We seem to have a habit of discovering true local gems!…read more Red Marrakech is one of those. You probably wouldn't normally look twice at the row of shops opposite Bottle Tops on Ayres Road, most of them are in need of a little spruicing up and TLC, but a few months ago, Red Marrakech sprang up, with its bright and colourful sign and raised the bar on more than one level. Traditional home-cooked Moroccan food to order. Something you can't get that often, something we now can't get enough of! It's an exercise in exploring Moroccan cuisine, with a menu stuffed to bursting. Tajines and couscous take centre stage with meat brochettes and fresh fish dishes playing spectacular supporting roles. There are also some less Moroccan offerings for the less adventurous (burgers, pasta, pizza) but if you're into food, you'll look straight past them at the main attractions. The made-in-front-of-your-eyes flat-bread is incredible, crispy and fresh, light and delicious and complements the other meals just so well. First up, Lamb Tajine. Succulent and tender, falling off the bone, richly flavoured with some apricot and prune to complement the saffron and turmeric and lightly spiced to perfection. Roasted almonds sit in the sauce, adding a crunch. Then the Chicken Tajine. Juicy and sweet, large chicken leg & thigh, coming away so easily from the bones, complemented by being cooked with green olives & lemon rind. Truly an epic dish, perfect to share and a generous portion. The Chicken Brochetes (grilled chicken skewers) were also brilliant, spicy but not too hot, rounded and exciting to the palate with some kind of spiced mayonnaise or yoghurt on the side. Next up, we shared a Tajine Kofta De Lahm which was home-made meatballs in a tomato and herb sauce. Again the spice touch on this dish was done with finesse and the flavours balanced really well. Finally, a side-order of sautéed mushrooms in garlic & parsley was exactly what it claimed to be and tasted wonderful. Meal for 4 adults and 2 kids stuffed to bursting: £32 which to my mind is awesome value. Suffice to say: you won't regret coming here, the meals are gorgeous, the owners friendly and welcoming, it's almost as if they have asked you for dinner at their house and it won't bankrupt you either. We keep going back, torn between here and Tibetan Kitchen!

A hidden gem. Not only was the food incredible, but the owners were amazing and kind. It is a very…read moresmall dining space so be prepared to wait.

The decor was lovely, a really nice homely feel whilst still being cool. The service let us down enormously though. We waited 30mins for our order to be taken then a further 30 mins for our starter and even our drinks to arrive. It was a busy night, maybe that was it, or maybe it was the fact that 2 of the staff sat down tucking into their dinner rather than serving the heaving dining room of guests. The food was very good, we opted for a mezze to start. Then a mixed grill and a lamb and goats cheese bouvlak. The bouvlak was lovely, the mixed grill was ok too, even if we did see the 2 dining staff putting 2 of their leftover sausages back on the grill. It's cheap, a nice atmosphere and the foods ok, but we won't be going back. It was a huge disappointment.

Try the lamb and goats' cheese bourek; just avoid the vegetable version as it tastes like flavourless mash. Everything is prepared in the small kitchen by undoubtedly loving hands, as it really is more-ish! (sorry.) The prices are pretty good, the bourek (a kind of filo pastry filled with meat and cheese) which is very filling will set you back around £5.50, just remember to get your desert, baklava from Maumoniats International Supermarket, down the road. I made my housemate try these delicious middle-eastern sweets and now she's hooked!

However, a couple of things let this, undoubtably good value Full English down. The first gripe was using cheap sausages. Now, I know you can't actually buy decent sausages for not much money, but I'd at least prefer the option to have non-processed ones. But then, by giving that option, you'd infer that your normal sausages were crap. So, catch-22 really. (Well I think it is, I never could finish the book) Anyway, they had a real problem with mugs too - but, fair enough, we were about 15 hungry hungover layabouts. The rest of the breakfast was excellent, really nice black pudding and what have you. And only GBP 4.99 for a load of stuff. Apparently this place is actually a Moroccan restaurant at night! We proceeded to try different things from the menu to share between us, the food was delicious and the portions generous and everyone commented on the exquisite taste of some of the ingredients that were obviously produced on the premises, the hummus was the best ever. It is fortunate the supermarket is so near, when we ran out of wine, one of us ran round and bought some more, certainly quicker service than some of the bars in chapel A.

