I've never had Iranian food, this is a nice location with modern decor. The entrance is on the side rather than the front corner. It was pretty pricy and smaller portions. If you like sort of a fruity sour flavor you will enjoy this spot. I wish the rice and fish dish wasn't fish mixed with rice but more like a piece of fish. The beef was yummy too, and the server warned us of pits. They don't charge the 20% service charge and suggested tips are based on PRE TAX totals which I really appreciated. read more

Komaaj has turned into our new favorite. Even though we don't live in the neighborhood, we have been here 5-6 times over the past couple of months. The decor is very inviting, the service is fantastic and wine selection is very unique. Mostly Georgian and Armenian wine with a couple natural wine options. The flights are $35 or $45 if I remember correctly and in include 3 glasses. As for food, you have quite a few options for starters and usually around 3 or so main dishes. The main dishes sometimes rotate but the concept and taste are generally consistent across dishes. Some are a bit salty (fish and the beef kebab) so be aware. The only part that I think needs improvement is the desert menu. Ice cream was amazing which they don't serve anymore and baklava is not that great. They have a saffron yogurt which is okay but nothing unique and special and compare to the rest of their menu it's underwhelming. The wine was not good at all - had a funky taste - almost tasted like it's been sitting out in the sun or the taste you get when a bottle has been left open in the fridge for too long. Still many options but I prefer a short menu because they can focus more on quality over quantity. It also makes it easier to pick what to order. The dishes are meant to be shared. I came here to try their sweet and sour chicken stew and it did not disappoint! It was fall off the bone tender with an amazing thick tangy sauce. I haven't had a stew with these flavors before! I had a very disappointing experience with Komaaj's food today. My friend ordered the Pomegranate Chicken Wrap and other items from them for our meal. To my shock, I ended up nearly choking on a whole chicken bone that was hidden inside the wrap (see photo). Completely unacceptable and dangerous. On top of that, the wrap itself was bland and poorly prepared. The chicken tasted like plain boiled chicken -- I couldn't taste any pomegranate paste at all. The wrap was mostly large chunks of lettuce, a whole pickle (not even sliced), no pickled scallions, and zero flavor of sumac. I was even more disappointed when I checked their menu and saw this wrap is $17.50 plus tax -- absolutely not worth it for what I received. I had high expectations, but this was a letdown in both safety and quality. I definitely will not be ordering from Komaaj again. read more

This Resturant had been on my "want to go"list in yelp for over 1 year. Well I finally made it for a "pick up order", and to say the least I was pretty disappointed. I ordered the chickpea and rice dish. There were no walnuts, no pickles and no greens (like the picture), this was more of a chickpea, rice iceberg lettuce dish. And the pita chips were VERY hard. To my surprise, we were told it was served cold and without egg--which is very odd! I asked if it could be prepared hot with egg instead. I was really excited to try this spot during lunch time on a weekday since it had such highly rated reviews. It was fairly empty on a Tuesday around noon so it was easy to order and the food was made promptly. The restaurant has a lot of Iranian decor which was really cool. I tried the chicken bowl and the beef wrap and they were just okay. I wish it was a little bit more flavorful but at least the meat did taste fresh. Tasted like a health food store. The labane was good (tho it's hard to mess up labane) but everything else was really sweet without much other flavor. Tamara is an awesome addition to this family restaurant, knowing how to make patrons feel comfortable and explain each dish. We were recommended and ordered the following: Rash Mazze Platter which has an amazing array of dips, bread and incredible smoked trout Pomegranate and walnut stew with rice (yum!) For dessert: dates and apricots with tahini (so incredibly rich and filling and unexpected, it wasn't overly sweet yet hit the spot for dessert) All flavorful and delicious. Updating my review to give it five stars. Now, I realize that I already gave it five stars but I'm updating it because I've actually eaten there. I went a couple times when they were in the smaller location and now again at their new, larger location on the corner of Mission and 29th (where Good Frickin' Chicken was). I'm so happy this place exist, and can tell you, the food is delicious. It's northern Iranian style food, which is likely a little different from the Persian food you've had before. Most Persian restaurants serve the kebabs and stews that we've all grown to love and appreciate and this place serves the typical fare you would get closer to the Caspian Sea (sardines, trout, salmon, sour chicken, etc). It's about as healthy as you can get without cutting out animal products altogether. What's even cooler is the vibe of the place seems to really nail what it's like in those small, local family restaurants of the north. Friendly staff, well cultivated playlist, persian women fighting over who gets to pay the bill (this is a whole thing in Persian culture. We are not afraid to make a scene if it means we get to be the ones who pay). Great lunch spot currently and it looks like there'll be even more options when the dining room opens. read more
