I waited a few days before writing this review because I've been in a full blown relationship conflict with Earl's Kitchen + Bar. On one hand, this place is gorgeous. Like "let's take pictures before we eat because this patio belongs in a lifestyle magazine" gorgeous. Las Olas energy at its finest. The outdoor seating is fantastic, the atmosphere feels upscale without being stuffy, and honestly, the food was outstanding. Which is why this hurts. We came for Mother's Day brunch and intentionally avoided rushing over for happy hour pricing because we wanted a relaxed meal. Adult decision. Responsible. Mature. Mistake number one apparently. Started with the charred corn and avocado dip and I need whoever created that dish to be recognized with some sort of civic award. Ridiculously good. One of those appetizers where you immediately start calculating whether licking the bowl in public is socially acceptable. Then came the steak and eggs discussion. My wife and I were both looking at the steak and eggs listed on the menu for $26.75. Our waiter explained that the standard steak was only four ounces and casually suggested upgrading to a six ounce or eight ounce cut instead. Now listen carefully because this is where the plot twists into a financial thriller. At no point during this conversation was pricing for the upgrade mentioned. And shame on me for not asking. That part is absolutely on me. But the suggestion was delivered with the same casual energy as "would you like fries with that?" So I upgraded to the eight ounce. My wife went with the six ounce. She also had a margarita she loved. We skipped dessert because we were stuffed and, as it turns out, accidentally entering a luxury cattle futures market. Then the handheld payment machine arrived. $175. I stared at that screen like it had just informed me my mortgage was due immediately. Turns out those extra six ounces of sirloin between the two plates carried an upcharge that could finance a small fishing boat. Roughly ten dollars an ounce for the upgrade. Somewhere, a Wagyu cow laughed at me from a distance. And look, before anybody jumps in, yes... I should have asked. Lesson learned. But restaurants also know exactly what they're doing when upgrade pricing gets floated around casually without numbers attached. There's a difference between upselling and a sneak attack. Which makes this review frustrating because I genuinely loved almost everything else. The food was excellent. The atmosphere was fantastic. Service was friendly. But nothing tanks the ending of a brunch quite like feeling blindsided by steak math. Pro tip for future diners: If they suggest the upgraded steak, ask the price immediately. Ask twice. Possibly get it notarized. Three stars because I really do want to come back someday. But right now I still feel like I got hit with a reverse happy hour. read more

We had a few burgers, corn and avocado dip, spicy Calabrese pasta and the tortellini. I tried everyone's meal and I was really impressed with the consistency of quality in each dish. Came here Saturday night with a friend during peak hours and it was packed, about an hour wait, but we were able to grab seats at the bar right away, which worked out perfectly. For appetizers, we had the sticky Korean ribs and Szechuan shrimp & pork dumplings, and honestly... incredible. Tons of flavor with just the right amount of spice. Pricing was around $14-$20, but portions were solid so no complaints there. We split the carne tacos (comes with two plus chips and salsa). Heads up, the chips and tacos both have a spicy kick, but everything was super flavorful. The steak was cooked medium rare and I don't usually go for that, but it was actually so good. Decided to try this spot after a show at the Broward Center. Their full menu is available late night which is a huge plus. The hostess was very friendly and quickly seated us even though the place was pretty busy at 10:45pm on a Thursday night. The server was just as friendly and on point the entire night. Another bonus, their happy hour is 10pm until closing time (1am). I got the Earl's old fashioned and it was tasty. We got their maple glazed tomahawk pork chop and the Korean beef bibimbap for our entrees. The kurobuta pork chop was HUGE! A very impressive presentation and it was cooked perfectly. Tender, lean and juicy! It came with a bacon jam on top, mashed potatoes, broccoli rabe, and a spicy peppercorn jus. The bibimbap came in a huge bowl that was super hot. The server said to pour the desired amount of gochujang sauce, that's served on the side, and mix the bowl well with two huge spoons that come with it. The concept is that the rice on the bottom becomes crispy from the heat and will likely burn if you don't mix it (like I said the bowl was super heated). This was a delicious experience if you like crispy rice. The entire time I ate the rice more parts became crispy from