Mr. Dyer knows how a man's suit should fit. I remember the first time I visited his shop some years ago he pointed out where my suit did not fit properly. I can't say enough good things about Dyer's...I have gotten several very different garments altered or repaired here and the skilled personal service, quick turnaround, and friendly "know-how" is something hard to find in any town, big or small. The owner IS the tailor and he is very knowledgeable and intent on making your garment fit and look the best possible. He usually has suggestions for alterations that have been spot on...I know nothing about sewing or fabric construction and my "explanations" are usually limited to "its too big here, needs to be let out there, this drapes funny" but every time, I've gotten thoughtful questions and interaction that get right to the correct solution, including a horrible bridemaid's dress that turned out to be quite cute, hemming of suit pants/suit jacket sleeves, alterations on a ball gown with an Empire waist (looked like a maternity dress) that made it into a perfectly fitted dropped-waist Cinderella dress, and alterations on jeans/pants (waistband taken in, etc). I cannot say enough good things about Mr. Dyer. He was trained at the Fashion Institute in New York City, has been sewing longer than I've been alive, and does excellent work. My friends all think that my clothes were custom-made because they fit me so well. His prices are, I feel, commiserate with his experience. I would rather pay what he charges, and know that I will receive a job well done, than to go to a cheaper tailor and get my clothes butchered. I've seen firsthand instances of this with some of the other tailors in this area. Sometimes, when you try to save money, you end up spending more. So, I'd rather have them done right the first time than to have them re-tailored or have to buy them again. read more

Very sweet spot tucked next to an artesian chocolate store. Many current fashion magazines (guilty pleasure) to flip through while I waited a short time to have some cuffs hand hemmed in the back. The pants were being hemmed for a big deal movie lady and I had to have them ASAP. I was so happy for a $12 price and it took no time at all. This little shop is wonderful. Mr. Dyer is friendly, helpful, and fast. In the last 6 months I've had 3 dresses altered (both taken in and hemmed) - one of which was a bridesmaid dress. I WILL NEVER EVER DO BUSINESS HERE AGAIN!!!! NO NEVER. I just experienced the worst customer service that I think I have ever had in life. I took a formal gown to this business to be hemmed. I paid the $30 dollars for a hem. I ended up wearing different shoes than the ones I originally tried on with the dress. I need to wear the gown again (another family wedding). I will be wearing my Betsy Johnson shoes AGAIN, with the gown. This time I don't want to have to hold it up all night. So long story short I go pick up the dress. The quote for the service was $25.00. I went into the shop, with my money in hand. Prepared to pick up and pay. When low and behold the shop owner Mr. Dyer, tells me that the dress has never been hemmed before. I said sir, I brought the dress to you. I paid the price you quoted for the service you said you did. He loudly disputed my word saying, "ANY WORK DONE HERE IS CHECKED BY ME AND THIS DRESS WAS NEVER HEMMED AT MY SHOP!" By George, the receipt was located and proven that I had indeed PAID for the hemming of said gown. I was very polite and was smiling the entire time, thinking that with the mystery solved, I would be apologized to and asked to forgive him for the unfortunate, but human mistake. Oh NOOOO do you know this man, Mr Dyer proceeds to tell me that it was NOT the same dress. I immediately found myself apologizing stating that it most certainly WAS the same dress. I even went so far as to show him pics of me wearing the gown at the wedding. The date of pic coincided with the date of hemming service and this man appears to get ANGRY at me for stating that I was obviously charged for a hemming service that never happened. End of story he storms off, yelling at me that I was lying about it being the same dress. And that I should just leave his shop. Said $25 (the new charge for what was supposed to havw been a second hem) wasn't going to make him rich. At this point it's NOT ABOUT THE HEM IT'S ABOUT MY INTEGRITY! If anyone knows me, you know that I never ever take the time to complain. I always look for great customer service and I always take the time to write about it to the supervisor or manager. If I'm not satisfied I just don't spend my money there anymore, but this incident just took the cake. I am left with my jaw dropped. I have never experienced such HORRIBLE SERVICE from anywhere. Mr. Dyer may not have your clothes ready on the date given, so be prepared to be flexible about that, but his work is superb. He is a master with men's clothes with an eye for details--he know how they are supposed to fit, and has the tailoring skills to get them right. His fees are reasonable for the quality of the work. read more

