Baked chicken and Baked Chicken & Dressing, collard greens, macaroni and cheese with cornbread
    Angela T.

Since this is Mother's Day weekend and my sons are out of state, I decided to stop at Eagles restaurant today for a Pre Mother's Day dinner. I tried the baked chicken with cornbread dressing, collard greens, macaroni and cheese with cornbread. Delicious food enough for leftovers tomorrow. The customer service is great. Ambiance of the restaurant is calm. A few booths are available to dine in and watch television if you want to enjoy delicious soul food lunch and dinner.

I came here after reading about it in the book "Birmingham Food" by Emily Brown. Beef tips, rice with gravy, dressing, collards, and cheese biscuits. All hearty portions with great taste. My favorite was the beef tips mixed with gravy and rice. The beef tips were very tender and savory. The dressing was a little watery for my liking, but that wasn't too big of a deal since it still tasted good. Good bang for your buck at $11.

Eagle's eagle's eagle's!!! When I say this is the best soul food restaurant in Birmingham I MEAN IT!!! I first heard about eagle's in a news paper article back in 2006....guess what....I've been a loyal custom every since!!!! Sundays is my fav day to go as they have chittlins lol yes I love me some chittlins (don't judge me lol)!!! Make sure you make it there early on Sunday as the line starts 30mins yes 30mins before they open!!! Online ordering is available but you still have to stand in line to get inside. I PROMISE IT WILL BE WORTH THE WAIT!! P.s. BE READY FOR A NAP AFTER YOU EAT!!

Overall i rate this a 10/10. i went maybe like a week ago, and the inside was closed. we had to stand in line outside and order to go. the wait was a tad bit longer than what i expected, but nothing too bad. the food was great, everything tasted amazing. also, i was amazed at how much food i was given. i was able to eat off my plate for 2 days, and still could not finish it all. you will definitely get your money's worth.

Passing thru Birmingham on my way to New Orleans. A real down south Mom and Pop shop with all of the must haves - mac and cheese, collard greens, bbq chicken and sweet tea. And I believe we payed $10 per hot plate. If ever back in Birmingham, we'll be back.

In my humble opinion, most African-Americans who still have great cooks alive in their family don't visit soul food restaurants often. Why you ask? Because many of us have tasted better and don't want to pay for a meal that isn't as good as we can get at home. If you want a great meal, you don't go yelping soul food restaurants, you crash a relatives or good friends dinner on a Sunday! It is my experience that Black women who are amazing cooks love extra company! Always seems to be room at the table for one more. However, as these matriarchs pass on and scoring a free meal isn't an option, places like Eagles can hit the spot. THE SCENE My family and I came here on our way home from our Thanksgiving trip to Dallas, Texas. I've known about Eagles for nearly a decade, but have not managed to find time to pay them a visit. If ever I was going to do it, today was the day! So as to not be exhausted from the 13 hour drive home, we stopped to spend the night in Meridian, MS. We checked out of our hotel just after 8am to tackle the final leg to Atlanta. Our bellies began to growl about 30 minutes before we were to enter the borders of Birmingham and decided to stop. Eagles immediately came to mind, however, we were about 1 hour too early. So I decided to check out a covered bridge and grotto just north of the city to kill some time. That took longer than I thought it would, but worked in our favor because by then we were nice and hungry. THE EXPERIENCE DATE: Sunday, November 28th, 2017 @ 12:15pm MUST TRY: Baked Chicken, Oxtails, candied yams DIDN'T LIKE: Cornbread muffins, dressing The restaurant is tiny and the area seems to be part residential/part industrial. Several abandon lots with uncut grass and trash were nearby. Inside there are a hand full of booths and a small order counter near the entrance. This created an ingress/egress traffic jam as people entering the restaurant are immediately confronted with people waiting to place an order. Locals seem to know the rhythm and routine, so everyone is polite about stepping aside to let newcomers reach the end of the line at the back of the restaurant. Staff is nice, but kinda that 'matter-of-fact' sort of polite. They are by no means rude, but there is no time to be super-friendly when the line is growing by the minute. Fun to see the rainbow of races coming here for a meal. THE FOOD While the meats were indeed good and service fairly quick, one item was just a little too salty for me and took my experience down a notch or two. OXTAILS w/dressing & fried corn | $16.85 The oxtails (4 stars) were fantastic and very meaty! The fried corn (3 stars) was decent, but the dressing was way too salty (2 stars). I'm going to assume it's not like that regularly, because I don't think very many people would find that appealing. SIDE NOTE - I should mention I watched them add a broth to the dressing while waiting in line. Maybe this contributed to the saltiness or MAYBE they knew it was too salty and tried to tone it down. NECKBONES w/au gratin potatoes & yams | $10 The neckbones (3.5 stars) weren't as good as the oxtails, but still acceptable. They actually could have used a little more salt/seasoning, but were delightfully meaty. The au gratin potatoes were average, however the yams were 5-star candy sweet (the way I like them). BAKED CHICKEN w/macaroni n' cheese and greens | $10 The chicken (4 stars) was delicious and well seasoned. The mac n' cheese (3 stars) wasn't my favorite, but acceptable. The greens were above average by restaurant standards (3.5 stars). We also received two cornbread muffins (2 stars) per order, but didn't eat any of them. I prefer my cornbread sweet and moist. These were the non-sweet muffins and a tad bit dry. FINAL THOUGHT I'm perplexed as to what an accurate rating of my experience should be. On the one hand there were a few items I really, really enjoyed. On the other, several items were just okay. Then there is the dressing, which I disliked on this visit but possibly could have loved if it were less salty. Overall I would give them 3 stars for a first time visit. I hope to try them again someday since they have been a local institution for over 50 years. 2017/143

When you hear someone say "This meal was made with love", then I think they had Eagles in mind.

