There aren't too many eateries in Volcano, HI. We got two custom deli sandwiches and the laulau plate. The laulau plate wasn't very good - the best laulau I've had was at Kaaloa's Super J's! The service alone deserves five stars. Awesome and friendly staff were so kind and courteous to our family. They were understanding of our loud and rambunctious children and blessed us with snacks for our kids after our "cake for lunch" purchase. The food was ono. We ordered three sandwiches and all were made with fresh ingredients. Splurged on a bread bowl with chili: bread was delicious on its own and the chili made with hot dogs were perfect. We stopped here after a trip to the Volcano National Park and before heading into Hilo. It is located just minutes away from the park and is the perfect lunchtime stop! They have cute little picnic tables outside so that you can enjoy your lunch in the nice weather. Now trust me, don't judge a book by it's cover. It doesn't look like much when you walk in the door. In fact, it is VERY small and it is hard to gauge what you'll be getting but trust me and trust Yelp on this one! :) We ordered a fully loaded turkey sandwich and it was HUGE. We saw one go by and decided to split it, along with their homemade Portuguese Bean Soup and of course, Mac Salad. I can't get enough of the Mac Salad when i'm in Hawaii! Our lunch was absolutely incredible, inexpensive, and quick. We'll definitely be stopping here again on our next trip from Kona to Hilo! read more

This was the only place open near Volcano National Park so we went to grab some food before we hit the road back to Kona. The food was passable but the apparent owner of the place threw a full-fledged Karen tantrum just because we were waiting for our food in our car on the side of the driveway. It was raining and we were taking the food to go so we sat in the car right near the door (there's no room inside). Despite there being only a couple people there and the driveway being at least six car-widths wide, this woman started literally screaming at us for waiting there. When we moved, she started screaming that we couldn't park in the empty space we pulled into because that was for workers. She actually got out her phone and said she was calling the police and that we'd never be allowed to come there again (like we'd want to). Absolute polar opposite of Hawaiian welcoming and kindness. Regardless of the food is urge everyone to avoid this place solely because they were so incredibly, aggressively antagonistic to their own customers. read more

We called in lunch to go so we could eat it in the nearby Hawaii Volcanoes National Park today. I got the shoyu chicken plate with rice and macaroni salad. My husband got the huge turkey sandwich on oatmeal white with provolone cheese and a side order of Doritos. I told them we get a 10% discount as members of the Volcano Community Association and they said OK. The order was ready when we got there in about 15-20 minutes. The food was great, chicken was nice and tender, 2 thighs in a wonderful sweet/salty shoyu sauce. I was so full I took half of it home to finish later. My husband got full also but kept eating the sandwich because it was so fresh and delicious. We saved the chips for later. They have 2 special plate lunches every day. The shoyu chicken comes with a choice of salads; macaroni, potato or 3-bean. I wish there was another choice like a coleslaw or green salad. Price was about $23 for the 2 of us. All over rice. I loved this combo! It was very satisfying. My friend got a fruit pastry that was absolutely delicious! Pricing is not as cheap as one would expect, but it's not exorbitant either. Just outside area with a few picnic tables. Not much ambience as you look at the utility side of the building. YUM FACTOR Their sandwiches make me want to cry with delight. They are so big it's hard to hold in one hand. They are fit in a quarterbacks hand sized big. The ingredients fresh, crisp, well made and layered. The bread was home made, fresh baked sunflower seed. I could have eaten a whole loaf. Flavors just popped. I tried four sandwiches during my visit and found not a one of them to be sub par. Coffee? Fuggedaboutit. LIke water with brown color for effect. SERVICE AND FRIENDLINESS Fast, but not overly friendly because the place is very small and does not have cat swinging room. You see the dessert case upon entering, read quickly and make up your mind. If you get the hawai'ian gal who is still mad that visitors mess up her island, then you gotta pay your respects to her home turf and be extra nice when you get your sandwich. Overall: A nice LITTLE stop for breakfast or lunch We stumbled across Café Ohia whilst visiting the Volcano National Park. Their parking is ample with a decent number of tables and chairs. However, the space inside the "café" itself is not ample - it's cramped. On walking into the "café" you'll find that if there are more than three people in there, it becomes very difficult for them to move around. You order what you want, and they'll bring it out to you. There's no indoor seating, everything is outdoors, but is covered. They only sell self serve coffee ($1.75/cup). Café Ohia offers daily specials during the week, served with your choice of salad. Examples include spaghetti with garlic bread, mushroom baked chicken with rice, chicken pot pie with bread, meat loaf with mashed potatoes, roast pork with mashed potatoes, lasagna with garlic bread, Hawaiian style chopped steak with rice, chicken Hekka, sweet and sour spare ribs with rice, chicken tofu with rice = all plates at $6.50 and half orders are $5.00. They also do breakfast, which ranges from $3.50-6.00. Their baked goods include cornbread ($1.75), cinnamon rolls ($2.50), croissants ($1.75) bagels with cream cheese ($2.00) chocolate/almond torte ($2.50) and bread pudding ($2.50). They also do quiches, soups, salads, drinks and made to order sandwiches ($6.95). We had two cups of coffee, a piece of cranberry bread pudding, a humungous cinnamon roll and a piece of pineapple & macademia nut cake = around $11. Everything was quite nice, but nothing special.
