I must confess that Turkish / Greek food isn't my favourite type, but I do like it for a change now and again. Once you are seated at Antalya and your drinks order has been taken, warm strips of a flat bread will be brought to your table, alone with dishes of olives and pickled peppers (the ones that look like large chillies, but are not spicy as such). These are free, and you can nibble on them as you decide on your order. There are a wide range of hot and cold starters, with my favourite being a 'mezze' selection...a small plate with around 8 or 10 items on it, e.g. hummous, taramasalata, some kind of bean salad, a meatball, stuffed vine leaf, a 'burek' (sort of a cheese samosa) and some other bits. Want some more free bread to mop things up with? Just ask. Main courses consist of a lot of lamb and chicken dishes, with some fish and vegetarian options too. My recommendation is the Iskendar kebab, a dish containing a mixture of meats in a tomatoey sauce, served over pitta bread. If you have room for dessert, the trolley appears to be well stocked with cakes and traditional Turkish baklava...very sweet pastry affairs, sometimes nutty, and dripping with syrup or honey. Too sweet for my tooth, but each to their own. If you decide not to have a dessert, your meal will still be rounded off by a free shot of a fruit liqueur, usually on offer is banana, cherry, strawberry, and possibly one other. Also, a plate of free fruit is served which is great to cleanse the palate, but also great as a free alternative to dessert, if you didn't fancy one of the heavy offerings from the trolley. The staff are attentive without being overbearing, and they are very friendly. One waiter overheard my brother saying how much he liked the apple tea they served there, and he went into the kitchen and came out with a pack of the stuff for him to take home. I don't know if this is a family run restaurant, but it certainly has that feel. When the bill comes, if you've had a couple of drinks then don't expect any change from a 20 if you had a starter and a main course. I never feel cheated when paying the bill here, as I do feel that the little 'extras' add a lot of value to the dining experience. The ambience is relaxed and friendly, great for couples, families or group bookings...a good all-rounder in this respect.

You probably wouldn't normally look twice at the row of shops opposite Bottle Tops on Ayres Road, most of them are in need of a little spruicing up and TLC, but a few months ago, Red Marrakech sprang up, with its bright and colourful sign and raised the bar on more than one level. Traditional home-cooked Moroccan food to order. Something you can't get that often, something we now can't get enough of! It's an exercise in exploring Moroccan cuisine, with a menu stuffed to bursting. Tajines and couscous take centre stage with meat brochettes and fresh fish dishes playing spectacular supporting roles. There are also some less Moroccan offerings for the less adventurous (burgers, pasta, pizza) but if you're into food, you'll look straight past them at the main attractions. The made-in-front-of-your-eyes flat-bread is incredible, crispy and fresh, light and delicious and complements the other meals just so well. First up, Lamb Tajine. Succulent and tender, falling off the bone, richly flavoured with some apricot and prune to complement the saffron and turmeric and lightly spiced to perfection. Roasted almonds sit in the sauce, adding a crunch. Then the Chicken Tajine. Juicy and sweet, large chicken leg & thigh, coming away so easily from the bones, complemented by being cooked with green olives & lemon rind. Truly an epic dish, perfect to share and a generous portion. The Chicken Brochetes (grilled chicken skewers) were also brilliant, spicy but not too hot, rounded and exciting to the palate with some kind of spiced mayonnaise or yoghurt on the side. Next up, we shared a Tajine Kofta De Lahm which was home-made meatballs in a tomato and herb sauce. Again the spice touch on this dish was done with finesse and the flavours balanced really well. Finally, a side-order of sautéed mushrooms in garlic & parsley was exactly what it claimed to be and tasted wonderful. Meal for 4 adults and 2 kids stuffed to bursting: £32 which to my mind is awesome value. Suffice to say: you won't regret coming here, the meals are gorgeous, the owners friendly and welcoming, it's almost as if they have asked you for dinner at their house and it won't bankrupt you either. I asked for my steak to be cooked medium rare, and being very particular about my steak, I was quite disappointed when it came out medium to well done. However it was still quite delicious, and the pepper sauce was definitely the highlight. Be prepared to pay for drinks in Toros, as they charge for water as well as the quite steep menu prices. My friend used to live in Fallowfield and being a typical single male student, ate at takeaways…read morepretty often. Just as me and my other Whitworth-Park dwelling friends would stop off at Adbuls or Gemini after a night out, he would never fail to stop at Saajan. Fast-forward 5 years. Single male student is still a student, but now, like many mature students has emigrated south to Didsbury. He still has a penchant for fast food, but not many residents of Didsbury share his fondness, therefore he was most upset when he found out that there are no late night kebab houses in Didsbury. So the resolution to this problem is that after a night out in town, he simply gets off the bus in Fallowfield, purchases his Saajan kebab and gets back onto the bus to Didsbury feeling content. It's very rare for such an establishment to survive for so long without even the slightest hint of a rumour about cockroaches, rats or gross staff (a la Abduls and Gemini) to tarnish its reputation, so Saajan must be good. I went for lamb. Problem is, and I knew this before, a kebab doesn't travel too well. Before I was only living 5 minutes away but now it had to cope with a 20 mins drive so the bread was saggy and the meat a bit cold. Nothing to do with the Sajaan guys however. My main criticism would be about the quality of the meat. I think it went downhill as my lamb was chewy and full of nerves. I still like the flavours but despite the fact the price has gone up (£3.80 now which is not that exorbitant for a full meal) the meat is not as good as it used to be. Would happily go back for the chicken or shish, hopefully in the near future though.