I just completed my third cross-country drive when I'm always searching for the best food in each city & state that I pass through. And by far, my favorite meal on the 11-day trip that I just completed was the lunch that I enjoyed at Eagles! I don't think I realized how incredible all soul food should taste until I broke a few speed limits driving that day from Charlotte, NC because I saw that Eagles was serving oxtails! And now I know the standard by which all collard greens should taste. And where has "fried corn" been my whole life!!! As I sat there enjoying the ambience (Divorce Court on the TV, while regulars passed in and out), I could not help notice how the whole staff just worked like they didn't have a care in the world...they laughed...they interacted with the customers (regulars and strangers alike). During the end of my meal, the staff came around and handed free t-shirts to the customers sitting there. I enthusiastically took off my sweater and put on my new t-shirt. (I had also considered using the plastic bag they gave us and using it as a hair net like the staff was all wearing, but then I worried they might misconstrue my humor as being offensive. I just wanted to show that I was so giddy with food delight that I was willing to get behind the counter and help serve other customers for the rest of the lunch shift. My only regret was not being hungry enough to also order a second lunch of the Baked Pork Chops; I seem to notice more regulars ordering the Baked Pork Chops than the Oxtails. If I somehow had to stay in Birmingham for a week, I would stop in everyday for lunch at Eagles for their rotating menu. On my eastward road trip, I'm coming back!!!

It's kind of hard to tell what all the food options are, so I had to ask what some stuff was. I managed to get a meat and 2 instead of a meat and 5! There were quite a few veggie options that looked amazingly delicious! I do not recommend coming here hungry or hangry. Ok, sooo I love meat loaf so naturally that's what I got. I also got collards and cornbread dressing & yes they had cranberry sauce. Everything was good tasting. The meatloaf was a little sweet to my taste so I probably wouldn't order it again. The veggies were not over seasoned or overcooked. I will definitely comeback here bc there is still just so much I wanna try. The staff is nice and took care of the crowd. I even witnessed them give a person in need food, as they were about to dig in the restaurant's garbage can outside for scraps. Made me count my blessings.. all of them! There is street parking only. I didn't have any issues parking on a Sunday afternoon. The inside of this restaurant is not big but I was comfortable dining in.

A la cart is available as well. They have ice tea or lemonade drinks in a cup that they also serve you. Lemonade was good. There's a very small counter to pay after you order. Fry chicken is tasty with perfect crisp. Collard greens were seasoned well and perfect texture. Yams (my favorite) was perfect - flavorful, not too sweet and firm but not hard. Both of us thought the Black eyed peas looked really good but taste bland. I would have preferred it without the Okra. I didn't see that when I ordered. One in our group commented the meat loaf was good. The dressing was really good too - well seasoned and tasty. After paying there's a dining area for self seating. It serves the purpose to sit and eat but definitely could use sprucing up along with the restrooms. Please seriously consider! It would make the experience much more pleasant to enjoy their delicious food. I took off two stars for that reason and yes it's that unpleasant as the tables/chairs are also too clustered together. The chairs don't fit around the table properly. Overall good southern food at a reasonable price and recommended. Skip dining in if you don't have too. Just my two cents.

Parking is primarily street parking in the area, but there is also a public parking deck nearby. I'm unsure what the current cost is for the deck, but it's worth knowing if you're visiting during a busier time. I ordered the fish tacos with black beans and chose the cheese grits as my second side. Everything tasted fresh and had lots of flavor. The real star of the meal, though, was the sweet potato cake. It was incredibly moist and delicious. Honestly, I could've eaten four of them without shame or hesitation. My colleagues ordered burgers and fries. They both really enjoyed their burgers, but neither cared much for the fries. They had also requested a couple additional items after the food arrived, but those items never made it to the table. The decor is bright and fun, though it didn't quite seem to match the style of food being served. Just my personal observation. They also have a robot that helps deliver the food alongside the servers, which felt a little unexpected for the casual atmosphere and southern comfort food vibe. They were fairly busy since it was lunchtime on a Friday, but the wait really wasn't bad at all. Would I go back? Yes. Was it my absolute favorite? No. But there were definitely things I enjoyed, especially that sweet potato cake that nearly made me consider ordering dessert first next time.

The hot chicken sandwich itself wasn't overwhelmingly spicy, but it was finger-licking good -- juicy, well-seasoned, and satisfying down to the last crumb. We truly enjoyed every bite. The ambience with its bright green, purple and white colors added to the experience. The restaurant was lively and full of people, which is always a good sign.
