    Goodie isle...

What a fantastic Supermarket right on the doorstep to my daughters apartment. I guess I'll be doing the buying when I come visit as this store is a little too expensive for their student budgets and bland processed diet. I on the other hand loved it. They have a great all round selection of fresh meat & veggies. All organic here which is great. And after watching Food Inc the other night I will never again buy anything but organic foods again and lucky for me I can choose that option. They have ready made & freshly baked pizza, a little cafe, a butcher on site and very few name brands that you usually see in the supermarkets. It's pricier but you get what you pay for. The staff were super helpful and yes they do have sales. If you are astute you can certainly get some deals. Stop in, it's a trove of healthy goodies.

A grocery store committed to healthy options. Overall, it's nice. The prices are higher than other grocery stores. Trail mix, beans, candy, spices, herbs, nuts, beans, seeds, grain--all can be bought in bulk. They have natural makeups. They carry organic soaps, beeswax, shea butter, and body scrubs. The deli department has a nice selection of meat. There's a hot bar, olive bar, and salad bar. There's also a decent size dining area.

It's nice to have an Earth Fare in town, especially when Summerville is lacking any specialty health foods stores, like Fresh Market, Whole Foods, etc. even Trader Joes. Growing up in NC, Southern Season was always one of our favorite stores. Instead of driving all the way to MP for those listed above (except FM), this is a good alternative. Food: They offer a lot of ready to eat and nicely prepared good eats. They have an olive bar, freshly made pasta, salad bar, hot food bar including three kinds of rice (white, brown, and another one I forgot the name), pizza bar, sushi freshly made and another prepped food bar (requires cooking). In addition, they have a large selection of cheeses, meats, nuts, pasta, just to name a few. Lastly, the cookie and desert bar is a major hit, at least for my kids:) Service: They have nice, friendly staff who are willing to assist and answer any questions. The ones we dealt with all were extra nice, helpful, and have positive attitudes. Price: Good. They offer weekly specials which can be quite reasonable for those on a budget. In addition, check out their daily specials that are unbeatable! Location: Located right off of Main Street close to i26. You can pick up your groceries and goodies, as well as your pet food next door at the pet supermarket. Plenty of parking. The only downfall is the area gets pretty congested during rush hour. Unique products: They are known to offer some unique items not typically found in normal grocery stores or retail shops, like essential oils, gourmet food products, $1 baguettes... Atmosphere: The aisles can be a little tight when they are busy. Eating Area: They have a small area to eat or if you want simply want to relax a bit. I bet they have wifi.

It was more than I hoped for in a hot bar. Absolutely delicious!!!

If they had a salad bar, I wouldn't have to cheat on them and go to the Lowe's Foods! But they don't. So I do. This Publix is just ok to me mainly because of the layout. The produce section is on the opposite side of the store from the bakery and deli. Makes no sense to me. The one on D Road that I e been shopping at for 20 years, and still use for my prescriptions, has the correct layout. Bakery, deli, produce. All aisle 1. The other thing that I'm not a fan of, and I believe this is all Publix, the self checkout doesn't take cash. Cash is still king in my world! But hey, we can't always get what we want. See you tomorrow Publix!