I ordered a birthday meal at 17:36 via Uber Eats, it arrived at 18:17 STONE COLD and with some items undercooked. I initially complained to Uber Eats who blamed the restaurant. I called and spoke to the manager, Charlie, today who pushed back the complaint to Uber Eats. He didn't offer any form of compensation for 2 cold inedible mains and for the undercooked side I would have to come into o the restaurant and spend more money. Nor a sincere apology for a ruined birthday meal. We spent £46 on a cold inedible/unenjoyable meal. I have also had to spend several hours being pushed from pillar to post as no one takes responsibility for fixing the issues. Customer service is non existent. Working as an Event Manager and having been recently venue based in Carnaby Street I can absolutely say I would NEVER leave a repeat customer so unhappy. Word of mouth from unhappy customers is extremely damaging. Previously I would have been happy to recommend this venue but due now primarily to the managers handling of my complaint this will now not be the case. A customer with a ruined birthday is not going to forget quickly. In a cost of living crisis, a customer willing to spend with you should be appreciated.

Take Away Chicken…read moreTagine with more rice than any three humans could eat in one sitting for a fiver? You'd be forgiven for thinking it'd be the single worst meal you'd ever have eaten in your life. There though you'd be wrong. Each order of this wonderful stuff comes with about a third of a large chicken that tastes as though it'd been cooked in a real tagine and a box...yes a box of cardamom infused rice. Not the single greatest take-away I've ever had, but they manage to provide really tasty food quickly and at a great price.

If, like me, you tend to order food rather a lot (no comments on my cooking habits, now) then…read moreyou'll know that Leeds has lots of places to choose for Indian, Chinese, kebabs and such like. When it comes to such cuisines as Lebanese we have much less option, so having spotted Arabian House on Yelp I was keen to give them a go. Since Hungry House had decided to gift me 20% discount again, I was all over it. Not least because it had gotten past 8pm, I'd nothing to cook, and I was starving! The menu offers a number of interesting and authentic dishes and because I'm indeciseive I opted for the mixed grill. To accompany this I chose some tzatziki, hummous, and a naan. The chap had a mosaghat batinjan (various spiced veggies with rice) and with all of the items a veritable feast arrived. Given the discount, the total order came to about £15 so it's incredibly reasonable, and they certainly don't scrimp on the portions. The hummous and tzatziki came in huge foil dishes, so there was plentiful dipping option, the naan was gargantuan, the mixed grill had tons of pieces of chicken, a huge wing, and a large lamb kebab sausage. The veggie dish was a large vat of goodness in itself, and came with a huge portion of beautifully scented rice. It really was the best rice I've had from a take away - long grained, infused with real cinnamon sticks, and other stuff. The chips I ordered as a side with the mixed grill came, also, in a huge box. We were not short on carbs. It took a little while to come, being about 10-15 minutes later than the latest possible time, so order early. As for the taste, I wasn't too impressed with the hummous, as it seemed a little bland. The garlic dip, on the contrary, was so garlicky it almost tasted spicy. The chips, being thin fries, had gotten a touch soggy from the condensation in the packet, but the mixed grill was great. I preferred the chicken to the lamb, as I've had better, but the chicken was cooked beautifully and went extremely well with the tzatziki. The rice was exquisite, and I'd certainly recommend you order it to accompany anything from here. (Except maybe the desserts.) All in all, it's certainly worth trying something from the varied menu. Russell C wasn't kidding on the portion sizes, so you can double up, save even more cash, and still enjoy a relatively healthy meal considering you're ordering take away. I'll likely try them again, but hope next time that the hummous is a little more flavoursome, and the wait not so long for arrival! In any case, it's definitely recommended.

