Gumbo Social - Chicken and Sausage gumbo

Prudently, I'd rather traverse from the peninsula on a random Monday for some Gumbo. To say that I was pleasantly surprised was an understatement. The gumbo was seasoned perfectly. I noticed that the chicken is shredded presumably from a pressure cooker, which turns every bite into a mouthful of everything. Despite my best efforts to not be dramatic, one can tell the passion and soul that is put into this bowl of Gumbo. Though I do see some comments, and I agree, that the Gumbo is not thick enough, I don't really care for a heavy/dense gumbo. This bowl has sufficient structure absent the heavy dense roux, and it was exactly to my liking. Though I wish there was a touch more rice, my $6 Caltrain ticket (+tax and muni) was not spent in vain for this heartwarming bowl of gumbo, with a side of passion, defining what real soul food is.

(One star only missing for lack of ambiance.) We tried as many things as we could try! I had the shrimp po boy, my husband had the hot link po boy. We also had the gumbo, red beans and rice, fries, and a hoe cake. Everything was DELICIOUS. We loved it all and would definitely come back. If I could give it another half star, I would. The food couldn't be better!

I ordered a little bit of everything - chocolate, vanilla, blue corn, churro, and strawberry hibiscus. It was a bit of a bummer that my strawberry conchas didn't make it into the box. Not sure what happened - I was chatting with the cashier/concha server so maybe they were distracted. I also should have checked my order. The conchas were SOOOOO good. Very soft and fresh - not too sweet. The chocolate-y flavor wasn't really coming through to me. And the vanilla and churro flavors were very similar. The most prominent was the blue corn - and I think this was my fave. Comparatively speaking to other conchas at a panderia, $5 a concha is a bit steep. They are really tasty tho and definitely worth it. Think of it as a top shelf concha. Oh and the good news is, they're vegetarian friendly - they only use butter. I'll be back next time I'm in the San Fran area.

Bakery had a variety of about 6 concha flavors to choose from. Food: Guava Concha - served warm, great bread texture, nice and airy with a pleasant soft pillowy texture, topped with a crisp sweet cracked cookie top, flavor of the guava is quite subtle with a hint of acidity and a touch of guava note wish flavor was a little stronger, this is a seasonal item if you do want to try Service was great, really warm and friendly with great recommendations and suggestions. Bakery is between two brick apartment buildings, more of a grab and go spot, space is neat and tidy with a cute minimalist design but not much seating in the space Overall enjoyed Florecita Panaderia, definitely one of the best conchas I've had, texture of the bread is really good, on the pricey end but you definitely taste the quality. Worth a try if you enjoy Mexican baked goods.

Other than our group of 7 diners, 5 others were there for an intimate experience. Service: 5 stars all the way! Alex and the bartender were especially friendly, patiently explaining what they were doing and answering all our questions. Food: 3.5 stars. The menu for our night was California Southern. Witty ideas, some interesting combinations and the baby back ribs had lovely smokiness and bite. Most of the dishes were good, but some of them didn't quite come together or needed just a tad more of something special. But overall quite solid. Drinks: 4.5 stars. Loved how they had both alcoholic cocktails and non alcoholic cocktails. Both were excellent! And the cocktail pairings ($39 for alcoholic and $29 for zero proof pairing) were quite good value for money. Charging 15% service fee when we prepaid and then saying that tip wasn't included in our final bill: 2 stars. Sorry this is a big pet peeve of mine; wish they did what all other restaurants where you prepay on Tock do, which is charge a 18-20% service fee upfront and then don't need to ask for anything else if we don't add more. Honestly if we added another 18% tip that would be 33% total seems like a lot to be expected. Overall we had a fun night but the tip situation left a bad taste in our mouth. That said, big kudos to the guys for sharing their food and stories.

I got the smash burger (added a fried egg) with fries and let me say this is one of the best smash burgers I have had in a long time. The flavor has good slices with some added pickled veggies. The ginger was interesting on a burger, but paired greatly. The cheese was melted perfectly the burger was juicy and succulent, and the bun stayed crisp on the skin layer and did not get soggy from the juices. The staff were friendly and held great banter. I will happily come back here for a bite and drinks with friends.

When we arrived from an unassuming front the inside is beautiful - spacious, lovely bar to the right but plenty of tables for dining. The outdoor space is no less gracious - plenty of tables, heaters if you need them and great for parties of two up to maybe six. But what really grabbed me was the staff - every single person I dealt with felt like an old friend and welcomed me like I've been there 1 million times before. I commented that I wish they had a place like this in our neighborhood and the server agreed! Every neighborhood needs one! Food and drink. Whatever you want to drink they probably have it. Beer, wine, spirits, not alcoholic, Coffee, Tea, spritzers - I couldn't decide between the cider and the sake but since it was early in the day I went for the cider. And if you like food this is the place to be. (I'm starting to feel like Stefon from SNL.) this place has everything. Popcorn chicken, waffles, steak, bacon eggs, vegan dishes, the best scallion pancakes ever and a bunch of other things for brunch. I definitely want to go back for dinner to have the noodles and the ribeye. You really can't go wrong at this place. Lovely people, lovely place and if you are not too chef from brunch or dinner, there's a great panaderia a couple of doors down... but really don't bother to save room for a pastry, you will be nice and full from your meal at the rabbit hole.

Farshad, the owner, went above and beyond by including a complimentary herb yogurt dip and even an extra order of rice, which was such a generous and appreciated touch.
