Came here years ago after reading an article on Serious Eats about the best spots to eat in London. Let me tell you they were not wrong. I got the full English breakfast here and it was a plate piled high with a sinful degree of deliciousness: I almost felt embarrassed at how shamelessly I enjoyed it (while my cousin watched with a mixture of amazement and disgust). All jokes aside, I really enjoyed my time and my meal here. The service was great - even got a free bread pudding from a lovely lady, whom I assume was one of the owners, as I was leaving. This place is very special with its original 50s shopfront and grade II listed interior. It is loud, bustling and you can get a huge plateful of home-cooked food for about 6 pounds. It is places like this that make me love London; a real gem. read more

Really impressed with this family run homestyle restaurant. It is almost insulting when people refer to this place as a greasy spoon. It is a local restaurant with lots of regulars and visitors like us. Best of all, they treat visitors as if they're regulars. As afar as the breakfast menu goes, it can please everyone. From those who want a proper English breakfast to those like me who aren't as interested in breakfast and had cannelloni at 9:30 in the morning. Yes...breakfast and pasta can both be served at 9:30 in the morning. The cream sauce on the cannelloni was wonderful and the full breakfasts were very satisfying. Anthony Bourdain and other travel books were not wrong. Get up early and make the journey on the Central Line one stop east of the City of London to Bethnal Green and enjoy the friendly and caring service. You won't be disappointed. read more

Honestly what a great place. It's a tiny hole in the wall in the outskirts of London, and a very very homey place. It seems that lots of locals frequent the establishment -- that's how you know it's good! It does take CASH ONLY, so make sure you bring money! The day we came, they were quite busy and seemed a bit understaffed, so everyone was a bit harried but friendly nonetheless. Everyone is extremely nice and the food is delicious! I ordered the full English breakfast -- because of course I had to -- and it did not disappoint. You can add-on other things as well. They have a pretty extensive menu and it's very inexpensive (I think my platter was less than £6 or £7). It's not fancy -- it's a very no-frills restaurant, but if you're trying to find an authentic London English breakfast experience, look no further! read more

I was talking with a friend about English food and how rare it is these days to find any in London and I mentioned the place I last remember eating a truly delicious steak and kidney pudding, a quintessential English "delicacy", was not in some legendary establishment like Rules in Covent Garden or Simpson's on the Strand but an Italian greasy spoon in the East End, and this wonderful gem of a restaurant popped into my mind, and even though I didn't eat here alas for close to 30 years I feel impelled to offer this comment. Probably the best café/"greasy spoon" in London. Certainly the best English breakfast I've had! Their specials (like the chicken and bacon pie with broccoli and roast potato) are just as amazing. Completely family-run, and you can tell in the atmosphere. Incredibly efficient, too. You won't wait long for food, but expect to queue for a table during the brunch rush (esp. Saturday mornings). Worth every second of waiting. I come here as many times as I can! It's also a great way of chatting and getting to know people, as you'll never know who you'll end up sitting next to. Walking into this tiny establishment, I was instantly greeted by a woman barking orders toward the kitchen, an old man at the door kissing goodbye whom I could only assume were regulars, an array of people crammed shoulder to shoulder piling pies into their mouths, and some of the best smelling food I had been privy to since moving to London. Before I even sat down, I was already in love. Sure, I soon found out all the tidbits about history and tradition and original lasagna recipes and yada yada yada, but I was already so deeply immersed in the menu of proper British fry ups and classic Italian favourites that I didn't even blink at their mention. I just ordered, crammed in shoulder to shoulder with the other patrons, and shoveled pie into my mouth. And wouldn't you know it, I got a kiss on the way out! read more