I must…read moreadmit as a former chef then afterwards living in Kansas City and Austin TX for 25 years and frequenting large grocery stores with almost all of the things I've needed under one roof; I've been very disappointed with almost all the grocery stores here. Publix is about as good as it gets for most of their products but for the more adventurous tastes, it falls a bit short. Lets start with the food service area. I recall my love for their Boar's Head roast beef sandwiches, they were phenomenal! So, when I moved back I made it a priority, big mistake. The veggies were a bit older and the bread very hard. The meat was ok but overall it was lacking. The fried chicken was extremely salty while the "home fries" were cold. Also, the baked chicken as of 11am seemed to be sitting for a LONG time. I understand this is hard to gage but just reporting. I believe a better selection would have been nice. As for the bakery, some of their products are suspect. For instance, the cream cheese Danish had a funky flavor while the "fresh made" CC cookies were extremely dry. Next their selection of cakes and/or pies is limited as well. Moving into the meat selection, I was expecting more. Their options for ribeye were disappointing to say the least. I'm talking about in the display case, not from the butcher. Now I will say the butcher was extremely nice when I wanted some Osso Bucco, even taking some out the freezer and cutting it for me! Customer service is important to them. Publix is also pretty far behind on seasonal or promotional products. So, if you like the "monster cereals" like Booberry, I'm still waiting for it while 2 other chains already have it. New Dorito chips and Mt Dew flavors face the same challenges. That said they do have a good display for suggestive sales and the shelves are well stocked. As for the produce, they have a somewhat large and diverse selection. The mushroom selection is sparse. Want to pick up some woodear, loose shiitake, Oyster, Enoki, etc? Not here my dear, although they do have shitake packaged. I've hunted for exotic fruits such as dragon fruit, Buddha's hand, Star fruit etc but they don't carry it. Otherwise they carry the standard fair which is more in bulk than variety. My overall assessment of Publix is it works well for it's target group, middle class SC families looking for good prices on food that is pretty standard with having some "elegances" spread out enough to allow those who are adventurous to try something new. The shelves are well stocked, the environment clean and safe, and house made items such as breads, tortillas, soups, etc are decent. Publix is a good grocery store for the masses.

I'm going to try the beer, because I can buy in recyclable growlers - and it's tasty. But the attribute I like best is that while it's not silent, there's the usual hubbub, it's quiet enough to have a normal volume conversation with a friend or a group. I must admit as a former chef then afterwards living in Kansas City and Austin TX for 25 years and frequenting large grocery stores with almost all of the things I've needed under one roof; I've been very disappointed with almost all the grocery stores here. So, after my mother convinced me to stop by Lowes I was pleasantly surprised with a chain that "gets it" here in town. Walking in I found the place to be extremely clean with some of the nicest employees I've come across since being back in town. Moreover, they're rather smart; strategically placing fresh baked focaccia bread close to the entrance, enticing one's stomach to influence the power of the purse. Next, I challenge anyone to resist their smoked foods as the air is heavy with the sweet perfume. Please note that Lowes carries a LOT of items customers will NOT find at other stores. From the towns best selection of cheeses, rack of lamb, watermelon radish and on the list continues, I encourage all those reading this to shop this store for those harder to find items. As for instore made items, I've tried a few and would like to report my limited findings. First, I bought a loaf of olive focaccia bread a noted weakness of mine. I found it be pillow-y moistness, bouncing back to the touch with a good fragrance however the amount of rosemary in it will repel even the most persistent of demons (odd refence). I bought another loaf of parmesan and I had the same issue, just way to rosemary which I happen to enjoy. I wish they had an alternative without the herb but other than that it's awesome. Another success in the bakery was the Bavarian donuts which I highly advise not buying as they're downright addictive. Soft, moist and a perfect chocolate to cream ratio these things are illegal in 5 surrounding counties! As for protein, I broke down and got the smoked chicken wings and macaroni salad for lunch. Again, this would be a resounding success if it weren't for one overwhelming ingredient; in this case salt. I'm of the belief they marinated these wings in the dead sea as it tasted as if the cap to the salt shaker fell off when seasoning these wings. Otherwise, these wings hit on all notes as they were moist and had the perfect amount of smoke. As for the mac salad, everyone has their version of what are perfect ingredients so I'll just add this, they perfectly cooked the pasta. That is to say the noodles weren't soggy or cooked to death; rather al dente which is perfect for the summertime favorite. As for addins I think they're ok but that's very subjective. Again, a certified hit. I did grab the sushi one day but I'm not a fan of grocery store sushi for the simple fact that the rice needs to be warm and the fish cold as it creates a contrast in the mouth. That said I got the fried shrimp sushi and it was just like any other store, not great. Nothing taken away as I realize most people are happy with this. My point is if I'm craving sushi a grocery store isn't the first thing that comes to mind as a true restaurant has better quality fish and a more diverse menu. To summarize Lowes is a great place to obtain those harder to find ingredients with the best in store created foods among all the competitors out there. The people here are very nice and willing to help however please note you'll need to obtain a card to get the discounts, the one down side of Lowes, is they're a little more expensive. However, "it's a small price to pay" for leveling up on the quality meter. This is my favorite grocery store in town and it's not even close.

