself, but I received my dress just a few weeks before my wedding and I just preferred to pay someone more experienced to do this. Unfortunately I felt it was money wasted as I ended up redoing it. I think their work is passable and low cost, but I've visited seamstresses that have work that is far higher quality for not much higher of a price.

One i still can use, she told me to buy a new one and come back to redo it, no thanks, I'll take the one that i think i can use. She kept one shirt i kept the other at no charge. Why Griselda? Why? Have you been touched by the glitz of Yelp and you don't want to sew anymore? Whatever the reason you have lost respect and at least one customer.

An update. Griselda is doing so well she has now moved into her own space. She's not sharing with a…read morehair salon any more! Griselda is a hidden gem. The quality of her work is very very good. You won't even know the item has been tailored when she is done. You need an original hem on jeans? - she is the best I've been to so far. You need a suit to hug you just right? She's the woman. She must have the eyes of a hawk to get those seams to line up so perfectly! Griselda used to work for Nordstrom's tailoring - and you'll see her awards up on the wall. So I definitely am a fan of the quality of Griselda's work, and if by chance something isn't quite right she will gladly fix it - often times on the spot while you wait! But, there are a couple of caveats to using her. First, be explicit about what you want. She has a little bit of an accent and sometimes I find her a little difficult to understand. There were a couple of times she had to re-do items. Forgot to keep the cuff one time, needed to shorten something just a little bit more. But like I said she will gladly fix - and often on the spot while you wait. BTW watching her take it apart and fix it in a matter of minutes is fascinating! But I should also mention that I am unusually short and petite and I tend to take in a dozen or more items at a time - so instructions sometimes get confused between items. Also, most tailors underestimate how small I am. I think the general rule is to ere on the side of a little big. For me, it's not uncommon after the work is done that just a bit more needs to be taken up or taken in. So if you are just taking one item in every once in awhile - then you can disregard this comment. She's a one man-shop (maybe not literally, but pretty much), and she literally shares space with a hair salon. They kind of blocked off this room, where she works from. It is a separate space with a storage area for her tailoring, sewing machines and a small changing room. It's not as weird as it sounds - but I was a little confused the first time I went. Her hours are 9-4 M-F and 9-6 Sat. I've only gone to her on Saturdays - and her hours on Sat are a little "fluid". I think M-F she is a little more stable, but definitely call her before you head over there on a Sat - there have been times that she was not open or was doing a half day. But if she isn't there that day, she'll offer to meet you at a schedule time if she can. Did I mention one-man shop? Basically, you almost feel like you are going to your friend's mom who happens to be a tailor. (Griselda has met me on a Saturday while getting ready for a wedding with big rollers in her hair. haha!) But instead of meeting at her house, you meet at a hair salon. As shady as this sounds I promise you it isn't. She does terrific work. Because I am so small and short (no I'm not a "little person" but pretty darn close), I am always on the hunt for good tailors. Griselda was the 3rd tailor I tried in Sacramento before I was satisfied. Why not 5 stars? Because no one compares to my hometown favorite Timmy the Taylor in Boston.

She is incredibly bright and insanely talented. She is friendly and personable. When I went to the second fitting to pick up my dress, I was truly stunned. Doing a quick Yelp search, CJ Sewing popped up as one of the top rated alterations establishments in Elk Grove. I immediately scheduled an appointment for the following day. Since I was in such a frenzy, I totally overlooked the instructions in Ms. Jackson's (business owner) appointment confirmation email (the email states that you should bring a long sleeve shirt, a belt, and dress shoes if you're having a suit altered). When I showed up to the establishment, I was warmly greeted by Ms. Jackson and her cute furry friend- Sir Winston. As fate would have it, my suit jacket did not require altering; therefore, the belt and dress shoes that I had on were sufficient. Ms. Jackson is definitely a wealth of knowledge and respectfully shared with me that the slim fit suit pants that I had were not appropriate for my athletic build (slim waist & thick quads). However, she walked me through the alterations that she would make that would complement my physique. On the expected pickup date, Ms. Jackson informed me that she would need additional time and could drop the pants off to me later that afternoon . This was not a problem considering that I dropped the pants off at the last minute. Also, I really appreciated her communication. As promised, Ms. Jackson dropped the pants off and they were a perfect fit. Thank you CJ Sewing!

I tried CJ Sewing because of the positive Yelp reviews, but unfortunately my experience was very…read moredifferent. I brought in my maid-of-honor dress for my sister's destination wedding. The color was discontinued, so I asked about adding a corset back and a hem. I was quoted over $375 for those alterations. When I asked about a first-responder discount (because my fiancé is one), she responded by asking whether he was the one with the dress. The comment felt dismissive of the impact first-responder life has on a whole family. I then asked about a graduate-student discount, and she began asking several personal questions about my education. I even offered to show my student ID, to which she said she was "just trying to make conversation" and that she would take $50 off--but the exchange still felt uncomfortable and unprofessional. She scheduled me to return in two weeks for the first fitting, where I would try on the corset and we would mark the hem. However, when I arrived, the corset wasn't completed. She explained she had difficulty finding a matching back panel and ribbon, which I understand since the color was discontinued. What concerned me was that she hadn't sourced materials ahead of time and didn't offer alternative solutions (such as lace) until I prompted her. She even suggested using fabric from the third layer of my dress for the back panel--something that would clearly be visible in photos--and only agreed it wasn't a good idea after I pointed it out. During the first fitting, I also told her that the corset was pinching my back and I didn't like the way it looked. She said nothing and offered no explanation. I later learned that with a corset, you're supposed to shift your back toward the sides to prevent pinching--something she failed to mention, and possibly didn't know. I had also repeatedly struggled with the straps since my first appointment, and instead of offering to re-sew them, she recommended adhesive. When I asked about simply re-stitching them, she hesitated and commented about my "budget," which felt judgmental and unprofessional. She then quoted $40. Because of the missed deadline, lack of proactive solutions, and overall unprofessional communication, I decided not to continue the alterations and returned to pick up my dress. At pickup, I told her I would pay for the work she had completed and compensate her for her time marking the hem. She initially agreed, but then tried to charge me the full cost of the corset--even though it was unfinished. She also tried to charge me for a hem that was never sewn (just pinned). After going back and forth--and telling her I wasn't there to argue--she charged me $25 for the 30 minutes she spent marking the hem and the partial corset work. I ultimately paid $150 for half a corset and pins she removed. Overall, this was a stressful and disappointing experience, and I cannot recommend this business.