It's fine though, as we arrived in good time to grab a late night bite and a shisha. We grabbed an apple juice from the fridge, ordered chicken, houmous, mushroom and cheese sandwiches, and sat in the outdoor area to await the food and the shisha. I can't recall which flavour I chose, but have to say, it was delightful -fruity, sweet and lovely! (Of course, that's if you're a fan of shisha.) The sandwiches came promptly, and were simply delicious. The chicken was cooked beautifully, the toasted bread was stuffed to the brim with fresh houmous, mushrooms and melted cheese and the plate came with a helping of salad to eat alongside the sarnie. Incredible! The space is fabulous too; when you enter, it feels like you've gained access to a secret club, where only a select savvy few know it exists. Despite the main shop being empty, we walked in to find a lively hub of folk, all with the same great idea to side-step the noise of Leeds City Centre. The staff are really accommodating, regardless if you're a little wobbly, and it makes for an excellent little hide away from the busy late night streets of Leeds. Given that it's two minutes away from most of the bars along Call Lane, it's the perfect spot to soak up some booze with their varied edibles, relax with friends and escape the rowdiness of town. The best bit? The food is practically take away prices, with none of the awful grease -now that's worth knowing. Yes, sometimes, all you want is an awful kebab, but for those who don't have such a calling come 1am, there's Kadas. Hidden, tasty, friendly and just really flippin' cool. Get involved.

Whilst…read moreit isn't fine dining in the strictest of senses, compared to say, Kendell's Bistro or Brasserie Forty 4, it is a fantastic place to eat. There's a few reasons, which I'll go into, but let me explain -the five star rating spans the whole experience. So, the staff. Every time I've visited this delightful restaurant the greeting has been most warm and the staff have been attentive. If there's something not on the menu at that time they've suggested alternatives and you're always greeted with a smile. The décor and ambience is lovely; it's spacious and classy without making one feel as though you've to be overly dressed up. Then there comes the food. Everything I've eaten here has been delicious. Their grilled houmous is some of the best I've tasted and the boreks are to die for. The lamb dishes are delicious and they make a mean moussaka, if that floats your boat. Basically, it's all fresh, mouth watering cuisine, cooked beautifully and above all they feed you like a king. On top of that the food seems to be really healthy, so you can eat until you burst on their fantastic lunch time deal, without feeling as though you've a small loan to take out. You can eat on a budget without having to accept sub-standard food, which feels like a rarity these days. Add to that the home made desserts, which are fabulous, and you're on to a great meal out right there. As for drinks, you can always partake of some of the usual wines and beers, but my choice has to be that home made lemonade. Simply delicious and I'll be sending spies for the recipe.

The owners are really friendly, and it is cosy, but despite that, dinner was a disappointing experience. We decided to take advantage of their 3 courses for £14.95 offer, and - credit to the owner lady for her honesty - she dissuaded us from ordering extra houmous, saying we wouldn't need it. She was right - the portions are extremely generous! We started with halloumi which was really really good. Then we had platters for our mains (£3 extra on the deal, they told us upfront, and it's fair because they are HUGE). Boyfriend's meat platter was apparently quite tasty. My veggie platter had some nice moussaka and rice on it, but everything else wasn't so good sadly. The keftedes and falafel had been deep-fried for so long that they were really crunchy and just tasted of salty fried-ness rather than what was inside. The feta roll was also so oily I couldn't eat it. The briam was quite nice but nothing special honestly. We were feeling really full by this point so we got the bill rather than having dessert. Unfortunately because we hadn't had three courses we were charged full price for the dishes, and they are quite pricey! There was a sign on the wall saying two courses are £12.95, but this didn't seem to apply. To be fair, perhaps we should have enquired about this, but we'd already made a fuss over getting our drinks, so we wussed out. Service was quite slow, and we had to ask twice before our drinks came out - well after the starter had been served. Rowena's right though, the home-made lemonade is really gooooooood. Unfortunately we both felt pretty ill that night - not in a food poisoning way, but I think just massive indigestion from greasy food. I didn't finish my veggie platter, but I found myself wishing I'd skipped the keftedes and falafel entirely. Gah, I feel horrible giving just two stars, because they are really friendly. However I have to be honest and say I don't really want to eat there again - especially given all the other great places there are to choose from in Headingley. I've heard the desserts are amazing, so perhaps one quiet lunchtime I should pop in for some cake and a lovely lemonade and give these guys another chance.