sitting on the bottom. The ingredients in the bowl were just as tasty! Kimchi, carrots, tender beef, ginger soy mushrooms, broccoli rabe pieces, and a soft egg! The rooftop part was closed when we got there due to a private party. I'm in town visiting friends and family this weekend, so a friend and I stopped by for Happy Hour, last night. A Friday. Their Happy Hour menu had a decent amount of offerings, both food and cocktail wise. Unfortunately, the flavors aren't there. One exception to this rule is the steak frites - the steak was cooked nicely - we ordered it medium rare. Very tender and seasoned well. We opted to order a second plate after we finished, however the chef may have gotten a little heavy-handed with the salt this time around, but still tasty. This order was accompanied by truffle fries & a dipping sauce. All in all, a good plate. In addition to the steak frites, we ordered a couple of the baja tacos, crispy rice with salmon, 6 oysters & a couple of dirty martini's. The baja tacos & crispy rice with salmon were fine, the martini's were also just fine, but the oysters however, we an absolute no. Presentation was okay, the oysters were on the smaller side, which is acknowledged, they were east coast oysters. Where on the east coast? Not sure. In any case, for $3 a pop, (for Happy Hour, that's an insane price - but we knew that when we ordered, so that part is on us). With that, we were hoping for a decent bunch of oysters. Not the case, to the point we left two on the plate. Note, the oysters were barely shucked, so you had to completely remove the oyster from the shell yourself prior to endulging. It's like the chef started the process, then just gave up. One oyster had the amount of meat the size of a dime. And that's being overly generous. Our waitress seemed unlhased when we mentioned the barely existent oyster & said, "they're small, they're east coast oysters" - I'm sure that comment is on repeat. The main dining area is more family oriented. The roof top seems more relaxing and calm. Looks like a great spot for a stress relieving lunch. We ordered from the dine out Fort Lauderdale 3 course menu. It comes with an appetizer, main, and dessert. The appetizers are 1/2 size appetizers. The mains appear to be full size portions. And dessert is a choice of a chocolate lava cake with ice cream or a cheesecake slice. The steak was lacking a bit of the steak flavor. It was otherwise tender and cooked to my liking. The truffle tortellini was missing the truffle flavor but the blackened shrimp was excellent. Both desserts were delicious but the cheesecake is likely to be one of the best cheese cakes I've ever had. My aperol spritz was delicious with a unique refreshing flavor. Now to the taste test, starting with the ribs; they were amazing. Good portion size, tasty and a little spicy but very good. Earl's has quickly become my "go to" restaurant on Las Olas with it's food, service and ambiance. Given I live in the neighborhood, it's a great place to meet up with friends or just to sit at the bar and enjoy their amazing happy hour (3-6pm weekdays and after 10pm) and talk to the many interesting people who stop in. Know that the happy hour pricing is only at the downstairs bar. The ambiance is beautiful with a great rooftop area that is the place to sit if you can get a seat. Also know they can't guarantee rooftop seating but you can always ask about it when you check in for your reservation. On a nice night, when they roll back the roof, it is just a terrific place to sit outside and enjoy your dinner. The menu at Earls is varied with everything from sushi and salads to fish, burgers and steak. Some of my favs include the pork chop, the sea bass, and the crispy sushi and steak combo, and for appetizers those spicy korean ribs and the pork and shrimp dumplings (be still my heart! I think I dream about those dumplings and hate it when they run out). They also serve brunch on the weekends and while I haven't been yet, it is definitely on my list to hit up soon. Service is usually spot on with someone greeting you as soon as you are seated with recommendations on the menu and noting any changes or additions to the menu. I also like the crowd that Earl's attracts. During season, it's a lot of tourists like most places on Las Olas. But now that many of the snowbirds have left, it's become more of a neighborhood place and I usually run into someone I know when sitting at the bar. I do have a small pet peeve about this place though. And that's with the women's restrooms. Given this was a brand new building, they could have done anything and they chose to put all the restrooms upstairs and have only 3 stalls for the women. Granted there is an elevator or stairs to get up to the restroom, but to only have 3 stalls (with one out of commission on my last visit) in a restaurant of this size makes me think a male architect designed the space.
