Lasted me an entire night of surf fishing and losing my shrimp to a bunch of bastard crabs too afraid to be dragged from the surf. They knew I'd Old Bay their asses because I hail from Baltimore. They just took the shrimp and ran for the hills...err, sand? Wherever crabs go. The staff didn't mind that I rudely showed up 5 minutes before they closed, and were super fast about ringing me up and getting me out the door so they could close this cool little shop up for the night. Tons of poles, reels, rigs, hooks, etc. Tons of bait choices, including live bait (like worms and minnows).

They WOULD NOT exchange the clearly defective fishing pole! Instead the worker who sold me the pole 1 hour prior accused me of getting sand in the reel! After going to this bait shop for the past 3 years, I will take my business elsewhere and anyone who wants to have reliable fishing equipment for vacation should to!

The woman who met us was super kind and gave us lots of great local recommendations and helped us through the choices at sign in! Jonny, Charlie and Drake were champs! All SUPER kind and patient with our questions and taught us a lot about how higher altitude hang gliding works. We were also interested in they were eager to share their knowledge! The actual ride up, in the sky and descent, could not have been more smooth and professional and comfortable, and one of a kind lifetime experience! It really is like being a bird! The Pit has now become a long-time fixture in Kill Devil Hills. I remember when it opened. In the…read morebeginning it was just a club that would let kids under 21 so they had somewhere to go listen to bands, play games, and hang out. Then they expanded to the surf shop and built a separate building. Now they have Boardriders Grill. In the main building you'll find the "hang out" part. Downstairs on the ground floor is a stage and venue for bands and parties. On the main floor, there's a dining area and small bar. On the top floor there's some video games, pool, and chairs to chill in. Sunday is Euronight with electro/house music spinning and Thursday is Mug Night. At The Pit out back the surf shop keeps expanding so I can't even keep track of all that's offered. I will tell you that they keep up to date with all the rad stuff locals and surfers need to keep up with the island image and life. They offer board rentals, surf lessons, lots of cool stuff. One thing that's really cool is that they're home to "Skim City" which is a sick skimboarding brand. My brother used to be sponsored by them and my family was never short on encounteres with the Skim Crew! A boardsport lifestyle comes as naturally as going barefoot on the beach and The Pit acknowledges that. The Boardriders Grill has come a long way to have a following of its own. $1 tacos from 4 to 6pm and all day on Tuesdays always draw a crowd! I don't know how else to describe it but how they do -- a surf-inspired menu. My Mom loves their fish tacos and my friends and I can barely handle their burritos! Spice and gargantuan size with fresh fixin's. I love that you can eat inside or out on the front deck and the service is friendly and fast. You never know you'll run into at The Pit. Steve Pauls and Ben Sproul have done a pretty good job at keeping it up for locals and visitors alike though. Stop in and hang out...you'll have a good time.