Tons of parking, of course, it is a large grocery chain. Parking is shared with other businesses in the area. The store parking lot and inside were extremely clean and well laid out. Granted, this is a new location, but you can see the hard work that the team put in to keep the store looking fantastic. Don't you love it when a business team member goes out of their way to make things right? That's exactly what the very nice lady at the bakery did this morning (I did not catch her name). She went out of her way to find me some bran muffins, and cracked open a package that had already been sealed from their bakery, Just so that I could have that Muffin! How cool is that?! I ordered groceries online and it was raining when I went to pick them up. She told me just to pull my car in the front and she put all of them in the back for me in the pouring rain. On top of that she sensed that I had been going through something. She reached in her pocket and gave me a little good luck charm. It was a cute little rubber frog. She gave me a big hug and told me that I was loved and she didn't know what I was going through but that it was going to be OK. Not what you expect when you go to the grocery store. The kindness is so touching and overwhelming. It can be a cruel world in times but people like Melanie that you randomly find at a Food Lion on Ladson will make you believe in humanity and God's love again

Located in a relatively easy to get in and out of location, depending on the time of day and…read moredirection, this Food Lion is a condensed grocery store. I'll be up front I've been twice, once in 2012 as I used to live half way across the US and last week as I recently moved back "home". After living in Texas and Kansas City I've grown accustom to larger and more robust stores with plenty of options like: full-service restaurants, different service stations like Chinese made to order, subs, desserts, you get the idea. Thus, it's somewhat hard for me to change my desired mindset as when I go the grocery store, I like to be able to get everything. For some reason this place depressed me walking in as if the ambiance is muted and dull; devoid of life. Psychologically this can and will affect shopping habits as normally I like to slowly wonder around and engage in impulse buying. No music, lack of interesting displays such as beverage displays stacked up like a castle, food I'm not familiar with and so on. After moving through to the produce section, I was unable to get things such as dragon fruit, the chives were old and decrepit, but at least the most of the other limited options were fresh. Moving down the bakery and dessert isle I was searching for something interesting to grab on the go. Needless to say, a lack of selection meant I wasn't swayed to buy anything as I thought "been there, done that." Curiosity did strike my fancy as I looked over the meat selection and my heart sank as I didn't see a great selection of ribeye with a more generous cap, no lamb, limited pork and poultry options. I found myself wanting to speed through just to be done with the experience. I did zip through the chips and little Debby isles as they had new items that came out at the beginning of the month, alas they weren't available. Checking out the clerk was extremely nice however she hit me with "do you have our card?" I don't like having to sign up for a card b/c just have the prices discounted up front instead of baiting the customer to become a member unless you're those uber big places. Finally, I tried to leave the way I entered and it's a one way. This irritated me as it's an inconvenience to walk around (I know I'm being petty walking another 15 or so yards, but still, it's the principal of the matter). As of writing this, I asked my mother if she liked the place and her opinion was completely different as she likes the size b/c she can get in and out quicker, the one-way door apparently was made b/c of shop lifting and she has a member's card. This is why yelp reviews are beneficial as we're all wired differently and no one experience fits all. For me I wasn't impressed and the only way I'd return is if I was in a rush and the item is common enough to know they would have it. This Food Lion isn't for me, but that's not to say it won't serve others well.
