Stumbled upon EagleMonk while in-town for a conference. We needed a place to eat dinner and I found this place on Yelp. The reviews looked promising. I was not sure what to expect but when we pulled up I did not know if we got to the right place. Single story cement block kind of structure. Divey/hole-in-the wall kind of feel? But once we step inside we felt welcomed. You will notice the mugs on the ceiling and the quaint/clean environment. Nothing fancy with the banquet style chairs and tables. Staff was very friendly. One staff member came over and explained how the place works and what they offer. Homemade dough and sauces, no fried foods, and no liquor. Unfortunately, we were looking for some good fried bar food, so we decided to pass on dinner but did get drinks. Place your order at the bar. There was a ton of beer options but I went with a hard cider. I went with the cherry cider and it was tart but refreshing - not overly sweet. I did notice a side room but did not explore to it. If you're solo, given the small space, this means ordering beer and food before securing a seat. There are enough employees - why not take orders at the tables? Ambiance is divey but not in a good way. They could do a lot to improve this place. Being more friendly and less businesslike might be a start. My friend and I went on a quick trip to visit breweries in Grand Rapids and stopped at EagleMonk on the way home. Honestly, their beer was the best of the entire trip! We were the first people there of the day and sat quickly at the bar. The bartender was super friendly and helpful to choose one of many beers on their list. We both each got a flight, and the first beer I tried was my favorite of the whole trip! It was the Instigator, and even though the description said winter, I thought it was still not too heavy. Both of us enjoyed our flights while we hung out chatting with the staff and other patrons who stopped in. Everyone was extremely friendly, and the bartender was helpful to give us information about other breweries in the area and talked with us about other Michigan breweries. He also gave us a few additional samples for free while we waited for him to fill our growlers. The space is a decently sized inside and their outdoor patio is dog friendly and awesome. I was sad that we were just passing through because I would have loved to stay, drink more beer, and eat some of their pizza because it looked and smelled delicious! read more

We are from out of town and here for a tournament and needed a place that would hold about 20 people. They said they had a back room so we went. When we pulled up my heart sank a little. The place is not at all what we expected. I felt like it was moldy smelling when we walked in but someone we were with said it was probably the smell of the beer making process so i can't confirm or deny that information. Most of the teens did not love their pizza but the adults thought it was fine. The paninis were decent and the spinach artichoke dip was good. If we ever came back to this area i would basically just come for their house made beers and ciders. They were excellent. The mixed berry cider was not sweet at all and I really enjoyed it. Their homemade soda was great too. My kids mixed the cream soda and orange to make a creamsicle. That was delicious. Service was good and they checked up on us even though you order from a counter so that was nice. read more

We were traveling through Michigan, and decided to stay in Lansing. I read the reviews on this place, and planned our hotel to be nearby. I was not sorry! What a great brewery. The staff was very welcoming, and they were very informed about all the beers. And the ones we tried were fantastic. We also had a salad and a pizza, and they were both great. Ordered two pizzas. Italian and BBQ chicken. Both decent pizzas but I feel it's hard to mess up Pizza. I would have gave it 3-stars but it's a brewery and the beers were that weak. Since we were visiting Lansing, Lee and I of course had to go visit one of the local breweries. This one seemed to get the best hits on Yelp, so off we went. Our friends remarked that they had no idea this place existed. It's on a relatively quiet part of Mount Hope. One of my favorite things is the decor on the ceiling -- hand-thrown mugs by a local potter. They make a striking and interesting display. The beer is pretty good, and $9 for 9 samplers (which is a big chunk of their menu) is a pretty great deal. Their IPA is pretty forgettable, but their dopplebock was awesome, enough so that I ordered a full pint of it. The pizza is really good, too. It's made in house, and has a nice thin crust and tasty toppings. The staff is really friendly and happy to talk about the beer. So if you're in town, give this place a shot, it definitely is worth a visit! read more

