At this point, we are looking to other companies to fix this mistake. Honestly, we are going to be spending more money to rectify this issue. This is a long overdue review, but Mike installed a temporary pressurized wall in our living room to create an extra bedroom. The wall only took a few hours to install and can be taken down easily with no damage as it does not attach directly to the ceiling or floor. Guests are so surprised as they can't even tell it's a "fake wall". Installation, which was a fair price, included a door, priming and painting the wall, and we paid extra for insulation. Mike was on time, professional, and very flexible with scheduling, as we had to reschedule last minute due to an unexpected ceiling leak from the upstairs unit the day before our installation date. Avoid! I reached out to Mike over 2 months ago for help installing a replacement interior door. He answered promptly, provided a fair estimate, and stopped by later that week to take measurements. And then it all went south. I reached out to him two or three times to schedule a follow-up (for the actual installation once the replacement came), and he confirmed that he'd connected with the wholesalers and would be good to go next week. And then nothing. I reached out to him several times over a 2 week period... but nothing. I continued checking in, and finally received a response that he'd be on vacation and could do it in a week or so. I continued reaching out over and over and over and then I gave up. I had Mike come out on New Year's Eve morning to do some work around my house, including installing two vanity lights, a flush mount light and a showerhead. He was on time, professional and just a great guy. He responded promptly to my email, and gave a reasonable quote. This is mixed bag review. I manage several properties in the DC/MD area. After reading the reviews on yelp, I contacted Mike. He was upfront about his pricing and knowledge about the work. I had several jobs for Mike. We started with a relatively basic job so that the work could be evaluated in light of bigger jobs to come. I found Mike to be very slow about responding to requests and communication, which is a huge pet peeve of mine. When I mentioned it to Mike, his response was that he is busy on multiple jobs and doesn't always have time to respond. I decided to proceed with the job so I could see what the work was like. The job involved step repair and threshold replacement. His crew came and was very professional and did excellent work. Because of the good job that was done, I proceed with a second job request. The second job never really got off the ground. Communication response time from Mike was painfully slow. He did do a site visit where he went to the second property to evaluate what needed to be done. After the visit, he was supposed to contact me with an estimate. I didn't hear from him. Two days later, my tenants contacted me and said "Hey the contactor said he was coming back today but he's not here. What's up?" Mike hadn't told me planned on going back that day, so i was caught off-guard. When I contacted him, he said he was still looking for materials for the job. Since it was a weekend (Sunday) I asked him to contact me the next day so we could get back on track. He never called. I waited 5 additional days before finally deciding to go with a more responsive contractor. Mike still never responded. As a result, I would grade him a 1.5. The work on the one simple job by his crew was great. But because communication and responsiveness is so important to me, I can't recommend him highly at this point. If you are good with no communication, give him try. But if customer service, customer experience, and timeliness (especially for an urgent job) is important to you, probably not your guy. read more

I used Mike Holmes for about 6 jobs over 2 years. I liked that he allowed me to use my charge card, so I continued to use him even though I was irritated a few times with his shoddy work. The 2nd to last job, I asked him to cut a gas pipe so new cabinets could be installed. He came right away, which was commendable. But, he left a 8" x 12" hole in the wall. For a city dweller, that means mice can enter my home. I asked him to fix the hole and do a drywall patch. He refused as he walked out of my house. I had to hire another man to do the drywall patch, thereby delaying the cabinet work after all. Mike then returned to replace an old exit door with a security door and glass door. Mike had given me the door measurements in advance. I had called Mike 2x from Home Depot to confirm the measurements and ask questions before I placed the order. Nonetheless, when the 2 doors arrived, they didn't fit the door area. Mike and his team chose to cut the bricks to fit the door. Mike did not bring a tarp. I had brick dust in my home for WEEKS. I totaled 9 hours of clean up, including washing my cat, my furniture, the walls, the tiles, and anything in sight in the first floor. I was coughing from inhaling the brick dust. (Mike had returned to Home Depot mid way in the job and didn't purchase a tarp to protect my home.) I asked Mike to return to my house, since the 2 door knobs bumped and thus the doors would NOT both lock. I sent him an email stating the next day that I would be home would be a Tuesday. I have one of those security cameras on a door bell. Mike showed up at my house the Monday before the Tuesday and he yelled into my door bell for 3 minutes. I have it on a camera clip. So, I called my neighbors and told them never to hire Mike again. When he returned Tuesday to fix the door knobs, I insisted that a friend be in the house with me when he was present. I also paid another handyman afterwards to fix the door frame and to apply mortar in between the bricks where Mike's crew left holes. read more

I work for a Major Moving Company. We delivered our customer into Washington DC on a Sunday. Unfortunately, while in transit, our customer's 2 drawer filing cabinet became jammed and locked some very important papers that were needed by the end of the day on Monday. With such short notice, we were not able to find one of our moving agencies that would be able to make it out that same day. I went on Yelp and saw that Mike had Five 5 star reviews from what seemed to be reliable reviewers, and I can see why. Mike has provided handyman services for me four times over the past 3 years. Each time I have been extremely pleased with the quality of his work and the reasonable price he charges. The first job that Mike did involved repairing broken pipes in the wall behind our kitchen sink. His work stopped an on ongoing leak that we had for weeks. He then installed a new kitchen cabinet to cover it up. He also reinstalled shower and shower walls. Most recently, he put up walls in our basement in order to create a new bedroom. He has also painted our basement floor and repaired and replaced drywall in our house. Mike is very reliable when it comes to quickly responding to requests for a job and he even recommends additional things that would make the job better. He uses the cash app so it is very easy to make payment even if you are not able to meet him in person. He is a very nice guy and very honorable. Still leaks, 3rd visit he wanted to charge again to come out, but I refused, waited over a week, when he replaced pump again.