If I could give the customer service here less than one star, I would. The gentleman, who I assume is the owner, was very nice, but there's a lady who works there who is unbelievably rude both in person and on the phone. I have never understood why clothing designers think that women's legs are all the same length. Men's pants give you the leg length, but women's don't and it is SO FRUSTRATING. I have to cuff or hem almost every pair of paints I get, which can be such a hassle. So I was so pleased when I recently found Dyer's. I brought in two pairs of pants to get hemmed and he was very thorough about pinning them. He asked me where I wanted them to fall, what kind of shoes I wear, etc. Then he asked me when I wanted to pick them up, took my contact info and a week later I had two pairs of pants that actually fit! They called me when they were done and when I asked to pay with a card he pulled out a special iPhone card reader and texted me my receipt. In all I was satisfied with the experience and completely satisfied with the new hems on my pants. So if you're looking for a tailor in Durham, I'd try here first. read more

I've now visited Dyers on two occasions. The first was to get a pair of suit pants hemmed. The second was to get the sleeves on a suit jacket shortened and the body taken in just a bit. On both occasions Mr. Dyer has done fantastic work. On the most recent occasion there was a bit of a misunderstanding regarding the agreed upon price for the work. Mr. Dyer did a very speedy next-day hem for a new suit I bought at a thrift store. The fit was fantastic, I received many compliments. The thrift store people had told me to go to him, and I'm so glad I did. He has also fixed missing buttons in my apron, tears in a skirt, etc. My only warning is that he works alone and doesn't lunch in, and his lunch hour can be slightly unpredictable. The sign on the door always says when he will be back, though. I'm going this afternoon to have him take in a bridesmaid's dress. read more

Prices are steep - 2 pairs of pants tapered at $24.00, and one pair was too short. Customer service was fine, although there were side conversations with other customers that were on going while I was being helped, which probably contributed to the mistakes made. You can find better tailors for cheaper elsewhere. read more

Super nice people! And, I've only had good experiences with their tailoring work. They shortened some jeans for me that look great, and when I needed a small alteration to a dress and it wasn't ready when they said it would be (because one of their machines went down that day), they did it while I waited (for less than 2 minutes) and did it for free. Ok, so Mr. Dyer is a sweet guy. He's very nice to talk to and is very polite. But DO NOT get your things tailored here if you are on a timeline. Seriously. He does great work, he's just really busy and doesn't have the best organization for making sure things are done on time. It's a small shop and it's always packed. So I think that's a testament to his skill, but it just takes a while to get your stuff back. So be prepared! read more

I had a bridesmaid dress altered here. I went back after they said it was ready and it was now too tight. This was a few days before the wedding and I had driven a half hour to pick it up. He kept saying that it was fine and they'd let it out and it'd be ready in a couple days. He said it was altered an inch too small. I said that an inch is a lot, and he said "no it's not, it happens all the time". He also kept repeating that he got it ready early for me. I told him that early doesn't matter if it doesn't fit, I'd rather they took the time to do it right. Never once did he apologize. I went back a few days later and it was too big again. I had to tape it to myself the day of the wedding because I did not want him to touch it again. Again, no apology. I had my grandmother with me b/c all the family was in town for the wedding and I asked for a discount since the dress still was not correct. The guy at the register literally just stared for about 10 seconds. I repeated it again and they decided to give me $10 off. So I literally paid $35 for a dress that continued to fall down. I also had the straps sewn in so I could wear them for the reception. I was specific about sewing them low so that I could tuck them in. Of course, they sewed them at the top of the dress so that I had to pin them in 4 places to keep them tucked in. Terrible tailoring, and even more terrible customer service. I've been going to Dyer's for nearly 20 years. I found him to be a very knowledgable tailor. He provides a customer friendly enviorment, with attention to detail service and reasonable prices.
