We met with a few contractors, and after now having gone through the entire process, we are SO happy we worked with Jose and his team. Jose Amaya was a wonderful contractor to work with. He called to respond to my request for a quote within 20 minutes and came out that same day to look at our kitchen and take measurements. He gave me a quote within a week. His team was able to start the project a few weeks later, and finished when promised! Jose and his team were professional, courteous, and did a beautiful job with our partial kitchen renovation. Jose clearly and knowledgeably communicated with us regarding issues as they arose (surprise gas pipe in the wall we were having taken down!) and was completely accommodating when we went back and forth on decisions. I would recommend Jose Amaya Remodeling to anyone, and I will definitely work with the company again for upcoming projects!

I called Rent-a-Pro to do a new door install in an existing finished doorway. Unlike other handyman…read morecompanies, they didn't come out for an estimate, so I was a little bit skeptical about their ability to provide an accurate quote. I was also concerned that the first few hours of the day would be consumed with assessing the work and purchasing materials, so I'd be paying for time when no work would be happening - and I didn't know how efficient the handyman would be with his time, as he was essentially getting paid by the hour. As soon as the handyman arrived, he assessed the doorway and discussed options with us. He understood exactly what was (and was not) possible and gave us a realistic estimate for how long the work would take. As soon as we decided on the path forward, he set off to Home Depot with my husband to purchase materials. One hour later, he was hard at work and - with the exception of a quick lunch - he worked busily all day. He did excellent work and definitely didn't waste any time. The thing that I appreciated most is that he told us from the start that he wouldn't be able to complete the work in a single day, so he set realistic expectations for us. He actually completed more work than he had originally thought possible on the first day, leaving minimal work remaining for the second day, and he used the extra time to take care of some other tasks around the house. Even at 1.5 days of labor, the overall cost for the doorway + other work was less than all of the other quotes that I had received and the quality was excellent.

I considered at Rent-A-Pro when I was looking to have some work done around the house before…read morehosting my family for Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience with Ted and would not recommend him due to his lack of professionalism. First of all, we had to reschedule my walk through 4 different times. This should have been my first clue to move on with other handymen I researched, but I tried to give Ted a chance. He actually offered to do my walk through free of charge because of the scheduling issues, so I moved forward with it. After the walk through, I was issued an estimate, which was reasonably priced. I decided that I would hire a smaller, independent contractor to some immediate small projects around the house before my family arrived (hang a ceiling fan, mirror, and flood light), and hire Ted and his company to complete larger projects once I had some more money saved (build out a few closets, hang some cabinets, repair a porch roof, and repair some doors). When I thanked him for the estimate and told him of my plans, he went off, and my experience quickly took a nosedive. He rambled on and on about how I wasted his time (even though I explicitly told him I would hire him at a later date for the larger projects) and then he made a biased statement that was offensive and unprofessional about working with customers in Southeast D.C. When I mentioned to him that I thought his comment was racially and social-economically charged and wasn't appreciated, he flipped out. I told him I would share an honest review of my experience, including his racially charged comment, and he threatened legal action against me, which isn't even possible. This was all such an unfortunate experience, but I appreciate him showing me who he was. If you are a person of color, ally, or someone who cares about how the people you hire treat others, I would not bother working with him and his company. If he will speak this way to a customer's face, I can only imagine how he speaks in private. Spend your money where you are celebrated not tolerated!

Just had to write a review for this company. My toilet needed fixing - constantly running or making…read morea consistent whining noise when flushed. Not cool. Reached out to several companies - only DC Handyman called me back. And thank goodness they did! First of, their desk is run by Chastity. Whatever they are paying her, they should pay more. Having dealt with several home repair issues this summer, I've called several specialty repair shops, and none of them have someone as professional and customer centric as Chastity. From that first interaction, she gave me confidence in the company. The estimate was more than I was expecting ($425 for 2 hours of work), but Chastity was able to explain costs and expectations so well that I decided to just have faith. You get what you pay for, right? Next, I met Avishay and his crew. They took a look at my toilet and thought that a replacement of the tank hardware would fix the problem. Except when they tried to remove the parts, it turns out this particular toilet is an all-or-nothing type, as in the tank part that was the problem can't be removed. It was looking like my only option was a full replacement of the toilet. Yikes! I was busy researching how much does a new toilet cost, but Avishay continued to work on the part. He figured out how to open the part and tried a variety of fixes (cleaning, tightening, etc) to get it to work. After about 40 minutes of work - it did! He was able to take my very finicky and specialized toilet and work some magic. I would expect the average repairman would have just said it wasn't worth it, and advised me to just get a new one. But Avishay was determined, and I am very grateful. Chastity followed up with me after the work was done to confirm my satisfaction and confirm final cost. At the end of it all, I was charged $250 for an hour of work, and my toilet is fixed! I am delighted, and I will definitely be keeping this company on file for my next repair job.

I went with DC Handyman because I trusted them when they said despite higher than market prices,…read morethe quality would be assured. Unfortunately, this was not the case. The job was quite simple, replace kitchen flooring with material provided. The team at DC Handyman confidently said they could do this then proceeded to butcher my floor. There were large gaps, ripped sharp edges, curved lines. The workers used no straight edge, no measurements, and no wood filler while destroying all the material. They could tell we were appointed with the job and left anyway saying there was not much they could do. I requested someone else complete the work, they said someone would come out but after follow ups, this never happened. I requested a partial refund then sadly they stopped responding. I gave them plenty of time to reach back out to me, instead they moved on and ignored my messages.
