We went there on a Saturday morning for breakfast, it was not crowded so were able to get a table right away. The server was so sweet and really took the time to explain all the menu items to us. They have lots of deals going on depending on the day you go. For appies I got their pompano fish fry which was a crispy fish fry with lots of spices and coconut. It was really good! If you don't like bones in your fish, I would recommend their apollo fish. My fiance got their mysore masala dosai, it was really good but the dosa wasn't crispy. I got their $7 deal that came with one dili, one medu vada, and one sada dosa. It was such a steal and a lot of food! I thought their sambar was a little watered down. But the flavours of the food was still pretty good.

Looking on Yelp, JJ Dosai looked well reviewed, so we decided to give it a try. It's a very non descript place on Fraser. We parked right in front and walked in near opening time. We were the first customers, so were quickly seated. Given the size of the space, they didn't have many tables. All the tables were placed along side the walls, so there was a lot of empty space in the middle of the restaurant. Looks very much a like a no-frills family run restaurant. We tried: - Plain Dosai: Very good. The very reason I wanted to try this place, the dosa was large and crisp. Sambar and chutneys were OK. - Butter Chicken Dosai: Very good, with butter chicken added. My kids enjoyed it. - Samosa: OK. Very average, resembling a lot of other samosa's I've had. - Vadai: OK. Again, quite average. Service was very pleasant. The service was very polite, and checked up on us frequently to make sure everything was OK. Overall, a nice visit. The dosa/dosai was the best part, and they do a good job at a reasonable price.

They have so many different dosas (staple south Indian breakfast dish), I tried their cone dosa from their kids menu because their normal dosas are so huge! Their cone dosa came with two types of chutney - coconut and tomato both were good. It also comes with sambar (curry) which was much better than many other places, it wasn't watery and had good flavours. My friend got their lamb vindaloo dosa which had lamb vindaloo filling in the dosa, it was spicy but I loved it!! For appetizer we got their fried bell peppers, so unique but pretty delicious. We also got their sev puri chaat which was pretty good too, but not as spicy. Their service was pretty fast! We were a group of 10 people but we were seated right away on a Sunday afternoon and everything was served very quickly. Would recommend :)

We dropped in on a Friday evening (7:30pm). Service is no frills but one of the only places I've seen that gives you the option to tip 5%. Menu consists of appetizers, soups, chef specials, dosa, uthappam, curries, vegetarian speciality, Indo Chinese and biriyani. Two weekday specials; Tuesday any dosas ($8.99) and Friday any biriyani ($11.99). We were asked for spice level, opting for medium. - Eggplant curry ($13.50) - all their curries come with rice and paratha. Couple of nice chunks of eggplant. Curry was okay but didn't make me want to keep on going back for more. - Madras spice fish curry ($15.99) - fish pieces were tender, but curry was too similar in flavour to the eggplant. - Chicken biriyani ($11.99 Friday special) - decent amount of chicken but the rice was dry. Had to add the raita to soften things up. - Mandurai chicken kothu paratha ($16.99) - easily the worst dish of the night. The kothu paratha was dry, bland and uninspiring. We barely ate a third. Maybe stick with MS's dosas instead. 2.5 stars.

I did call to make a reservation just in case but in the end was not needed - I believe that is the only way to reserve to ensure you don't need to wait for a table. I got the fishhook chowder and the squimp toast. Fishhook chowder was decent - felt a bit watered down as I was expecting a stronger spice at minimum, but also not too salty. A bit watery than I expected. But I can still taste notes of the coconut milk and herbs so it could've been a bit better. The squimp toast is amazing - this is a must get. It's a combo of Humboldt squid and shrimp, both of which carried the flavors forward in the toast. And it is quite crispy. It's a fairly substantial dish at a relatively good price so this is actually a lot better than the fishhook chowder that people keep hyping about. Service is good as water refills are apparent. It feels more a fast casual than a more formal sit down, but prices are great and reflective as such.
