Don't fight it. Give in to the pull. It's small, it's basic and it's not going to win any glamous location awards but STUFF that, the food is UNBELIEVABLY GOOD. Where to even begin....just do what I did when I lived nearby, go every week until you've eaten everything on the menu, even the cow's feet (I aint kidding). Wash it all down with Guiness punch and then top it off with the only reasonable thing to have after a plate of glorious, flavourful, fresh Caribbean food.........a giant slab of homemade, hot, sweet sponge pudding smothered in an orgasm of thick creamy custard. I am physically salivating at the thought........I have to go. TAXI!!!!!!!!!!!!!! p.s if you are lucky you'll go when Maureen is singing her hymns at the top of her rich, warm voice........I wonder if she realises she's already in heaven? Spicy, filling, creamy, delicious heaven.

It's an informal, casual style cafe with a buzzing atmosphere and the staff have that warmth that makes you feel welcome everytime. The banter with the regulars can be hilarious too providing a free soap opera style enterainment. When I got the bill the first time around my mouth was wide open & the lady asked if it was too much! Her reply was gorgeous - "Dem locals wot cum in dis place don't like no 'spensive prices lady" and she gave me a big grin. I always leave a tip but noted the regulars don't lol! Today i had akee and saltfish and in the past i've had curried goat, mutton and naturally the wonderful rice and peas or dumplings - I also love fried plantains. There are always newspapers to read and lots of smiley faces, so with the great food to fill you up for next to nothing it's a great place to meet for lunch, especially when you are on a budget. Given that we just quickly ordered a couple of drinks at the bar it's hard to be sure how much this affects the service but, once we'd found a table, we didn't have any trouble. We ordered a couple of from the big, sqaure central bar. You can add a slug of Appleton's rum to these which I deicded to go for. To me, they were delicious. Unfortunately, my partner was less of a fan but that's more because ginger beer isn't really his thing than because there was anything wrong with the drinks themselves. That said, £6 for Red stripe, ginger beer and Appletons is a bit steep, even if it is served in a cool swing cap bottle - it doesn't quite count as a cocktail. I was wanred that they weren't on two-for-one, though, so presumably this bar does happy hour offers on some drinks, some times. That'll be one to watch out for in future.

The staff were very welcoming and friendly and happy to explain about the concept of the restaurant. We were only after drinks so we sat in the cafe area. The choice of coffees is a little overwhelming and may need explanation. We opted for hot chocolate, my daughter had mint and banana and i had double praline. Totally divine! A little expensive perhaps at £4.00 each but i would happily pay this. I have given 3 stars because i have yet to try the restaurant.

