I live near Evanston so, me and my oldest daughter decided to take the trip on Saturday because we were craving some catfish.

This is the perfect size for making mohinga (Burmese catfish soup). They also have a fish service counter if you need them to cut it into smaller pieces. They have nice big sturdy plastic bags that can fit the whole fish. They have separate service counters for chicken, fish, and beef/pork which is helpful to reduce cross contamination. It's super cold so make sure you bring a down jacket and beanie! The service line sometimes takes a bit of time so just be aware of that. There are plenty of other meat offerings like whole chicken, pork, sausage, beef, etc. All of them look really fresh and very competitive pricing. There's also a grocery store section where you can buy fresh vegetables, spices, and even baked goods like paczkis. The Bavarian cream paczki was delicious and not too sweet. There's also bulk frozen foods like fries and jalapeno poppers (if I remember correctly). Finding a whole catfish in Chicago can be difficult and I'm glad I can always trust Peoria packing for my catfish needs. The whole 2 lb catfish was only $6, incredible deal! The parking lot is decently sized, on a busy day like Christmas or Thanksgiving you can drive further near where the trucks are parked and park along the fence. For special holiday hours they were responsive both through Instagram DM and phone calls to confirm their hours! Really great service. They recently moved to this new location in October 2025. It used to be near Fulton Market in West Loop. Different location but same great service and item selection, probably more spacious too.

And it seems to me that you get a better deals at Peoria, than you do in the grocery stores. Because it's just me, a hundred dollars can go a long way for meat for the month. Maybe even for two months. I think Peoria is good for me because I can buy how much I want and not a whole package. As a matter of fact, I think it's time to make another trip...

Well done to the manager of this store! So the street sign isn't big or flashy, just simple. Sits kinda low compared to others, but easy to find. Next to a super big Burlington. The carts you will find at the front of the store. Once you walk in you are greeted with this array of colors, in the fresh produce area. They offer some very unique items. A cooks dream selection. Many root plants, aloe , fresh flowers. Good prices. Gourmet Cakes are impressive. I think the price is very good! Nice bakery! Every area in this store led to a more impressive area. Really nice Butcher Shop. You will be VERY impressed with this store. So a great place to have in Lawndale. They have fresh Yogurts and cold coolers at the check out counters. Right before you reach the counter. It sets a tone of a more sophisticated style of shopping experience. The front of the check out counters they have premium spirits and medicines. It's locked so you need assistance with that. Well done. Definitely recommend them. Located on the South side of Cermak Road , East of Cicero Avenue. Very busy shopping area.

I try to explore two or three different neighborhoods per week, and today traveled to Little Village (from my place in Edgewater). This was my first trip to el barrio since the last time I had just duty at 26th and Cal, about four years ago. By 11 a.m. or so I was hungry and ended up visiting El Tecolote. As soon as I walked in I realized I'd been there before, back in 2018 or 2019 when I was Uber-driving between jobs. That's so long ago that I don't have specific memories. I just remember that I liked El Tecolote a lot! Today I liked it a lot, too! I had juevos rancheros, which were wonderful. The dish consisted of sunny-side up eggs that were nice and runny, just the way I like them. In my experience, restaurants tend to overcook sunny-side up eggs these days. Is that due to people getting sick and filing lawsuits? I don't know, but I hate overcooked eggs, and I thank señora for nice and runny eggs! The red rancheros sauce was delicious and had lots of bell peppers. Also a side of rice and creamy refried beans, plus some excellent, hot corn tortillas. And some very tasty tortilla chips. More than anything else, this breakfast tasted like . . . Mexico. I went to Isla Mujeras four times in the 90s, and today's meal brought me back to those happy trips. Two TVs near the front door were tuned to the same news show, and later the same soap opera. Although I don't speak Spanish, I enjoyed checking out the news and could easily figure out the top story, of course. And I was able to see that Spanish-language soap operas have the same over-acting as their English counterparts! Muchos gracias!