Looked up this place, reviews were good, the place looked simple and was a 4 min drive from the hotel. 1st trip in and I'm a lifetime member. Got a mug with my name on it hanging from the ceiling. Flatbread pizza brought me, the beer sold me. If you don't become a lifetime member I'm not sure understand how life works. Drop what you're doing and go see the guys at Eagle Monk now. First off, this place is a little off the beaten path and unless you are paying attention it is easy to drive right by it, although it is painted MSU green. That said, make a point to get to this place if you are in the area. Multiple beers on tap that they brew themselves and all we tried were fantastic. They also have a somewhat limited menu of homemade pizzas and other bar type food and both kinds of pizzas we had were fantastic. It draws both a young college crowd and older adults looking for a great beer and some wonderful food to enjoy while drinking it. We will definitely be back and would highly recommend this place for anyone. read more

I didn't order food so I'm judging purely on beer and atmosphere. I heard they have great food so maybe I'll come back and try that. I dislike the "pub style" ordering, hence going up to the bar and ordering instead of being waited on. That's annoying and brings on a weird casual fast food kind of atmosphere. My party of 3 each ordered a beer sampler. I liked some, disliked others as would be expected. All the beer is served at almost room temperature which would be acceptable had we been in Germany at Octoberfest but we aren't, we are in Michigan in august, and I want cold beer on a 90 degree day so that was a big negative. The atmosphere was lame in that it made the DD of our party want to go to sleep. Weird music playing and a musty smell in the room. Blah. I might give this place another try since it had such good reviews but maybe I'll have a couple cold ones before my room temp ones. read more

Be very sceptical of the reviews that say the beer isn't very good or so so. They are pedestrians and simply, opinions aside, shouldn't be rating beer. They are doing no one a favor. While passing through Lansing, my wife and I wanted to visit one of the new breweries that have sprung up there in the 15 years since we left. After investigating a few online, Eagle Monk was the pick, partly because of its humble, off the beaten path setting. It seems the best breweries often begin in the unlikeliest spaces. Eagle Monk occupies a compact, low-slung brick box on Lansing's industrial fringe. Inside you've got plain walls that could use a coat of paint, a concrete floor covered by fading green paint, vinyl upholstered chairs (a few torn and duct-taped) and laminated tables such as you might find in a cheap diner. I find that sort of thing appealing--others may not, but remember, this is a brewery. If you came for the atmosphere (as opposed to the beer), you're missing the point. (or...the pint?) We started with a sample flight--8 beers for 9 bucks, which is a great deal as these things go. And of course it lets you sample most of the tap roster. Out of those 8, we liked the pilsner, Marcy stout, ESB, Red Eye rye, and Winter Warmer best. If I returned, it would probably be for a pint of that last--full bodied and mellow, but with whiskey notes and a pronounced oakiness from bourbon barrel aging. When I first lifted the glass and caught the aroma, I had to check to make sure I had a beer in my hand and not a glass of bold, tannin-rich red wine. The IPAs, regular and dark, were a bit of a letdown. Surprisingly little hop flavor for the style, and with a quasi-soapy aftertaste. We both got a pint of the ESB to accompany the veggie pizza we ordered for lunch, which itself was pretty tasty. Thin, very crisp crust, tangy housemade sauce, with enough cheese to complement these without overwhelming them. Veggie toppings were a little thin, and I would have paid a couple bucks extra to double them, or some of them. But still a very enjoyable pie. I wouldn't put Eagle Monk in the top rank of Michigan breweries, but they do make some respectable beers, and unless their drinking pleasure requires a chic and trendy setting, beer lovers won't regret a stop there. read more

This place is a great little gem tucked away from everything else. Their pizza is phenomenal, the beer is amazing, and the vibe is pretty chill. They have a small game room, and when it's warm they have outdoor seating and outdoor lawn games. They do live music here, as well as some other things every now and then.