This may seem odd, coming from someone who's not overtly interested in chocolate, but the idea of chocolate themed food is certainly intriguing. Although, the reality was different to what I'd expected. We started out in the café/bar, since one can't come to a Hotel Chocolat café and not indulge in hot chocolate. There doesn't appear to be table service, so I ordered at the bar, and despite several staff members it was a little tricky catching one to order, and then a small wait to receive the drink. Even so, I have to declare, it's worth it. Once the ceramic cup of warmth arrived -- the perfect antidote to this grey and miserable weather -- I knew I was going to be delighted. The salted caramel was the variety I chose, and I believe it's mostly made of melted chocolate. Imagine a thick, silky, creamy sensation. The salted part wasn't as obvious as I'd hoped, but the caramel and chocolate part made up for that in spades. It was almost perfect. Once the restaurant opened at 6pm (Sunday) we ascended through the shop on the middle floor, and up to the restaurant. It's really beautifully decked out and neither too intimate nor too spacious. I'm a fan of the window booths and the wooden panelling; it's very rustic and the open kitchen adds to the ambience. The menu itself revealed more tempting starters than mains, in my opinion but, given the price and my appetite, I stuck with just a main. Starters are all around the six quid mark, and mains from around £15 up to £30, roughly. They have a bit of a West Indian vibe to the dishes, or at least, that was the first impression. Being the burger fiend that I am, this is what I chose. The table has little nibs for you to open and try, which are very bitter, but offer a snippet of what to expect. We were surprised with an amuse bouche, which I always love. This one was a walnut, carrot, and nibs soup of sorts, and whilst the flavour was delicious, it was hotter than the sun and denied the laws of physics -- I simply couldn't get it to cool, so burned my tongue a tiny bit! When my burger arrived, I have to say, I was a touch disappointed. Whilst the arrangement on the plate was rather attractive, the size of the thing was a little unforgivable, given it came in at £15. (The most expensive burger I've had in Leeds so far.) The sweet potato crisps were delicious, though, and perfectly cooked. The onion rings were a true let down, since the batter didn't have a single bit of crispness to it. The burger itself came in a bun, shaped like a cocoa bean, which was a nice touch but, for my tastes, was far too thick and doughy. There was no way of squishing it down for a double-handed bite, nor the means to cut it with a knife and fork. The burger, whilst cooked medium rare, lacked in the juiciness and flavour I've come to hope for. It was well made, certainly, but small and not as tasty as I'd hoped. The chutney was perhaps overpowering? I'm not sure, it just didn't do it for me. The service, however, was fantastic. My companion has a specific food allergy, and they were really, very, accommodating. Everything was explained nicely, and they were attentive without becoming cloying. The staff -- for the restaurant, at least -- are fantastic. They also allowed us to sit in and chat for about 20 minutes after finishing and paying the bill, to finish our water, which was lovely. Overall, I'd say absolutely get in for a hot chocolate. As for the restaurant, I'm not sure it's really for me.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, let me tell you about Island Grill. I've tried Caribbean food once before, from Dutch Pot, and wanted to give it another try somewhere new. I love jerk chicken (there's an amazing street food guy that had a stand at Belgrave once) and so I decided to dive in on Just Eat and grab a selection of bits. It's impressive that they've got a cool range of drinks -- that always endears me to a place if they serve more trad/interesting options beyond cola and the like. I ordered a regular aloe juice, because it's exciting and has aloe pieces in! (Very hydrating or what ever.) I also ordered fried chicken with rice and peas, a saltfish fritter, fried plantain, a fried dumpling, chips, callaloo, and sweet gravy -- I know, I'm a pig. Well, I'm not, actually; I just like to get a bit of everything to try. The total sum for all that was about £15 all told. And then I waited. A full hour after ordering I got a call from Island Grill's driver letting me know he'd be about 10 minutes. I appreciated the call since I was about to call myself, but there wasn't an explanation as to why it had taken so long. The delivery dude was nice, although he basically asked for a review straight away on Just Eat, and I'd not even tried the food and it was super late. Anyway, here's the lowdown: - The fried chicken was really nice, but would have benefitted from being much hotter -- I think if I'd had it on time it'd have been nicer. - The rice and peas was rice and kidney beans and I didn't much care for it. - The callaloo was hella salty, but I loved it, and it's really moreish. Plus, you don't feel so guilty that the rest of your plate is yellow-beige food with that on there. - The saltfish fritter was my favourite, but I couldn't taste much fish. It was like an awesome, salty, greasy pancake. - The plantain was nice, but not as tasty as I've had before. - The dumpling was ridiculously tasty, sweet, oily, and the perfect comfort food. - The sweet gravy was kind of like a sweet and sour sauce, but home made and went really well with the chicken and callaloo. Yum. And there it is! I think next time I need to try the curried goat or maybe a proper saltfish dish so I can get more of a feel for the cuisine! All of the above was really good but a little bit oily for my tastes. (Although I am a sucker for fried chicken.) Absolutely bulk up any order with a fritter though, as they're awesome. Update when I next try them!

The key is to keep an open mind, and say yes to the mutton curry, and if they ask if you want a side of Guinness Punch, say yes also. Ackee and Salt Fish with rice and peas is also a good option. A hearty meal for under a tenner, can't be half bad can it. If your appetite isn't satiated, then finish things off with either banana cake or the ginger cake. Go on give it a bash!

That, and the menu makes for entertaining reading after a couple of beers. Featuring such delights as Guinness punch and the minimally named 'festival' option - 60p a pop, whatever it is - choosing food from here is a whole lot more fun than picking which curry you want from a menu you've seen a dozen times. As is the case with most Caribbean places there's not much choice for vegetarians - though the macaroni cheese comes highly recommended, as does the calloloo if you want something a bit more authentic - but meat eaters will find plenty of tasty options, especially if they're feeling adventurous. There's a tempting selection of home-made desserts too, with the ginger cake a personal favourite, and the meal deals mean two of you can enjoy a meal each, some side dishes and a punch each for around a tenner - just let me know how the Guinness turns out.

Instead, at The Dutch Pot, you can find quality West Indian food - curry goat, rice and peas, ginger beer, dumplings - probably because there is a large West Indian/Afro Caribbean community in Chapel Town. Especially since there's so much good press here for them. In typical me style, I ordered a bit of everything from the menu... Let's be clear here: there were three of us, so it wasn't just me going crazy. The things I liked included: The festivals (breaded, fried, sweet dumpling type things), the jerk chicken (a large tub of marinated, fall-off-the-bone spicy chicken), and the taster of goat curry I had was delish. The mac and cheese was decent, but definitely not excellent, and the potato fritters were not my favourite. I did enjoy the plantains and dumplings, but I was expecting a pot of gravy to come with my meal (I specifically ordered jerk with gravy as I'm not a fan of dry food) and there was no such extra pot so I couldn't really eat much of those. I was also confused as I'd ordered extra dumplings on the side, and two of our meals were meant to come with them anyway, but we only had two in total... Not so great. I don't know if it's a case of the good press raising my expectations, or the fact we ordered so much we ended up with a muddled delivery, but I wasn't bowled over by these guys. I wasn't disappointed either, so it's a straight up a-ok from me. Would order again when the fancy takes me.