This has to be hands down the most heart warming, belly rumbling food in London. The ever changing menu is an array of Italian home cooked feasts that come out piping hot. Now don't expect glamour from this, or someone smartly dressed leading you to your table. He'll have a white apron on but it will have traces of the days special wiped all over it. This place has a honest charm about it and when Leon C took me hear I knew that we would be buddies. It's right up my ally! You'll find the local contractors chow down with the hipsters, sharing a bottle of "red sauce". This place is way off the beaten path. It's located in west London in what appears to be a quiet and cultured neighborhood. I took the 8 to get there (from Wormwood) and got there shortly after 9am. For me, it was a little hard to find because they had the roof down (light drizzle) and a farm vendor was setup right in front (the bus stop is RIGHT across the street). Once i found it, I walked in to find only locals...I figured this since they all turned to look at the Yank that appeared without a jacket on and full backpack (plus, I had the "American" accent). I decided to "stop" at a table outside and proceeded to order the Full English and tea with milk. It was classic, grilled stem mushrooms, grilled tomato halves, sausage, bacon (which isn't cooked to a crisp like us American's like) and a thick slice of toast with an egg over easy. You will walk away full and content, it will keep you going for hours as you walk around the British Museum (which is what I did...). Simple meal with simple flavors, add pepper if desired. For 10 quid, you can't go wrong. You get to experience the 'burbs of West London and chat it up with the locals (I met 3 locals in a boxing club, to which they invited me!). As a foreigner looking for a full English breakfast, I was a little worried that this small eatery with clearly devoted patrons might give four Americans a bit of a hard time when we showed up late on a Wendesday morning. We were in desperate need to a high caloric meal and stiff tea to deal with our lingering jet lag and were willing to suffer any gruff Englishman to get it. We were surprised. First, the staff was amazing. Truly some of the friendliest people we met on our trip. Second, the food. I've had my share of full fry breakfasts, and so I was really looking forward to the meal, but I wasn't expecting so many options. Each of us loved our meal, and had we been staying closer we would have probably come back. Third, the price. Even with the conversion rate this meal was a deal. And the waiter even brought out a plate of chips so we could try them since his mum hand cuts them. ::SWOON:: I wasn't sure if I should Yelp this place because it instantly made my "Great Secret Places" list, and I never want it to change. I wasn't leaving London without a proper English breakfast. As the waiter/cook/son of one of the chefs told us, this place blew up in popularity after Anthony Bourdain mentioned it in his London episode of The Layover (S1E9). However, when Bourdain sits down to eat eggs on fried toast, it's actually at a different place, which is a bit misleading. I can see why though - E Pellicci is a bit on the small side, but not without charm. It's been around since 1900 and it has a hand-carved wood interior. Luckily for us, there's also outdoor seating (about 5 tables). We went with the modestly priced full English breakfast (which included white sausage, bacon, mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, and a fried egg on fried toast) with the addition of black pudding. With a cup of tea, it totaled just 7 GBP. A fine deal. The sausage and the mushrooms were the best parts, but be warned - you definitely need to come hungry because it's a hefty meal. Not for the faint of stomach. The employee who I mentioned earlier (Liv) also struck up a conversation with us about America and NYC, and would not let us leave without a generous sample of his mom's bread pudding. If I had an Italian grandmother this is exactly what I would expect her to make. Just as some of the other review say this is a total hole in the wall, no frills establishment that been in the hood for ages. The other diners were very accommodating with a little game of musical chairs so that all the groups were taken care of. The food was homey, hearty and authentic. The best thing that we got was the lasagna, so freaking good. And I don't know if they just liked us or if everyone gets garlic bread but that was a nice touch too. There's just something about the restaurant where you can feel the warmth of being in someone's home versus being in an Olive Garden, god forbid. The fun for us really started after the meal. I quietly went to the counter to pay while K and J were gabbing about whatever they were talking about. So I pay our tab 22 pound for the 3 of us, great deal. And after hearing the American accent, Nevio (current owner) asked me if it was my first time in East London, much to his surprise I told him it was my first time to London period which really got his attention. I think he was little confused as to how an American would come across his East London establishment. (Thanks Yelp!) So we chatted a little and what would you know, he said you have to take some of my Mom's bread pudding with you, she just made it this morning and you can share it with the girls, so of course I took him up on his offer. K was a little disappointed as she's been there several times and has never been given mom's bread pudding. See it pays to make some friendly conversation. So then he came over to flirt with the girls, telling K that maybe if she flirted a little more or smiled that she would have been given some bread pudding on her previous trips to E Pellicci. Then to top it all off we got some photos with Nevio and he was pretty stoked to show us his auto-graphic book with the celebs that have been though Pellicci. We recognized a lot of them, but we weren't familiar with some of the Brits, of course our highlight was that Ross from Friends had been in there. Talk about a fun experience all around. read more

E Pellicci is one of the best cafe/restaurants I have ever had the pleasure of eating in. It has been an Italian family run business for over one hundred years and is rightly becoming a living legend. The seating is cramped and you can expect to share your table with others. This though is not a negative. It is something to be relished from our past when we weren't so removed from social community living. The breakfasts are stunning and all the food both Italian and English are very well made. When you arrive the welcome by Nevio Junior the grandson of the founder of E Pellicci is so warm and genuine you feel like family. The banter is high and everyone seems to join in. It is so jovial you may not want to leave. The place is so famous, don't be surprised if you find yourself rubbing shoulders with A-list celebrities when you are ordering your Shepherds Pie. read more

