Don't fight it. Give in to the pull. It's small, it's basic and it's not going to win any glamous location awards but STUFF that, the food is UNBELIEVABLY GOOD. Where to even begin....just do what I did when I lived nearby, go every week until you've eaten everything on the menu, even the cow's feet (I aint kidding). Wash it all down with Guiness punch and then top it off with the only reasonable thing to have after a plate of glorious, flavourful, fresh Caribbean food.........a giant slab of homemade, hot, sweet sponge pudding smothered in an orgasm of thick creamy custard. The banter with the regulars can be hilarious too providing a free soap opera style enterainment. When I got the bill the first time around my mouth was wide open & the lady asked if it was too much! Her reply was gorgeous - "Dem locals wot cum in dis place don't like no 'spensive prices lady" and she gave me a big grin. I always leave a tip but noted the regulars don't lol! Today i had akee and saltfish and in the past i've had curried goat, mutton and naturally the wonderful rice and peas or dumplings - I also love fried plantains. There are always newspapers to read and lots of smiley faces, so with the great food to fill you up for next to nothing it's a great place to meet for lunch, especially when you are on a budget. The key is to keep an open mind, and say yes to the mutton curry, and if they ask if you want a side of Guinness Punch, say yes also. Ackee and Salt Fish with rice and peas is also a good option. A hearty meal for under a tenner, can't be half bad can it. If your appetite isn't satiated, then finish things off with either banana cake or the ginger cake. Go on give it a bash!

As is the case with most Caribbean places there's not much choice for vegetarians - though the macaroni cheese comes highly recommended, as does the calloloo if you want something a bit more authentic - but meat eaters will find plenty of tasty options, especially if they're feeling adventurous. There's a tempting selection of home-made desserts too, with the ginger cake a personal favourite, and the meal deals mean two of you can enjoy a meal each, some side dishes and a punch each for around a tenner - just let me know how the Guinness turns out.

The Caribbean Café may not look much from the outside, but much like many of the places in the market, the effort goes elsewhere, and I'm not arguing with what this guy has chosen to focus on: fresh-cooked food, conversation, and atmosphere (which, despite the rather modest premises, is far from lacking. You can feel the buzz as you walk into this place. The owner is chatting away to the people at the tables, keen to know about them, inform them, and just generally make them feel at home, so they can linger over their food. Nevertheless, he somehow manages to juggle this with quick service, and within minutes, I'm sitting with a perfectly presented plate of goat curry, my choice of salsa and salad, and my rice option (charmingly sand-castled into an upended cone!), while he freshly fries my side order of plantain (only 50p!), and serves a couple of people popping in for takeaway with other food I wish I had room for. At one point, I find myself alone, and rather than feeling awkward or imposed on, I enjoy chatting away to the owner about our jobs, backgrounds, upcoming events he'll be involved in, and of course the food (it's hard to say which of us loves it more)! He is happy to give me a free taster of his jerk chicken, and to recommend a place I can buy my own plantains. By the end of my meal, I don't want to leave. I want more. More of the tender meat and flavoursome (but not too spicy) sauce, more steaming hot plantains, and more friendly chatter. And the good news is, he caters for the reggae evenings at Outlaws Yacht Club, and he'll soon be doing breakfasts... so there is more to come, and as I leave, I find myself promising to be back with friends, because this is the kind of place and the kind of person that I would be proud to introduce my friends to!

Ordered jerk chicken (SEE IMAGE THAT I HAVE POSTED FOR REFERENCE OF THE STANDARD) for myself and my boyfriend and when it arrived we were extremely disappointed as it the meat was completely dry, no sauce and not fresh (clearly been cooked hours before if not days) and then been bunged in the microwave (I have one of those at home thanks...) They also managed to forget the steamed vegetables we ordered (hardly a complicated order, there was only 4 things on it.) It simply wasn't appealing, we didn't want to eat it as it was quite clearly sub-standard, so phoned the place straight away to inform them we weren't happy and to see what solutions they could come up with. When I rang I explained the problem and was told to ring another number. I also ordered fried chicken with rice and peas, a saltfish fritter, fried plantain, a fried dumpling, chips, callaloo, and sweet gravy -- I know, I'm a pig. Well, I'm not, actually; I just like to get a bit of everything to try. The total sum for all that was about £15 all told. And then I waited. A full hour after ordering I got a call from Island Grill's driver letting me know he'd be about 10 minutes. I appreciated the call since I was about to call myself, but there wasn't an explanation as to why it had taken so long. The delivery dude was nice, although he basically asked for a review straight away on Just Eat, and I'd not even tried the food and it was super late. Anyway, here's the lowdown: - The fried chicken was really nice, but would have benefitted from being much hotter -- I think if I'd had it on time it'd have been nicer. - The rice and peas was rice and kidney beans and I didn't much care for it. - The callaloo was hella salty, but I loved it, and it's really moreish. Plus, you don't feel so guilty that the rest of your plate is yellow-beige food with that on there. - The saltfish fritter was my favourite, but I couldn't taste much fish. It was like an awesome, salty, greasy pancake. - The plantain was nice, but not as tasty as I've had before. - The dumpling was ridiculously tasty, sweet, oily, and the perfect comfort food. - The sweet gravy was kind of like a sweet and sour sauce, but home made and went really well with the chicken and callaloo. Yum. And there it is! I think next time I need to try the curried goat or maybe a proper saltfish dish so I can get more of a feel for the cuisine! Our Young Man plays pool alternate Sundays so we had a little time in town first to look at alternatives. We couldn't find anything which looked more interesting and I always like going somewhere new so once we were all ready, off we went. Although it's on a busy road, there are parking places marked so we got a spot right outside. The restaurant itself isn't easy to spot, although it is signposted. The door is in a corner next to Pablo's Cafe and the restaurant it's self is right above Pablo's. We were the only customers so we had a choice of tables; perhaps if the weather had been warmer, we might have gone for a table on the terrace but as it was we headed for a table by the window. Despite being on a road better known for light industry than food, it is quite an attractive restaurant. I'm not talking about high fashion where the decor is more remarkable than the food (e.g. Bibi's) but we had real tablecloths, pretty lanterns, comfy chairs which were light enough to pull in and out easily and enough space between the tables to move if it had been crowded. Nice loos too. The staff were very friendly, pleasant and helpful. The only criticism I have is that the menu was recited rather than written, and with my memory. the poor guy had to go through the list three times, which he did very patiently. In the end I had grilled salmon with mediterranean vegetables, mashed potatoes (real mash made from genuine potatoes) and a range of salads. My beloved had grilled pork, mediterranean vegetables, macaroni cheese, Boerewors sausages, a piece of pizza, chips and salad. Our Young Man had beefburgers rather than pork and sausage but otherwise copied his dad. We followed this with apple tart andicecrean for OYM and pineapple upsidedown cake with cream for MB and I.