This bustling East London joint is legendary as a traditional English caff. Old fashioned wood tables feel almost Bavarian in style, and you might end up sharing yours with others. You'll probably hear those 'others' ordering plain white toast with butter (or is it margarine?) and English teas, an occurrence still incomprehensible to my Americanness (why order cheap white toast when you're out to breakfast?). E Pellici's is an informal place, a noisy place, and a reliable place for proper English breakfast food. I had beans, eggs and chips, and it was fine, nice even. It's not fabulous and not meant to be. The caff serves English pies, pasta, and other non-breakfasty items for lunch, which I haven't had so can't vouch for; but as the name implies Italian ownership, one might expect these dishes are also fine, not fabulous, and without question satiating. Service was quick and friendly, not gushy, on my visit, as it should never be in a real caff. The menu is extensive with every variation on chips, beans, eggs, back bacon, toast, fried tomatoes and margarine that one can hope for. Prices are reasonable; really, there's no gourmet goose fat fried chips and no pretention. Overall, I would go back: it's marked as my hotspot for baptising non-British visitors into the fine world of English breakfasts. read more

What would happen if Italian immigrants came into East London at the turn of the century? They'd open E Pellicci. Which they did. Which is why you should go. It's the most Italian, and yet the most London eating experience you'll ever have. Chicken Rustica with gravy and roast spuds? check. Liver, veg & chips? Yes, that too. Sandwiches? They'll basically make you a sandwich out of anything they have. All good. Reasonably priced (you'll get a massive meal with a drink - like fresh squeezed orange juice for under a tenner. Tea is 60p. And it's good. Then there's the decor. It's lovely. Art nouveau. Original. Preserved. Probably 'cos they never had the cash to transform it in the 50s and 60s when wood grain and coloured glass became passé. And that's good, too. There's no glamour. Just incredibly nice people who will treat you like a regular the first time you come in - one of the workers finishing off her shift went round and said goodbye (mostly by name) to every single person in the place. It's teeny, tiny, and absolutely worth a visit. One of London's great eateries, reasonably priced, and full of lovely, filling, warm, friendly food and conversation. read more

And even better, when I asked the proprietor how many meats I could get as of the breakfast, he said "as many you'd like." That's the right answer! A good cup of coffee, fried egg, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, black pudding, grilled tomato, fried bread with a healthy dose of friendly banter with the regulars. If you are front the states, think of this as a Cheers Style diner. We walked in upon a few recommendations from the locals. Turns out the Pelllicci family has owned and operated this restaurant for 100+ years. At 3:00 PM, this place is PACKED. And I mean filled to the brim, yet somehow the staff there still made us feel welcome and at home. We were seated with random strangers which was uncomfortable. Since we were in England, we ordered the English Breakfast. Food wise, it was a classic "diner" feel. But the service, oh man are those guys awesome. This is exactly what 100 years of pride and joy amount to...amazing service. Each of the staff stopped over to see how we were doing and chatted with us for a few minutes while we were away. I immediately felt like they were my new friends. We were even given complimentary bread pudding made by their mom to go. I never felt more at home and more welcome in a cafe before. What a great treat! We are so bummed out that we went here on our last day! Definitely a go more than one time restaurant. This morning we had the Full English with one order of hand cut chips, tea with milk. DELICIOUS! The owners were so nice! We stayed and had an extra coffee. While we were enjoying our coffee the homemade bread pudding came out. They gave us a serving! Delicious! Unlike American bread pudding this one is crispy and only slightly sweet. Wow! Pretty amazing. Turns out I'm a sucker for the old times. And this is so old and so classic. Just the most perfect cafe interior, all chrome and pleasantly varnished wood. Real coffee, really good food. It's amazing that they can actually fit all these people in, it's pretty dinky! But just the best remedy on a weekend for a big night, the night before. Another classic east end place -- the interior is actually been written up so many times and is condsidered a landmark . Beautiful wood insets and walls the place is hot and really gets full -- with its tiny little reception and cooking area you often find yourself eating at a shared table. Adorable outside with its flower boxes and little house above -- rumour has it the Kray brothers rented this floor at some point in their scary career. I have lived on the same street as E.Pellicci for god knows for how long and nor realizing what a little gem I have next door. For me the place always just looked like..old and brown? Tiny windows, tiny cafe. But once again I learned that I should not judge anything by its looks. Inside the cafe/restaurant is very loud, and friendly. Always busy. I love the atmosphere in here, and you can get a plate of food that fills you up and clogs your arteries for under a fiver! The pasta dishes are really good too. The spinach and ricotta cannelloni is especially good. What I love about Pellici is that it has a great vibe in there and is fabulous for people watching. You will find yourself squashed in with every Eastend stereotype imaginable. Expect to be called Duchess and do prepared to be squashed. It is cramped and if you go at a peak time you will find yourself squished a bit, but this is part of the charm here. One of the top 3 breakfasts in the world!: would put it #2 on my list, behind Bryant's in Memphis, Tennessee and just ahead of The Omelet House in Las Vegas. Way better than average "full" breakfast. Why? Mainly because they know how to cook tomatoes. I know it sounds silly, but they get so much flavor out of them than anywhere else. Black pudding also better-than-average. Also, I really like places that like to say "Yes." This place will basically say yes to any order if they've got the ingredients. Why aren't more places like this? While the breakfast tea is, again, way better-than-average, they also know how to make a proper espresso. No visit to London is complete without a visit here. read more

Opened since 1900 this is a place to go for breakfast and lunch if you like popular atmosphere plenty of stories. The staff is a whole Italian family who is welcoming at anytime. Behind the counter , you can see the preparation of your toast or sandwich with delicious fresh components :vegetables, cheeses, butter and a tender ciabatta. You can also smell a waking-up flavour of coffee in the morning and during lunch. It's a really small place and generaly you have to share your table with others and at peak time you need to be prepared to wait 10 or 15 minutes. You can hear the Mother from the kitchen , people will treat you very kindly and if you'll meet Nevio , one of the waiters , be prepared to laugh as he is the type of person you like to have around you. Their breakfast is famous as you can mix from a basic english breakfast any other component from an important list. Place looks amazing both inside and outside. Original. Stylish. Its great to gather with friends and hangout, or even to come here with the family and spend some quality time, both will be a great choice. On my visit here I had ordered a breakfast since it was morning, and it was fantastic, astonishing. I've got to say that people should expect something glamorous from this place, but the food is just ... Smells so delicious, not to mention the taste, its magical. Whats best about that is the fact that the prices are hilarious compared to the taste and the quality of the food and service. From the moment you walk into the small cafe and here a mix of East London English and Italian being seamlessly interwoven; you know you are in for something memorable. If you love great affordable food with a warm and charming atmosphere; you must eat here! The food was fantastic. After decades of cooking day in day out one would hope that to be the case. Luckily for us, they have a burning passion here for making delicious food and happy customers that is palpable. You will walk away with a huge grin and a full stomach, guaranteed! Family owned and operated, and what a dynamic and lovely family they are. Anna, one of the daughters, sat me down got me a spot of tea, and helped me to decide on the classic English breakfast. Which is a sausage two slices of ham, a tomato and an egg on top of a piece of fried bread. It was love at first bite. I ate everything and was supremely satisfied. The only sad part was that I had no room left for one final Doner Kebab before catching my flight at Heathrow! This was however a very fitting final meal in London. Not so normally reserved, I sat and took in all the sounds and smells. The conversations between the staff and the regulars. One of those great small moments when you feel like you've wandered into a film and are just a member of the audience. Of course, non-participation isn't an option in a cafe which could seat maybe 25 people with 4 very active and friendly staff. I looked on while Anna shouted orders in italian between kitchen and staff; then chatted with her customers in her lovely East London accent. Nev, the son came out from the kitchen to have a bit of fun and chat with the customers that had come in. One such table were a group of Medi-Helicopter crew wearing bright orange emergency gear. Two local brits and two observers one Kiwi and one from Texas. Brit:"I want you to meet my boys here they're from, New zealand and this one He's from Dallas. Have you ever been to Dallas?" Nev:"No, Thank God!" (everyone laughs) "But I did very much enjoy watching it on the Tele growing up!" Ah, british humor... Anna:"So you are here as observers, are you?" They nod. Well, let me tell you how it works. You've just finished up your breakfasts and so any second now; just as it's time for the bill to come there'll be an emergency call coming in and you'll all have to leave unexpectedly!" (laughs around) Her tone went from joking to sincere, "Seriously though, Thank you for what you all are doing. It's a great service that you do for everyone!".... Seated at Another table were two female students from China. Nev greeted them with his best "Nin hao!" and then proceeded to ask them if they'd like to meet his Mum. Mom of course works in the kitchen and was more than happy to stop what she was doing and say hello to the girls. After that he began to try to convey some of the areas gangster history through broken English and hand gestures. One theme of the morning chatter was that of the Kray brothers whom are portrayed in the new movie "Legend" by Tom Hardy. According to Nev they used to come here for breakfast very regularly; and I can see why. Anna, greeted each and every customer as they arrived and as they left. Thanking them for their patronage, and encouraging them to return with a genuine love and appreciation. Something that was not as common as I had expected in other places I came to in London. Recognizing that I was a tourist; she offered me some free chips on the side which were fantastic. Who is going to say no to free chips??? We had a lovely chat about the U.S. and her last holiday to Florida with the family. As I was readying to leave, paying the bill and such(which was a ridiculously cheap 6 pound and change) She insisted on giving me a slice of freshly baked bread pudding straight out of the oven by Momma herself. I declared that I was stuffed and would pop if I took it, but she insisted and I ate it later before getting on my plane. What a dear. This place is a gem, not to be missed while you're in London!
